11:00 am
good morning, everyone. i'm barbara harrison. it's friday, august 24th, 2012. we're following breaking news out of new york right now. we have live video to show you from the empire state building. there it is. at least two people are dead after a shooting outside that building from around 9:00 a.m. this morning from when it started. one of the victims is a gunman. police say as many as ten people were injured, but unclear how many of them were hit by bullets. this is not a terrorist threat. let us repeat that. not a terrorist threat. the shooters started firing indiscriminately at people
11:01 am
outside the building. our sister station in new york wnbc says it was a workplace argument that spill under to the street. we'll continue to follow this breaking news story throughout the morning. d.c. police are investigating a bank break-in that may be part of a larger crime spree. someone broke into the a & t bank this morning. news 4 megan mcgrath is live at the bank in georgetown with more on the investigation. megan? >> well, barbara, you could see the bank over my shoulder here on wisconsin avenue in the heart of georgetown. the fbi still here on the scene investigating what happened here early this morning. now, there are three attempted bank robberies that hapened in the last year, two of them very recently. they have striking similarities. the would-be robber cut through the wall of a building next door to gain access into the bank and in two of the incidents, he wore
11:02 am
a very unusual outfit. he was actually wearing a white, full-length tivek jump suit. the fbi is trying to figure out whether the same man is responsible for all three crimes. investigators focus on the vacant building next door to the m&t bank. with the door open, you can see the hole that the would-be robber cut through the brick wall. he accessed the bank's atm room, but that's when the alarm went off and the suspect ran away without any money. >> it sounds like something out of a mystery novel or something like that. >> the whole thing was caught by the bank's security camera. the would-be robber is seen entering wearing a white tyvek jump suit, it is an unusual get up, but police have seen it before. just last friday, someone broke into the bank of america in woodley park. that suspect was also wearing a suit, gloves and a mask and he cut through the wall of an adjacent building to make entry. then there's the incident at that same bank of america a year
11:03 am
ago. once again, the would-be robber cut through the wall, but he ran away without getting any money. >> so he didn't get anything? no, he's wasting his time now. he needs to come up with a new plan. >> and as you can see, the police investigators, they have some pretty good pictures of the suspect here from those surveillance cameras inside of the banks. they're hoping that someone will recognize the person in those pictures and call and give them the break that they need. reporting live in georgetown, megan mcgrath, news 4. >> thank you, megan. new this morning, police are investigating what caused a truck to hit a house in northwest d.c. it happened around 8:00 this morning on the 3300 block of p. street. the driver of a pickup truck lost control and ran into the steps of a row home. no injuries have been reported and no one was inside the home at the time. well, in just about three hours, the man accused of shooting a security guard at the family research council is due
11:04 am
in court. a grand jury indicted 28-year-old floyd corkins for last week's shooting. the conservative group recently supported the president of chic-fil-a, who staunchly opposes same-sex marriage. in addition to a weapon and ammunition, police say corkin also had 15 chic-fil-a sandwiches with him. well, a man is fighting for his life after being shot in the head in northeast washington. it happened just after 10:00 last night on the 1000 block of rhode island avenue, that's not far from the rhode island metro station. police arrived to find the man unconscious and he was taken to a local hospital in grave condition. rhode island avenue was also shut down for several hours while police investigated. so far, no word on any suspects. three people are recovering right now after an early morning apartment fire in southeast d.c. crews responded around 4:45 this morning to a three-story apartment building in the 1300 block of alabama avenue. they had to use ladders to
11:05 am
rescue people from their balconies. two kids and an a adult were taken to the hospital, but they are all expected to be fine. firefighters say the fire started in a kitchen on the second floor. and right now, tropical storm isaac is beginning to strengthen as it moves towards the u.s. coast. winds are now up to 60 miles per hour and isaac's effects could be felt in florida as soon as sunday. today, there are fears it could cause major damage in haiti. nearly 400,000 haitians still live in tents and temporary shelters from that 2010 deadly earthquake. the fear is that heavy rains could cause flooding and mudslides, which have had deadly impacts in the past. well, isaac's path is shifting slightly west this morning, meaning tampa and the republican national convention may not take a direct hit. but organizers are still preparing for the worst. mitt romney is trying not to let the storm rain on his parade, nbc's clare has more on the preparations.
11:06 am
>> reporter: the curtain will rise for the republican national convention in tampa, florida, monday. rnc organizers say not even the threat of a hurricane will stop mitt romney from being nominated next week. meanwhile, a new cbs/"new york times" poll in florida a key battleground state shows the campaign is getting tighter. president obama's lead has been sliced to just three points. >> obviously, rather be slightly ahead than slightly behind. but too close to call race at this point. >> paul ryan has helped mitt romney narrow the lead. known as a tough, fiscal conservative, he continues pushing for financial balance and avoiding the fiscal cliff under a republican administration. >> mitt romney is saying we'll deal with this right away, prevent this cliff, this massive tax increase, these devastating defense cuts from taking place. >> right away. >> right away yes, right away. >> romney revealed the plan in new mexico yesterday promising energy independence by 2020.
11:07 am
he will achieve this goal with a focus on oil and gas production over alternative forms of energy. >> the wind subsidies will continue for the next ten years. but i do believe that at some point an industry has to stand on its own and be competitive. >> reporter: the white house was quick to slam back that romney's plan would take the country backwards. >> this is a narrow view and a dangerous view, if you think about how important energy security is and production of energy is to our national security interest. >> but romney is touting that his energy plan will create 3 million new jobs. he'll talk more about that and the economy when he teams up, again, with ryan on the campaign trail heading into the weekend. they will be in michigan later this morning and in ohio on saturday. nbc news, washington. and don't forget, we'll have complete coverage of the republican national convention, aaron gilchrist from tampa,
