the second time this week. we're at west springfield high school right now where a campaign rally just ended. julie? >> reporter: that's right. folks head to the parking lot right now. it was seven days ago paul ryan was picked as mitt romney's runs mate. three of those days he has been in virginia, another clear sign of the importance of the commonwealth in this presidential contest. with mitt romney taking a da away from rallies, his running mate wisconsin congressman paul ryan was in the campaign spotlight working for votes in all important virginia, vote rich fairfax county and suburban richmond. >> this is a state that has it all and this is a state that will determine it all. >> reporter: to make sure supporters are convinced of his connection to the commonwealth, ryan boasted to the richmond area crowd he'd caught some big bass in virginia waters. he fished for votes there by slamming president obama, blaming him for the gridlock in washington. >> i tell you, i've served with three presidents since i've been

in congress. this is the most partisan atmosphere i have ever seen. this is not uniting. this is dividing. >> reporter: ryan stuck to broad themes and did not mention medicare or romney's tax returns. issues that have dominated the campaign in recent days. instead, ryan turned the focus back on the economy. promising to cut taxes to create jobs. >> when we tax our job creators and our businesses at much higher tax rates than our foreign competitors tax theirs, they win, we lose. that's what obama-nomics is. we're going to reject oba obama-nomics, and help small businesses grow and create jobs. >> reporter: northern virginia democrats say a romney/ryan administration's tax policy would favor millionaire businessowners over the middle class. >> providing tax breaks to the billionaires. what about the middle class folks? that's what i hear about when i knock on doors. what about us? that's a real, real life concern that i hear day in and day out.

>> reporter: romney supporters say their evnthusiasm has grown with the addition of paul ryan. >> i'm really excited about this selection of paul ryan for the vp slot and i think he presents a lot of good ideas for us and we need to get this country back on track. >> reporter: now, paul ryan retooled his speech somewhat for the northern virginia crowd. coming up at 6:00 i'll tell you what he had to say about the enormous cuts looming in the defense industry. reporting live from springfield, news 4. >> julie has a one-on-one interview with paul ryan, that story tomorrow night on "news 4 at 11" after the redskins/bears game. northern virginia may be a battleground region in the ex-streamly tight race for u.s. senate. former governor tim kaine is the democrat running to represent the commonwealth. today he spoke on wamu's show. noting that northern virginia voters account for 1/3 of the electorate. >> so that means as a candidate

you spend about a third of your time here. and northern virginia is a place where there's a lot of innovation going on that is driving not just northern virginia economy but driving, you know, new ideas that can help the american economies. >> kaine's republican opponent george allen is also doing a lot of campaigning in northern virginia. the most recent polls show both former governors in a dead heat. a movie theater chain is on alert tonight after receiving a bomb threat. all of carmyke cinemas, 236 theaters, closed ace poli ed as search for explosives. a man left phone messages claiming bombs had been placed at several theaters. so far no explosives have been found. police have not mentioned any connection between the threat and the arrest of a 23-year-old who tried to carry a loaded pistol into a carmike cinema last night in columbus, georgia. police are taking extra precautions now in light of the deadly shooting rampage in

aurora, colorado. a fugitive wanted for sex crimes against girls is back in fairfax county tonight after more than a dozen years on the run. u.s. marshals helped track down wesley thomasson near a lake in central mexico. he had been living for years in an expatriate community according to the "washington post." fairfax county police arrested him in 2000. he gave drugs to underage girls and made videos of himself having sex with them. he took off before the case could go to court. he faces 40 years in prison if he's convicted. a disturbing case in spottsylvania, virginia. police arrested jimmy rogers yesterday, they say he was taken into custody shortly after the victim's father found explicit pictures of his daughter in roger's bedroom. they believe he had been committing the assaults in his home since april. he's been held without bond. conservative groups in our area are doubling up on their

security tonight after that shooting at the family resource council two days ago. meanwhile, the guard wounded in that case had a high-profile visitor at the hospital today. jackie bensen is outside the council headquarters on "g" street northwest and new information about the man charged with the crime. >> reporter: jim, first very good news in a statement released a short time ago by the family research council. they expect security officer leo johnson to slowly but eventually make a full recovery and return to work. meanwhile, the gunman's motives remain a mystery. this is a screen grab of floyd lee corkins' facebook page displaying one friend. it was taken down shortly after he was identified as the man arrested for walking into the family research center on "g" street northwest wednesday and shooting security officer leo johnson, stating, quote, i don't like your politics. a handwritten sign at his

family's home in herndon reads, no trespassing. the center, a gay community organization on "u" street northwest where corkins volunteered has been besieged by reporters. a new handwritten sign there reads, closed thursday and friday. even basic information about corkins is murky. officials confirmed he attended george mason university two years but did not obtain a master's degree as has been reported. meanwhile, the odd discovery of 15 chick-fil-a sandwiches in corkins' backpack prompted wider concerns. organizations who weighed in on the same-sex marriage controversy sparked by the fast food chain's owner say they have beefed up security. among them the d.c.-based national organization for marriage. >> obviously we don't want to reveal those but we've had to beef up security. this is not the first time we've had threats like this. i think there's some ownership you have to take for when you don't give your opponents the benefit of the doubt. >> reporter: now, we learned

that d.c. mayor vincent gray visited security officer leo johnson in his hospital room today and thanked him for his sacrifice. reporting live in northwest washington, jackie bensen, news 4. it's been a very warm friday afternoon. question is, what's in store for tonight? and the weekend? meteorologist chuck bell has the answers. he's in the storm center. hey, chuck. >> hey there, pat, and jim, good afternoon. good afternoon, everybody. your friday is officially here. it's after 5:00 on your friday afternoon. it's still toasty warm here in washington, itself. we were at 93 last hour. we're back down to 91 now. still a very strong wind out of the southwest, averaging 18, gusting to 28 miles per hour. so a nice breeze to get things stirred up there. there are rain showers to be found as well. these are your current dew points across the area. notice the numbers are getting bigger as you go out to the west, that's where the more moisture laden air is. it's 70, the current dew point in winchester, virginia, whereas right here in town our dew point is 57. there are raindrops to be seen on storm 4 radar.

summer camp is a great getaway for kids even those fighting cancer. >> yeah, camp fantastic is celebrating its 30th anniversary in front royal. news 4's keith russell has the story. >> reporter: a chance to celebrate winning a game of cards. embracing their colorful imagination is something these kids do not take for granted. >> just to know, like, what could happen to you, it's definitely -- it's shocking and then you just kind of, you think, oh my gosh, i have to grow end aup and can't be a kid can't do the fun things like i used to. coming here, it's changed everything. >> reporter: celebrating its 30th anniversary, camp fantastic in front royal gives children ages 7 through 17 fighting cancer a week to be something they haven't always been able to be. themselves. >> special love. the sponsor of camp fantastic knew what they were doing when they named themselves. love is the only way to describe

it. >> reporter: how special is it to some of the counselors have traveled the same path as the campers? take danielle, for instance, she attended the same camp ten years ago as a native of rockville when she had leukemia. now a therapist at a children's hospital in chicago, age 22, cancer free, she travels back each summer as an example that anything is possible. >> gives you a, you know, a hope so it's kind of cool to come back and provide that same sort of hope. >> reporter: a hope that activities like swimming, canoeing, and horseback riding don't have to be fleeting moments of happiness. >> what this camp means to me, is like a place in your heart that you love the most. >> reporter: gearing up for the talent show as one of the camp's final events, the tunes were different. the messages clearly the same. ♪ we all need somebody to lean on ♪ >> yes, we all do. a story that makes you appreciate life. these kids live it to the fullest every day. despite some very tough

hour. there is a nice southwesterly breeze out ahead of the cold front which promises noticeably cooler weather as we get into and through your weekend. current temperatures, 90s in town and to the south. 80s just out to our west. 70s now through the shenandoah valley and blue ridge and just barely above the 60s now in hagerstown where they've actually seen quite a bit in the way of rainfall. more than a quarter inch of rain already down in hagerstown. that southwesterly breeze. current wind gusts 18 to 28, 22, 20 miles per hour common across the area. the winds are out ahead of a cold front which will bring rain chances in for this evening. the mets and nationals, first pitch at 7:05 this evening. clouds returning. i can't rule out showers after the fifth, sixth, seventh inning. if the game were to go 13 or 14 innings, it would be wetter by the time we got to the end of it. radar, not much around town. look out to our west, western half of lowden county, virginia, northern parts of virginia, out

here in the panhandle of west virginia. rain showers. one or two rumbles of thunder can not be completely ruled out. not looking for a lot in the way of severe weather. front royal, marshall, warrington, rappahanna county, route 66. be on the lookout for the raindrops inbound for your friday evening. if you have outdoor barbecue and picnic plans, keep a weather eye to the sky. further west you live, the earlier you're going to get the raindrops for sure. the pattern is going to be repeated here. evening showers and thunderstorms through. as the weather front gets closer to the coastline, i think it's going to start to slow down. by late this evening, most of the rain will be just to our east, but as it gets slower and slower to the coastline, a little wave of low pressure develops along it and that means limited sunshine around here for tomorrow, especially east of i-95. if you're making the drive out to the beaches this weekend, tomorrow may not be a very good day for sitting on the sand. might be more of an indoor volleyball kind of a day. showers and thunderstorms around for this evening. again, no big severe weather,

lou joins us. tomorrow preseason number two. they're in chicago already. >> it's a numbers game. this preseason is a number game. start off with 90, you have to get down to 53. that's like 37 people that are going to get that pink slip. so it's all starting now. a lot of people always ask people in the sports department what is this four-game nfl preseason actually mean? well, for the players the first game basically is impressing that recruiters at a job fair, enough to get a visit to the work site. the second game in essence is meeting with that potential supervisor. if you don't impress on that stage, you can forget getting that offer letter. tomorrow in chicago, a lot of impressing needs to take place

as rosters start to get pared down. this guy already has his offer letter then some. robert griffin iii looking to build on a strong performance in his first preseason game. here's a guy to watch on saturday. rookie running back alford morris. he'll get major run with tim hightower out nursing injuries. with the infusion of young guys on the roster the veterans feel it adds to the competition and chemistry of the team. >> we have a lot more competition here. you know, i mean, we have a lot of younger guys here, so we have those kind of guys coming in from college, those young guys coming in from being only one or two years then you have a couple of vets, you know, vets want to make sure those young guys know, hey, man, you got to go out here and prove yourself. >> i think we've been just missing a couple pieces in years, you know, back in the last couple of years. i think feel like now i think we're more as a team. as far as comrade goes, we've always had the team chemistry where we want to hang out with each other, we genuinely like

our top story tonight, republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan has just wrapped up a campaign rally at west springfield high school in springfield, virginia. and as you an see, there was an overflow crowd. now let's get a quick check of the weather. chuck? >> hey, pat. good afternoon once again. cloudy skies just out to the west of washington and raindrops falling just out to the west of the metro area as well. so your friday evening planner, showers moving in here over about the next 60 to 90 minutes. off and on rain likely across most of the metro between 8:00 and 10:00 this evening. looks like the rainier weather may linger up into at least the first part of your saturday as well. there it is on doppler. couple rumbles of thunder in the mountains of west virginia. more raindrops on 66 to the west of warrington, inbound into the

city. so if you have plans on your friday evening, may not be a washout, but i'd at least have your umbrella ready to go. the west nile virus is spreading in our area. two men have come down with the mosquito-born virus in virginia and in maryland there's been one more case making five known cases there. news 4's melissa mollett has more on a local man recovering from the illness. >> reporter: dr. arias with the fairfax county health department has spent his life studying mosquitos. when he had flulike symptoms last year, the last thing he thought of was west nile virus. >> never crossed my mind it could be west nile virus. >> reporter: by the time he was diagnosed with a blood test, he'd begun having seizures. since it's a virus, only symp m symptoms can be treated so doctors put him into a coma. he spent two months in the hospital. another four learning to walk. still, he's only 30% recovered. >> when i came out of a coma, i could not sit up in bed by

myself without help. >> reporter: right now, there are five confirmed human west nile cases in maryland. two in virginia, and none in the district. the incubation period is three to five days. >> 80% of the people that get west nile virus have no symptoms whatsoever. 80%. they get bit, they get infected, and they get resolved. their immune system is good enough to resolve it. >> reporter: this time of year, bug repellent. >> at the end of the day they're cover in them. they don't care. i'm like, let's put benadryl. they're like, no. >> reporter: because of warmer weather, our area is seeing the virus early. >> we are seeing less mosquitos but the infection rate is still high. >> reporter: but the number of infected mosquitos is on par with years past. many counties gather and test the pests. fairfax county collects 100,000 mosquitos a year and along 123 here they put insecticide in

catch bins three times a year. she bought this net to protect lucas. >> this is specifically to keep insects and mosquitos at bay. that's what i've used so far. he hasn't been bitten. >> reporter: in dallas, texas, they've launched an aerial assault on mosquitos, an outbreak there has killed ten people and sickened 230. >> they have almost half of all the cases that have been reported. >> reporter: remember, there are all kinds of ways to beat the bug. sprays and wipes. there are pesticides, even a light coat can help. all of these things great investments since bugs cannot just be annoying, but of course, mosquitos can make you very, very sick. back to you. >> several people in maryland are dealing with the swine flu after having contact with pigs. there are six people, five children and a grown-up in queen an anne's county with the influenza virus strain, the strain is the same one that's been found recently in a number of other states. none of the victims has developed a serious illness. symptoms are the same as the

flu. fever, sore throat and a cough. a homicide investigation is now under way where police have identified remains they found in the woods. 20-year-old jessica lynn lee disappeared from brooklyn park, maryland, in may. on august 6th, someone found a human skull in the woods off richie highway in the pasadena area. the medical examiner determined the remains belong to lee. detectives say it's not clear exactly how she was killed. 23 children across the nation have died this summer after being left in hot cars and federal transportation officials say eight of those deaths happened just last week. earlier this summer, the federal government launched a program called "look before you lock" to remind parents of the danger of leaving children behind. the public awareness campaign came to alexandria today. a memorial garden showed the names and faces of children who have died after being forgotten in hot cars. one father knows the danger all

too well. his 17-month-old daughter died two years ago in florida after he left her in the car. >> something that i don't wish upon anybody, you know, to have to go through. it's something that i continue to have to deal with on a daily basis along with my family and friends. >> reginald mckinnon pleaded guilty to felony charges and was sentenced to probation. now he's sharing his story with other parents hoping to prevent similar tragedies. you may have seen them or heard the roar of motorcycles this afternoon. the annual september 11th anniversary ride brought hundreds of motorcyclists through maryland and parts of northern virginia. they began in shanksville, pennsylvania, this morning. paying respects to the people who died aboard flight 93 there. this ride is organized by america's 9/11 foundation, a group that honors the victims of the terror attacks and supports first responders. tomorrow, they'll ride up i-95 into new york city and make

their way to the world trade center memorial. if you plan to take metro to get around this weekend, expect play delays. track work on four of the system's five lines. the red line, the tacoma, brookland and rhode island avenue stations will all be closed. take a free shuttle bus between silver spring and noma-gallaudet. ft. totten will be open for green and yellow line trains. single tracking on the orange, blue and green lanes. all the work starts tonight at 10:00 and should be finished monday morning. students may not be excited about going back to school. gallaudet is bringing them back with a sweet new pad. the new residence hall was designed with an architectural concept using wider halls and larger windows. it makes interaction easier among deaf and hard of hearing students. the univerty president says he's anxious to see how students take advantage of the new building. >> translator: oh, they're already so excited. i would say the best part about

when you win gold at the olympic games you're instantly famous. last night, gold medal gymnast jordyn wieber came back home to michigan. hundreds of people waited at the airport for her to arrive. and also outside her house. one of the biggest questions is, perhaps, will she go for the gold again in rio in 2016? >> it's hard to think about right now just because we've just finished the olympics but it's definitely always in the back of my mind and it's a possibility. i'd love to stay in the sport as long as i can. >> she gets a break. in two weeks she'll head off for the kelloggs tour of champions. famous filmmaker spike lee has new movie out next weekend called "red hook summer." it tackles class issues in brooklyn. spike lee visited our studio this morning and talked to barbara harrison. >> it's about this kid growing up in suburban atlanta, sent to

hagerstown, western washington county, an inch of rain has come down on your friday afternoon. showers moving into the metropolitan area over the next couple hours. rain likely between 7:00 and 10:00 this evening then cloudy and off and on showers may linger through much of the late evening into the overnight hours as well. by the time you get to tomorrow morning, temperatures well back into the 60s north and west. upper 60s in town. still low to mid 70s bayside locations because the bay water temperature is still above 80 degrees. then for tomorrow's high temperatures, only in the low 80s. plenty of clouds around tomorrow morning and rain drops likely through at least the front half of your saturday morning, but gradually i do think the weather will begin to improve tomorrow afternoon on into sunday. here's a look at live doppler. no rain just yet. too close to the capital beltsway. they're all part of a broken line of rain showers with embedded thunderstorms now right along the crest of the mountains thence extending all the way down into parts of south side virginia. this band of broken rain showers needs to come through here. the thing is, once it goes

through, the weather front that's pushing the raindrops stalls out by late tomorrow afternoon down into southern maryland, down to the beaches. as a result, if you're headed over the bridge and down to the beach this weekend, a very catchy kind of not a good day. not a good day at the beach tomorrow. i'm trying to think of a nicer way to say not worth going because it's still worth going. even a bad weekend an the beach is still better than a good weekend at home sometimes. better weather by late sunday and monday. for us, overnight tonight, rain likely. one or two rumbles of thunder. not looking for a lot of severe weather. one or two thunderstorms in the next hour or two could briefly reach severe limits. not looking for a big problem, though. tomorrow, cloudy and wet in the morning. breaks of sunshine tomorrow afternoon. especially north and west. you folks out where it's raining the hardest toward hagerstown and martinsburg and winchester will have a lot more sunshine tomorrow than your friends and neighbors in st. mary's county will. it will probably be cloudy and wet for much if not all of your saturday. a 60% chance of rain tomorrow. mostly loaded up in the front

tours in iraq and two in afghanistan where he was injured. he's been injured actually three times and is now on medical retirement. their new home was de-natdonate through a partnership with jpmorgan chase and operation home front. for years operation home front has provided assistance to family of vets offering financial and at times even food assistance, but providing an actual home is a fairly new endeavor for the non-profit. so far they've provided 16 families with homes and are in the process of preparing about 90 more. most of these homes were either foreclosed or given back to the bank, so it's an opportunity to turn something that was really sad for another family into a blessing for some of america's heroes. >> so it's just amazing that we're able to give a home to a proud warrior and his family wh patriotically. >> it's still shocking. i'm still a little bit in shock. it's a lot to take in. so, a lot of room.'s great.

a florida vacation turned deadly for a connecticut woman. she dropped 150 feet into the water while parasailing with her husband. it was officially ruled an accident. her harness broke, but as mark potter reports, some are calling for rules to regulate the industry. >> reporter: on any sunny day along the ocean beach, they can be seen dotting the sky. parasails, towed by boats and thrilling tourists high above the waves. it's an exciting ride.

>> oh, wonderful. >> reporter: that usually is safe. but not this week. off pompano beach, florida, 28-year-old kathleen miskell and her husband, steven, were vacationing from connecticut and took a parasailing ride together in a side by side harness. along the way officials say there was an apparent equipment failure and kathleen fell 150 to 200 feet into the ocean and to her death. >> the information that we have at this point, the physical evidence and also some of the witness statements that we have indicate that it was a malfunction of the harness. >> reporter: officials say this is the boat involved in the accident with the parasail still on the back deck. rescuers say after the accident the crew had to first reel in steven miskell to safety then circle back to recover kathleen trying unsuccessfully to revive her. crew members were shaken by the accident. >> you got to have some, you know, some sympathy for these people i would think. >> somebody got hurt severely, man, what do you want me to feel? >> reporter: kathleen's father got the horrible news in

connecticut where he later talked about his last conversation with his daughter about her parasailing trip. >> i said, just be safe, you know? that was it. she said, i'll call you when we're down. and we never got a call that she was down. >> reporter: the parasail safety council, an industry group, estimates in the last 30 years, there have been 130 million rides involving parasails using harnesses. there have also been 429 serious injuries and 72 fatalities. only nine of them during those years involving confirmed equipment failure. parasailing is an unregulated industry in terms of the equipment used, and the pompano beach mayor says he's tried unsuccessfully to change that. >> i don't understand why we don't regulate this. it's so simple. and who would fight against such regulations when you are really saving lives? >> the national transportation safety board is sending an
