with more on what the conditions are. >> reporter: i've heard the latest number up to 700,000, which puts it into perspective, we're talking 700,000 people without power around portions of louisiana, and then portions of mississippi. remember our derecho. we had double that amount of people without power, 1.5 million people without power. that's how much power that storm had. this storm, still amazingly strong storm. here we were yesterday in a very similar location talking about the winds of this storm. we have now been dealing with this for over 24 hours. i think we had another 12 for 24 hours of wind, maybe another 24 to 36 hours of some heavy rain. take a look at the radar picture right now. you can see where the storm is right now the center of isaac still off to the west by about 50 miles. 50 miles off to the west. we're still very close to that inner core where some of the

stronger winds are. winds officially reported at the airport of 54 miles an hour as of last hour, so we're going to continue to see the heavy winds through the rest of the night tonight. now we took a bit of a tour. we got up early this morning, we heard about some damage just off to the south and east of new orleans, so we drove about 15 miles outside the city, actually about ten miles outside the city. take a look at what we saw. >> our tour took us just east of new orleans. the streets were littered with downed trees, making some roads completely impassable. downed wires also caused huge has ards. just to the south, a scene reminiscent of katrina, levees were overtopped in braithwaite. about 75 people had to be rescued by 1:00 my uncle called and said the wall is coming over

the levee. i was like, all right, i wore her up, walked outside, maybe three, four foot of water, come back inside. got me a great, go back out, it was almost to the window already. >> reporter: and we talked with james. james was able to get out of his house. fortunately he had a boat. their boat was already afloat. they got their neighbors out of the attic, and then they were able to make it over to the levee, and that's where the national guard was able to rescue them. that was some of the worst damage here as i had reminiscent of katrina. we were in the lower ninth ward earlier today. that area faring much better, trees down, power lines down, many areas without power, but the levees are holding. they are going to hold. no problem there, but we still

mate. they appeared at a brunch this morning in tampa, attended mostly by women. that's a group mitt romney is courting very heart these days. mrs. ryan called ann romney an inspiration for millions, and said it was an honor for her and her husband to be on the romney team. paul ryan will give the keynote tonight, a tea party favorite who has to start appealing very much to the broader party and to some of those swing voters who will be watching tonight as well. julie carey spent time looking at the impact paul ryan is having on delegates. >> paul ryan, of course has given many speeches as chairman of the house budget committee, but no doubt tonight he gives the most important speech to date of his career. here's a look earlier as paul ryan arrived at the forum, took the stage to kind of get familiar with the surroundings,

day weekend. it would be probably on labor day. star the rain is concerned. the rain is still going, the wind is still going, too, about three different trees have fallen because of the storm. but a lot of the trees are still up. even 70 miles an hour earlier this morning, the winds here peaked at about 3:00 that's when those winds peaked here. i believe in new orleans it was at 3:54 in the morning. over the last 24 hours, it was just sitting here and sitting here, moving very, very slowly off to the west. it is finally moving away from new orleans. it's now 60 miles to the west. once again, we're watching this storm, and it will continue to bring very heavy rain. the wind will continue to subside.

d.c. already snaps photos of drivers going over the speed limit or running red lights. the city could become the one of the first places in the country to use cameras at stop signs. that's one proposed change. another could provide a big break for drivers. >> speed cameras are showing up all around town. most everyone is aware of red light cameras, but that's just the beginning. a d.c. council task force is reviewing city plans to extend automated cameras and fines to several more circumstances that would raise a total of $80 million a year in fines -- simp don't block the stop signs are
