70 in manassas. 70 degrees in culpepper. a bit of the cooler air arrives across parts of northern and western maryland. rain showers northern montgomery, maryland and more showers out to the blue ridge. once you get south of the winchester area, front royal. we'll keep an eye on this over the next couple hours. nothing all that heavy or severe. sometimes a little bit of rain can slow things down on the beltway. you may want to have a little extra travel time built into the commute. it is victory monday out at redskins park today after the record-setting performance by rookie quarterback robert griffin iii. rg3 set the redskins record for rushing touchdowns for a quarterback with that spe spectacular 73-yard rush to the end zone. coach mike shanahan said it's that kind of athleticism that will lead to more wins.

will have more on how security video could be a key part of the investigation. a police beating allegedly started over a song and dance. that's the testimony we're hearing today in the trial of two prince george's county police officers. they're accused of assaulting a university of maryland student jack mckenna after a basketball game against duke back in 2010. cell phone video shows the incident. today a friend and witness testified that mckenna was only skipping and singing when police approached him. chris gordon is in the courtroom and will have more on what the defense is saying coming up at 5:00. a coalition of religious groups is calling on metro now to donate money it received from that controversial advertising campaign. the ads contain what many consider are anti-muslim messages. as news4 reports, the coalition is launching an ad campaign of its own. >> reporter: it was a controversial decision made about a u.s. district judge,

left to do it. the hofstra debate could be pivotal. i'm steve handelsman, news4. pizza hut is having second thoughts about a promotional stunt that involves this week's presidential debate. the debate is a townhall format with questionsrom the public. pizza hut announced last week it would offer free pies for life to the person willing to ask president obama and mitt romney whether they prefer sausage or pepperoni on their pizza. the pizza chain was widely panned for making light of presidential politics. now the company says it will run the contest online and ask its customers rather than the candidates what topping they prefer. the captain of the costa concordia was back in court for a pretrial hearing. he's accused of running that ship aground, killing 32 people back in january. the hearings will continue through the week. he'll be learned what he will be charged with, and if charged and

convicted he could face life in prison. shot by the taliban, because she wanted an education. there is news today about that courageous young teen attacked in pakistan. now she's been rushed to the united states kingdom for treatment. but doctors say that even if she survives, she'll need prolonged care. >> reporter: school girl malala yousafzai was shot and now doctors from around the world fight to save her. rushed from the hospital in pakistan, flying to the uk for specialist treatment for her head injury. a 14-year-old girl attacked because she fought for young girls to be educated and independent. >> there has been a wave of public revulsion in pakistan and around the world for this attempt to obstruct the education of a young generation. >> reporter: she was targeted by the taliban, but the attackers turned many against them. thousands rallied in her support this weekend.

taylor promptly promised him she would pay for everything and apologized profusely. a lot of people might say, you can hit my car anytime. >> she can probably afford it. >> i would say. >> she can replace my vw with a ferrari any day. >> are you expecting more rain tonight? >> a little more. not a whole lot more. almost everybody is going to get rained on at least one between now and midnight. but rainfall amounts are going to be very widely varied. some places only a few drops. some places only a few tenths of an inch. not a lot of heavy rain on the radar for now. commuters don't want to see much in the way of heavy rain out on the roadway, particularly this time of the day. it is still mild outside. still ahead of the cold front here in washington. winds remain out of the southwest, 14, gusting to 22 miles per hour. once the front goes by, the winds will switch back around to the northwest and cooler and drier air will move back into the area.

that will be in place for much of the upcoming week. temperatures already on the downslide across northern maryland. 53 in frederick right now. winchester, front royal, mid-60s. still near mid-70s near stafford. showers around the next couple of hours here. most of the rain will be ending between about 9:00 and 10:00. i think by midnight, almost every one of the drops should be gone. temperatures slowly trending back down into the 50s at 10:00 tonight. many spots not seeing any rain at all. that's not the case northern montgomery county, far western fairfax. i thought there might be a chance for some isolated severe weather today. now the risk of stronger thunderstorms is down around the outer banks of north carolina. we could still get a few rumbles of thunder out of this and they could produce gusty winds, and maybe a little pea-sized hail. not looking for big severe weather today. that is welcome news. right along 270, brief heavy rain north of gaithersburg,

headed out to the olney area. be on the lookout along the 270 corridor. to the west here, northern fauquier county, north of marshall, west of des plaines, virginia, these showers are generally trending off to the east. not a lot of rain here. but just right on the capital beltway between now and 7:00, you may want to slow down just a touch. so some thunder around here for the next couple of hours. by 9:30, 10:00, the cold front moving right on by. we'll clear out very quickly. we should end up with decent amounts of sunshine early on tomorrow. high pressure builds in for the rest of the week, seasonably cool nights. but a mild and dry pattern coming for much of the upcoming week. and after these rain drops today, that might be it for rain until maybe friday of this week. so, for overnight tonight, skies clearing out after midnight. scattered hit-and-miss showers. mostly in the upper 40s to

welcome back, everybody, at 4:30. i'm jim handly. >> i'm barbara harrison. electronic tracking devices are used in all aspects of our daily lives today. but from highway tolls and stores, wait until you hear this one. >> one of the largest school districts in texas is requiring its students to wear tracking chips at school. as nbc's janet shandling reports, the idea is raising more than a few eyebrows. >> reporter: what kids wear to school is often a hot topic for teenagers. but here in san antonio, students are buzzing about a small item they're being forced

to wear. it's a student i.d. bag that allows the school to instantly locate any students in the building. >> i think it's good, becau ifff you're not in the classroom, they could search for you. >> reporter: not only do these cards help locate students on campus, they also help count them, and counting students is how schools make money. >> when we're looking for students that werecampus, but marked absent, our secretary can look on her web page and see wh theat. >> rorter: for every student counted during attendance, the state pays north side about $30 a day. the district is losing about $2 million a year because of poor attendance reporting. the schools turned to technology to improve the numbers. >> the revenues that are generated by locating kids who are not answering present, but in the building, in their counselor's office, in the cafeteria, hallway, gym, et cetera, if we can show in fact theyere at school, then we can count them present. >> reporter: but not everyone has the schoo. spir. and some students are refusing

tonight? >> yes and no. we'll clear out tonight, but that may not be until after midnight. right into the heart of montgomery county, there's interstate 270 right there. raining from rockville to gaithersburg, northbound in the upper parts of montgomery. these rain drops are moving out towards olney. be on the lookout for slowed travel along 270. and here's interstate 66 out through the plains and marshall, northern fauquier county. these showers also going eastbound. so northern fauquier county, leesburg, western fairfax, rin drops also headed to you. another check on the seven-day in a few minutes. a new jersey lawmaker wants to require dog owners to keep their pets in special seat belts in the car. now a safety organization has crash tested those protection harnesses, using a test dummy dog. the group couldn't believe the results. >> reporter: pet harnesses, seat

belts for dogs, designed to keep our best friends safe while we chauffeur them around. there are dozens of dog safety products on the market. lawmakers in new jersey are even considering a bill to require a car restraint for rover. >> people tend to treat their animals like members of their family. why don't they treat them like that in the car. >> reporter: while harnesses may give pet owners peace of mind, a new study suggests they may not offer much actual protection. >> it was just astounding what we saw. >> reporter: lindsey founded the center for pet safety in 2011, after getting into a car accident while traveling with her dog. the harness failed, and maggie suffered spinal injuries. so she decided to test four of the strongest dog harnesses on the market. applying the same federal motor vehicle safety standards for testing a child seat. she and her team simulated a 30-mile-per-hour collision. the results? every single harness failed.

in the first test, the harness held up, but provided too much slack. the dummy dog rocketed forward crashing into the back of the test match. the results would get far worse. in two of the tests, the harnesses snapped completely, sending the test dog flying through the air, totally unprotected. becoming a dangerous projectile. it's estimated in a crash at 30 miles per hour, a tiny 10-pound dog will exert 300 pounds of pressure. in the fourth test, a devastating result. the harness slid up to the test dog's neck upon impact. >> i don't think there's any doubt that those dogs would have been severely injured, if not fatally injured. >> reporter: walco doesn't identify the manufacturers in the test because she says they're not doing anything wrong. there are no existing safety standards in place for dog harnesses. something the center for pet safety is working to change. so that road trips are safer for all passengers, including the four-legged ones.

>> my dog was injured by one of these products. and i felt this is inexcusable. this should not happen. the pets that we love, they need real protection. >> the american pet products association represents harness manufacturers and in response to walco's findings, released this statement saying in part, there are an increasing number of reported accidents where a pet distracting the driver is being cited as the cause. a pet restraint that merely limits a pet's access and distraction to the driver and limits its motion in the event of an accident is still an improvement over no restraint. coming up, the one thing you can do to make sure your children are better behaved. just one thing is all it takes, huh? also ahead, a daredevil, not felix, this one gets a bigger thrill than he bargained for. the terrifying fall. a story so incredible, it has to be true.

whether a controversial vaccine encourages promiscuity in young girls. it's designed to protect young girls against hpv. it's the leading cause of cervical cancer. some parent groups are concerned the hpv inoculation gives teens the go-ahead to have sex. but researchers at emory university and kaiser say that's not the case. their study finds those who got the vaccine were no more likely to have sex than those who didn't. another study out there today finds sleep may be the way to better behaved kids. they took 7 to 11-year-old students and let them sleep longer per day. those who got an extra 30 minutes of sleep at night were able to control their emotions better, and were more alert in school. those who got less sleep were impulsive and had a short attention span. that can carry over into

skateboarders ran amok through hollywood. seen here in this youtube video, from a frantic driver and passenger caught in the middle of the mayhem. they were throwing bottles while bystanders were shown running for their lives. they had to deployed more than 100 police officers. the commander tells me about 8:45, a group of about 1,500 skaters showed up to watch a free premiere of "break and destroy." the problem is, the theater only holds 600. those reportedly turned away reacted in violence. >> i just saw everybody in the streets, and like it was going crazy. i think somebody tried to open the door. and then somebody saw the door open and everybody started to rush in. >> reporter: that entrance door, along with window displays were destroyed. the caretaker of the theater refused to talk to me, but next door the owner of hollywood tattoo, he said he etched in his shop while vandals etched his
