miles an hour. the temperatures do range quite a bit. west virginia they're at 60. we're in the middle 70s. la plate ta, you are still at 67. last night's rain is along the coast. the beach will be touch and go today. for us, in pretty good shape. we're looking nice this weekend. cooler 80s instead of those 90s. our next chance of rain will be sneaking in. i'll tell you about it when i see you in just a bit. >> breaking news near woodbridge, virginia, i-95 is just reopening to all traffic after a deadly hit and run accident. virginia state police say a man was hit by a car near another car stopped on the shoulder. the car that hit the man did not stop. a reconstruction team spent more than eight hours on the scene, which kept the interstate closed during that time. expect delays in that area still. and there's another hit and run, this one in fairfax county. police there tell us a pedestrian was hit in the 9800

block of fairfax boulevard. this is video from the scene that just came into our newsroom. police are looking for the driver who they say did not stop. >> also this morning, police are trying to identify a would-be robber killed in a bizarre holdup when his plan literally backfired. a cab picked up a man at the largo station and drove him to bowie. the man then demanded money from the cabbie, then started to douse the cabbie with a flammable liquid. when he went to light that liquid, he set himself on fire. other cab drivers say there is often danger at picking up riders at metro stations. >> sometimes they just come and get in the cab. we don't know the sbengs. that's why we make the presence of police here all the time. >> the cab driver escaped with only minor injuries. the rob are was killed. police identified the prince george's county man who died in a freak accident just days after becoming a new dad.

authorities say that the 31-year-old of green belt maryland was driving at the delaware toll plaza when a trangter trailer made an illegal u-turn. the truck then slammed into a vehicle killing the man. friends and family plan to hold a tribute next saturday at the washington convention center. >> now to decision 2012 and newly minted running mate paul ryan. the wisconsin congressman is in the villages in florida, an area known for its retirement community. ryan misspent more days in the commonwealth than any other battleground state since he joined the ticket. steve handelsman has more on his push for virginia votes. >> paul ryan's first roll in the race was on display to push financial responsibility and the choice republicans say voters have. >> which is a nation further in debt, further in doubt, a nation going into decline or we can get

back to school is in full swing in prince george's county. and now the public school system has named a new interim superintendent. his name is dr. alvin crawley and he'll serve for the 2012/2013 school year. he's a veteran in the field. he comes from d.c. public schools. william hite left the top post last month for a job in philadelphia. as one of the first systems to go back-to-school, prince george's county kids are enjoying their final weekend of summer. >> yeah, for them, i'm sure they want it to last really long. but believe it or not, there's fun to be had while preparing for monday's first day of school. derrick ward joins us from upper marlboro where kids can get free school supplies and health screenings. it looks like you picked up a little something, too. >> it's been decades since i have worn a backpack, but this is how i used to carry mine in

school. bringing back memories. a lot of reasons to come here to the back-to-school fair. they're going to have health screenings. there will be parental workshops, school supplies and the backpacks. that's what's on tap here at the equestrian center. they expect 3,000 people to attend. this is a back-to-school fair. a lot of kids say it is not fair, but you can now say there is a fair. there's information and thins on county services. a lot of agencies here represented. they'll be -- the superintendent, it will be a chance for folks to come in and meet the new superintendent. joining me now is tamer ra henry. we just got done with our regular olympics now time for the scholastic olympics. >> right. scholastic olympics is academic competition that celebrates the brilliant minds in the dmv.

police arrested a man who tried to bring a loaded 9 millimeter handgun into a carmike cinema in georgia. a survey by consulting firm screen engine shows 17% of people say they're still skeptical about seeing new releases on the big screen. late night showings are particularly affected. the survey found that teens, especially females are most likely to avoid going to the movies. six months since whitney houston was found dead in a los angeles holt rotel room but "sp" gives fanses a chance to say good-bye. >> reporter: it was whitney houston's first acting role in 15 years. sadly it would be her last. >> sparkle, you can have a gift. it's how you use it. >> reporter: the 48-year-old houston wrapped production on the film she helped produce just

and now from washington's leading news station, this is news 4 today. >> good morning. everyone. welcome to news 4 today. i'm angie goff. >> i'm richard jordan. we're on top of breaking news near woodbridge, virginia, that's where a bad accident left a bad backup earlier. these are liveictu ps of northbound i-95. that's where the backup happened this morning after a deadly hit and run. virginia state police say a man was struck and killed. the victim was near another car pulled over on the shoulder. that's when police say another driver came up and hit him.

that driver did not stop. a reconstruction team spent eight hours at that scene which is what kept the interstate closed. there still may be a little leftover backup just as police finish their investigation there. >> more information in about a deadly hit and run in fairfax county. police there say a 62-year-old homeless man was trying to cross fairfax boulevard when he was hit by a jeep compass suv and the driver kept going. a witness helped officers track down the jeep in arlington. but police are still looking for the driver. time right now just one minute after the half hour and time to check on our forecast. >> that's right. let's check in with meteorologist kim martucci. she's ventured outside to the storm 4 weather deck. >> so nice out here. i'm really going to miss -- after summer's over -- do you guys hear those cricket things shouting away? they're having a shouting match. they must be chirping about the great weather. it's 74 degrees.

checkpoint. the troop s killed were part of pakistan's military frontier corps. groups in our area have stepped up security following reportses that the man who shot a security guard at the family research council had a second target. the address for the traditional values coalition was found on the shooter. the guard wounded in the attack got a special visitor at the hospital and as news 4's jackie bensen reports, there's more encouraging news about his recovery. >> reporter: this is a screen grab of floyd corken's facebook page. it was taken just after he walked in and shot the security guard lee johnson stating, quote, i don't like your politics. a handwritten sign at his family's home in herndon reads, no trespassing. the center, a gay community organization where corkins volunteered has been beseenled

by reporters. a new handwritten sign there reading closed, thursday and friday. officials confirm he attended george mason university for two years but did not obtain a masters degree as has been reported. the odd discovery of 15 chick-fil-a sandwiches in corkins' backpack has prompted wider concerns. conservative policy organizations who weighed in on the controversy started by the chain's owner. the dc-based organization for marriage. >> we don't want to reveal those but we've had to beef up security. had is not the first time we've had threats like this. i think there's some ownership you have to take for when you don't give your opponents the benefit of the doubt. >> reporter: the family research council released a statement on leo johnson's condition this afternoon saying, quote, it will take time, but he will be back with us soon, for which we are all grateful.

jackie bensen, news 4 today. students at the university of maryland want chick-fil fill kicked off its campus. more than 500 students and staff have already signed the petition. the group says it is outraged at chic fill la's ceo views on same-sex marriage. he recently told a christian radio station he supports traditional marriage. students say chick-fil-a does not embrace equality which is a value approved by the school. >> while everyone has a right to free speech, i don't agree with their stance. >> chick-fil-a is under contract for this year according the diamondback newspaper. women will converge on capitol hill for a demonstration. it's called the we are women rally. organizers say they're trying to bring national attention to

issues such as equal health care and equal pay on the job. they're working to get legislation proposed that supports their views. eleanor holmes norton will give the opening address of this rally. it begins at 10:30 on the west lawn of the capitalble. a ride to remember victims. a motorcycle group rode somerset, pennsylvania down to the pentagon. earlier this morning the group left the pentagon and headed to new york city to continue their tribute. another aerial assault against mosquitoes in dallas, texas. last night planes crisscrossed dallas county spraying an insecticide. soishls say about half of the county has been covered by the spray. so far ten people have died and another 200 got sick. west nile cases are also starting to spring up here in

our area. this week, the number of human cases in maryland increase to do so five. there had been two confirmed cases in virginia but none in the district this year. a mosquito expert and doctor at the fairfax county health department learned firsthand how serious the disease can be. by the time he was diagnosed last year he was having seizuurs and doctors put him in a coma to help him recover. >> my wife thought that she lost me. i was intubated. i couldn't breathe. >> he had to learn to walk again and is still only about 30% recovered. still, the doctor points out that 80% of people who get west nile never even know it because their immune systems fight it off without trouble. >> today a community activist is living on in a back-to-school drive and festival. the lenny harris organization will be collecting supplies for kids in need today. harris who was murdered during a

robbery last year founded the organization called operation hope. the supplies can be dropped off at the lenny harris one love legacy festival. it is in the field next to george washington middle school. the group that manages the dulles toll road wants to hear your thoughts on its new proposed rate increase. it would help pay for metro's extensions through tyson's corner and dulles airport. the rates would go up about 50 cents next year, then bump up again twice before 2015. the authority is taking public comments online. they'll also be planning public hearings for september. the fbi is investigating a popular commuter rail system over apparent kickbacks. a virginia railway spokesman says that the investigation involving a subcontractor. the company was hired for a

you're watching news 4 today. >> if you're traveling on some of virginia's major highways today, watch your speed as state police are stepping up patrols across the state including i-95 and 81. they say it's to keep an eye on extra traffic expected as college students head back to school this weekend. along with buckling up and watching your speed, police also suggest carefully packing your car with all that dorm room stuff so nothing jars loose or blocks your view. there's also a nationwide crackdown on drunk drivers as the back-to-school season begins. police started stepping up checkpoints and sobriety tests yesterday. new research shows 10,000 people die from zens caused by drunk driving in 2010 and about 70% of them were caused by someone whose blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal driving limit of 0.8%. the crackdown begins labor day
