manager tony defrances he could, no manager, staple result. they added to the major league worst record and are at 39-83. coming up tonight on nbc, sunday night football preseason action between the colts and pittsburgh steelers. the sunday game for the new colts game andrew luck. a quick preview, here is michelle tafoya at heinz field. >> it's hard to imagine things getting better off for colts rookie quarterback and draft pick andrew luck. his very first nfl pass, a 63-yard touchdown. add that to the recent success of rookie quarterbacks like the record setting cam newton or andy dalton who led the bengals to the playoffs. expectations are on the rise. >> that was the easiest touchdown pass i had all my life. but, no, i don't think can you worry about what other people's expectations are whether they're low or high, you know, in
6:01 pm
between. wherever they are. you worry about what your coaches expect of you, what your teammates expect of you. and at the end of the day, your own expectations. >> julie, things get a little tougher tonight for luck and the colts offense as they face the steelers. and the nfl top rated defense from last season. you can hear the rest of luck's conversation with cris collinsworth at halftime of sunday night football. it's the colts and steelers from pittsburgh. >> all right. thanks, michelle. we look forward to that, sunday night football is just over two hours away. now back to cherry hills village, colorado. . >> back at cherry hill. this is michael weaver's putt. 16th hole. it went in with a bit more speed than they came with. and anticipating it was right in
6:02 pm
the back. but it went in. and his margin of lead went up. weaver is dormy, too. he has driven the ball in the right hand rough. >> here's a good look at what the players faced. that island green. it is not a big target if you tried to hit it into the green. it is very flat. if you carry the water in the front, it's very difficult to stop the ball on the green. >> there is the shot of the island green, one of the original island greens. william flynn designed it in 1922. very famous hole and the green itself is quite famous in that 1960 u.s. open that we were talking about earlier, ben hogan hit 34 consecutive greens in
6:03 pm
regulation and then spun it back off that 17th green into the water and lost the u.s. open and never really contended again. >> what is weaver's situation now? >> he is only six yards or so from where he drove the ball this morning. the good news this time is a lie. i don't think it's good enough to try to knock the ball on this green. probably a good thing. >> yeah. he really has a decision to make is this young man right here. 230 to the front edge. 250 to the hole. >> with this altitude, it's about 10% less. so that is about 200 yards to the front of the green. this looks like a really short club, roger. >> i think that's a good call. i just don't see how you can stop the ball on this green.
6:04 pm
>> this is the way i played the hole earlier this morning. he laid up well back just like he has right now to give himself a longer shot to where he could put some spin on it. and actually he played a very nice shot within about six or seven feet of the hole. >> and then watch that young man knock it in the water. >> there's the lie. roger said not good enough in his mind to go from green in two. i don't think it was on a tee. >> i don't either at this point. he's two up with two holes to play. his opponent has already laid up. it's not like his opponent is on the green with an eagle opportunity. right now what you want to do is try to match your opponent shot for shot. if you can walk down there and put your ball right next to his, say okay, it's a wedge contest
6:05 pm
6:07 pm
. lawelcome back to the 112th u.s. amateur. >> this is from 95 yards. >> sliding the ball. >> he got it. nice. similar shot to what he hit this morning. >> sow has figured out a very good game plan to get this par 5. >> a little bit of wind coming to the left. michael weaver now needs to play his third. >> he has 90. 90 yards to the hole.
6:08 pm
6:09 pm
weaver's will be down hill with a big swing from right to left. fox should be straight up the hill. still a lot of bounce in steven fox's step and big smile on his face walking down that fairway. this is who michael weaver is trying to join. there is a bunch of them. >> back in 1985, sam randolph from the usc, the cousin of our producer tom randolph. i guess good golf runs in their genes, doesn't it? mom played college golf at ucla. >> across the bridge there to the island green. two completely different putts. one from behind the hole and one from below it. very enthusiastic crowd. they have been treated to a wonderful match. >> really all week long, mark.
6:10 pm
i was here ear early in the week to get a feel for the golf course. i was amazed at the number of spectators out even on monday and tuesday. it has been very well supported by the denver area. >> we mentioned earlier in the broadcast that this is the ninth usga championship that cherry hills as hosted. it's a venue that usga loves. they love the usga. the club has done a fabulous job here this week. >> usga loves to go to golf course that's test every aspect a player's game including his mind. certainly this is that type of golf course. some long holes where you have to have links and shorter holes where you need to think your way through what club to play off the tee and certainly when you get to the greens as good a challenge as any golf course
6:11 pm
anywhere. >> they began this match at 7:30 a.m. this morning local time. and now michael weaver has a putt to win the match. >> i don't see the big right to left. >> okay. >> it is more from the right? >> yes. >> so i think there is a shade of movement to the left. but not huge. >> hit awfully hard. >> he is going to leave himself some 3 1/2, maybe 4 feet. let's watch.
6:12 pm
whoa. slow down. yikes. not what i had in mind, michael. >> all right, roger, the putt for fox coming back up the hill. >> yeah. i don't see much in this, maybe a little movement left. weaver's did move more than i thought it would. but still it wasn't huge. i think this may go a little that way. you see fox's dad has been on his bag until this final 18 holes. >> hard to imagine what's going through his dad's mind right now. >> well, i talked to him a little bit on the range earlier. he said i'm so proud of my son and what he's been able to accomplish. no matter what the outcome is and, you know, we've had a great week together. it will be something we'll remember forever.
6:13 pm
>> he needs this one. >> got it! boy, you talk about a couple of clutch putts that he has holed. that one was just dead center. we talked earlier about the pga tour playoffs this labor day weekend. the fedex cup playoffs continue with the deutsche bank championship. coverage begins labor day weekend on golf channel and nbc. we go to the famous finishing hole. >> yeah, and what a finishing hole it is, mark. 487-yard par 4. you can see water down the left. fairway slopes he severely. rough is thick and not very good to play from.
6:14 pm
second shot is uphill some 30 plus feet to a green that is also severely sloping from right to left and back to front. it is such a difficult hole. the hole location today, you see there over on that front right corner on that little shelf in the strokeplay portion of this championship, mark, 312 rounds were played on this hole. only 12 birdies were recorded. it is a tough, tough par 4. >> gary, this week i've followen in love with this hole. it really has become one of my favorite fishing holes in american championship golf. a lot of things can go wrong here. you remember ochoa had a chance to win the women's open. hits the ground before the ball. >> one of the worst hooks i've ever seen in competition. and it really was amazingly poor for a player of her caliber. >> she would go on to make a quadruple bogey eight on the hole. now these two combatants facing
6:15 pm
the same tee shot. >> they both hit good tee shots here earlier this morning. they do have that in their favor. >> driver again. maybe a shade from the right. this ball going up the right hand side. we'll see. this may need to kick left. did he get it? nope. >> sitting in that primary cut of rough. ball way above his feet. that is going to leave a very tough second shot. michael weaver played 3 wood earlier. looks like he has the same club, roger. >> hit it 20 yards past fox's driver this morning with the 3 wood. he did. he can really hit a hot looking shot with this club. low bullets, as you said.
6:16 pm
this is going to the left hand side. this is going to be fine though. unless he hits some horrible bounce. >> he's yelling for it to sit. and it will. >> there is some interested spectators. that is the staff here. it's a terrific one here at cherry hill. you want to save money on car insurance? no problem. you want to save money on rv insurance? no problem. you want to save money on motorcycle insurance? no problem. you want to find a place to park all these things? fuggedaboud it. this is new york. hey little guy, wake up! aw, come off it mate! geico. saving people money on more than just car insurance.
6:18 pm
. we heard all the hype about the 18-year-old that can hit it further than the tour pros. we haven't really seen tiger woods until the u.s. amateur. and he compiled a record in this championship that may well never be broken. three straight u.s. amateur victories, tpc saw grass, new port country club and pumpkin ridge. our first look at that famous fist pump. a lot of people emulate it now. i doubt anyone will emulate three straight amateurs. and that goes with three straight juniors before that, gary. >> can you imagine, mark? that means he won 36 consecutive matches in matchplay. i mean that is it mind boggling.
6:19 pm
>> there is the tlohrong of avi colorado golf fans that have been treated to a terrific match. >> he had a second shot of some 217 yards. one up at the time over brandon hagy. he played a 4 iron. and i tell you, we've been here all week. this was the finest approach shot into the 18th that i have seen the entire week. the green wants to end up there. that is not the case today with the hole over on that far right hand side. this is really hard to get it into that area of the green. >> he has a real disadvantage rig right now roger. >> certainly takes away any shot of getting the ball at the hole or near the hole in my estimation. if he gets this ball anywhere on the green from this lie, it is a
6:21 pm
6:22 pm
>> pretty good. the ball turning to the left side. i just don't know if it can stay there. yes, it can. >> it is up on the front left part of the green and stop right there. that is a wonderful shot. very, very good. >> all right. let's take a look here. we're going to zoom in. watch this right foot. he's going to try to get off his right side so hard to get this club through the grass. look at that foot slip. for him to make that good a contact with the ball, that relevant re really was pretty amazing.
6:23 pm
>> so michael weaver in a completely different situation now for a couple reasons. the biggest one being he is one up in this match. he is now also in the fairway. >> and he is in the mayor's office as we would call it. you couldn't drop a ball in a better spot to play into this hole location or green. i wouldn't be thinking about the hole location though. he has 163 here. >> we heard him mention the chimney on the clubhouse which is a little left of the flagstick. >> lined good. wants it down. >> that will head to the back left corner. will it stay on? >> a little edge there. it is long. i tell what you, neither is a guaranteed two putt, mark. going to be two tough putts. >> we have seen some remarkable putting the last hour.
6:24 pm
this steven fox for birdie down the hill very quick. it looks here like it mate be short. it just drips into the right side. and the putt that michael weaver hit at 16, it didn't go in quite as slowly. >> it did not. it rattled the back of the cup but into the bottom. and then at the par 5 17th, when he most needed it, steven fox up the hill gets better. so three holes in a row, 15, 16, 17 clutch putts. and now who will hit the clutch putt here at 18? it may not be a putt you have to hole. these are, as gary said, tough two putts. >> we want to see the reaction of the two players as they get up to the green. i'm sure that michael weaver has no idea what his ball is that deep into the green.
6:25 pm
>> of course, it was not a missed hole. missed about a four footer. >> but he's going to get the chance to see whether or not he can rectify that mistake. he's going to be away here. >> well, as i view this, by far the easiest one to two putt would be fox's. >> yes. >> this putt of weaver's has some pretty good break to the right from a shelf in the back left. it will run through a bit of a valley turning right. come up out of that valley. and then start trekking a little down hill. very tough putt. if he gets this putt inside four, five feet, he's done a very good job.
6:26 pm
>> it really has been an incredible week for michael weaver. >> yeah, let's take a look at what roger is talking about. he's got to come from here across this part of the green and then up this ridge and then once it gets up on top, it continues to move to the right and starts to pick up speed. so you really got about three elevation changes to deal with, not to mention the break that roger could be four, five, six feet? >> it could, certainly, yeah. yeah. this is a hard putt. fox's putt is more uphill. there is left to right and slow putt from his angle. but an easier putt to get into the hole. >> yeah. there we go. there's a good look as we look from behind the hole back toward where michael weaver will putt from. off one level down through the low, up again to the little shelf on the far right hand side of the green. this is one of those putts,
6:27 pm
roger, if you mis-hit it, it can really make you look foolish. you can miss sh by eight or ten feet. >> easily. >> down through the low. now back up on top. running away. all in all, roger, i'd say that's pretty good. >> and just about five feet. >> importantly, below the hole. so putting back up the slope. >> so that young man now, steven fox, would actually have a putt here to win the hole where he would make it. but, again, not an easy putt. certainly not to hole. >> no.
6:28 pm
this one is really so much more about the speed than it is the break as roger pointed out. it's going to move right but not nearly as much as weaver's putt did. this one to me, roger, is more about hitting it firmly enough. as it climbs that last ridge. it really slows down pretty quickly. >> right. this is a ball hard to get to the hole. >> he's done a good job. a good effort. >> so both putts will be conceded. now all he can do is wait and
6:29 pm
watch. >> you mentioned the three putt by michael weaver this morning. now it was not an easy putt. it was a little left to right break. and he did not hit a good putt. he pushed it. now, roger, he's in a situation that you work so hard to get to. you practice putting for hours with one thing in mind. give yourself a chance to make a putt like this to win a big championship. >> i don't think he's the only one nervous around this 18th green. everyone else is as well. >> he hit it too hard. he just hit it too hard! boy, he thought it was in, too. you could tell from the reaction. >> well, mark, it is almost in a dead center of the hole. it was
