remains. this is 9news now. >> and talk about a disturbing discovery, that bag of body parts turns up on a railroad track forcing trains to come to a screeching halt. >> right now police are in the 9300-block of manassas drive in manassas park just trying to figure out where those remains could have possibly come from, and that is where we find matt jablow. matt, are there any answers yet? >> reporter: derek, it's a mystery that police are hoping to solve very quickly. how a bag filled with human body parts ended up on the train tracks here in manassas park. >> we were on the train. >> reporter: it was a pretty typical commute home for cassandra ramirez. making her way on the 615 train. typical until right around 6:00 when the train came to a complete stop and then stayed stop for about two hours. >> quite a day. >> it has been, yes. >> reporter: ramirez was on one of four trains that was

stranded tonight because of reports of a suspicious black bag on the tracks in manassas park. >> i mean, i live not that far from manassas park. >> reporter: when it was finally determined the bag contained human body parts. >> one of the people on the train reported that. >> reporter: the stranded trains were sent to the nearest station where buses took the trains weary and somewhat unsettled passengers to their intended destinations. >> what about the whole body parts on the track thing? >> that's unfortunate and kind of a little scary too. i mean, i -- you know, i hope there is not somebody violent out there, i guess. >> unusual. >> well, to say the least. >> reporter: no word yet from police on when they might be able to make a positive identification on those human remains. and vre says today incidents should have no effect on tomorrow morning's commute. anita. >> okay, matt. thank you. new tonight, a medical spy in maryland shut down after

three lipo suction patients developed severe infections. one of them later died. today they closed the med spa. they got group a streptococcus. >> sometimes people can get an infection. but if you have multiple people having multiple infections at the same location at the same time, you need to stop everything and figure out what the origin of it is and then clean that up so no one else is in fegted. >> some of the -- infected. >> some of the symptoms of a strep a infection include fever, redness at the surgery site, severe pain and swelling, dizziness and weakness. anyone treated at this facility and experiencing complications, call the doctor. monarch med spa is cooperating with authorities. an off duty police officer got into a fight saturday at the university of maryland and now they're investigating him for drawing his gun on the man he

was fighting with sending witnesses diving behind cars to get out of the possible line of fire. gary nurenberg is here with the rest of that story. >> reporter: university of maryland police are investigating the incident and have no far made no arrests. montgomery county police say they are awaiting the investigation. that investigation by the university. that investigation of their officers actions before deciding if the should begin their own disciplinary process against the man. the story broke in the university newspaper the diamondback. the maryland yukon game was well under way but some partying tailgaters were still in parking lot 1b when the fight broke out. one woman did not want to go on camera. she said she was smashed by water when she was -- splashed by water when she was partying with a friend. the man smashed the officer's --

splashed the officer's car with water or threw it at the officer's car. accounts differ. the officer got out of the car acting in an unnecessarily belligerent way looking for trouble. a fight ensued between the officer, the man and one of the man's friends. at one point, the officer took the arm of one of the men and tried to put it behind his back. the other man interceded. at that point the officer drew his gun drawing down on the man. our witness dove behind a car to get out of the way. she said the officer did identify himself as a police officer but refused demands of the man that he prove it by showing them a badge or an id. campus police are interviewing witnesses but are getting conflicting stories. they're reviewing security camera footage to see if the incident was recorded. that investigation is still taking place. our witness was indignant at the officer's behavior and filed a lengthy witness statement. another witness said drinks were involved but was reluctant to

say that she was in anyway impaired. again, no arrests so far. >> all right, gary nurenberg. well, there was a shooting at coolidge high school in northwest dc today. one student is in the hospital tonight but the other one is in handcuffs. dc school's chancellor kaya henderson said the students left and one came back to the school with a pistol. the other was shot in the leg and is expected to be okay. john hinckley is the man who shot president reagan in 1981. he is allowed to leave people's place for 10 days at a time to visit his mom. the hospital said they didn't want to be involved in the decision but the judge has given them until october 19th to weigh in. attorney general eric holder is in the clear but more than

one dozen others could face disciplinary action. a new report from the inspector general of the justice department blames most of of the mess on federal agency and prosecutors in phoenix. the intent was to let the guns from the u.s. pass into the hands of suspected drug smugglers and then take them to mexican drug cartels. but they lost track of 2,000 of the weapons and hundreds of them ended up at crime scenes. mitt romney going from defense to offense today. he was aggressively attacking the president's economic policy and during a fund raiser the presidential nominee was working hard trying to steer his message back to the economy and away from the secretly recorded comments he made to high roller campaign donors. >> the question this campaign is not who cares about the poor and the middle class. i do. he does. the question is who can help the poor and the middle class. i can. he can't. >> well, romney's running mate paul ryan spent his day looking

for votes in virginia where a brand new poll of likely voters shows president obama leads romney by four points. he's also up six points in wisconsin and one point in colorado. the president and romney will meet in colorado will meet in two weeks. debate number one. nearly six million americans will face a tax penalty for not carrying medical coverage once the health care law goes into effect. that is 2 million people than previously estimated. most of them are expected to be middle class americans and the average penalty will be $1,200 a year. okay. a real nail biter tonight at national's park. >> we heard all kinds of screams in the newsroom. >> oh, yes. >> the nats tried to make a come back and the fans at the stadium were out on the edge of their seats because late in the game we thought the nats were going to win a playoff spot. it's been since 1933 since they pulled that off. but sadly they koent pull it off tonight -- couldn't pull it off

a thrill ride designed to last three minutes drags on for three hours. and as bb king would say, the thrill was gone. about 20 poor souls got stuck on a ride near la. they were dangling 300 feet up. the rescue came but it was probably too slow for everybody. and a comfortable chair at work, that can be a wonderful thing. but how much might you be willing to pay for the privilege and how much should taxpayers be paying for it. scott broom takes a seat at the table for the debate. >> reporter: okay. so i am faking sleeping on the job to dramatize this.

a work chair with erg nomic everything. wheels to carry 400 pounds. even an air pump to adjust the lumbar. priced at 1 $1,200 each. that's chip jewel, the director of emergency communications in frederick county. and, no, there is no one sleeping on the job here at the 911 call center. but there has been some second-guessing about the chairs. here is frederick county commission president blaine young. >> my butt sits in a used chair from a used furniture company. the average person you stop on the seat and say the county just bought a $1,200 chair for a 911 center. how much did it cost before. >> i sit there 12 hours a day, a stressful environment. >> reporter: they'll be getting 12 chairs. >> a normal office chair in this environment would probably only last a year and we spend $400.

so in four years, we have to spend $1,600 for a chair that we can spend $1,200 for. now only will it last four or five years, it will last. >> reporter: do you like it? >> love it. >> reporter: and so do i. in frederick county, scott broom, 9news now. tonight we have a health alert about arsenic levels in the foods we eat. first it was concerns about apple juice. now a consumer report investigation finds concerning levels of arsenic in rice in many common products from baby cereals to rice drinks. this woman is paying attention to this news. >> whether you're a parent or not, it's a big worry. >> they found higher levels in brown rice than white because of the way it's processed. it found higher numbers in rice

produced in southern states. >> rice is grown in water and grows in a way that it appears to absorb a bit more arsenic than other foods. >> reporter: arsenic occurs naturally in the environment. there are 2 kinds. the fda says organic arsenic passes through the body quickly and is essentially harmless. inorganic arsenic, the type found in pesticides, that can cause cancer. >> inorganic arsenic is a known human carcinogen that has been linked to skin, lung and bladder cancer. we don't want to alarm people, but we do recommend you limit the amount of rice you eat. >> reporter: and be more cautious when it comes to children. >> my advice to parents is stay away from rice and go with oatmeal. go with barley. go with wheat products. >> reporter: the food and drug administration is in the middle of its own large study. even though preliminary results show levels of arsenic are higher than expected, the fda is not telling people to stop

eating rice. >> there is no need based on a variable data and the scientific literature to change dietary consumption of rice overall. >> reporter: now, we should say, though , the fda is conducting its own study and we're going to get that data from there on the arsenic levels in the coming months. until we get it, what can we do? basically here is some suggestion. when you cook rice, cook the raw rice first and cook it in a whole lot of water. x cups of water to one cup of rice and then discard the extra. that helps get rid of any residue on the rice itself. we also should point out the consumer report found white rice had far less than brown rice. and when it comes to the baby cereals, parents stick to one serving of rice cereal a day and then introduce other grains like oatmeal or barley.

>> we found brown rice was better but maybe not. >> so eat pasta. >> or french fries [ laughing ] . before we get started, we have something to show you that's very unusual. we always talk about tornado. but this is a tornado of a different sort. it's called a fire whirl which is -- >> wow. >> it's a fire devil. this is in australia, the out back. the camera crew was actually trying to film something else. they just saw this. so you get this intense heat that rises. it rises into cool air. you get a little rotation to it. and then it draws the fire up in it. it's actually pretty cool stuff. and it doesn't happen that often and it doesn't happen actually on camera that much. because they don't last that long. they last a couple of minutes. this lasted actually about 5-10 minutes. the winds are not strong like a tornado but that's what happened. it draws the flame up. it looks like a fire tornado. pretty cool stuff. a live look outside. it's quiet. nothing like that going on here. high temperatures 72. we're 61 right now. that's a downtown temp.

seem like a little bit of a let downbut you can never count out the nationals. dodgers took a 6-0 lead into the 8th inning. but two homers cuts that in half and bryce harper sends a dribbler to third. a run scores and bryce is safe at first. he beats the throw. a few batters later mike moore showing no signs of a hurt wrist. gets a base hit to right. the nationals just don't know how to quit. six runs in the 8th to tie up the ball game. but every good story has a bad inning and it wouldn't last tonight. in the 9th matt kemp hits a homer. the dodgers win this one 7-6. but it was still an exciting game. the two play again tomorrow. a win clinches a post season berth for the nationals. >> there was no give up tonight. we came battling back. we tied the game. and just inches -- if we hit the ball hard enough and hit it

right back at the pitcher a couple feet. i love the way we kept battling. >> orioles super prospect dylan bundy the 19-year-old in seattle. in the 4th mark reynolds with a hit to right. hustling around the bases. just beats the throw home. right now it is 1-1 in the 6th inning. lots have been said about the refereeing during sunday' redskins-rams game. a lot of hits, missed penalties. thankfully nobody got seriously hurt. but most coaches are being pretty diplomatic about this issue. not saying anything to get themselves in trouble. many players aren't holding words. robert griffith iii said they took several cheap shots. that was their goal. >> there was some extracurricular stuff going on

after the plays. they were doing dirty things. i still think they have an extremely good team. the game was unprofessional. i have barely been a pro for so long, but compared to the saints, it was unprofessional. >> and good news for the defense, quarterback josh wilson was cleared to practice after suffering a concussion during the ram's game. however, he was limited. also fred davis was also cleared to practice. i find it interesting that he compares the rams to the saints. >> cleaner. >> that is ironic. >> ironic. >> he'll be back.
