change the current picture in the ultra-competitive smartphone market. google's android is the most used mobile operating system in the world and samsung has grabbed the lead in sales. something apple hopes to change starting friday, when the company will begin to take preorders for the 5. jay gray, nbc news, san francisco. >> now, the 5 as they're calling it hits store shelves september 21st. a 16 gigabyte phone will start at $199. people on alert today after another rabid beaver encounter in fairfax county. it happened here saturday on a dock near the hidden pond nature center. the beaver suddenly leapt out of the water and began chasing a group of kids. animal control officer eventually shot the beaver. just last week a beaver attacked an 83-year-old woman in lake barcroft. more on the story coming up here on news4 at 5:00 tonight.

mallette green. >> great to be here, pat. >> let's start with 18-year-old markel ross, who was killed yesterday while walking to school, central high school in capital heights. and of course there was 17-year-old amber stanley, the flowers high school senior shot to death in her home last month. your listeners are very upset but they feel connected to these students. >> they really do. it's a tragedy when any child dies, but these are children who were destined for success. and you are not supposed to be gunned down in your bed. and you're not supposed to be gunned down when you're walking to school with books in your hands. our listeners are primarily parents and many of them live in prince george's county, so this cuts really deep, because it could have been one of their children. and what the community is doing now is they're saying, look, enough is enough. parents need to take back their community and take a stronger stand in the community. >> and in fact, your listeners talked to you, talked to amber stanley's father, who wants to

help other young women. tell us about that. >> absolutely. anthony stanley, of course, still dealing with a tremendous amount of grief, is channeling all of that energy into something positive. he wants to help other children. this is a man who arrived on the murder scene before the police did. so we can only imagine what he went through. >> sure. >> so what he is doing is now supporting self-defense awareness efforts in the community. and he's doing one this weekend at amber stanley's high school, flowers high school. there's the information on your screen. they are going to have a martial artist out there. samuel scott. he's been around the community for a very long time. and this man, along with amber stanley's father, is -- they are going to be, you know, promoting young women, protecting yourself. of course, this would not have helped in amber stanley's case, but it's something for this father to do. he talked about it on several of our programs, including our talk radio program on satellite radio. >> he's a father doing something

world. apple put the rumors to rest today and unveiled the iphone 5. the new phone is lighter, faster and has a larger screen. but the price hasn't changed. a 16 gigabyte phone starts at $199. preorders for the phone start september 14th. another incident involving a rabid beaver in fairfax county. officials tell us on saturday, a beaver jumped out of the water and ran toward a group of children at a hidden pond nature center. an animal control officer eventually shot the beaver. no one was hurt. now to a campus controversy at american university. a professor took her baby to class and breast fed in front of the students while she was delivering a lecture. >> the debate has gone viral. >> uncomfortable in that class and i don't go to classrooms to feel uncomfortable. >> reporter: malorie kenzy dropped her class because of her professor's actions on the first day.

she said the professor shown in this profile photo on the website brought her infant daughter to class and breast fed without covering up in front of 40 students. how did it make you to feel that? >> honestly i think it would have been less of a big deal if she had given forewarning. but i think everybody kind of bowed their head in shauk and awe. >> reporter: the professor pine wrote an online counterpunch article saying the infant had a fever and canceling class did not seem like an option. >> i understand the struggles of a single mom, but at the same time i don't think anye in the class who would have been upset if the class had been canceled. >> reporter: pine said she thought to herself, who cares? do university students really need to be so moly cod dled they should not see something i do on public transportation nearly every day? we tried to talk to the professor at her house this evening. she refused. in a written statement, a

university spokesperson said, au does not have a policy that specifically addresses breast-feeding. the university is guided by federal and d.c. law which do not prohibit or allow breast-feeding in certain environments. some students say the university should give the okay. >> i think that women should be allowed to breast-feed in public, because it's not something that's unnatural, and it's not something we should be ashamed of. >> reporter: i'm shomari stone, news5. >> professor fine continues to teach. the former boyfriend of amanda knox maintains that the couple had nothing to do with the death of a british exchange student in italy. in his new book, "honor bound" rafael said he understands why police suspected them of killing meredith kircher in 2007. he acknowledged that the couple's sometimes strange behavior gave police reason to suspect them.

he and knox were initially convicted of killing kircher but that conviction was overturned last year. his book comes ot september 18th. the duke and duchess of cambridge toured a rolls-royce factory. they were also treated to a local custom called a dragon dance when they visited one of singapore's oldest housing estates. it's called queenstown, and it was named in honor of queen elizabeth's kor a nation in 1953. during their tours, william was asked how many children he would like to have. for the first time he gave a number. two. the british media immediately launched a new round of speculation about whether kate might be expecting. angelina jolie is meeting with syrian refugees, in her role as a special united nations envoy. the actress was at the turkish border yesterday. today she met with lebanon's prime minister.

afterwards she told reporters that she was grateful to the lebanese people for offering shelter to the refugees. and she talked about meeting three syrian mothers today. >> three women who were alone with their children, and they made the crossing alone, and they were very, very emotional. but so grateful. and wanted me to express their gratitude to the lebanese people. >> jolie is pushing for more funding to help take care of the massive influx of refugees in countries along the syrian border. for a third straight day students in chicago did not go to class, as city teachers continued to strike. the chicago teachers union president warned that the strike could be as long as both sides continue to hold fast on their various positions. union leaders are currently reviewing the latest proposal by the city school board. 26,000 teachers have been on strike since monday, leaving 350,000 students out of school. at issue is a new teacher evaluation procedure, and a

system for rehiring laidoff teachers. mayor rahm emanuel says he is not a fan of the band nickelback, despite a sign that the teachers strike that said otherwise. a strike supporter took a picture of the sign that read rahm emanuel likes nickelback. he meant it as an insult. and the picture, well, it went viral. today an emanuel spokesperson said the mayor is not a big fan of the group. the man who made the sign has now changed it to say emanuel likes the group creed. the fda issues a warning to loreal about how it is advertising some skin creams. >> plus, the major changes coming to the menu at mcdonald's. my dad, he -- he's hurting really bad. >> and a little girl's quick thinking, saves her father's life.

a warning today for cosmetics company loreal. the food and drug administration says one of loreal's products exaggerates its benefits. the product is youth activating concentrate that claims to boost the activity of genes. the fda said only drug products can make those claims and that the company needs fda approval to sell drugs in the u.s. loreal said it will respond but that it is in compliance with all laws.

my mom and dad do not know any english. so that's why i have to talk. >> that's okay. you're doing a great okay? the paramedics are on the way. >> i didn't want to be shy because my dad's pretty important to me. i want him to be good. >> reporter: he says he's happy because his daughter is a hero. and tuesday she was recognized as just that. >> we came especially here today to celebrate a very smart young lady. [ applause ] >> reporter: her 911 district awarded her for her actions. a thank you for helping them save her dad. >> i feel really, really happy that my dad's still with me. and that he can now teach me how to play soccer. because without him, i never could. >> the american red cross says parents should go over emergency plans with their children. some can even learn to call 911 as early as age 3. now, at 5:00, more on the murder of a sufficient ambassador in libya.
