national convention has been canceled for monday. why and what the new plan is? >> good evening. we begin with a soaker. some parts of our area seeing close to a foot of rain. and then there was this. a waterspout touching down on the potomac, cobb island, southern maryland. people taking video and pictures. meteorologist doug? busy night for you? >> tomorrow morning. starting to calm down. out there. take a look at this. picking up over 3.3 inches in baltimore baltimore 2.2 in annapolis. some on the eastern shore, 6 to 10 inches of rain today. that's more rain than parts of florida saw from tropical storm isaac. officially at the airport. under a third of an inch.

.po .6 inch. the rain mostly gone. most of it through southern maryland. along the chesapeake t things starting to calm down a little bit. not a whole lot out there. a few showers. not done with the shower activity yet around our region. they're not done to the south either. look at this a rain, portions of central florida, miami and here is the storm. this is tropical storm isaac making its way to the north/west. latest advisory. 65 mile an hour wind. west/northwest. 14 miles an hour. the new track takes it directly over new orleans. we'll talk about that, talk about the strength of the storm and let you know what to expect over the next couple days. first day of school for many coming up. >> big test for the new orleans levees. florida continuing to be pelted by rain, heavy wind tonight. isaac makes its way towards the gulf coast. hurricane warning issued from louisiana to the florida panhandle. governors in florida, alabama and mississippi allmergency ton.

in louisiana, officials ordered mandatory evacuations. nbc's jay gray has more on when isaac is expected to make landfall. >> we are getting wind. no rain to speak of. the conditions here and across the gulf are expected to change dramatically in the next 24 hours. night fall, isaac continues to intensify in the gulf. wind and rain thrashing florida for much of the day. >> we are very vulnerable. about 2 feet above sea level. >> reporter: thousand without power. emergency officials ordered mandatory evacuations in several coastal communities. to this point, florida has seen a glancing blow. >> a large area at risk here. >> reporter: isaac is a massive storm with wind stretching more than 350 miles. and as the forecast path of the storm shifts, so does the focus here. governors have declared states

of emergency in florida, alabama, mississippi, and louisiana. where evacuations have already started in the parish there. >> important to be on high alert. >> in the center of the strike zone, new orleans and south louisiana could see the worst on wednesday. seven years to the day after hurricane katrina. >> i know anxiety level is high. the storm is some what uncertain. out of abundance of caution we have begin to take these precautions. we should be prepared for anything that must come in our way. >> reporter: preparations that like sandbags now stretch across the gulf coast. hundreds of thousands, stocking up, boarding up and bracing for impact. while offshore, oil come pans have pulled crews from their rigs. the storm threatening to shut down as much as 90% of production in the gulf. >> today and tomorrow, are the preparation times on northern gulf coast. >> as isaac continues to gather momentum and the attention of so

standing a lot of the virginia delegation went to the convention welcome party at tropicana field, tampa bay host committee, predicting 10,000, 15,000 invited guests would show up there. a party for sure. live music. marching band. sampling of food. the chance to put the heart of tampa on display. now the bizness usiness of the nominating convention next. i have to tell you a lot of folks are waiting to see what is going to happen in terms of planned events tomorrow. we'll see the convention gavelled into session around 2:00. then immediately go into recess. 10 minutes. should take all the speakers from monday, are now being moved to wednesday. including ann romney, the, the presumptive nominee's wife. of course, chris christie who will give the keynote speech during this convention. a lot of folks are having speeches shortened, eliminated to fit into the rest of the week. virginia governor bob mcdonald will speak on tuesday as was planned virginia has figured

on the convention and isaac's track. starting tomorrow morning at 4:30. while the gop rallies in florida, president obama will be in virginia. the president will speak at a campaign event in charlottesville this wednesday. he will not however be at the university of virginia. the school declined a request by his campaign to speak on campus. uva officials didn't want to cancel class on the second day of classes or-to pay for security. a child had to be air lifted to the hospital tonight in montgomery county after a serious car crash there. happened onmiddlebrooke road and 270, the car slammed into the pole. the driver taken to the hospital. the child has life threatening injuries. police closed the section of middle brooke more than three hours but now reopened. we are learning new details about the ma in who shot and killed a former co-worker in front of the empire state building friday. fines for traffic cameras in the district could be going down. a task force will meet this week to look at whether the fines are reducing violations. right now penalty for running a red light is $150. getting caught in a speed camera can cost you $250. the task force is being led by council members. mary jay and tommy wells could be several months before a decision.
