downgraded to a tropical storm, but still a sizable storm, this is just one of the reasons why you can never unity estimate a category 1 storm. this thing is huge. take a loot at it on radar. this system for the most part is stalled, and of course deluging the area with the wind-driven rain, and the 18 to 16 foot storm surge. you can see where the eye is, to the southwest of new orleans, the system moving very slowly off to the west and southwest. there's another big band the rain right now around biloxi. that will be rotating through spots like slidell and new orleans as the sim makes its way to the west and northwest very slowly. >> look at the rainfall totals. river ridge, louisiana over 7

inches, over 8 inches in belle chasse, and still, folks, there's more to come. this system is barely moving, only at 6:00 miles per hour to the west and northwest. there will be a lot more rain. this system will be almost by sitting still for the next 24 to 36 hours, making very slow progress through the rest of louisiana. there's the track, and where it's expected to go for thursday and friday. it will make its way northward, then to the north and east. finally areas like missouri and illinois, those drought stricken areas will finally get some rain. i think what we'll see around here are some of those tropical showers by the time we get to the end of the weekend. take a leetch they're expecting down in new orleans, you saw the rainfall they picked up already, close to 10, even 12 inches of rain. there will be some locations that pick up to two feet of rainfall.

had just fueled up with the driver who died in this crash there at that fuel depot here on fairfax county parkway. >> you know, you see a guy ten minutes ago, next thing you know, he's gone. kind of crazy. >> reporter: just after 2:00 there was an explosion. virginia state police say a fuel carrier was heading from fairfax county parkway onto i-95 northbound when it lost control and overturned. >> a spark was somehow ignited causing the truck to cash on fire. >> reporter: the driver was pronounced dead on the scene. al witt says he had just seen the driver at this gas depot, less than a mile from the crash. >> he was up until the rack together loading, so, um, just kind of hits close to home. you just see a guy. next thing you know he's not here no more. >> reporter: several lanes were crashed as police investigated, causing backups for miles in

we have been tracking isaac from all angles, including our own doug kammerer, and he couldn't find a place to eat. everything was closed down. everybody was stuffed in there. he said the winds were starting to pick up. >> the rain radar shows rain everybody where, but it's not raining where you are, doug. >> reporter: hey, guys, we are seeing the rain. the winds continue. we're in the same location we were yesterday. we had to switch vantage points. today that wind is coming out of

society. take a look at this ahning right here by the steamer boat. very big ahning. right here we're looking at winds about 30 to 40 miles an hour with highest gusts. we're going to continue to see this as the eye continues to move off to the west. right in the city of new orleans, we're going to continue to watch these winds through the rest of the night. we'll continue to watch the rain right on through the day tomorrow and probably into the day friday, too. some areas have already seen upwards of 6 to 10 inches the rain. we'll be back in a couple minutes. >> let me ask you about how many hours more of rain and wind do you anticipate there in new orleans?

i expect the heavy stuff. that radar is clearly defined as showing we're in for at least another 6 to 12 hours of heavy rain. as the storm moving up, we'll still see that feed. i think we're going to be looking at the potential for heavy rain, not only through the next 24 hours, but maybe the next 36 to 48 hours. we've seen tropical storm force winds, at least gusts for over 12 to 15 hours right now at the airport. this will continue to go. stay safe down there. doug kammerer live in new orleans, we'll be checking back with him again at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight.

a four-day thriller of a celebration opens tonight in michael jackn's home down of gary, indiana. the late sicker would have been 54 years old today. the city plans a candlelight tribute starting at 9:00 tonight on jackson street. that kicks off the festivities, which will continue through saturday. jackson's children are expected to attend some of tomorrow's events. saturday night live is about to come out of the summer hiatus. it's been a long summer. nbc has just announced the host of the season premiere. >> it's seth mcfarlane, the multitalented writer and voice actor who created "family guy." he also recently directed his first feature film "ted" and furnished the voice for the title character, that raunchy teddy bear. doldrums, if you will. it's just kind of meandering down there. it's not until it gets further north, northern louisiana, areas of arkansas, where the upper-level winds will take it to the north and midwest, and eventually east. >> we've got a few clouds across the area. a very bright and lovely today. our winds light out of the nieve. check out the temperatures. we have 82 at patuxent river. look at that, satellite and radar, a clear sky. right on down into roanoke and areas around richmond, you can see the slice there, that's the clouds, and some of the moisture, some of those moisture bands, the tropical moisture, some of that is from isaac, but close are inspection, you can

see again just how huge this storm system is and why it's going to be as it makes its way very slow, why it will be producing a lot more rain. there's new orleans, there's reserve, heaviest rain to the north and west. some of the max winds we have seen over the last 24 hours, shell beach, 76-mile-per-hour wind gusts. and then it's in the mid 60s to upper 50s, just south of areas of baton rouge. that moisture again, to the north and then eventually to the east, will get tropical showers on sunday and monday. that's not carved into stone. could be early sunday, could be late sunday. for us, we will see that sunshine across our area for thursday. and temperatures will be warming up at the end of the week.

in the middle of the storm right now, isaac hammering the gulf coast at this hour, the situation is so serious, people are being rescued, and a levee might have to be breached on purpose to relieve the pressure. welcome back, everybody. a lot of news to get to. there is the latest on tropical storm isaac. heavy rains and winds are still pounding new orleans and parts of alabama and mississippi. plaque machines parish is under several feet of water. let's go back to chief meteorology it's doug kammerer. we can hear the wind and rain now, doug. >> right now, right here along

the mississippi, right along the riverfront, winds gusting to about 40, maybe 50 miles per hour officially at the airport, as of this last hour. the rain continues to be very, very heavy, some location already picking up around 6 to 10 inches of rain. so we're going to be watching the scenario play out all across the area. we took a bit of a tour earlier. let's look at the radar. this storm is just, and i do mean just to the west of new orleans by about 40 miles, you can clearly see the eye right there, the eye contracting just a bit, much smaller than over the open waters. right before it got to the coastline. the strongest wind gusts i've seen recorded was 101 miles an hour down to the south. that storm continue toss bring in these bands of very heavy rain and wind. it will continue to do that not

only through the night, but also through the day tomorrow. we took a tour, as i showed you earlier, we got in the car, went off toward the east, out towards the eastern portions of new orleans, dlug out there toward the lower ninth ward a bit earlier, which is faring much better this time around, you've got to tell you, but a ton of trees down, a ton of power lines down and obviously water in the roadways. this is a very serious situation. on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the worst, this is probably a 5 or 6 for them, with catrkatrina obviously being a 10. this one they will weather, but this the new here is the rain they will see. there's been a lot of cave-ins, and a lot of people have had to be rescued. we're going to continue to be in the thick of isaac for at least the next 12 to 24 hours with the

you're looking at a view of isaac from the international space station. you can see just how wide the bands reach. at the time that this picture was taken this afternoon, the storm was about the size of the state of texas. at times winds extended out to about 175 miles from the center. isaac is now a tropical storm, but it remains a threat, and veronica has been talking about this all asp. it's so persistent. >> with a storm system that big, you don't get a break, and with the fact that it's moving so slow, less than 10 miles per hour, they've got winds sustained at 70 miles per hour,

so they'll be getting gusts higher than that for much of the evening overnight period, right into tomorrow morning. there it is, that's the location, again just to the west of new orleans. its track will continue to make its way northwestward, and then vemplgually tack a turn to the north. that's when it gets to northern louisiana, it will getting picked up by the stronger winds to help carry it into areas around arkansas, up into missouri, illinois, eventually indiana, ohio, eventually by sunday, monday, toward areas of the mid-atlantic. take a look here, this is the amount of rain they're expecting, louisiana up into arkansas, between 12 and 20 inches of rain. then the storm system will start to break up. as the system heads to the north, we're not going to see those types of rains make their way northward. we've got another storm to talk about, this one tropical storm

police in los angeles are investigating two of their own officers after an arrest was critics say unnecessarily rough. a nurse was pulled over for using her cell phone while driving. >> reporter: when lapd officers arrested michelle jordan, it was captured by security camera, the video, witness and police statement show her taken to the ground, not once, but twice. >> the first part i believe they had a right to arrest her for resisting, but the second part was overboard. >> last tuesday the 21st majoritien was pulled over for using her cell phone. >> after arguing for a little while, the lady got out of the car and there was still some more arguing going on.
