there was a stabbing. the suspect ran away. the victim taken to the hospital. the injuries described as nonlife-threatening. a short time later, police tracked down the suspect and took him into custody. sources say investigators recovered a knife which they believe was the weapon used in the case. the school sent a letter home to parents explaining the incident. in the school's version, the stabbing happened on school grounds, but outside the school building. as the news spread, so did the concern among parents. >> it's upsetting for the kids. because school becomes very unsafe. and it scares parents. >> it's not good. it affects everybody. >> it's been relatively incident-free, you know, with violence and stuff. >> reporter: and now this? >> i don't know what to say.

i'm really surprised. >> reporter: for something like that to happen in school? >> right, it's very sad. >> reporter: now, the suspect has been identified as shadot kariwally, charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault and possessing a weapon school grounds. live in montgomery county, pat collins, news4. a teenager will now be charged as an adult in a series of armed robberies near the university of university of maryland's college park campus. he was arrested after officers found evidence inside his home. last week there were three robberies in 24 hours near the university view apartments. for some folks who live in manassas, it's a total loss. a fire spread through the stor-all self-storage facility on sudley road last night damaging about 85 units. the three-alarm fire was so intense it required help from firefighters in neighboring

districts. everything he owned was in his unit. >> just memories, pictures, everything, memories from my kids, gone. nothing that you can replace. >> investigators don't know what started the fire and have not released any estimate on damages. the relatives of two virginia hikers missing in montana say they're hopeful the men will be found. neal peckens of herndon and jason hiser of richmond went hiking in montana's glacier national park last week. they were reported missing on friday when they didn't catch their flight home. more than 50 rangers are searching the park's rugged snowy terrain tonight for the men. hiser's mother says she's finding strength in her faith. rainy weather out there today for some of us. and we still could see some more tonight. storm 4 meteorologist doug kammerer joins us with an update. >> you look outside right now, across the city, some areas seeing sunshine. others now starting to see that rain move in. we have thunderstorms, too. currently 70 degrees with winds

out of the south at 9 miles per hour. a few breaks in the clouds, especially east of 95. over the last couple of hours we've seen a few storms develop, loudoun county, montgomery county and now entering howard county and anne arundel. some of these are fairly heavy. the heaviest rain looks like it's in fauquier county and movinging in portions of culpepper and rap a han a county. we'll see a few areas of heavy downpours through the rest of the evening hours. could make things problematic on the commute especially if you're traveling west on 66. we'll talk about what's coming next in my forecast. an important deadline is passing for voters in virginia. tonight it's the last day to register to cast ballots in november. virginia's an important battleground state in the presidential election, and julie carey is at fairfax county government center with the efforts to get people signed up, and to make sure they get out to

the polls. hi, julie. >> reporter: well, the election office on the third floor of the government center has closed for today, so the chance to turn registration forms in there has passed. but they can still be mailed in as long as they're postmarked october 15th. volunteers for both campaigns are working hard to make sure they reach every last virginia voter. >> how are you doing? >> reporter: business was steady in fairfax county election office. some residents tried to beat a deadline for registering to vote. the 727,000 registered so far already tops the number of registered voters in 2008 by some 61,000. part of that is due to population growth. but some may have to do it the motivation of casting ballots in a swing state that could decide the presidential contest. this woman just moved to fairfax from the nonswing state of georgia. >> i'm glad to be here. i want to make the difference as far as obama is concerned. and there in georgia, we

couldn't make a real difference. so we're happy to be here. >> reporter: prince william county, the line today spilled out the door at times. mitt romney's supporter turned in her registration and picked up some for co-workers. >> voting is the best way to be sure however you feel about your country, should count. >> reporter: as would-be voters registered, campaign offices are firing up volunteers for the final get out the vote surge. debby wasserman schultz kicked off a women's phone bank. volunteers are also looking forward to tomorrow night's presidential debate, confident president obama will do better than the first. >> he'll do better. he'll do fine. he's smart. the smartest guy in the room. i'm not worried about him. >> we're getting it done, folks. >> reporter: at the romney campaign office in prince william county, a similar scene, and a pat on the back from gop campaign leaders. they credit volunteers with making 4.5 million voter

contacts in virginia since april. and even though they credit mitt romney's last debate performance for boosting enthusiasm, they are downplaying expectations this time around. >> i don't expect much. i think mitt romney will do a perfectly fine job. but we're really not looking for a technical knockout here. >> reporter: coming up at 6:00, i'll show you the longest line we found in an election office today and what that signifies. julie carey, news4. of course, the second presidential debate in the campaign happens tomorrow night. both candidates are staying largely out of sight, getting ready for that face-off at hofstra university up in new york. president obama preparing in williamsburg, virginia, where he was last seen in public yesterday delivering some pizza pies to some campaign workers. mitt romney, for his part, was seen yesterday after church in massachusetts. tomorrow night's debate is townhall style and format which may change the dynamic. aides are telling the president he needs to get tough.

>> yes, he needs to show he's tougher, needs to push back more. but he doesn't want to come across as a bully. for mitt romney, the number one piece of advice that he's getting is to engage with these questioners. in townhalls he has a tendency to back away when he gets tough questions. >> the race remains very close, which could make the questions asked by the public at the debate all the more important. pizza hut is now tabling a debate related promotional stunt that was widely panned, as inappropriate. pizza hut announced last week it would offer free pies for life to the debategoer who asks president obama or mitt romney whether they prefer pepperoni or sausage on their pizza. critics said the stunt made light of the nation's political proce process. they said now they'll ask the customers rather than the candidates what topping they prefer.

the contest winner will be second at random. in upper montgomery county, officials are urging everyone to avoid the water there. because a toxic substance produced by blue/green algae has been found in the water. the substance can be dangerous and cause liver damage if ingested. montgomery county is asking people with pets to make sure their pets don't swim or drink the water. boating is still allowed at lake meadwood. a mother faces a felony charge for allegedly losing track of her young son for half the weekend. detectives in prince william county say 41-year-old katrina washington mccullo regularly neglects her son. he didn't return home until a family member filed a missing child report yesterday. she's being held on a $2,500 bond. a first look at a new link between the district and

maryland. local leaders showed off plans for the final stretch of the an a kos ta river walk trail, known as the aquatic garden segment will connect 60 miles of trail in maryland and d.c., and bring together bening road with the bladensburg waterfront park. construction is expected to begin next spring. university of maryland students beaten, and it was all caught on video. two police officers take the hot seat as their trial begins. the district already thinking about its plan for snow this winter. and residents are giving their two cents. rg3 cat a bults the redskins to victory.

already getting ready for the winter. >> that's right. today the city released its snow removal operations plan. adam tuss is live in northwest d.c. a few new tools to fight the snow with this year. >> reporter: that's right, doreen. better safe than sorry. that's how the district is going to play this season. how bad will the winter be. last winter we got lucky. what's it going to be like this year? >> i heard it's going to snow a lot. >> reporter: a snowy forecast, the popular pick here in the district. >> we're having a cool fall, which i think is going to get very bad and the winter's going to be horrible. >> reporter: there are predictions that we could see above-average snowfall. you can certainly remember back to snowmageddon, or forget it if it's too painful, one blizzard following the next. but those kinds of storms are rare. here in the d.c. region, the national weather service said normal snowfall for the year is about 14.5 inches. city leaders held a meeting to talk winter weather

preparations. >> up to about 18 to 20 inches of snow, i feel very comfortable about what we can do. it's when you get above that when it becomes a little shaky. >> right. >> reporter: the city does have some new tricks up its sleeve. in addition to new trucks, the city also has new plows for the trucks. these are a mixture of rubber and ceramic that are supposed to be quieter on the city streets, and also supposed to push more snow out of the way. but even on a warm fall day, like today, the thought of snow-covered streets, enough to make people shiver. >> snow is not really my thing. cold weather. >> reporter: you don't want to have to deal with it. >> not at all. >> reporter: jim and doreen, coming up at 6:00, we'll tell you why fighting the snow truly has gone high-tech. reporting live in northwest, adam tuss, news4. all the pictures of snow, and we had, what, 85 degrees? it warmed up, huh? >> well, 70. >> well, it felt like 85.

miles an hour. 70. it feels like 85. to some. as we look through the numbers for the rest of the area, 68 in martinsburg. cooler in gaithersburg because of rain that moved through there. the cool air making its way in across the area. here they are right now, you can see them coming through. we saw pre-frontal moisture ahead of this. now we're seeing the thunderstorms line up with the front itself back toward the west, in through loudoun county, around the lowell area, and down toward the south and east. once again, montgomery county, west of gaithersburg, this will move over 270, and right over i-95. the heaviest storm to the west of warrenton. we'll watch this one move to the east. heads-up in warrenton in the next five to ten minutes. you could at least see some of the thunder and heavier

downpours coming through your area west of prince william county. we'll continue to see these showers and storms move through through the rest of the evening hours. then we start to clear out. notice the showers back to the west. these are actually induced by cold air. so the cold air trying to filter on in here. we're going to see cooler weather move in over the next 12 hours or so. this evening, clouds and showers ending late. i think most of these will move out of here. temperatures 58 to about 68 degrees. tomorrow morning, waking up to cool numbers, but not too cold. 44 in the coolest suburbs, to about 50 in the city. winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 miles an hour. they may be on the breezy side, winds up to 15 miles an hour. breezy earlier tomorrow. temperatures 64 to 69 degrees. once again, we will see those breezy conditions lingering throughout the early afternoon. and then it gets really nice. take a look at wednesday. we get up to 85 again on wednesday with plenty of

sunshine. that's a high of 70 on wednesday. 73 on your thursday. 73 on friday. with just a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm. once thing you don't see there, you don't see any real heavy rain and you also do not see a repeat of what we saw the last couple of days, that really cold air settling on in here. so a pretty nice stretch over the next five to seven days. >> we like doreen's numbers better. >> i'm not the meteorologist so i don't have to be quite as exact, as you do. it felt warm to me out there today. thanks, doug. a drill to prepare people for earthquakes is being held this week, and virginia's governor is hoping you'll sign up. governor bob mcdonald said many people didn't know about earthquake safety when the magnitude 5.8 quake hit louisa county, virginia, in august of last year. it cost tens of millions of dollars in damages. several states including maryland, virginia and the district will join together for the great southeast shakeout. it's scheduled for 10:18 a.m. on the 18th. at that time, you're supposed to

shanahan in the bottom. you know the entire staff is going to point that out today. he's going to get mercilessly mocked for that. >> he was excited. she can't let him go. >> she doesn't want to let him go. i think everybody was ecstatic. we haven't seen a guy this electric in a redskins uniform maybe ever. he had 138 yards rushing. we actually thought that the shanahans would rein him in to protect him just seven days after concussion. he runs the ball 13 times. that 138 yards is the fourth most ever for a quarterback in the nfl. mike shanahan said after the game that when he runs, he's kind of in attack mode, he controls it. that's almost safer than keeping him in the pocket where he could get blindsided, do you agree with that? >> he sees where it's coming from. i think that's a bonus for him. any hit is a hit on a quarterback. anytime, you can take the hit that causes a problem. but he's just such an effective

runner. when you come up with a game plan at the beginning of the week of what is going to work, you have to go with your best players and what's going to work. they knew, i think, early on he was going to be able to play. they had him in, they had him ready. they felt very confident with the way he felt. and playing him. and got the most out of the game plan and the most out of their quarterback. >> for this offense to be effective, does robert griffin iii have to run the ball? >> to be effective in the way they want it to be, i think he absolutely has to run the ball. i think he can transition more into a pocket passer. but designing the option plays, designing the run plays, giving him an opportunity to do it that way is more effective, in my opinion, than having a quarterback drop back like michael vick used to do and just run free. it's actually designed, he knows where he's going, and i think that's less of a risk. i think it also builds confidence. and a step further, it gives him such an ability to have the play

fast forward through the headlines. the stabbing at a high school in silver spring this morning sent one student to the hospital and the other to jail. police tell us a northwood high school student stabbed another with a knife. the two had reportedly been in an argument last week. the victim is expected to be okay. investigators are looking for the cause of a fire at the stor-all storage facility on sudley road in prince william county. more than 80 units were damaged

or destroyed. president obama, mitt romney behind closed doors on the eve of the big debate tomorrow, townhall style, at hofstra university in new york. the polls show the race is extremely close at this point. doug? >> looking at a few showers and even a couple of thunderstorms out there. let's look right now at doppler radar, and you can see where the showers are as they continue to make their way through the region, in through portions of southern maryland. one area you notice, this is prince george's county and anne arundel county around the green belt, chevrolet area. as you move to the south and west, the strongest storm right now close to warrenton area. seeing very heavy rain and lightning and thunder, too. i'll show you where the storms go next in the forecast. a university of maryland student allegedly beaten by police for skipping and singing after a basketball game, that's what we're hearing in the trial of two officers accused in an assault. news4's chris gordon has been in

the courtroom all day and joins us live with more today. >> reporter: john mcken ka said he was going to celebrate with friends in college park. his memory is foggy that night. he remembers being hit with a shield and loaded into a police wagon. it appears the best evidence in this assault trial against two police officers may be cell phone video taken by students, and others that night. na thon cole testified he was just ten feet from fellow student jack mckenna when he saw police strike mcken a over and over again. >> i lost sleep over it. >> reporter: as the trial opened, the prosecutors and officers reginald baker and harrison abused their power and violated the law. mckenna suffered massive injuries to his head and body, after maryland's basketball

victory over duke march 3rd of 2010. they said he was skipping, dancing and singing as he approached police. but the defense said it wasn't a celebration, it was a riot in the streets. that there were fires and property damage. that the police civil disturbance unit was called in to arrest law breakers, and that it was a lawful use of force for officers' safety. they say student jack mckenna was waving his fists as he approached the police line and tried to throw a punch. the defense called him yippee skippy. >> there was clearly nothing in his hands. i think that's -- that's absolutely ridiculous. >> reporter: now, defense lawyers for the police officers say that they thought mckenna was insigkrigciting a riot and

drunk. he says he was not drunk. these two officers face assault charges, first and second-degree assault, plus misconduct. that's the latest from the prince george's county circuit court live. a large group of prominent religious leaders is speaking out today. they want metro to do something with the money generated from some controversial advertising. the group wants metro to donate the money from these ads to charity. they went up last week at four metro stations. a judge gave the okay saying the ads are protected as free speech. but many religious leaders in the community don't agree. >> everything that is protected is not productive. and i don't find these ads to be productive. i find them to be insulting. >> the coalition is now sponsoring ads of its own. they're scheduled to go up today at glenmont and woodley park

stations. triggering an advertising slugfest. groups for and against expanded gambling in the state are spending record bucks on media campaigns. tracee wilkins explains where all the ad dollars are going. >> reporter: you've seen the ads for and against question 7. the bill proposing the expansion of gambling in maryland, and a new casino for prince george's. here's how much it's all cost. for maryland jobs and schools, supports gambling, and has spent $19.1 million. mgm contributed 98% of that. get the facts, vote no on 7, has put $21.6 million into its campaign, with all of that money coming from penn national gaming. the casino owners who stand to lose customers if prince george's gets the casino. that equals $40.7 million,

making it the most expensive campaign in maryland's history, outspending even gubernatorial races. >> we're advertising. we're putting money into efforts everywhere. >> reporter: according to financial reports filed with the maryland board of elections, the washington redskins was paid $450,000 by the committee supporting gambling expansion. soon after, the redskins released a statement that said in part, we see it as our obligation to speak out and support major economic development initiatives. we believe question 7 represents a tremendous opportunity for prince george's county. the latest round of ads supporting question 7 feature former red skin la bar aaronton. the committee said the nearly half a million dollars given to the redskins is for advertising. although it wasn't labeled as such in the financial report. >> this was not a payment to the redskins in exchange for -- >> absolutely not.

in some cases may even get their home back. >> we were able to do the american dream. we worked hard. and we made it. and now they're saying get out. >> reporter: he and his wife have lived in their home for 12 years, making monthly mortgage payments. but henry williams became ill, had kidney surgery, and was laid off from his job. then the williams say the mortgage payments became impossible to make. >> when we got in a position where things weren't looking good, we cried out for help. >> reporter: their lender modified the williams' monthly payments, but just when they thought they were caught up, they were told they were behind in payments. >> when i paid the october payment, they said that was the september payment. when i paid november payment, they said it was going to the october payment. it went on and on. >> reporter: shortly after that the williams were being foreclosed on. >> they said in 30 days you have to be gone. >> reporter: but could their lender have made a mistake.

that's just what the federal programmed called the independent foreclosure review wants to know. and the feds think so many homeowners that are victims of lender mistakes, it has extended the deadline to apply for review until december 31st. >> a homeowner currently behind in your mortgage? >> reporter: figuring the ins and outs of foreclosure is overwhelming. so people like the williams come here to housing counseling services. a hud approved nonprofit agency that offers free help. ronald clarkson said homeowners can get money back. >> there could be a person who lost maybe $1,000 as a result of the process, or lost their home worth a couple hundred thousand dollars. people are getting checks in the mail as a result of this free process. >> reporter: foreclosure review is available to anyone who was involved in the foreclosure process between january 1st, 2009, and december 31st, 2010. >> we would rather people come forward and let us help them

sort out whether they qualify or not. >> reporter: it's free, so if someone tries to charge you for help it's likely a scam. >> there are some scammers out there who are copying the procedures that the independent foreclosure review process. >> reporter: the williams fell victim after a company promised to reduce their payments and get their house back. >> we were really at a point of tears. and their timing just took advantage of our depression. they said, unpack your stuff. you will have your home. >> reporter: the williams sent a cashier's check for $1,500, and received nothing in return. now they're counting down the days until they have to leave their home. >> we're tax paying people, we're good people, and we do need somebody to be concerned about what happens to us. >> so the williams case is still pending. if you want a list of the hud approved housing counseling services and more information on that independent review, simply

look back to the north and west of d.c., 61 in gaithersburg, 61 in leesburg. south and east, we're still on the warmer side. 70 in camp springs. manassas at 72. once again, that number will be changing, as the cooler air is moving in. look where the rain is right now. here's the rain we're looking at on the tower cam here, looking across the city in through portions of prince george's county. this is right across bowie and eventually to the river. this area of rain down here had thunder associated with it earlier near warrenton. don't see any lightning there. manassas seeing heavy downpours. this is around the clifton area in the next 15 to 20 minutes. warrenton, heads up, you're still seeing some fairly heavy

my kail salahi. he gave her an 11-carat diamond ring. the american civil liberties union filed suit against morgan stanley today claiming racial discrimination. the suit claims the financial giant encouraged a now bankrupt company to target more african-american home buyers with loans that had a strong possibility of foreclosure and high costs. the aclu said morgan stanley then received large fees from s selling these homes to investors. a funeral will be held tomorrow in pennsylvania for former senator arlen specter. specter died yesterday after a long battle with cancer. the former senator was known for his pugnacious style and moderate views. specter was one of just three republicans to vote for president obama's economic stimulus bill. he then moved from the republican party to the democratic party in 2009.

now it is already one of the most moments ever on youtube. austrian born felix bomb garter stepped out of a balloon on the edge of space and fell to earth.

fearless felix broke three records during that freefall. tom kos tell la has his story. >> disconnect the oxygen hose. atta boy. >> reporter: there he was at 128,000 feet, standing quite literally on the edge of space. preparing to do what no one had done before. with his mom watching from mission control, 43-year-old felix baumgartner offered a few words most hard to understand. and then he was gone, beginning a terrifying supersonic dive from 24 miles up. a white dot as he quickly passed 700 miles per hour. the day began well before sunrise in roswell, new mexico, as the red bull stratus team sent up the balloon. baumgartner is no novice.

he's made harrowing jumps before in brazil, could asia, from 15 and 18 miles high. but sunday's mission was about breaking a free-fall record that had stood since 1960, when joe kitsinger jumped from 19 1/2 miles high, and also breaking the sound barrier. if his suit tore, the paratrooper faced instant death. he was a guest on the "today" show earlier this year. >> well, i like the challenge. i always like to work on projects where i have to start by scratch. this is what we did. >> reporter: sunday after a brief burst of win, baumgartner's balloon got the green light. >> there's the release.
