cruiser that crashed. it is a sad night in prince george's county. one officer killed. another seriously hurt. jackie bensen is live at police headquarters where a news conference has just wrapped up. >> we begin with shamari stone. >> that officer here has nonlife threatening injuries. many of his fellow officers have been walking in and out of the hospital praying for him, hoping he recovers soon. they're also offering prayers to the families of his partner who died in the crash. adrian morris is described as a courageous prince george's county police officer. >> police officer morris, 23 years old, joined the pgpd after volunteering as a police explorer for five years. >> reporter: he'd been on the force for 2 1/2 years. fellow officers lowered the flag at half staff after he crashed into a ditch, was ejected, suffering massive head injuries. he died.

>> this is a family, and all of prince george's county government is going to wrap its arms around these two officers and the rest of their colleagues to make sure that we get through this. >> reporter: he dreamed of becoming an officer at 15 years old when he was a police explorer scout. >> he continued his association with the police explorers as an adviser and a mentor. >> really nice people. >> reporter: neighbors telling me officer morris recently moved into this laurel townhouse community. the men and women parked outside his house while paying respects. >> we were talking about a young guy. >> reporter: geordi williams said officer morris was a nice neighbor. >> he was a good guy. i met him. i welcomed him to the neighborhood. >> reporter: you are now looking at a live picture of the prince george's county police department facebook page. people continue to send prayers and thoughts to everyone at the pgpd along with the officers who were involved in this situation. now i must also point out that some people have changed their

profile photos with t blue ribbon to pay respect to the officers. live at prince george's hospital, i'm shamari stone, news 4. >> tonight we're also getting our first look at one of the suspects connected with that police chase. jackie bensen has more. >> reporter: there's a saying in law enforcement work that there is no such thing as a routine call. this began as a call for a minor crime and ended in tragedy. >> i'm not sure the location. >> okay. are you off the beltway? >> yes, ma'am. we're. >> reporter: prince george's county police confirmed the crash that claimed the life of 23-year-old officer adrian morris and left another officer seriously injured began as a call for a minor crime at a shell gas station in laurel. >> this morning, prince george's county police officers assigned to the district 6 station were dispatched to the shell gas station at 6600 sandy spring

road in laurel for an attempted theft from an automobile that had just occurred. two suspects in a gray acura with a temporary license plate unsuccessfully tried to open the car doors of a customer's car and then they took off. >> reporter: the officers pursued the car on to i-95, and that is where the unthinkable happened. officer morris was ejected from the cruiser. at least one witness told investigators the vehicle appeared to have been rammed. >> i can't give you specific details on where it happened, but the officer was ejected from his cruiser. >> reporter: police are searching for two suspects. you only saw a picture of one of them. they are believed to be in a silver acura with temporary tags. and they are wanted also, we understand, in connection with crime that occurred in montgomery county, maryland, earlier today. if you would like to see another photo of that suspect, that prince george's county police reased a short time ago go to

nbcwashington.com. reporting live from prince george's county, jackie bensen, news 4. new tonight, the laurel police officer who was seen slapping a man in handcuffs is now on administrative duty. that report from the local naacp chapter president bob ross. mr. ross told news 4 he met with the laurel police chief and the city attorney. he says the officers off the street is and there now a criminal investigation under way. that in addition to a $3 million lawsuit filed by the victim. we reached out to the city of laurel today but have not yet heard back from them. pressure is growing tonight against a republican senate candidate after his controversial comments on rape. congressman tom aiken of missouri claimed in a tv interview that women's bodies will biologically protect them from getting pregnant during a, quote, legitimate rape. he did not show up to a planned appearance on cnn tonight.

republican party leaderbs are condemning those remarks. aiken did apologize saying he misspoke but also said he's not a quitter. >> from what i understand from doctors, that's really rare. if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. >> his comments about rape were deeply offensive. and i can't defend what he said. i can't defend him. >> the gop considered missouri critical to regain control of the senate. but today the national republican senatorial campaign committee yanked five million dollars in ads from that race and another political action committee pulled its commercial's rung on aiken's behalf. an apology from another member of congress running for re-election. kansas republican kevin yoder. he regrets skinny dipping in the sea of galilee last august. several members of congress were on the trip but yoder is the only one accused of swimming naked. an israeli charity paifor the

trip to show lawmakers the importance of good relations between the two countries. the sea of galilee is a holy site for many christians because that is where the bible says jesus walked on water. some downpours tonight. and it's making things a bit cooler all over the area. doug is here to tell us how long it may last. >> some saw a 10 to 15-degree temperature drop when this came through and just about everybody saw a pretty good amount of rain. some locations picking up 1/10 inch. others well over half an inch of rain. about a quarter of an inch back toward the i-81 corridor. winchester, about over 0.1 in culpeper. qua quantico, 0.4. we're still eight inches below average. still need to see some rainfall. i we think have another chance for some rain coming up over the next couple of days. i'll show you when and let you know if these cooler

temperatures will stick around. >> they could use some rain now the the mississippi. nearly 100 boats are stuck tonight on the mississippi river. right now an 11-mile stretch is closed near greenville, mississippi, because of the low water levels. the coast guard says dredging is now in progress. not clear when it will reopen. the water level are low in several southern states because of the drought. out in california, a state of emergency has been declared following out-of-control wildfires. this fire sparked by lightning over the weekend. it has burned more than 23 square miles, destroyed seven homes near the town of manton. and it is only about 5% contained. the wildfire is one of dozens still burning across the west tonight. d.c. police found a body floating in the potomac river today. that was near the 2400 block of virginia avenue. that's near the thompson boat house. the call came in about 7:00. police still trying to figure out the isdentity of the victim and whether foul play was

involved. a silver spring home was condemned after a ride-on bus slammed into the living room. the driver lost control, barreled through the front of the house about 11:00 this morning. two people were inside. they were not hurt. >> i said is this guy not going to stop? so i went back to the r. boom! right in front of me. >> i thought it was an earthquake at first. so when i seen the bus, i was completely like astounded. i didn't think something like this could happen. >> several people were on the bus at the time. no one there was hurt. police are still trying to figure out what led up to this crash. d.c. police are trying to figure out a timeline gap that might lead them to whoever it was that severely beat a man on capitol hill and left him unconscious. somebody attacked 29-year-old t.c. masslin on his way home from a party just after midnight on sunday along north carolina avenue. but investigators say the man wasn't found until the next morning on a porch several blocks away. police confirmed that street

robberies are on the increase in that area but they say most of those crimes are nonviolent. masslin is now in a hospital clinging to life. a man is arrested for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl after police say he left his wallet at the crime scene. investigators say duron west used a ladder to climb into his neighbor's house in landover, maryland. the victim's mother heard a scream from her sleeping daughter's room and saw west running away. but the suspect's mother says police have the wrong man. >> she said that he was rubbing on her legs. he was rubbing on her legs. she felt him pull the cover off her. >> it's not my son. >> he wouldn't do something like that? >> no, he would not. i got a grand baby in here. if he wants to rape somebody, it could have been my grandbaby. it's not him. >> duron west is being held on a $75,000 bond. in the national cathedral is still a long way from reaching

its goal for money needed to make earthquake repairs. a special fund-eration campaign started last week and ends on thursday. that's the anniversary of the earthquake that rattled the stonework right off the building. the cathedral is hoping to raise about $100,000 before stone masons can officially start installing some of the new stone work. full repairs could take a year. it could cost as much as $25 million to complete. coming up next -- our own version of "shark week." a feeding frenzy caught on tape on the jersey shore. rosie o'donnell talking about the heart attack that she says almost killed her. we'll tell you why she credits a tv commercial with saving her life. and the motorcade rolls in [ male announcer ] since 1996 welfare recipients were required to work.

there are conflicting reports tonight about what drove hollywood director tony scott to kill himself. friends say he had recently been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. members of scott's family, though, say those reports are false. his career started in the '80s when he followed in the footsteps of older brother riddley scott, the director of "alien" and "gladiator." among tony scott's biggest hits are "enemy of the state," "man on fire" and "top gun." tony scott was 68 years old. hollywood is also mourning the loss of one of the original women of comedy. phyllis diller passed away in her sleep this morning at her home in los angeles. she's considered by many as the first female stand-up comedienne. she was a staple at nightclubs and on tv for decades. diller suffered a major heart attack in 1999 forcing her to

retire a few years later. she was 95 years old. comedienne rosie o'donnell is resting at home after suffering a heart attack last night. tonight she's crediting a tv commercial with shafrg life. she searched her symptoms on the internet but she didn't call 911 right away. instead she, took a new aspirin as she had seen in ads on tv. the next day, she went to a cardiologist and found out an artery was 99% blocked and a stent was put in. rosie o'donnell says it is a miracle that she survived. the president and first lady spent the night out on the town with some special guests tonight. they went out to dinner with three campaign contest winners. at mittwood plays in adams morgan. the guests included a music professor, a wildlife smoke jumper and an assistant high school principal. they won the dinner with barack and michelle contest. that contest selects people who

darla moore have each accepted invitations to join the formerly all male club. this october they'll become the first women to wear the famous green jackets there. the club insider told nbc news that rice and moore have been under consideration, they say, for years. but they say the club was determined to admit women on its own terms and at its own deadline. diana nyad is back on course in her attempt to be the first person to swim from cuba to florida without a shark cage. she was expected to arrive in the florida keys some time tomorrow morning but a storm yesterday blew her off course temporarily. she is at least six hours behind schedule now. she is fighting off exhaustion, hypothermia and stings from jellyfish. she turns 63 on wednesday. been outside this evening?

it is delicious. >> you are loving it? >> i'm loving it. the little batch of rain came through. >> it's almost sweater weather out there. >> almost sweater weather. my wife said the same thing. temperatures dropped 10 to 15 degrees this evening. really is quite nice out there. the temperatures have gone up in a couple of locations after that little area of rain has now moved through. want to show you some video. we showed it a minute ago. would this scare you if you were out at the beaches down around maryland or delaware? this was about one state away up toward the jersey shore right off the jersey shore beaches. these are actually called black fin sharks or black tip sharks or spinner sharks. this is very common for them. they are normally not aggressive toward humans, however if humans do get in this area, they are known to attack humans and this was only about 50 yards off the beach. one of the guys shooting this video actually said they started off about a mile and then they started moving in. they are known, and you can see this, they are known as spinner

sharks because they simply jump out of the water, do a little bit of a spin there and go right back in. all of this while they are getting their feed on. and open day at the buffet apparently is what happened out there along the jersey shore. 82 degrees the high temperature here. i think that would scare me just a little bit. low this morning, 69. average high 86. we're below average once again. we're below average the last three. the first time below average three days in a row in about a month. how about that? we need to see cooler numbers. right now, 70. 11:00 at night, it's been very long since we've seen 70 at 11:00. winds right now calm across the area. look at the numbers around the rest of the region. 61 in frederick. 63 in winchester. 65 in la plata. many of you wake up to temperatures in the mid-50s tomorrow morning. not a bad night to open up those windows and turn off that ac. that frontal boundary, that trough that made it through here that did bring the rain is making its way off toward the eastern shore and out there towards the delmarva.

starting to fall apart a little bit. most locations picking up goat amount of rain from 1/10 and half an inch with the exception of the airport. only receiving a trace of rain. went right around the airport. although it did last about an hour for them to get the nets came going. a little hour delay. frontal boundary. and still the clouds back to the west once these clouds begin to exit, we'll see temperatures cool down. many yirs areas will be in the overnight. we have a slight chance of a shower tomorrow. most of us, though, will stay on the dry side. a mixture of sun and clouds. this area loave pressure moves closer. a better chance of not just cloud cover but also a little better chance of some shower activity. you probably need the umbrellas on wednesday. i'm not looking for anything strong or severe. just an isolated thunderstorm if any do develop. partily cloudy early tomorrow morning. cloudy with areas of fog. heads up for the fog out to the west. 56 to 69 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, sun and
