right now it appears that a grudge between former co-workers might have caused all of this. witnesses describe mass chaos, people running, diving for cover as shots rang out in one of the busiest parts of mid-manhattan. >> i walked into the billing, when i heard five gunshots. >> reporter: police say a gunman confnted a former co-worker outside the street, shot him three times and walked calmly from the area as the man lay dying on the street. witnesses described the scene. >> i ran into the boardroom, i opened the window of the ninth floor. pretty scary sight. >> reporter: a construction worker followed johnson and alerted police. >> as the two officers approached johnson, he pulled his semiautomatic pistols from his bag and fired on the officers, who returned fire, killing him. an additional nine individuals were either wounded or grazed

during the exchange. >> two women, seven men were hit by gunfire. the mayor says it' possible they were shot by police as they tried to stop johnson. johnson was fired last year, but had an ongoing feud with a former colleague, which ended in today's killing. >> it's a terrible thing. our first thoughts are for the murder victim, and then prayers -- thank god nobody else was seriously injured and that they will all recover. once again, there's an awful lot of guns out there. >> reporter: bloomberg tows new york as the country's biggest safe city. mayor bloomberg expects all nine bystanders to make full recoveries. meanwhile, police continue to probe the relationship between johnson and his former co-worker to figure out why it ended in violence. now back to you. this just into our newsroom the man accused of shooting a

security officer is competent to stand trial. a judge handed down that ruling within the past couple of hours. 28-year-old floyd lee corkins is accused of shooting leo johnson last week. he faces assault and weapons charges that carry the possibility of decades in prison. news4's jackie bensen was in the courtroom today. she'll tell us what she saw tonight on "news4 at 5." we also learned that security guard is out of the hospital. he released a statement today. it says -- i am thankfully now out of the hospital. my condition appears to improve, though it appears another surgery will be needed. i want to thank everyone for the support and prayer. a thief has broken into a third bank in d.c., his latest targets, the m & t bank in georgetown. as meg been mcgrath reports, police are concerned he's up to his old tricks.

>> reporter: investigators focus on the vacant building. with the door open, you did see the hole the would-be robber cut through the brick wall. he ultimately accessed the atm room. that's when the alarm ran out and the suspect ran away without any money. >> it sounds like something out of a mystery vel. >> reporter: the whole thing was caught by the bank's security camera. the would-be robber is seen entering wearing a jumpsuit, an unusual getup, but police have seen it before. just last friday, someone broke into the bank of america in woodley park. he cut through the wallen an adjacenta adjacentant, and then there's the incident at the same bank the america a year ago. once again the would would-be robber cut through the wall. >> he didn't get anything? he's wasting his time now. he needs to come up with a new plan.

officials are already mapping out their plan. >> we're making sure that all of our supplies and equipment are in place and functional so that should the storm come closer, we're able to ramp up and be ready. >> reporter: still days away, florida is already feeling the effects of the system. gas prices jumped overnight deto fears the storm will slow shipping and shut down refineries in the gulf. crews have installed rain shields in tampa where there's growing concern isaac could be an unwelcomed guest as 65,000 show up for the republican national convention next week. >> in terms of an actual evacuation of the city of tampa, that is my call. >> a call mayor bob buckhorn hopes he never will have to make. the current forecast shows tampa will get a glancing blow, but experts understandhat path can change quickly. hopefully we won't have to do anything more, but we're ready if we have to be. >> reporter: prayers and preparation echoed by hundreds of thousands watching eye sake

along the gulf coast. now, landfall is still a few days away, but that's an important time according to emergency officials to review evacuation plans. live in ft. myers, i'm jay gray, richard, barbara, back to you now. let's get the latest on isaac's tram. kim martucci is in storm center 4. hi, kim. >> hi, guys, we've been tracking this. still severity date away from entering the gulf. the outer bands approaching h hispanio hispaniola. and of course, cuba will be in its path as well. the winds are 60 miles an hour. this still keeps it a tropical storm, not a hurricane. to become a hurricane you have to have winds of 74 miles an hour, and it's moving to the northwest at 14 miles an hour. here's the latest track from the hurricane center. you can see the timeline. it brushes it looks like key west and the florida keys, as we

approach monday, and keeping it in the gulf of mexico, the path, bringing it join shore in the western florida panhandle by wednesday 7:00 in the morning with winds of 80 miles an hour. locally we have pretty pleasant conditions outside and a handful of showers are popping up. i'm tracking them for you and what you can expect this weekend, you might want the umbrella on standby. back to you. three days before the republican national convention begins in tampa, tropical storm isaac is less of a threat, but mitt romney kicked up a political storm today, when he revived the birther conspiracy. it's a theory he has rejected in the past. steve handelsman reports. >> his name is mitt romney, and his's going to be the next president of the united states of america. >> the running mates came together to campaign in michigan. where they trail by four to six points, but ann and mitt are

yeah, i know, it's going to be one of those weekends where we go, o. man? and i have to tell you about some rain probably affecting us. we'll show you what's going on out there. we have the clouds kind of thickening up, even a handful of showers have -- the winds are at 6 miles an hour, and we'll have a pretty mild evening, kind of acting like a blanket outside. so, hmm, let me just take a look at why my clicker doesn't seem to be working. as i mentioned, the 80s are in town, no 90s, that's pretty good news. oh, that's not what i wanted to do. hold on, guys. bear with me one second, because i don't want to show you the seven-day yet. here we go. so we have temperatures well into the 80s, east winters, and

we're looking forward to having some showers come our way, as we think about later tonight and probably tomorrow morning. it's 88 in frederick, 83 in fredericksburg, and as we look at our fast forecast, the weekend showers start as early as tomorrow morning. i think a lot of us will be in the 70s as we plan for highs tomorrow. one area seeing a heavy dwroun pour, you folks in washington county, you have a heavy downpour, and they're spotty, just on the wrest side of frederick. eye sake is still spinning down there, and will be going across cuba, and it looks like it will stay in the gulf of mexico and taking a swipe at the western florida panhandle come early wednesday next week, so we still have several days for this path to change, but just like yesterday, the official path is keeping it to the west of the florida peninsula, and not hitting tampa directly. that's how things are looking for the time being. our headache around here is this
