first pitch for the nationals a and the marlins at 1:30 this afternoon. 77 degrees. near perfect, cooler, less humid than yesterday and no two-hour rain delay during this game unless yesterday. a beautiful morning will lead to the partly sunny afternoon. chances of five or ten minute long showers up in the high spots. but in town, nothing to worry about. temperatures in the 70s today as opposed to 91 and humid yesterday. >> chuck, thanks. the national weather service is looking into reports of two possible tornados in northern virginia. >> the storm caused major damage in parts of fairfax county. news4's chris gordon is live in reston where residents are cleaning up this morning. i was out that way yesterday and trees blocked off roadways. it looks like a mess out there now. >> that's right, angie and richard. this is south shore road in reston. the area i'm told got hit the

worst. you see the tree chippers and a big crane over here, because this house had a tree fall through the roof into the kitchen. luckily, nobody hurt. if you pan further up south shore road you will see that there is a car up the street, parked at -- it was basically got a karate chop by the tree. these are mature, tall, thick trees. and there's an area where a carport was destroyed. now with us now live and joining us and i hope you can hear us over all the activity seems like midday here. thank you for being with us. this is deputy chief mike riley, fire and rescue. did you get a confirmation on a tornado? >> yes. last year it was confirmed with our communication center that we were tracking on doppler radar what they confirmed to be a tornado. in the chantilly area and then down to the reston area and then tracked it up into virginia. >> reporter: let's talk about

the nearby skandia circle. >> well, several homes there were destroyed. trees coming down. people trapped in their homes. we managed to get in there, get those people out. none of them were injured. they did have some pets that were trapped in the basement. our trcrews got those as well. >> reporter: how fully deployed were you? >> the storm impacted us at 3:30 and then an hour later we had about 58% of all our field forces deployed. including a boat rescue on the potomac river. >> reporter: even though it was a satuay, you were on stand by. >> i was on stand by. we have 37 fire stations staffed 24/7. they put additional staff on as well. that was helpful. >> reporter: deputy chief mike riley, thank you. we'll update what efforts are going on during the day. but reston, hit hard. the cleanup, not only is fully

underway at this early hour on a sunday morning as we have had team coverage throughout yesterday afternoon and evening and coming in today, but you see they have got a lot more work ahead. but luckily, a lot of damage, minor injuries. that's the latest from reston, live. richard d angie, back to you. >> chris, thank you. the storm did rip through pretty quickly and without much warning. >> it caught hundreds off guard in prince georges county and it's to blame for at least a dozen injuries. the high winds and heavy rain tore through the fair and upper marlboro yesterday. hundreds tried to go into the show place arena and this caused a near stampede. four people were hospitalized and officials say the storm and the ensuing stampede are responsible for the injuries. >> the people knew that they were being told to evacuate and told to evacuate for a reason. they could see and feel that reason. so there was an urge to leave

the open air and get in a covered building. >> a couple of tents were knocked over. many d.c. residents will clean up from the storm. >> the storm damaged homes and businesses and look at this building at the corner in northeast washington. it flew off and damaged a nearby building. people who were there say it was a miracle no one was hurt. >> we looked up and we just seen the top coming down pretty fast. we couldn't tell if anybody was underneath, but apparently no one was. >> the winds toppled trees across the area. this was in the rock creek section of d.c. the trees took down power lines along with it. at this time, around 19,000 people are still without power in our area. pepco is reporting 4,200 outages. dominion has around 12,000 still without electricity. bge says about 1,500 of their

customers are still in the dark. stay with news4 as we bring you complete coverage of the storm including the latest power outage numbers. you can follow our nbc4 facebook and twitter pages. a scary scene on the potomac river as police had to rescue people from the water after their boat overturned. a dragon boat or a large racing boat capsized around 2:00 p.m. yesterday. only some of the people were wearing life jackets, but police were able to rescue everybody. witnesses who were driving by say they actually boat capsize and they heard people screaming and immediately called park police. >> maybe 15 or 20 people were there. everybody was on the water and they began just to scream help help. >> none of the people rescued had to go to the hospital.

the boat was towed to grafly point. a bombing in northern iraq killed seven police recruits and injured 17 others. this happened at a military base near the city of kirkuk. the recruits gathered in a parking lot and were ready to apply or the jobs as officers. no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing at this point. secretary of state hillary clinton says she'll continue to try to convince russia to support sanctions against syria. russia just rejected her call to increase pressure on bashar al assad. she says if they don't support new sanctions the u.s. and allies will boost their support for the syrian opposition. president obama is campaigning this weekend in florida. he's telling voters that creating more jobs is his top priority right now and he's calling on americans to rally for achievable goals that will lead to new jobs. meanwhile, his newest high profile surrogate is in our area

today. mayor castro attended a kickoff yesterday. he was the keynote speaker at the democratic national convention in charlotte earlier this week. he talked about why president obama deserves a second term. >> there's no question that it's a close race in virginia. i believe what's going to tip the scales is president obama's commitment to creating opportunities and economic prosperity. what he has done already, 30 straight months of private sector job growth, 4.5 million new jobs created and what he wants to do in the future. >> mayor castro will be on "meet the press" with david gregory this morning at 10:30 right here on nbc4. mitt romney will be on "meet the press" this morning and he also spent yesterday in virginia. the republican presidential nominee is blaming president obama for exposing the military to huge spending cuts. defense spending will take a major cut automatically next year if the president and congress cannot reach an agreement on any budget.

the rain came quickly in our area yesterday. so fast it caught some people by surprise. some unlucky folks were stuck outside when the skies opened up. soaking them immediately, but while some were trying to run out of the rain, we found at least one -- there's always one guy who loves to be in it. we asked him if he enjoyed the soaking run, he said you bet. >> i'm sure he's not the only one out there.

>> you bet. well, i was at work yesterday. i love running in the rain. the toughest part -- you have to get out the door. i mean, i run -- i never really run less than seven miles so i'm a sweaty mess when i get back anyway. >> but soggy tennis, wet socks. >> i agree. there are parts of the gw running path headed to mount vernon that tend to submerge in heavy rain. that was the last time i had both soaked to the bottom of my knees in rain and that wasn't fun because i still had eight more miles to go to get home. as long as you can keep the shoes from being completely soggy it's not fun. if you're outside, today, you can hang the clothes on the line, put the shoes out in the sunshine and by tomorrow, nothing more than a distant memory. bright sunshine here in washington. 68 degrees now at national airport. dew points though have really plummeted. about a 15 to 20 degree dew point drop today compared to the

same time yesterday. what does that mean? here's what the dew point means, dew points are back in the 60s. 60 to 64. here's where we were yesterday, 70 to 74% under the oppressive range. current temperatures now are warming into the mid 60s. already one spot, annapolis at 70 degrees. and cumberland back in the 50s. a beautiful way to get the day started. we'll reach into the mid to upper 70s with plenty of sunshine for most. we'll bubble up a cumulus field and that can wring out some five or ten minute showers and that's just it. the rain chances today, what little they are, are up to the north and west. there bogoes the rain showers a it rained in ocean city, maryland, this morning. a little ripple in the atmosphere. as that guides in, that's the

reason we'll wring out some showers north and east today. after the sun goes down, are we sitting pretty here as the high pressure is building on in. there goes the cold front, the rain and all the mess of yesterday, out the sea. good riddance to it. a chance of showers in the high spots but that's it. every cloud will run for cover and disappear. 50s or the most tomorrow. 40s for some. a nice sunny stretch of weather starting tomorrow -- really starting today. but in effect for today and lasting all week long. sunshine for now, sun and a cloud mix by later on this afternoon. no severe weather threat today. and most of us won't even see a rain drop. highs today, mid to upper 70s. then tomorrow, on a crisp, cool start, it will be a refreshing, gorgeous day tomorrow.

the d.c. metro area is once again cleaning up after a major storm system ripped through the region. in the district the storm knocked over at least ten trees causing problems for many r reside residents. fallen trees dozens of homes with electrical wires still on the ground. two tornados may have touched down in chantilly and prince georges county. right now, here's how the numbers stack up. about 17,000 people are still without power in our area. at one point, more than 150,000 customers didn't have electricity because of all those storms. good morning. everyone. welcome to news4 today. i'm angie goff. >> i'm richard jordan. it's sunday, september 9, 2012. the storms have moved out of the way and brought some cooler temperatures. >> storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell has moved outside. looks like you've lost your jacket. >> i have. it's 67 degrees and from my view

tall and wide tree that fell on the house behind me. they're trying to get the larger pieces of it off. it went through the roof and into the kitchen and the people -- it's uninhabitable. the people weren't hurt, but they're looking for a place to stay for a while. as we go up south shore road, you will see a number of other vehicles and houses that have damage. a carport is totaled. there is a truck without a roof. and a car that has been basically cut in half by a tree. it turns out that the truck owner had some damage during the durachio. i'm being joined by mike riley. just one more time, i want to confirm that there was a tornado here and elsewhere throughout this area. >> sure, chris. last night emergency operations center was in contact with the

national weather service. and through doppler radar and other scientific methods they tracked an confirmed a tornado from fairfax county, through herndon, here into reston, then out to tyson's corner and into maryland. >> reporter: you were busy last night. we talked about at 9:00. i want to look ahead to the day ahead. you're on stand by for what? >> obviously as people come out, kind of surveying the damage, may they quickly -- obviously there's a lot of dangers down there. you know, power lines and other things that are in that debris. so we want to caution our citizens if they go out there and see power lines down, we want them to assume they're power, energized and could cause danger, and not to touch them until the companies take care of their own wires. >> deputy chief michael riley. so nice to have you out here with us for news4. this tornado hit through the area hard hit through chantilly,

in this week's wednesday's child, we meet a modest, polite young man named keith. he's a soft-spoken artist who is a straight "a" student. >> he's had to deal with some disappointments in his young life. barbara harrison has his story. >> reporter: cartoon characters are his specialty.

at 13 years old, keith says he loves art of all kinds. and likes seeing what other people create. >> well, i like to look for things like coe lllages and thi you don't normally see. >> reporter: he checked out the books and he's a bright, young man. >> he's incredibly artistic. he does beautifully in school. cognitively he's right on track. he's in the eighth grade and working on grade level. >> reporter: what's your favorite subject? >> math. >> reporter: are you doing well in that? >> yeah. >> reporter: what kind of grades are you making? >> as. >> reporter: keith is modest about the things he does well. he's just a nice guy, but he has had some disappointments in his young life. >> about six years ago, he came into care with his siblings who have since been adopted.

we are looking for keith to have a permanent family as well so he can belong to a family much like his siblings. >> reporter: keith says the hardest part about being in foster care is having to move so often. what are you hoping will happen? >> that i won't have to move around and i'll get adopted. i'm someone who is caring, loving, won't give up easily. they won't just doubt you whenever you're doing something. >> reporter: it turns out keith is very good with clay. he created and painted a bowl and definitely impressed the artist's owner of the studio. >> i think he has a very unique style. all his own. i love how he's so confident. when he walked in, we asked him to draw on this big white piece of paper which is a lot of pressure. he just dove right in and got to work right away. >> reporter: some art supplies we are her gift to take home. and he also got a gift certificate. >> you can come back and do a

street. residents say it missed cars by a few feet. two tornadoes were spotted in new york city yesterday. >> how rare is that? >> well, tornadoes in new york city are very rare. you know, further out on long island, it was not in manhattan itself. but still very, very rare. they probably only average one tornado in september. once every five to ten years up there. it would be very unusual in september to get that kind of weather up there. so very unusual for them. and boy, did we get hammered by mother nature yesterday as well. unconfirmed reports that it was probably a tornado out there towards chantilly and another brief touchdown or a spinup in prince georges county. we will not be facing that kind of severe weather today. today will be a severe clear day to be outside. slim, slim little chance of a quick shower in the high spots, but that is it. i don't think we need to worry about in and around town at all. you folks out towards chesapeake bay, out on to the eastern shore, no rain chances for you today.

68 degrees at national airport. look at that beautiful picture out there. the blue waters of the potomac, reflecting the blue sky overhead. temperatures are climbing quickly now, through the 60s. headed into the 70s here shortly within the next hour or so. and 68 at 10:00. a beautiful morning around here. i put the little mention out there spotty showers north and west to keep you advised there may be a quick little shower. unlike these wind gusts yesterday, andrews air force base, 59 mile per hour. and rosslyn and virginia, 53 mile per hour. and gusts 40 or higher for annapolis, reagan national airport and dulles international, 47 mile per hour gust. so a nice day today. by comparison for sure, nothing showing up on don't learn too close to us. these rain showers off shore are going further off shore. that's that little impulse in

the atmosphere that's coming our way during the course of the afternoon. might bring out quick showers and mostly in the mountains of west virginia and pennsylvania. high pressure is moving on in by late tonight into tomorrow. high pressure in the upper midwest. it will push the cooler, drier air in place. we are in the 60s in town this morning. i think we'll in the 50s tomorrow morning. likely to be the coolest morning in three months across the area. high pressure settles on in for the rest of the work and school week. sunny stretch beginning today and continuing through tomorrow. tuesday, wednesday, basically carbon copies, monday through thursday of this upcoming week. so today, sunny now. a mix of clouds and sun this afternoon. a little shower chance in the mountains today. one or two spots might reach 80 degrees. but then tomorrow, sunny and 78. tuesday, mostly sunny. tuesday morning might be the
