a hit-and-run accident in the middle of the night kills a man crossing a busy street in fairfax, but a witness takes action, and helps police track down the car that hit the victim. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. that deadly hit-and-run happened early this morning on fairfax boulevard. derrick ward has more on the search for the driver, and the clues left behind that might help police solve this case. >> reporter: it was about 1:10 a.m. police say 62-year-old james davis was crossing route 50 in virginia here in the 6800 block. made it to the median, no

farther. >> where the victim was struck, the circular rings. from this impact here, thrown approximately 245 feet down the road. >> reporter: the driver of the jeep liberty did not stop but the vehicle has been found. another motorist saw the accident and followed it to arlington county. it's evident, leaving clues that can lead investigators to the vehicle and the registered owner. >> right boot found over here, and the different things out here, things they collected from the car. windshield wipers. glass. >> reporter: all mingled in the road with the few belongings the victim carried in a bag. >> folks who work along this stretch says the victim was a mainstay in the community. >> 6:30, 6:00, come up and say hi. >> reporter: he was well known and even through life's struggles, sobriety and relapse ashes constant. >> even down on his luck, always trying to help other people. >> reporter: his fate was one

all too kmong among the family. plaques on the wall over the door to the chapel bear the names of those who died, too many hit by cars. >> i've been here 13 years but a number of our guests who have -- who have died that way, who have been hit by cars around this area. >> reporter: fou they pass beneath this sad roll of the dead and brpray for the dead whe name will soon be here on this wall. >> praying for the driver, too. things like this, everyone's a victim. derrick ward, news 4. another deadly hit-and-run last night. this one along i-95 in northern virginia. police say a woman hit a man standing next to his suv on the shoulder of i-59 north near mile marker 162. happened around midnight. the accident completely shut down 95 north for hours. all the lanes didn't reopen until around 9:00 this morning. police tracked down the driver. 19-year-old carol rood-johnson. she's now charged with driving under the influence.

and police in it district are investigating an assault near eastern market, it happened around 8:30 this morning. officers were called to 7th and north carolina streets, when they got there, found a 29-year-old man unconscious on the ground. he was taken to the hospital in serious condition. police have no suspects or a motive right now. act vichts gathered at the capitol to fight what they're calling a war on women's rights. part of a group called we are women. members demanded that women receive equal pay on the job. they also protested anti-abortion measures introduced in state houses across the country. >> i've had an abortion. it was a very good decision and a very good experience for me, but ultimately i have a daughter and i know that she needs advice as she grows up. she needs the right to make choices about her body. she deserves fair pay, she deserves an equal rights amendment soap we don't have to fight about this over and ober again. >> anti-abortion activists held a counterprotest nearby.

and vice presidential candidate paul ryan is spending a busy weekend out on the campaign trail. ryan introduced his mom betty at a florida retirement community today, brought her along to put a personal spin on the heated debate over medicare. ryan told seniors at the convenient the romney/ryan ticket will not change any medicare benefits that seniors are entitled to. speaking one-on-one in virginia yesterday, he insistses he fully supports his running mate's proposal over a different plan he pushed in congress. >> we voted to repeal obamacare. i'm on the romney/ryan ticket, and the romney plan is to repeal everything in obamacare including the cuts to medicare. >> hear more of julie's conversation coming up on news 4 at 11:00 after the redskins preseason game. meanwhile, president obama was on the campaign trail today in new hampshire. he fired back at ryan's attacks on medicare claiming his health care overhaul helped save
