mean a lot of recovery work. >> absolutely. for the first time today, good news, no rain at all, but patches of night. this is what the city desperately needs to shine light on what isaac left behind and what it will take to recover. the storm may be gone, but evidence is still scattered across the gulf coast. >> we are now fully in the cleanup and recoveries phase of the storm in the city of new orleans the bell has not rung on this storm, and it won't ring until we're finished. >> reporter: and just like the slow-moving storm, the cleanup is going to take some sometime. after two straight days of driving rains, floodwaters still fill some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods. >> we'll continue to see flooding challenges, because we do have the tide levels in the rivers and buy use yews and quite frankly the water still

continues to accumulate from the rain. >> power crews are just beginning work to get a million customers online. for survivors, recovery has become an all too familiar thing. >> i've been through it. you just pick up the pieces and move on. >> reporter: this afternoon, a day after accepting his party's nomination, republican presidential hopeful mitt romney toured the devastation. president obama will visit on monday, though the focus of both trips is far from political. >> we're not talking politics. that's not the right time to do that. we are solely focused on the hurricanes and recovery efforts. >> reporter: and there are early signs that recovery is on the way. >> it will be back. it may take a week or two, but it is what it is. it's new orleans. >> reporter: though the task here is big, and will be anything but easy. okay. so the curfew has been lifted,

big storm unwinding. there's been one to five-inch rain totals. the ohio valley to the mid-atlantic states, we're talking about sunday, monday, perhaps even this range lingers. so some tropical showers for us. if you have plan tess beam, i think we'll be just fine. right now saturday is looking fairly dry, with the rain starting in the western counties first, so at the beach, best chance will be on monday, but cooling off with clouds move in. a look at our local water with a seven-day forecast. by the way, if you go out this evening, pus on the bug sprays. the mosquitos are really biting this evening. presidential politics now, the republican national convention all wrapped up, the democrats getting ready to celebrate next week. the time warner arena is almost ready. the today the candidates were on the move.

and so is steve handlesman, who joins us from charlotte. steve? >> reporter: thanks. good evening from the cable box, that's what the folks here in charlotte, north carolina call this time warner cable arena, which next week will be the home of the democratic national convention. it's here that president obama gets his shot to try to fire up his base and win over undecided vote serious like the republicans did last week. before splitting up to campaign, mitt romney and paul ryan put a positive spin on their republican convention. >> coming out of tampa, we have given or fellow countrymen a very clear choice. >> you listen to the last guy running for president. he was unable to do it. >> reporter: in his soaring speech last night, romney did not lay out specifics. >> i have a plan to create 12 million new jobs.

his promise to end the iraq war two years ago today. >> you left iraq with honor, your mission complete. >> reporter: next week is the president's turn in a convention spotlight, the time warner arena, which is almost ready. this state, north carolina, and florida, are battle grounds on the race for the white house. these two plus the other swing states like virginia, both campaigns will be avidly checking the poll to try to get a measurement what kind of convention bounce romney got at the rnc. at the site of the dnc in charlotte, i'm steve handlesman for news4. thanks, steve. federal reserve chairman ben bernanke called the stagnation in the u.s. labor market a grave concern. bernanke spoke at the annual conference in jackson hole, wyoming today. he said the fed is ready to act to help boost the economy but

stopped short of giving any details. he highlighted recent purchases of u.s. bonds, which helped the u.s. economy to recover, but he cautioned the economy could suffer years of damage if the unemployment rate does not start to drop soon. new york stock exchange maintained the gain, the dow closed up more than 90 points. a club in prince george's county has been shut down, called club elite. it was closed today for violations of licensing and dance permits. police say last night a man was shot in the back while he was danci dancing. he is expected to survive. they haven't arrested anybody yet there was an assault and stabbing in the parking lot earlier this month. volunteer at a church in fairfax has been charged with sexual abuse. 23 years old james west was

arrested this morning. police say he was a youth group volunteer with the church, and he had been working in that capacity for several years of the he's been charged with the sexual assault of a 14-year-old member of that group. police tell us the teenager was assaulted twice. it is still a mess in crystal city after a broken main sent water shooting into the air for hours. this appeared just after rush hour this morning near south 12th street and long bridge drive. news4's melissa mollet has a progress report. is there progress to report? >> reporter: you know, it's a good progress report. the crews are still behind me. we're now nine hours into this one, wendy. they are digging down trying to fix this broken main. 9:00 a.m., water shooting up

like a geyser. >> my window actually overloose the corner, so i looked out and there was a big river. >> reporter: a big river. crews say it's a 12-inch main that broke. flowing into one parking garage and for hours gushing into the construction site where they're building east coast headquarters. the site had to be shut down as they pumpe the flooding water out. >> an apartment complex and four offices buildings had to be shut off. >> it was entirely closed, and the water pressure was basically zero. >> a block away as sparkles it was e -- parents asked to pick up their kids early. >> the water was out. the air conditioning is water cooled. that cut back on the air

amber was only 17 years old when she was killed. she was an honors student, murdered in her bed last week. >> today police canvassed the neighborhood. police are hoping to find

something that leads to a break in this case. >> reporter: cadets were brought to a wooded area to search for evidence, including a gun from the mysterious murder of amber stanley. about 10:30 p.m. last wednesday, a man kicked in the door where the 17-year-old, a top student at charles flowers high school, lived with her mother, older sister and foster sister. he went directly to amber's bedroom, shot her several times and left while the home's other occupants escaped. >> witnesses always notice the guy running with "bad guy" written on his forehead. we've been told this guy was not necessarily running. he may have been walking, fast-walking, he may have been thinking i'm not going to bring attention to myself and i'm going to walk through this neighborhood. >> reporter: not far away, they attended a memorial service held at prince george's county ballroom in orlando. she never got a chance to live

out her life. i saw her last tight at the audition. >> we went to the same school in the same program. we both wanted to be models, both in shows together. >> this is a good friend of my daughter. i look at her as my daughter as well. the funeral will be a private family service. jackie bensen, news4. it was 15 years old today that princess diana was killed in a car accident. today admirers from around the

world are paying tribute. it's a similar tribute at the crash site. diana was 36-year-old at the time. french police said the driver, who also died, had been drinking heavily, and he was speeding in an effort to get away from the paparazzi. a black-hawk helicopter indicated that something was wrong. three soldiers on board brought it down in a cornfield. no injuries. mechanics are inspecting the aircraft to see if it's safe to fly it back to base. the farmer just continued to harvest his crop. >> he's got work to do.

and kentucky to see some of those showers they are advancing, look at the heavy rain. that's what's still rapping around. with that low pressure area associated with isaac. at least the bigger rains are out of those areas, south of around arkansas and louisiana. we'll get to some of these rain showers as they make their way into our area. tomorrow will be the moisture from isaac and this cold front kind of squeezing on us, so a chance of showers, i think, a 30% chance, mainly west of blue ridge. i this i we'll have a fair amount of fine around the area tomorrow. sunday things will start to slip downhill, but gradually. the cold front coming from the north and moves out to the

south, so right now, for monday that's when the bulk of the rain will be -- and even then still not a washout. off the coast of africa, we've been watching two storms, it is one up here, kirk, that's a hurricane that won't bother us at all. it will make its tern to the northeast. a bigger storm to the south, this one is expected to make its way northward, and could be providing rain as early as next week. here's a look at your four-day forecast. 93 tomorrow, 84 for sunday, labor day 80 with a chance of showers, maybe even some thunderstorms. so not a terrible labor day weekend. just keep an eye on the sky. >> yes. a whole bunch of folks going down to the beach.

you usa. a large apartment fire last night was a close call for one firefighter trying to rescue a woman trapped in her apartment. we spoke to captain scott kilpatrick about this dangerous

rescue. >> reporter: he shinuns the hers label. a safety officer may show up to a fire scene in one of these or one of these, but he's still a firefighter. he's still got the gear and can still be called upon to save a life at a moment's notice. >> we heard a woman say, hey, it's hot up here, help me, help me, i'm upstairs. >> reporter: the fire started in a kitchen, and we quickly climbed a ladder. they could barely see and the woman could barely breathe. it was all he could do to use his radio. >> i'm with the rescue. she's alive. above the fire floor, region 2. >> i just told command i'm going to start sharing my air with her. i took the regulate or off and started sharing my air with her. it basically free flowing. >> reporter: between breaths, he said he talked to the woman, but

the apartment was about to reach a flash point. the carpet had start to do bubble from the heat. he was met by even more smoke and flames. >> so i closed it, said a quick prayer, got help me to get out of this. >> it was super-heated air and gases that rushed out of the apartment up into that stairwell. >> reporter: it drove those manning the hoses man. now they both needed rescue themselves. >> it was going really bad really quick. she was screaming, she was crying. she was telling me my feet are burning. i knew she was being hurt, and that really broke my heart. >> reporter: and the air was running out. >> i was sucking thick nasty hot black smoke. >> reporter: mer rack his will you then the other firefighters made it to them and got them out. they both were hospitalized, had taken in smoke, but came out

alive. president obama is on hi was back to washington now. at the marked the two-year anniversary of the end of combat operations in iraq. the visit was not an official campaign event. it was a reminder to voters that president obama is the commander in chief and kept his campaign promise to end it. half staff flags are flying in memory of neil armstrong. there were hundreds of people at the memorial service today. buzz aldrin and michael coppens who made the historic moon landing were there as well looping with other former astronauts. armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. he died on saturday from complications from art surgery. he was 82. a public memorial service will be held september 12 here in d.c. recovery from hurricane
