caused two trains, both on the red line, to lose power and keep tens and thousands of passengers stuck in the system for up to an hour. >> do you have a delay down there? >> i have to get to work. >> how did you spend the time? >> listen to music and look at videos. >> not upset? >> no. it's usual. this all began between 8:00 and 9:00 this morning. just like this one here, it was half way between the rhode island avenue station when suddenly, that middle rail lost power. metro couldn't solve the problem. eventually, they had to get some 60 people off of the train. >> we made the decision to get the 60 passengers safely off that train, back to a platform located nearby at brentwood yard where buses were waiting. there were no injuries as a result of the evacuation. two passengers were transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation. >> there was no evacuation in

the second incident this morning. but between 9:00 and 10:00, a red line train near the tenly town station came to a halt after the power failed. >> metro carries a million people a day, any time our passengers are affected in that way in their regular commute is tremendously concerning. >> tonight, metro is looking at data from its computers to figure out what caused those two outages. this is bruce johnson reporting from northeast washington. for 9news now. i'm surae chinn at the metro stop where the second power failure occurred. and where riders are frustrated. >> i don't know. it was such a mess. i didn't want to take the train anymore. >> and lots of confusion. >> they are going to evacuate us again and get the power back on. >> andy took this picture sitting in the dark train. >> no electricity at all. >> the six car train was full to capacity with roughly a

hours. advising passengers to get off at burke and find some other way to get home. the railroad is working to transport them around the problem. if you are expecting someone, keep the dinner warmed up, it could be a while. students in chicago are back in school today after teachersended that seven-day strike. union delegates voted to suspend the walkout last night. their contract is not perfect, but it's good enough to get the teachers back into the classroom. the d.c. city council is back to work after a two month recess. mary introduced three bills. one of which would pave the way for automobiles, or if you prefer, self-driving cars. now this measure allows for rules governing the vehicles to be created. these cars could provide a safe alternative for the elderly or visually impaired. laws permitting self-driving cars are in place in nevada, florida, and california. store owners in one dangerous neighborhood are

turning to babies to help fight crime. take a look at this. when the shutters come down on these stores in southeast london, they have baby faces painted on them. they are all over the place. experts say they were looking for a way to fight the violence. >> when people look at this. they think of their babies and families. >> while some residents say babies aren't going to make any difference, doctors at the university of pennsylvania found that the big eyes and the chubby cheeks trigger a caring response in our brains. the company behind the project plans to monitor the crime statistics for a year to see if the baby faces perhaps make a difference. this is a live look outside right now and topper shutt will be along with your forecast. >> it involved a helicopter, a stuffed animal, and some flowers. now dad is in big trouble after the helicopter dance request here at patriot high school. the story coming up.

a u.s. customs and border patrol pilot in trouble tonight. apparently he went too far. the pilot dropped an invitation from a chopper over patriot high last week. however, as reporter peggy fox explains, dad got permission from the school, but not from his boss. >> all of a sudden, this helicopter came and it was sitting right over top of that
