coverage of this monumental occasion for our team. matt jablow is hanging out with the fans, but first let's gets to dave owens. >> reporter: derek, i'll tell you what, 30,000 plus showed up at nats park here tonight to witness a little history. and i think they saw it. check that out, huh? nats playoffs 2012. i tell you what, whoever thought those words would be put in the same sentence. let's take a look at some of the video from the game tonight. it was a beautiful night for baseball. i'll tell you, the weather broke. it was absolutely perfect. a lot of guys getting into the act. danny espinosa. doubles to the wall. he scores ian desmond, the birthday boy. nats get a solid performance from ross detwiler as well pitching wise. and we can say it, it's official, nats playoffs here we

go. >> what's the big deal? [ laughing ] >> it was fun, but it's not what i had my eye on. it's a nice step to get here. but, you know, every manager that is leading the division, that's the only thing that matters winning the division. >> reporter: what a night out here. again, 30,000 plus witnessing this history. the first time a dc area baseball team can say they're going to the playoffs in 79 years. much more coming up in sports. we'll hear from the players at about 11:20. back to you new not studio. matt jablow is live in the studio. matt, what is going on with the celebration. >> reporter: anita, as you can well imagine, there were thousands of extremely excited nats fans. just about an hour ago, 10:01 p.m. when the game actually ended. here is a fan's reaction.

[ laughing ]. >> reporter: the playoffs begin in about two weeks. that's when the fun should really start here at nats park. derek. >> all right. thanks a lot, matt. the trip to the major league baseball playoffs has been a long time coming. derek gives us an idea how long it's been. >> they wore ws on their caps back then and they played out of

washington dc, but that's about the only thing that's still the same since the washington big league team then known as the senators made the playoffs. this was back in 1933. it was the great depression. fdr was in the white house. but apparently also out at old griffith stadium. pretty fancy car, huh. everybody else was riding the trolleys. then like now, however, the senators were a bit of a surprise. even though they had three consecutive 90 win seasons, nobody expected they would surpass the mighty yankees to win the pennant but they did. at that time there were only 16 major league teams. so if you were in the playoffs, you were in the world series. now, that meant that our senators only had to win four games to become world champs. they could win only one. the new york baseball giants took them in five, and the washington team would never see the playoff games again until now. and just a reminder, playoff

tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. and you can get them online or buy them by calling 1-888-832 -- or should i say 632-nats. anita. new tonight at 11:00, locked up for a crime he didn't commit. now a man from arlington is free after spending two years behind bars following a wrongful conviction. ken molestina is here to tell us how the release came in the nick of time. >> reporter: a native from leon was days away from being deported and then after two years of appealing his conviction, it was finally overturned. today we were there for the emotional reunion with his friends and family. >> reporter: hugs, cheers and handful of loved ones greeted malika after sitting behind bars for two years. the 22 is now home. >> it's been a long ride for me, but i'm thankful. i thank god. >> reporter: it was in 2009 when he was arrested following

an armed robbery at a shopping center in lincolnia. he was riding his bicycle near the crime scene when the victim pointed him out and accused him of the crime. he was arrested and convicted. >> i had all kind of pressure on me, but i also had people that believe in me that know that i was innocent and i didn't do this. >> reporter: it was his alibi and sloppy work on the prosecution that finally led to the judge overturning his conviction. >> it's important because he spent two years in jail for something he didn't do. >> reporter: lawyers from the mcgier and woods firm game to his rescue. they provided pro bono work. >> we're so excited that he's going to get to continue on with his life and accelerate and do the things that he's wanted to do. >> reporter: his adopted father took him in after fleeing a civil war in his native country. he isn't upset, just grateful that all worked out before immigration authorities sent him back to a country he had escaped

from. >> i have some good people around me. i'm thankful and grateful for that. i'm still here in the u.s.. >> reporter: he says he's now going to work on getting his u.s. citizenship and on starting college. anita. >> what a great outcome. thank you, ken. a deaf woman is attacked near a metro stop, and tonight that suspect is still out there. it happened over the weekend near the rosslyn metro station. the woman was trying to get a cab when she was grabbed and pulled into an alley by the suspect. she fought back, biting the man's hand, after traumatizing the victim, attacker robbed her of $45. investigators are looking at surveillance cameras in the area hoping to identify their suspect. caught on tape, a less than courteous exchange between a metro bus driver and a wtop reporter. this cell phone video shows him confronting the driver who won't show her nametag and refuses to be identified. according to the man, he was trying to parallel park when she

rushed up and flashed him a lewd gesture. >> the vast majority of our bus drivers are courteous and provide good service. there are some that do not do that and are rude which is indicated in that particular issue. we do have cameras on board. we do record things. and if that is on the camera on the film, that will add to what we do with the bus driver. >> now, the driver has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation. coming up later in this newscast, the man that shot that video joins us live in the video to show more of his encounter with miss metro. well, new tonight at 11:00, a bit of a milestone out of afghanistan. the last of the 33,000 u.s. troops ordered there in the surge have left the country. there are still 68,000 american forces in the war zone. remember, the president ordered that surge nearly two years ago because of the escalating violence. and the anti-islamic film produced in this country

triggered another wave of anti-american protest today. this time in pakistan. police fired tear gas at the students trying to keep them away from the u.s. embassy. protestors burned an effigy of president obama in the streets of another city. they call the film blasphemous. meantime one of the actors is suing the film maker for fraud saying she was tricked. >> what was your understanding about what the film was about? >> when i was originally asked about the film, the name of the film was desert warriors and it was supposed to be based on how things were two thousand years ago. muslims or mohammed was never mentioned. >> garcia says she's been getting death threats. a judge denies her request to take down the film. the space shuttle endeavour is almost to its final home.

a springfield man is headed to prison for posing online as a teenage girl to get young boys to send him dirty pictures. his name is faisal hashime. he was busted after sending some of those photos to an undercover agent. he will be sent ebsed in december. and -- sentenced in december. and the suspect in the colorado movie massacre is back in court. he has a brand new look. remember how he had the bright orange hair and daced and looking around. now he has short brown hair and he was smiling and glancing around the room. they gave up effort to get access to a notebook he sent to a therapist. homes is accused of killing 12 people and wounding dozens of others during a midnight showing of the latest batman movie. in tonight's health alert, marijuana could be good for

fighting cancer. scientists say a compound derived from marijuana could stop cancer from spreading. they believe it could help breast, brain and prostate cancer patients. it's been tested in the lab as well as on animals and scientists are awaiting the government go ahead to start human trials. every thursday we pulled a previous food inspection records from dc, alexandria, fairfax, loudoun, arlington and montgomery county looking for allegations. >> so tonight 9 wants to know russ ptacek found montgomery county got one suspension after another. >> reporter: regardless of how nice the store manager, ignorance of the law is no excuse. and when you violate regulations designed to keep diners safe, you risk being shut down. that's what happened inside this quizno's franchise on north frederick in gaithersburg. this is the manager. >> just because we didn't have hot water. >> reporter: she didn't know experts say hot water is a key

[ laughing ] >> he has milkshakes and power bars. all right. 75 today we're looking at a nice weekend but i did tweak a couple of things, so get ready, especially you over there. the bike rider. the michael and son weather cam, 75 was the high. we're down to 65 downtown. dew points, mid 50s. that's not bad. it was in the 40s last night. so it's not going to be as cold tonight. winds out of the south. pressure steady at 30.10 inches of mercury. here is a look at the radar and you see a couple showers north of pittsburgh and a couple of showers around cleveland up towards detroit. this is one reason i put the slight chance of a shower in tomorrow evening north and west of town. not downtown, but places like frederick and hagerstown and maybe even winchester could see a quick shower. in fact, here is a look at our future cast. maybe a sprinkle in hagerstown. just be advised martinsburg, maybe winchester, a quick sprinkle and that's it.

nothing in the immediate metro area. i have not changed that at all. and that's the first part of the front that kind of just lags to the west of us. the rest of it goes through on saturday night. our last full day of summer is tomorrow. it's going to feel more like summer actually. a cool start and a warm finish. great for high school football pretty much across the board. you'll not need a sweatshirt if you attend the games. even warmer on saturday. i boosted the temps on saturday just a little bit. so overnight, clear to partly cloudy. not as chilly but cool. open the windows. 52 to about 60. winds out of the southeast at 10. by morning, mostly sunny and pleasant. a cool but not a chilly start. 50s and 60s as opposed to 40s and 50s. you know, dulles was in the 40s this morning. that was the fifth time out of the last 10 days the burbs have been in the 40s and it was 54 this morning at nashville. that's as cool as we've been since mid may. by afternoon, great way to finish the season and the week. pleasantly warm. high temperatures low 80s. winds out of the southeast at

to stop and wait for me to do that. she tooted the horn. i looked over my shoulder and she flips me the bird as she goes by. >> and you actually dough what so many of us have wanted to do. you know where she's going to be stopping, it's close to wtop and you go and confront her on the bus. >> i do. and that's when the videotape picks up. i pull out my phone. very clearly i have my phone up and everybody knows it's the international sign of you're on candid camera light now. >> right. >> and i know no one likes to have a camera put in her face. i asked her, hey, was there something you wanted to say with me. that's where she said you heard me, i said it. and then i asked her name and she covered up the nametag and then eventually takes the nametag off. and then closes the door on the bus and takes off with me inside. that was actually the part i was not actually expecting to happen. >> she would start driving away. >> right. >> and when did she say you could get off? >> the next stop. she says the next time she had a stop she would pull over. and she did. it was a couple blocks away. and i got off and i walked back.

>> okay. now, any response so far from metro about this? >> well, immediately, you know, i sent an e-mail into metro. they responded to me immediately. a supervisor met her along her route. within an hour, i had an e-mail from metro saying she had been taken out of service that afternoon. metro is subsequently put out a statement saying she is on administrative leave and a spokesperson from metro had i think the best line where he said they're reviewing the tape but clearly she's not going to win the reward for miss metro. today we get another glimpse of the most talked about baby in town, the little panda at the national zoo. watch closely as the mom carefully picks up the squealing cub in her mouth. did you see it? >> yes. >> you can hear it, for sure. she puts it on the ground and starts grooming it. zookeepers say mom is being great. always tending to the cub when it squawks. isn't it crazy that it squawks. >> it's crazy. >> i love it. >> what noise does a grown up panda makes? >> we have to go.
