a hit-and-run accident in the middle of the night kills a man crossing a busy street in fairfax, but a witness takes action, and helps police track down the car that hit the victim. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. that deadly hit-and-run happened early this morning on fairfax boulevard. derrick ward has more on the search for the driver, and the clues left behind that might help police solve this case. >> reporter: it was about 1:10 a.m. police say 62-year-old james davis was crossing route 50 in virginia here in the 6800 block. made it to the median, no

farther. >> where the victim was struck, the circular rings. from this impact here, thrown approximately 245 feet down the road. >> reporter: the driver of the jeep liberty did not stop but the vehicle has been found. another motorist saw the accident and followed it to arlington county. it's evident, leaving clues that can lead investigators to the vehicle and the registered owner. >> right boot found over here, and the different things out here, things they collected from the car. windshield wipers. glass. >> reporter: all mingled in the road with the few belongings the victim carried in a bag. >> folks who work along this stretch says the victim was a mainstay in the community. >> 6:30, 6:00, come up and say hi. >> reporter: he was well known and even through life's struggles, sobriety and relapse ashes constant. >> even down on his luck, always trying to help other people. >> reporter: his fate was one

all too kmong among the family. plaques on the wall over the door to the chapel bear the names of those who died, too many hit by cars. >> i've been here 13 years but a number of our guests who have -- who have died that way, who have been hit by cars around this area. >> reporter: fou they pass beneath this sad roll of the dead and brpray for the dead whe name will soon be here on this wall. >> praying for the driver, too. things like this, everyone's a victim. derrick ward, news 4. another deadly hit-and-run last night. this one along i-95 in northern virginia. police say a woman hit a man standing next to his suv on the shoulder of i-59 north near mile marker 162. happened around midnight. the accident completely shut down 95 north for hours. all the lanes didn't reopen until around 9:00 this morning. police tracked down the driver. 19-year-old carol rood-johnson. she's now charged with driving under the influence.

and police in it district are investigating an assault near eastern market, it happened around 8:30 this morning. officers were called to 7th and north carolina streets, when they got there, found a 29-year-old man unconscious on the ground. he was taken to the hospital in serious condition. police have no suspects or a motive right now. act vichts gathered at the capitol to fight what they're calling a war on women's rights. part of a group called we are women. members demanded that women receive equal pay on the job. they also protested anti-abortion measures introduced in state houses across the country. >> i've had an abortion. it was a very good decision and a very good experience for me, but ultimately i have a daughter and i know that she needs advice as she grows up. she needs the right to make choices about her body. she deserves fair pay, she deserves an equal rights amendment soap we don't have to fight about this over and ober again. >> anti-abortion activists held a counterprotest nearby.

and vice presidential candidate paul ryan is spending a busy weekend out on the campaign trail. ryan introduced his mom betty at a florida retirement community today, brought her along to put a personal spin on the heated debate over medicare. ryan told seniors at the convenient the romney/ryan ticket will not change any medicare benefits that seniors are entitled to. speaking one-on-one in virginia yesterday, he insistses he fully supports his running mate's proposal over a different plan he pushed in congress. >> we voted to repeal obamacare. i'm on the romney/ryan ticket, and the romney plan is to repeal everything in obamacare including the cuts to medicare. >> hear more of julie's conversation coming up on news 4 at 11:00 after the redskins preseason game. meanwhile, president obama was on the campaign trail today in new hampshire. he fired back at ryan's attacks on medicare claiming his health care overhaul helped save

how his legacy is impacting the community, darcy? >> reporter: this was supposed to wrap up at 6:00. it's still going strong. hundreds still remain here. lenny harris wasn't just the founder of the festival. he was the man who kept things going year after year after year, and after he was killed his widow stepped up to make sure his good works continue. ♪ >> reporter: in alexandria the one love festival happened this year without its founder, activist lenny harris murdered one year ago. his wife deborah stepped up and continued the event not to fill his shoes but keep his memory alive calling it the lenny harris legacy festival. >> really emotional, but i'm really happy. it's a beautiful day. i'm sure lenny would be happy. people are really participating. they're really showing a lot of love. and that's what this is all about. >> reporter: lenny harris held

the festival for several years to help children and families. he went missing last september. then in january, his body was found dumped down a well in fort washington. for those attending the event today, it's a way to show what he did was worth continuing. tony was one of the many men harris mentored. >> i was a rough kid growing up. so he, like, helped me, keep me out of the streets, you know what i'm saying? take me to little meetings, you know, to make things peaceful. >> reporter: it's a time for celebration. kids to have fun and get a free backpack with supplies before school bells ring. and for neighbors to remember a man who did so much for his community. >> i know he's smiling above and glad, everybody just keeps his movement going, because what's that's he did to help people, and we just carrying on the legacy. i feel real goodell to to be o

talk about super strength pap massachusetts man saved his friend by lifting an suv that was right on top of him. happened thursday. the friend was changing his flat tire, had the suv jacked up but it somehow came crashing down on him. that's when carlos castro sprang into action using his bare hands picked up the suv just long enough for his friend to get out. the man is expected to be just fine. in arizona, storms led to flash flooding that left drivers stranded there. in fact, eight people had to be rescued yesterday. some cars tried to get through the standing water without luck. strong winds also knocked out power to nearly 1,500 people. >> not dealing with anything like that around here, fortunately. chuck? >> right.

we did have rain late last night into early this morning. live outside, a beautiful saturday afternoon in progress. bright sunshine. gleaming off the top of the u.s. capitol building this afternoon, and even the view from down over ronald reagan national airport. temperatures generally speaking in the 70s to near 80 degrees. here's reagan national. a few clouds out there on your late saturday afternoon. still 84 degrees at national airport. nice breeze oust north, nine miles per hour and due points down into the comfy 50s made a real nice difference between yesterday and today. upper 70s and low 80s for now. that won't be the case for much longer. the nice, dry air in place cools off relatively quickly. no rain, no worries for your saturday evening. skies will be clearing out late tonight. temperatures back into the 60s and 70s by 11:00 this evening. there's the radar. nothing to worry about around our area. rain drops around northeastern, north carolina. a nice mild evening turning into a relatively cool morning with

plenty of sunshine to start out on your sunday. a little weather front just down to our south is going to bring clouds in here and an opportunity for a little rain as early as late tomorrow. probably not until after the sun goes down. we need the rainfall. that's good news. that rainfall chance lingers into monday as well. that's also some welcome news. yop think you need to worry about rain drops on sunday. most, if anything, as far as rain comes way late in the day. probably not until after the sun goes down. headed down to the beaches. still kind of showery weather tomorrow at the coastline. monday doesn't look all that pretty, but improving weather starts to arrive tuesday. here toned, schooler, a nice start tomorrow. low 70s bay side. upper 60s in town and upper 50, in the shenandoah valley and mountains. tomorrow, good looking day. sunshine in the morning. clouds in the afternoon and a few drops possible, probably not until after the sun goes down. one the sun's down, we don't care about the rain after that. 84 tomorrow. 80 monday. our best chance at getting rain.
