i want to know what's going through your head after that touchdown pass. >> iwas just one of those -- you know, sometimes you can shock yourself with a play. and i was hot on that play. i tried to feel my hot route. i covered it. so i came back to my primary, and thankfully i had enough time to do that. i got plowed, but he made a great catch. that was a special way to start off a career with that touchdown. >> you seem so comfortable out there, so poised, that's what the other guys were talking about. were there any butterflies? >> yeah, there were butterflies. but the one thing i tried to make sure i did this week is keep my mind clear, know what i had to go out and do and be myself and have fun, don't stress about it, don't try to prove anything to anyone. i leaned on the other guys this week, especially in this game, to do their jobs and make sure everybody was where they were supposed to be, and they all showed up. >> how much of a help was to have him back there? >> it was great. he made big runs, 28 carries and

98 yards. i just was proud of him and the offensive linfor staying at it. and eventually it turned into a 70-yard gain. >> reporter: and you know, jim and pat, any other year, if you have a rookie running back who's a sixth round pick, 96 yards would be a huge deal. but not this year. robert griffin iii's 320 passing yards, the second most all-time for a rookie quarterback in his debut game. he led the team to 40 points, as well. that's the first time that's happened by a rookie quarterback in his debut since 1950. the guy just shattering records. and he's a true joy. not only to watch, but to talk to. he's beyond his ears. >> cool under pressure, you're right, beyond his ears. >> and he looked like he was having fun. >> reporter: he was having a blast. he set the bar so unexpectedly

rg-iii a little bit later. pat, we'll see you at 5:00. wild weather over the weekend. people in the area are still cleaning up after those violent storms. news 4 has more on the extensive damage in fairfax county. >> reporter: we're here on south shore road in reston. this is a neighborhood with a lot of tall, very mature trees. in saturday's storm they came tumbling down on tops of cars. you can see the damage done here. you can see a huge stack of broken limbs here. we also across the street have a truck that was crushed by a falling tree. and you can also see the damage done to this house here. the carport collapsed on top of the car here. just a very scary situation for folks who live here in this neighborhood. fortunately, though, no injuries, no serious injuries in this storm. so despite all of the damage, people who live here say that they consider themselves to be quite lucky. they just got a mess to clean up. some damage to their homes. but everybody is okay.

now, in terms of the power outages, at the height of all of this, there were thousands of people without power. the good news here is that a lot of progress has been made. and most people are back online. they have their electricity back. we just have minimal outages at this point. in reston, megan mcgrath, news 4. that storm ushered in some cool air, fall air. just how cool is it going to get tonight? >> bundle up. meteorologist veronica johnson is outside now on the weather deck. you'll need a sweater in a few hours. >> reporter: that is true, jim. a lot of folks probably needing the jackets by tomorrow morning. today the realization, you feel it if you're outside. this feels like fall out here. we've got low humidity. we've got a little bit of a breeze. we've got nice sunshine over us. and again, those lower temperatures, cooler air has really moved in. if you're like me when you stepped outside this morning, the realization that, hey, you cannot take your dog out in your

pajamas anymore. in howard county, starting out in the mid-50s. 52 around falls church. 60 right in d.c. when we take a look back at the cool mornings, indeed coming up, tonight, tomorrow morning, could be the coolest that we have seen in four months going back to may 19th. because we're forecasting right now an overnight temperature of 56 degrees. temperatures out there right now, lovely. we're in the low to mid-70s throughout the area. d.c. at 76. 76 also around waldorf and packs river. hardly a cloud to be found. in some areas down to the south. around here, we just have a few clouds drifting through. tonight we clear out, a nice evening. we drop to the 60s. again, sweater weather as we said for late evening. jacket weather coming up tomorrow morning. how long can we keep this up? i'll have your forecast coming up. commuters who use the memorial bridge between arlington and the district can

count on delays for the next several months. roadwork began this morning to repair some structural deficiencies. four of the bridges' six lanes will be closed. eastbound lanes will be closed between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 in the afternoon. westbound will be closed between 9:30 in the morning and 2:30. the park service tells us at least one lane will be working in both directions at all times. it's back to work for congress. congress is back in session. some huge problems remain unresolved and time is running out to fix them. but don't expect any sudden fixes. party leaders are concerned that taking the lead in a controversial issue, any controversial issue could cost their party on election day. here's steve's handelsman. >> reporter: lawmakers in the house, and the senate are back after a month-long break, with a pile of urgent business. but they're focused first on the elections. >> both parties are looking at public opinion polls, looking at

which parts of their agenda is popular and which part of the other's is unpopular and dramatize with floor votes that don't result in any bills. >> reporter: so democrats put a new vote on the paul ryan budget to drive home to voters he would change medicare. republicans drive home to voters that president obama lost half a billion on solyndra. the impasse over hiking taxes on the rich, that if not settled, could raise everyone's rates january 1st, and trigger huge defense and social service cuts. the fiscal cliff is getting put off until after election day. the farm bill will help with the drought, is partially postponed because republicans are pushing for a cut in food stamps. >> the american people are asking to balance this budget. >> reporter: each side blames the other. >> for people outside and out of work, they're astonished by the

a man with scissors sparked a scare for miley cyrus. the man showed up at the door of cyrus' home around 4:00 a.m. saturday. he claimed to be a friend of hers and began throwing himself against an outside wall and was trying to break into the house. he was arrested when officers saw him jump behind some bushes. cyrus wasn't home at the time. actress kristen stewart said she will be totally fine in her movie with robert pattenson. they both starred in the twilight saga breaking dawn part t two. her co-star from snow white and the husband it was rumored she was having an affair with her co-star. ryan reynolds and blake lively tied the knot yesterday in south carolina. e-news report the two had a small reception with performances by bette midler,

yeah, that kind of small reception. their relationship went public less than a year ago. this is the second marriage for 35-year-old reynolds and first for the 25-year-old lively. it is back. nbc's hit show "the voice" returns for its third season tonight. all the cast members you've grown to know and love will be year. >> we talked to blake earlier today, and he says this season is going to be bigger and better than ever. he also had some great things to say about music fans in this area. >> it always surprises me, with the d.c. area, the country music fan base in that area. and it's just -- you know, you just don't think of d.c. as a

against mayor rahm emanuel in a bitter contract dispute. >> some 400,000 students are now out of class, as nbc's jay gray reports the big issue here in the strike is not teacher salaries. >> reporter: there was an abrupt change to the lesson plan for 25,000 public schoolteachers this morning. >> we are all together in this fight. >> reporter: and because they're together, many of the students are not. the walkout forced as many as 400,000 kids and their parents to scramble when they learned classes would be canceled. >> i looked out the window this morning and i say it's not fair to the kids this morning. >> reporter: educators say what isn't fair is that it had to come to this. all of the noise is not really about money, the arage salary of a chicago teacher is more than $70,000 a year. and both sides say that's fair. what they don't want is the current push by the city to cut

health benefits and to tie teacher evaluations to student performance and standardized test scores, something they fear could result in almost 6,000 teachers losing their jobs in the next two years. chicago mayor rahm emanuel says the talks should continue, but so should classes. >> this is, in my view, a strike of choice. and it's the wrong choice for our children. >> reporter: many of the students say they're frustrated as well. >> it's affecting my year. probably causing me to graduate in july, which i really don't want to do. >> reporter: during this unexpected vacation, at least 140 schools opened their doors so students could have breakfast and lunch. class activities are a lot different, but then so are the lessons today. focused on patience and the process of negotiation. jay gray, nbc news, chicago. a neighborhood in augusta,

georgia, is seeing red today over the color pink. the issue is a child's backyard play house. becky peg built it for her 4-year-old granddaughter. unfortunately she built without getting the approval of the homeowner's association. although she said you can't see it from the street, some neighbors complained about the color. now the association is suing to have it repainted, or removed. >> there's too much crime and everything else, these lawyers need to be worrying about other things that are way more important than whether or not my granddaughter has a pink play house or not. >> part of the approval is the color. we didn't disapprove the play house, we disapproved the color. >> why do you like it pink? >> because it's my favorite color. >> would you want your play house brown? >> no. >> there you go. peg said she will move before she repaints the play house. a lawyer told her the chances she would win a lawsuit are about 50/50. the taliban says it is on

mission to kidnap or assassinate prince harry. harry arrived in afghanistan last week for a four-month tour of duty. during his mission he will be flying apache helicopters. it's his second trip to afghanistan. he was back there in '08 until the news was leaked to the media. he was then abruptly sent home because of security concerns. the paralympic games in london just wrapped up, and they were by far the biggest in history. more than 2.5 million tickets were sold. and today london is buzzing over last night's star-studded closing ceremonies. nbc's ian williams has a look back at some of the inspiring stories of these games. >> reporter: the spectacular london tribute to athletes who captured the hearts of millions. the world watch from every corner of the world. the thrill of victory to former race car driver alex zenardi. it's extraordinary he's alive

skin care. >> products made for and marked toward men. liz crenshaw is here with more on the big business that goes beyond the shaving cream and balms and seasons. >> it's an interesting, we call it manning up skin care. it's become a near billion-dollar industry. marketers are basically making room for men's skin care products. it's not just shaving lotion, a little bit of shaving gel. essentially they're giving them entire shelf space for men's products. which is kind of an interesting turn. >> are they cheaper than women's skin care products? because we spend a fortune -- >> exactly. you know how expensive women's care products are. the men's skin care products tend to be less expensive, don't have quite as many ingredients. one tip we suggest women to look at some of the men's skin care products because they may have the same active ingredients of the products you love for less money. what's important to realize

a woman in south carolina is accused of pointing a gun at republican congresswoman tray gowdy. it happened last night in a

church parking lot. gowdy's home state of south carolina. he was in his car waiting to pick up his daughter from an evening service. he said a woman in the parking lot thought he was following her. he told her he wasn't, but then she drew a weapon, and pointed it at him. gowdy drove to a nearby police station and got an escort back to the church. police arrested the woman. officials at yellowstone national park say youtube video of a bison encounter made them really angry. >> take a look. this is tough to watch. they're especially upset with the adult who initiated the whole thing. some kids were walking along a trail when they came across this bison roaming free and grazing. the man shooting this video encouraged the kids to get closer and touch it. the bison zeroed in on one small boy. that youngster managed to run around a tree and rejoin his group. everyone is laughing in this video. not yellowstone officials. they say they're incredibly lucky that no one was injured or
