and this gentleman can put his mind to it and accomplish many good things in the prison system, and come out of it a much better person. thank you all. he says the jury got it right. the judge just shaved off three years off the jury's recommendation, given george huguely the former lacrosse player at uva 23 years. >> also he said that huguely will be out before he turns 40, so he said he will still be a young man when he's out of prison. also, as he said, there is much
5:01 pm
that he can accomplish wle in the prison system for the next decade or so, serving his time, that this is not a total waste. let's go back to charlottesville. another person is coming out. >> talking about his case and talking about everything under the sun. we've been extraordinarily proud to represent him and delighted to have gotten to know his wonderful family who you heard from in court today. my partner and i are trial attorneys, in and out of the this court all the time. this is what we do for a living, and we fundamentally believe in the jury system and in our courts, but we fundamentally disagree that the conviction in this kay for second-degree murder was at all appropriate and we bakley disagree with the sentence that was imposed today.
5:02 pm
we think that george was convicted of a crime inconsistent with the facts and he received a penalty inconsistent with what the evidence would require. mr. huguely will appeal these convictions. he will appeal his sentence. our system provides that a single pson or a single group of people are not the final arbiters. we are confidence that a mature and careful considering will result in the reversal of these convictions and the correct outcome in this case will eventually be released. our client mr. huguely remains optimistic, and remains hopeful that a thorough review will lead to the just outcome that he haus sought from the beginning. thank you. >> that was rhonda quagliana, a
5:03 pm
defense attorney for huguely, saying they'll appeal not only the conviction, but the sentencing. he was just sentenced to 23 years in prison for the death of yardley love in a former -- a lacrosse player at uva. and of course we're going to stay in touch with jackie bensen, who is live there in charlottesville and see if the families of either yardley love or george huguely are going to step out with reaction as well. so stay with us on "news4 at 5" for the latest on that. but also in news tonight, millions will be hearing mitt romney accept the republican nomination. news4's aaron gilchrist joins us with a look at the big night for republicans and for mr. romney. aaron? >> reporter: it is that, indeed, wendy it is make or break time for mr. romney. millions will be watching, trying to make a decision.
5:04 pm
the republican nominee did a walk-through just a little while ago at the forum in tampa, a new stage was actually built for him right in front of the one everybody else is using and about a foot lower. his task tonight is huge, to convince viers to show he would be a stronger leader than president obama, and to make america more comfortable. a lot of people have said he comes across a bit stiff to some people. his running mate was tasked with doing some of the dirty work. he did rip into president obama, calling him a failed leader who won't accept responsibility. he also electrified the crowd last night, telling his story, tried to prime the republican base to hear mitt romney's plans. he reaped out to swing voters. i've got to tell you, the delegates here seemed to love it.
5:05 pm
>> electric re filling. paul ryan gave a great speech. people were energized by what he had to say. >> he's a very serious policy maker. he laid out a plan for america that will help turn things around. that's what i like the most. >> reporter: now, at the same time, the pundits and fact checkers called the speech long on false claims and short on specific plans, but again that is going to be the task of mitt romney tonight, to late out those specific plans. topobring in julie carey, who spent time on gaining some inside information. >> we were lucky enough to be with the delegation this morning when they had a special preview coming from someone very close to him, the middle of his five sons, josh romney. romney told the group that, first and foremost, his father wants to inspire confidence that he knows exactly what to do to turn around the economy. he says he will also criticize president obama tonight for
5:06 pm
undermining the american dreams. he also says his fatr has been very eager for this opportunity. >> this is a big night for him. he's excited about the opportunity to allow the american people to see what he stands for, what he believes, in an unfiltered way. so many other chances people have had to see them is either filtered by the media or negative campaigning, so this is a chance to introduce himself in a way that he controls. >> reporter: interesting to talk to him, and we'll have more from josh romney on "news4 at 6." you may not have been ability to see that, but some of the delegates have special preparations tonight for themselves, in the way they dress. i can't really describe it, so we'll just show it to you. she's front and center, with the michigan delegation, so judy hunter made sure she would be seen on tv. >> bling is always good at these conventions. i have ahn aunt in connecticut who watches c-span, and i was on it, and she was very happy.
5:07 pm
>> reporter: elaborately decorated hat seems to be the preferred way to draw attention. this leaves little down. the texas delegation went with the uniform look, a cowboy hat on every head. in the west virginia section, miners' hats set the tone. >> coal mining is -- that's our industry, that's our lifeblood. >> the montana delegation sports matching denim vests. flashia clothes can also do the trick. the kansas lawmaker loaned this spangled vest to her constituent. >> she said i want you to wear this because i won't be there. >> women more than men seem to be caught up in the eye-catching craze, but you don't see these argyle pants every day, and this wisconsin. >> navy veteran, that's for me, i spent 24 yours in the navy. then on the bam, it says army mom, because my son is on active duty in the army.
5:08 pm
>> reporter: seeing more than anything else here, though, every variety of red dress. and here's one more red dress. i wore this, though, to blend in. we will be talking to delegates and we'll have reaction at 11ic. >> you don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. julie, thank you for that. and of course things kick off this evening as 7:30, when the session will start. mitt romney expected to speak around 10:30 this evening. back to you guys. >> thank you so much. let's return to our breaking topstory. lacrosse player george huguely was sentenced for the murder of his girlfriend yardley love to 23 years. jackie bensen has the latest. >> well, you'll remember that the jury's recommended sentence in this case was 26 years. the judge after hearing more than three hours of sentencing testimony, sentenced george
5:09 pm
huguely to 23 years in prison, 23 years, 23 for second-degree murder, one years for grand larceny. you'll remember he was found guilty of stealing the computer of the victim yardley love. but it would be served conservely at the same time, so it will be a total of 23 years. in court prosecutor david chapman described this case by saying this issue isn't about too much alcohol, but about too much violence. right before the judge imposed the sentence, he was given an opportunity to speak. he rose in court. it is the first time that many of us have heard him speak. he said, quote, mrs. love and electr lexie, i'm so sorry for your loss, i hope you find peace. he went on to say i want to thank my family and friends for all their support.
5:10 pm
now, it was somewhat unusual in this case for the judge to deviate from the jury's recommendation of 26 years. 23 years is still a very significant sentence, at the high end of the recommendations for the crime for which mr. huguely was convicted, and there will be a term, we understand of supervised probation after that, where he will have to undergo alcohol and drug counseling, various other things. he fame left the courthouse a short time ago. they were obviously distraught, obviously very upset, and then we heard prosecutor rhonda qualian, and she talked about the fact that the defense does plan to sgloor thank you, we are going to continue following breaking news, where the aftermath is threatening lives. a dam tested by isaac's heavy

rains is ready to burst. about 50,000 people are in its path. evacuations are under way. in the city of slidell, there is still the threat of flash flooding, as national guard troops continue rescue efforts. meteorologist reynolds wolf joins us from slidell, where some businesses just reopened last week after katrina 7 years ago. >> reporter: i'm coming to you from slidell, louisiana, founded back in the 1880s, known as a railroad town, but today, the main feature you have in the town is not the railroad track, but rather the water on both sides. the main mode of transportation, you see right there, mostly row boats, a few people way back in the background walking through with the galoshes, also here comes another boat in with some people perhaps being evacuated. they had 40 people evacuated last night, not just people, but
5:12 pm
also pets. today over 50 evacuees. what makes this situation pretty unusual is usually when there is flooding here and there's been flooding here long before the louisiana purchase. they've had all kinds of issues on this side. however, on this case, as isaac came through, waters went over and around a pump station which flooded old towne. you had some businesses that have just reopened just within the last seven days. they've just reopened right after katrina came through 7 years ago to the day. pretty ironic. what a mess remains. we're just getting started here on "news4 at 5." we continue to following the breaking news, the 23-year prison sentence for george huguely. sgloop and year than a year after devastating floods,

5:14 pm
in congress, ryan voted to ban all federal funding for planned parenthood and allow employers to deny women access to cancer screenings and birth control. and both romney and ryan backed proposals to outlaw abortion even in cases of rape and incest. for women... for president... the choice is ours. i'm barack obama, and i approve this message. for women... for president... the choice is ours. these days, hey, girls! nobody has time to get sick. mom, i don't feel good. but minute clinic makes it easy to get well. our nurse practitioners can diagnose and write prescriptions for everything from strep throat to sinus infections, with no appointment necessary, so you can feel better in no time. minute clinic -- the walk-in clinic at cvs/pharmacy, where you'll get $10 off sports physicals. only for a limited time. find a clinic near you at minuteclinic.com.
