update about jessica ridgeway's case. right now they will not confirm if the body is the missing girl. she disappeared on her walk to school last week. today we are learning new information into how a man was able to go through airport security with a smoke grenade and other weapons in his luggage. federal agents arrested 28-year-old at the los angeles airport during a layover on his way home to boston from japan. they found all these suspicious items in his luggage. officials in south korea say they screened the man's luggage when he made a stop there but found no hazardous materials. u.s. agents say the smoke grenade violates the u.n. regulations for shipping explosives. harris has a detention hearing tomorrow. syria's government is calling turkey's interception of a syrian passenger plane an act of piracy. military jets forced the syrian air flight, which was headed from russia to damascus to land in turkey. turkish forces believe that plane was carrying military equipment to the syrian

apparatus. wbal is reporting it was a grandmother and four children that were killed. one person had to jump from a second story window, and two firefighters were hurt, but are expected to be okay. still not clear at this point how the fire started, but it took fire investigators two hours to knock it down. controversy this morning at a d.c. university. an administrator in charge of diversity on paid leave now after taking a stand on proposed same-sex marriage in maryland. dr. angela mccaskill is the chief diversity officer in northeast d.c. this summer she reportedly signed a petition to reverse maryland's proposed same-sex marriage law. school officials say it is inappropriate given her position. the university president says he is considering what to do next. the neighborhood there is also the focus of a homicide investigation. someone shot and killed a man yesterday afternoon near 8th street northeast, not far from east capital street.

the police chief says an officer a block away found the victim. there is no word, though, on whether he or she spotted the shooter. the school was never locked down even though this took place a block from campus. a d.c. police officer is facing criminal charges in pittsburgh, where police say he threatened a bus driver. officers arrested william anderson ii over the weekend. they say he pulled out his expandable baton and began swinging it when the driver told him he would have to stand or wait for another bus. williams is on leave and in pittsburgh as a grad student at carnegie mellon. today army officials will hear arguments about why the fort hood shooting suspect should keep his beard. a judge told major nadal hasan that he must shave before his court marshall but he charged it because he says it violates its religious rights as a muslim. hasan is accused of killing 13 people at the texas army post in 2009. and the parents of two virginia tech students who were killed in the shooting there

back in 2007 want to take the school's president to court. they're trying to file suit against university president charles w.steiger for wrongful death. 32 people were killed in that shooting. maryland health officials say they're still trying to contact about 1,500 people who may be linked to the meningitis outbreak. that's according to "the baltimore sun" newspaper. at last count, the cdc reported 138 people had fungal meningitis from a contaminated steroid injection. 12 victims have died. one in maryland and one in virginia among them. the steroid shots commonly used the treat back pain came from the new england compounding center in massachusetts. that company has recalled all of its products. doctors say more cases will likely be discovered in the coming weeks. in the day ahead, the dalai lama will visit charlottesville, virginia, to speak about compassionate medicare, part of a larger trip to college towns.
