keep their season going. >> and getting tight. the poll just released that shows mitt romney picking up momentum in key places. we'll have those stories just ahead. first we want to go to the news4 ve desk. >> crews still on the scene of a deadly house fire in east baltimore that has killed five people, including four children. take a look. our chopper is now over the scene. wbal is reporting the grandmother and four children were killed. you can see a look at that aerial shot. you can see the apparatus as well as some flashing lights. we know that a man had to jump from a second story window. at one point a firefighter fell through the floor and two firefighters received minor injuries. investigators still not clear how the fire started. thank you. 6:00 a.m., and it is just 48 degrees out there. a chilly start to our day. we have a big baseball game today at nats park. we'll know if it's going to warm up for the baseball game.

traveling along i-66, have a situation there. heading eastbound, had a multi-vehicle crash at 28. that crash has moved to the shoulder lane, but you're still seeing delays. i'm going to give you a live look as you head past the bypass. heavy on the brakes. very slow, these delays continue all the way to 28. once you pass 28, you're looking pretty good. this time at fairfax county parkway, your travel lanes are open here and heading to the beltway, a nice travel speed. that drive will take you 11 minutes and you're driving about 57 miles per hour. i'm back in ten. the nationals' historic season comes down to today. win and their season continues. lose and it is all over. the nats got blown out yesterday in their first home game of the postseason. the st. louis cardinals won 8-0, and that gave the world series champions a 2-1 game lead in the national league division series. the nats may have their backs to the wall, but they're confident they can overcome this hole.

games to one lead in the series. mitt romney is taking a break from the campaign trail today while the president will be in orida, one of three swing state where is he seems to be losing some ground. a new poll by nbc news, marist, and "the wall street journal" shows major gains by romney in florida, ohio, and virginia. in perhaps the most important of the three, virginia, romney now leads the president 48% to 47%, a three-point swing from last week. in ohio, the president still leads, but romney gained two points since last week to shrink the gap. and in florida, it is just a one-point lead for the president 48-47. mitt romney is clarifying his stance on abortion. the republican presidential candidate detailed his plans on the issue if elected. >> i think i've said time and again i'm a pro life candidate and i'll be a pro life president. the actions i'll take immediately are to remove funding for planned parenthood.

it will not be part of my budget. >> earlier this week, romney told "the des moines register" that if elected he would not pursue abortion related legislation. expect an aggressive vice presidential debate tonight. vice president joe biden and republican challenger paul ryan faced off at center college in kentucky. it will be the only debate between the two and will cover both foreign and domestic issues. analysts say the pressure is on paul ryan to maintain romney's momentum after last week's debate. joe biden's mission is to get the momentum back. debate coverage on nbc 4 begins tonight at 9:00 followed by news4 at 11:00. we'll get more answers about the death of a giant panda cub at the national zoo. the cub lived for six days before it died late last month. zoo keepers now believe the panda was a female. a preliminary report showed the cub had liver abnormalities and fluid in its abdomen. the news conference starts at 10:00 a.m., we'll be there. look for the latest at

nbcwashington.com. hikers and bikers will see more police patrols on the popular trail in montgomery county after several violent attacks there. police say two attacks on capital crescent trail may be linked. they say a teenager grabbed two other teens on september 29th in the wisconsin avenue tunnel in bethesda and tried to rob them. on friday, police arrested a 16-year-old from rockville in the case. they believe the attack may be linked to a robbery in the same tunnel that happened back in july. >> i use it a lot. my girlfriend uses it to run on. she's like a young single girl kind of running early morning, late evening, so yeah, that's pretty concerning. >> police made at least one arrest in another attack that happened in july. they do not believe it's related to the other attacks on the trail. another case this morning for police as they investigate who's been fondling women in fairfax county. a woman reported being groped as she walked on cumberland drive

break news at the live desk. masked gunmen have killed a u.s. employee at the embassy in yemen. the attacker was on a motorcycle. the victim headed an embassy security team. right now a source telling nbc news this has the hallmarks of an al qaeda style attack. more information as we get it from the live desk. you may want to find out who is riding along with your teen when he or she gets behind the wheel. the survey by aaa shows that risky behavior by 16 and 17-year-old drivers increases when other teens are in the car. speeding, late night driving and alcohol use all increase between 5% and 18% when two or more teens were driving in a car with a young driver. aaa says they want to see stricter limits on who can ride with teens when they first get their license. car crashes are the leading cause of death among teens.

total strangers took action to save a woman in a crash. dash cam video shows the fiery scene there. 21-year-old cameron heard the screams from his home and rushed to help. we understand that everyone did make it out alive. one elderly couple, though, is in critical condition this morning. new this morning, rescuers pulled a construction worker out alive 13 hours after a deadly garage collapse in miami. in order to free him, the crews had to amputate the worker's leg. he was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition. a five-story garage at the miami-dade community college collapsed yesterday afternoon, killing two workers and injuring eight others. searchers are still on the scene looking for one person. the campus is closed for the rest of the week. in about two hours, we'll find out more about the body found a few miles from where a 10-year-old girl was reported missing. police in colorado will give an

update about jessica ridgeway's case. right now they will not confirm if the body is the missing girl. she disappeared on her walk to school last week. today we are learning new information into how a man was able to go through airport security with a smoke grenade and other weapons in his luggage. federal agents arrested 28-year-old at the los angeles airport during a layover on his way home to boston from japan. they found all these suspicious items in his luggage. officials in south korea say they screened the man's luggage when he made a stop there but found no hazardous materials. u.s. agents say the smoke grenade violates the u.n. regulations for shipping explosives. harris has a detention hearing tomorrow. syria's government is calling turkey's interception of a syrian passenger plane an act of piracy. military jets forced the syrian air flight, which was headed from russia to damascus to land in turkey. turkish forces believe that plane was carrying military equipment to the syrian

president's regime. troops seized the plane's cargo but won't say what they found. the incident heightens the attentions between syria and turkey. fuelled from start to finish by doping. that's what a full report from the u.s. anti-doping agency says about lance armstrong's career. the more than 1,000-page report contains testimony from 11 former teammates. they say armstrong not only took human growth hormone, testosterone and received blood transfusions but forced teammates to dope as well. the report also details how riders avoided being caught. usada is hoping the report brings change to the sport. >> the u.s. postal service's pro cycling team ran the most sophisticated professionalized and successful drug program that we've ever seen. >> everybody knows that he was the best. and everybody knows he won because he was the best. >> armstrong has not commented

much cooler here. what's going on with traffic? >> well, the usual delays on i-95, unfortunately. let's take a look if you're traveling northbound i-95. southbound, no issues. nice and clear. northbound, delays really start as you travel in the dale city area. and then it's just stop and go for you. here's a look at prince william parkway. south looks good. travel speed as you make your way from prince william parkway to the beltway, you're under speed, about 34 miles per hour, that drive taking 22 minutes. 395 starting to see delays as well. the bulk of your delays from the beltway to about seminary road, but it is starting to slowdown to the 14th street bridge. you're sluggish and that drive is going to take you about 15 minutes to get from the beltway to the 14th street bridge. let's check in with melissa in the live desk with some breaking news. >> right now baltimore firefighters are still combing through the rubble after a house fire tha killed five people, including four children. take a look. our chopper was over the scene just a little while ago. you can see the lights and

apparatus. wbal is reporting it was a grandmother and four children that were killed. one person had to jump from a second story window, and two firefighters were hurt, but are expected to be okay. still not clear at this point how the fire started, but it took fire investigators two hours to knock it down. controversy this morning at a d.c. university. an administrator in charge of diversity on paid leave now after taking a stand on proposed same-sex marriage in maryland. dr. angela mccaskill is the chief diversity officer in northeast d.c. this summer she reportedly signed a petition to reverse maryland's proposed same-sex marriage law. school officials say it is inappropriate given her position. the university president says he is considering what to do next. the neighborhood there is also the focus of a homicide investigation. someone shot and killed a man yesterday afternoon near 8th street northeast, not far from east capital street.

the police chief says an officer a block away found the victim. there is no word, though, on whether he or she spotted the shooter. the school was never locked down even though this took place a block from campus. a d.c. police officer is facing criminal charges in pittsburgh, where police say he threatened a bus driver. officers arrested william anderson ii over the weekend. they say he pulled out his expandable baton and began swinging it when the driver told him he would have to stand or wait for another bus. williams is on leave and in pittsburgh as a grad student at carnegie mellon. today army officials will hear arguments about why the fort hood shooting suspect should keep his beard. a judge told major nadal hasan that he must shave before his court marshall but he charged it because he says it violates its religious rights as a muslim. hasan is accused of killing 13 people at the texas army post in 2009. and the parents of two virginia tech students who were killed in the shooting there

back in 2007 want to take the school's president to court. they're trying to file suit against university president charles w.steiger for wrongful death. 32 people were killed in that shooting. maryland health officials say they're still trying to contact about 1,500 people who may be linked to the meningitis outbreak. that's according to "the baltimore sun" newspaper. at last count, the cdc reported 138 people had fungal meningitis from a contaminated steroid injection. 12 victims have died. one in maryland and one in virginia among them. the steroid shots commonly used the treat back pain came from the new england compounding center in massachusetts. that company has recalled all of its products. doctors say more cases will likely be discovered in the coming weeks. in the day ahead, the dalai lama will visit charlottesville, virginia, to speak about compassionate medicare, part of a larger trip to college towns.

division series thanks to this 12th inning home run from raul ibanez. that's not the worst part. the o's led heading into the ninth inning. the yankees lead the orioles in the series two games to one. baltimore must win tonight to keep their season alive. mitt romney has enjoyed a boost in several polls from a strong debate performance, but it's a new poll out this morning of voters in swing states that may hold the most encouraging news for the former governor. the poll by nbc news, marist, and "wall street journal" shows romney closing the gap in three states. ohio, florida, and right here in virginia. it is virginia that is considered one of the most important states of this election where romney is really gaining some ground. he now leads the president there 48% to 47% that. is a three-point swing from last week when he trailed by two points in. ohio is where we're also seeing some new numbers out this morning. the president still leads there, though. romney has gained two points in

the last week to shrink the advantage to 51-45 right now. the president also leading in florida this morning, but only by one percentage point, well within the margin of error for this poll. the only good news for the president here, it is the same lead he held during last week's poll. mitt romney is elaborating his position on abortion. during a campaign stop in ohio, the republican presidential candidate detailed his plans on the issue if elected. >> i am a pro life candidate. i'll be a pro life president. the actions i'll take immediately are to remove funding for planned parenthood. it will not be part of my budget. >> earlier this week, romney told "the des moines register" that if elected he would not pursue abortion related legislation. campaign aides say romney is trying to cover up his pog and would support banning all abortions. romney's oldest son tag romney

will kick off a bus tour and then head towards charlottesville. his fourth son ben will host a debate watch party in arlington. tonight is the first and only vice presidential debate. vice president joe biden and republican challenger paul ryan face off at center college in kentucky. ryan has reportedly done three mock debates in preparation for tonight. the vice president has studied ryan's book, speeches and budget plan. analysts say viewers will watch for visual cues. our debate coverage begins at 8:00. a family in frederick county says they may press charges because their teenaged son keeps getting bullied. preston diener was bullied earlier this week. last week diener was suspended from brunswick high school for fighting back against bullies in gym class. as a result he was not allowed to go to homecoming. his family and friends are hosting an anti-bullying homecoming dance this friday. about 150 people are expected to

on friday, police arrested a 16-year-old from rockville in the case. they believe the attack may be linked to a robbery in the same tunnel that happened in july. >> i mean, i use it a lot. my girlfriend uses it to run on. and she's like a young single girl kind of running early morning, late evening. so yeah, it's pretty concerning. >> police made at least one arrest in another attack that happened in july. they do not believe it is related to the other attacks on the trail. as police investigate behind who's behind a series of gropings, there's now another reported incident. yesterday a 25-year-old woman reported being groped in springfield. she is the sixth person to report such an incident in the last month. investigators think there could be more. for system of you, this will be a blast from the past. a once popular practice for coca-cola fans is going away. courtney reagan is live with that. i'm a little sad about this, courtney. >> i know. it's end of an era for coca-cola
