off the dnc. how she's making the case for her husband's second term. good-bye to a gentle giant. hollywood in shock today over the death of michael clarke duncan. and oh, deer. a family watches an unexpected guest come through the pet door. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. we begin with the weather today, folks. another round of rain. more flooding could be in the works. >> storm team 4 chief meteorologi meteorologist doug kammerer is track it all. >> over the next 24 hours i expect to see shower activity, localized rain. here's one thing going on. 88 degrees out there right now with wind out of the south-southwest at 20 miles per hour. look at that heat index. 95 degrees. a very warm and a very humid afternoon. talk about the temperatures.

then you add in the humidity. see those thunderstorms out there. storms into southern maryland, waldorf, prince george's county. back into the west through northern virginia also seeing shower activity. we're just getting started. once again we see a boundary back to the west here. a lot of showers and thunderstorms out ahead of the boundary. i think tomorrow will really be the day we're talking about heavy rain. we've got some out there right now in parts of the area. oxen hill along the beltway here, making your way through this area, shower activity through around 7:00. then we may see a little break by 11:00, temperatures around 78. waking up to a temperature of 72 degrees tomorrow. may start off a little on the dry side tomorrow. i don't think it's going to end that way. complete forecast coming up. today was the first day of school for thousands of kids across our region. fairfax county, two new schools opened up today to keep up with the county's growing demand. news 4's megan mcgrath spoke with excited students in lorton.

>> reporter: it's one of life's big transitions. the jump from elementary school to middle school. >> i'm super nervous. like, really, really nervous, but excited. because i got all the electives i wanted. all my friends are in my class, which is good. >> a little nervous. but excited. but just glad to be in this new school. >> reporter: it isn't just a new academic experience. south county middle itself is brand-new. one of two new schools in fairfax county this year. >> the biggest way it's going to make a difference for our students, there's a lot of room for them. when we were in the secondary school we were sharing a lot of the facilities. here are students have plenty of room to grow and explore. they have their own gym, auxiliary gym, our own cafeteria. >> their gym is really nice. they have a really nice gym. classrooms are nice. teachers are nice. everything. >> reporter: more than 180,000 kids returned to class this

morning. that's 3,000 more than last year. that trend is expected to continue over the next several years. superintendent jack dale says the county will have to build even more schools and find other creative ways to make room for students. >> we're probably having to open anywhere from one to two a year, would be my guess. but we only have a couple in the hopper right now, the two that we opened this year and expansions. some of it we can do with additions on schools. like i said, our big study this spring will be with fairfax high school. because it is overcrowded and we'll have to move kids out of fairfax high school into some neighbors high schools. >> this is also a significant year for school superintendent jack dale. that's because it's going to be his last with the fairfax county school system. he's going to be retiring at the end of june. in lorton, megan mcgrath, news 4 zbr students in arlington county also headed back to classes this

morning. many of them had to walk instead of take the bus. students who live within a mile of their elementary schools are now required to walk. middle and high schoolers have to walk if they live within a mile and a half. many parents are upset about this. they say the new rules are unsafe. >> i'm a big believer in walking to school. but .8 miles for a 4-year-old is ridiculous. they can't walk that far. they certainly can't walk that far if there's no planning beforehand. >> i'm challenged with compromising our children's safety to save money, frankly, because i don't know what else it could be. >> arlington county officials say enrollment has grown so much it's no longer possible to provide bus service to all the students. but they say safety is a top priority. parents who don't like the new walking plans have started an online petition and they're voicing their frustrations on facebook. prince george's county schools welcomed a new leader today. it's dr. alvin crawly's first day as interim superintendent.

he's a temporary superintendent for william hite. prince george's county is still looking for a permanent replacement. >> we are less than an hour now from the official start of the democratic national convention. it's the first lady's big night as she prepares to tell the nation why her husband should be re-elected to a second term. she and other testimonies will try to fi -- democrats will try to fire up voters. steve handelsman has more from charlotte. >> reporter: on his way to the convention, president obama went to norfolk, a huge rally. he did not mention today's bad economic news. factory activity down for a third straight month. construction spend iing way dow this july. >> on thursday night i will offer what i believe is a better path forward. a path that will create good jobs.

>> reporter: an obama goal in charlotte is to get key voter groups he needs refired up and ready to go. in last month's nbc news poll, just 52% of young voters, only 49% of latinos, said they're enthusiastic about the election. 20 points lower than last time. democrats hope michelle obama can help tonight in her prime time speech urging a big turnout. >> it's all responsibility at whatever age to exercise the rights that people before us fought so hard for us to have. >> so i'm going to be at home and i'm going to be watching it with our girls. and i am going to try not to let them see their daddy cry. because when michelle starts talking, i -- i start getting all misty. >> reporter: mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, continued his counter-dnc convention tour. >> after four years of getting

the mission that killed osama bin laden hit store shelves today. it was written under a pseudonym by a member of the s.e.a.l. team that took down bin laden. nbc's danielle lee explains why the book has the pentagon threatening legal action. >> reporter: after just hours on the shelves washington, d.c. bookstore employees were already restocking the tell-all about the operation that killed osama bin laden. greg over works at cramer books. he's not surprised by the instant success of "no easy day." the book is written by a former navy s.e.a.l. who claims to be one of the first through the door during the attack on bin laden. >> you know, the classified information that only a few people have, that's what people really get excited about. >> reporter: the pentagon says the author is revealing secret information and should have allowed the department of defense to prescreen the book before its release. >> it is the height of irresponsibility. not to have this kind of material checked for the

the former beatle was knighted by queen elizabeth in england in 1997. the rain is not done with us. >> tomorrow will be a lot more rain than what we're seeing out there right now. right now scattered showers. any showers that do develop and any showers that have developed are producing locally hef ve downpours. most in through portions of southern maryland. take a look outside. one thing we've all seen is very warm and very humid conditions. the humidity is way up there today. we're sitting right now at a temperature of 88 degrees. you can see all those clouds across the region. that's actually shower activity trying to make its way through the district right now. 88 the temperature. dewpoint of 72. winds out of the south at 20 miles an hour. it's been a little gusty over at dulles, at the national airport there, reagan national also a little gusty. 88 degrees near. 86 in annapolis. 88 in fredericksburg. very warm. very muggy. take a look at the heat index. 95 right now in washington. 95 in annapolis. 93 in packs river. if you went outside and you thought, this is hot, it's

definitely on the warm side. very sticky out there. we do have showers to talk about. not a lot. once again most of the activity in through southern maryland. also up around frederick county, washington county. around the i-81 corridor a few showers. some more down to the south trying to make their way into the area. here's where some of the heaviest rain is to the south and west of waldorf. also over towards the deal area. over towards huntingtown seeing heavy rain from this area of thunderstorms. you can see a couple bolts of lightning there, too. nothing severe. once again, any of these showers that develop will produce locally heavy downpours during the day today. we are just getting started. we still have the remnants of isaac just off to the west. kind of petering out a little bit. the moisture is still here. it's all coming up from the south. that's where we're going to see it tomorrow. here's where tonight's rain will be. tomorrow's rain actually coming from the frontal boundary that will make its way our way. remnants of isaac with the showers ahead of it. tomorrow the remnants move up to the north. here comes the frontal boundary. that front will provide a focal

point for the rain. today there's just no focal point to get those storms running across our area. tomorrow, i think we will have that focal point. it will be that cold front. numerous showers and thunderstorms during the day tomorrow. any storms that do develop could be on the heavy side. thursday most of the activity should stay to the south around richmond, maybe southern maryland. most of us thursday should stay dry. it is going to be very warm, though. i think temperatures get back into the low 90s. i think they stay there right on through the end of the week. this evening, mostly cloudy with scattered showers. some of those will be heavy, once again. temperatures 81 to 85 degrees. tomorrow morning partly cloudy, a few showers, warm and muggy. temperatures 70 to 74 degrees. most of us tomorrow morning will stay on the dry side. take those umbrellas just in case because, once again, i do expect to see some of that heavy rain coming in tomorrow afternoon. some flooding will be possible once again. 84 to 89. here's the next couple of days showing you those temperatures on the rise. 92 on thursday. 93 on friday.

airport right now. dewpoint, 72, though. that heat index hitting at 95 right now. it is a very warm and soupy atmosphere. it's not going to take a lot to get these showers started. tomorrow i think, though, a much better chance to get those showers started. there's a lot of shower activity out there. take a look. see showers in through southern maryland, back towards frederick and around frederick county. showers towards the panhandle of west virginia and along the mountains. a few to the west of fredericksburg that are going to try to come into the d.c. metro. most of us have remained on the dry side. heaviest rain now around waldorf and 301. over towards -- heavier downpours with this have since died out a little bit. wider vi showing a lot of shower activity just off to the west. that's where the moisture is coming from. to the west and up from the south. as long as that's going to happen during the day tomorrow, we just need that trigger in the

atmosphere. tomorrow's trigger will be the frontal boundary. i think it'll be draped right across the area. and a much better chance, i think, for some skaerted showers and thunderstorms, some of which will have locally heavy downpours. tomorrow, i think, is going to be the day to watch. on thursday we just get warm. something else we're watching? a tropical storm. tropical storm leslie is out there. it's down a little bit farther to the south and east. here it is here with winds now of 65 miles an hour. it's actually going to increase in intensity and expected to be a category 2 hurricane very close to bermuda. and then some of the computer models trying to bring it close tore the east coast. for us, what does that mean? for us that means rough surf down there towards our beaches. that is about it. if you're thinking about heading to the beaches this weekend, just acknowledge the fact you are going to see some rough surf out there for sure. as far as that storm is concerned for us, no problem here. what will be a problem will be the heat the next couple of days. 92 on thursday. 93 on friday. and then 88 on saturday. but that heat will not last
