the first in person vote for campaign 2012 will be cast today. two states begin early voting. early voting accounted for a record 30% of all votes cast in the 2008 election. meanwhile both presidential candidates will be looking for votes in key battleground states today. program is in virginia, mitt romney is in nevada. he has a new battle cry. he's accusing the president of surrendering his ability to change washington. >> reporter: mitt romney jumped all over this comment the president made on thursday about changing washington. he's hoping to get his campaign back on track and try to convince voters that he has what it takes to end the partisanship in washington. problem shared a plate of fries with young voters while talking about student loans in south florida. mitt romney talked medicare in

sarasota. >> i hope the people in florida understand this. he cut medicare by $716 billion. >> reporter: two contrasting images in two parts of the state, each with the same goal. florida's 29 electoral votes. but something president obama said during a candidate's forum on univision through the most attention. >> you can't change from washington from the inside you can only change it from the outside. that's how i got elected. that's how health care got done because we mobilized the american people to speak out. >> reporter: mitt romney was quick to jump on that. >> president obama threw in the white flash flooding surrender again. he said he can't change washington from inside. he can only change it from outside. we'll give him that change in november. >> reporter: after campaigning during the day both candidates spent the evening in florida

fundraising. and new campaign finance reports out this morning show the president has gained the lead in the money race. president obama out raised and out spent mitt romney in august, all tolled he entered the final three months of the campaign with $86 million left to spend. romney raised $67 million and spent about the same but owes $15 million on a loan the campaign took out last month, leaving $35 million at the start of september. president obama spent dollars 66 million on tv advertising. and in the two battleground states on tap for today, mitt romney in nevada and the president in virginia. the race remains very close. >> thank you very much. susan mcginnis in washington. also at that forum in florida the president faced tough questions on immigration reform. the moderator accused the president of not keeping a promise made during the 2008

campaign. mr. obama accepted responsibility but also blamed republicans. >> what we could not get was a single republican including the 20 who had previously voted for comprehensive immigration reform to step up and say we'll work with you. >> yesterday the republicaa bild a bill on visa for foreigners. muslims are gearing up for another day of protest. obama administration official tells cbs news, quote, we hope we can get through the day without serious violence. fact stan has declared today a day of love for the prophet and urging people to protest peacefully while tunisia has banned all protests today. france closed embassies in 20 muslim countries. and in pakistan there's a 30

second television ad condemning that anti-islam video. since our founding the united states has been a nation to respect all faiths. we reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. >> protests have already begun this morning in islamabad. yesterday police had to use tear gas to disperse a mass protest outside of the u.s. embassy there. a provocative advertisement that equates muslim radicals with savages begins on monday. the ad ran on city bus in san francisco. it reads in any war between the civilized man and savage support the civilized man. a blogger is behind the ads. a judge has ruled the ads can run. >> the obama administration says an investigative panel will look into the attack on the u.s.

consulate in libya. the attack that killed christopher stevens was a terrorist attack. >> reporter: at a solemn memorial service, libya's president paid his respects to ambassador christopher stevens. u.s. deputy secretary of state william burns had earlier flown into the capital under tight security. behind-the-scenes an fbi team is preparing to fly to benghazi to investigate the attack. the compound behind these walls is the major crime scene but any evidence left inside will have been badly contaminated by looters and curious local people who flooded in after the attack. here's what eyewitnesss, officials and libyan commanders in charge that night have told us. sometime around 9:30 p.m. about 70 armed men attacked the consulate's main gates with guns and heavy weapons.

they then stormed in, overwhelming local and american security. with all four buildings on fire the libyan government ordered a local militia to the rescue. that militia helped to ferry 31 americans and the body of sean smith out the back gate in armored cars to a house a mile away rented by the u.s. government. shortly afterwards it too came under fierce attack. what we still don't know is how back at the compound ambassador stevens got separated from his security detail only to be found dead or dying just after midnight by the crowd. suspicions for the attack have focused on a powerful islamic militia, ansar al sharia, so powerful our questions at the ministry made them nervous. >> your going to catch the guys who did this or are they too strong for you? no he admitted we don't have

enough power to catch them. maybe not. but as far as the u.s. government is concerned doing nothing is not an option. the libyans know they have neither the technology nor the expertise to conduct a credible forensic investigation, so they are waiting for the fbi team to show up, they hope within the next two or three days. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, benghazi. >> funeral services were held in california for former navy s.e.a.l. tyrone woods. woods had been a s.e.a.l. for two decades and working for a private security firm guarding the u.s. consulate. he was 41 years old. the surge of u.s. troops in afghanistan has officially ended. the last of the 33,000 americans sent by president obama to try to beat back the taliban have left the country. 58,000 americans remain in afghanistan, though. they hope to withdraw by 2014. the number of u.s. forces there

peaked at 101,000 last year. the suspect in the colorado theater shooting appeared in court with a new look as prosecutors pressed to move holmes trial forward. >> reporter: shooting suspect james holmes appeared in a courtroom looking different. his bright orange hair is gone and so is his dazed expression. this time he had short brown hair, neatly trimmed beard and mustache and smiled and glanced around the room. during the hearing the prosecutors gave up their efforts to gain a notebook that holmes send to a psychiatrist. the notebook is thought contain details of a violent attack. holmes was a graduate student at the neuroscience program at the university before he with drew days before the shooting. the 4-year-old is charged with 142 count including murder and attempted murder for allegedly opening fire at the opening
