find women who had backgrounds to become qualified to be members of our cabinet. i went to a number of women's groups and said, can you help us find folks? they brought us binders full of women. >> within machines, someone created the twitter handle called romney binders. it has 32,000 followers. people have been tweeting pictures like this one as well. pretty funny. >> the voter registration deadline has passed in maryland. some of the leading researchers in election technology are especially coura encouraging the state to check accuracy of its database. researchers warned the state that its system could easily be hacked. they say someone could exploit an online tool to change someone's address, party affiliation, or other information. election officials told "the post" they found the hacking story highly unlikely. a suicide bomber detonated a

car bomb in eastern afghanistan earlier in morning. 45 people were hurt in the attack. it happened outside the afghan outpost in the paktiya province. the taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack. police are looking for a gunman who shot a man and crashed a motorcycle. this happened around third street and livingston road in southeast washington. around 12:45 this morning, a gunman on a motorcycle shot a man in the leg. the gunman crashed his bike and took off running. the victim is in the hospital and should recover. the group that launched a controversial advertising campaign on metro is at it again. this is the new ad from the american freedom defense initiative. it features this from the koran, "soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of unbelievers" and a picture of the burning twin towers on september 11th. the group is still waiting for approval from the transit agency. this controversy started when the american freedom defense initiative released an ad describing muslim radicals as savages.

this is in direct response to the counter-campaign against the original ad. that ad calls on people to support israel and defeat jihad. two virginia men waking up in their own beds this morning after spending five days stranded in the snow. jason hiser and neal peckens flew from montana to richmond in a private plane last night. the pair got lost while headaching in glacier national park last week. they spent days in the woods in subfreezing temperatures. we were there when peckens arrived at his herndon home. >> how does it feel to be home? >> we're just relieved to be back with family and friends. we have the rescue teams to thank for that. our heartfelt gratitude to them as well. >> park rangers say they found the men on monday. the pair was well-prepared. apparently, they rationed food, collected fire wood, used a smoky fire and an sos message made out of logs to get some attention. very experienced wilderness men, if you will, they both are. so they had an idea of what they would need to do to survive and

welcome back at 5:14. a scary scene in san francisco. a boat capsized sending 11 crew members overboard. no one was hurt. this was during practice in the america's cup. the crew said the boat was making a turn when the nose suddenly dove into the water, flipping the boat end over end. the boat cost between $8 million and $10 million. no estimate yet on the cost of the damage to the yacht. a new york taxi driver in trouble after getting caught throwing a passenger out of his cab. the cabbie claimed the passenger was drunk and got sick in the backseat of his car. in court, the judge suspended the driver's license. new york laws don't allow a driver to touch a passenger, but they can refuse service. the captain accused of causing the biggest shipwreck in history will go to trial.

franc francesco scuttino is accused of running his ship aground and then abandoning it. yesterday a panel said a sonar echo sounder that tracks water depth was not functioning. thieves walked away with several high priced paintings from a museum in the netherlands. thieves stole paintings from pablo picasso, claude monet, and other artists. the museum displayed the paintings as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. police arrived five minutes after thieves triggered the alarm yesterday. it was too late, though. police are analyzing surveillance video. they believe the thieves may be after a random. officers trying to determine what led to a dedly shooting along the u.s.-canada border in washington state. a man shot and critically injured a canadian border officer yesterday afternoon. the man then turned the gun on himself and died. the driver was on his way from

the u.s. to canada. the shooting temporarily shut down the border crossing on both sides. everything is back open this morning. a colorado community is mourning the loss of a 10-year-old girl killed near denver. more than 2,000 people showed up for a vigil to remember jessica ridgeway. many wore people, the girl's favorite color. the girl disappeared earlier this month after leaving her house to walk to school. after an intense search, police found the girl's dismembered body but have yet to find the suspected killer. a 4.0 magnitude quake hit hollis center, maine, just after 7:00 last night. it sent shock waves throughout new england. a store employee a few miles away from the epicenter thought a gas explosion caused the building to shake, but it was the quake that caused all that rattling. >> we were all just standing in the room practicing, getting ready, warming up, and all of a sudden, the whole building just shook, and the whole room went silent. we were just like whoa. >> a bunch of stuff was shaking

on the tables, but i thought i was seeing things, and i felt the ground rumble, and everybody just went silent. it's like what's happening? >> so far, no reports of injury or damage. today president franklin roosevelt will be honored in new york city. president clinton and nbc's tom brokaw will attend a dedication ceremony for the franklin d. roosevelt four freedoms park. the only memorial dedicated to president roosevelt in his home state of new york. that park celebrates the four freedoms he famously outlined in 1941. they were freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom of what, and freedom from fear. a second person in virginia has died from the meningitis outbreak. that raises the death toll to 16. more than 230 others are sick. the news comes as federal criminal investigators raided the massachusetts pharmacy linked to the infections. heat officials believe steroid injections produced for back pain were contaminated with the disease.

on monday, the food and drug administration warned other drugs from the pharmacy may be tainted as well. a new study refutes the theory that cranberry juice prevents bladder and kidney infections. british researchers reviewed the data from four studies and revealed taking cranberry pills or drinking cranberry juice were no better than a placebo. studies show they'd have to drink two glasses of cranberry juice a day to prevent just one infection. researchers at university of chicago say a good night's sleep can be important. the study found it harder for fat cells and insulin to work properly in volunteers who got just four hours of sleep a night for several days. the same study showed no damage with eight hours of sleep. scientists feel more research is needed to discover exactly how much sleep a person should get and if long-term damage can be reversed with more sleep. >> it'something every day, this lack of sleep and the

you may be able to use reno as well as wisconsin to get around this. ddot set to come out at 6:15. they'll have it closed at 7:15. use nevada as a detour if you're headed to military road between 43rd and 42nd street northwest. i'm tony tull. we'll send it back to you. transportation leaders in southern california are coming under fire with plans to shut down a major roadway for a movie. one of the freeways running through orange county will be closed for the latest installment of the hangover series. it's the first time a county freeway will be shut down for filming. the county's film commissioner defended that decision, calling the filming an economic benefit for the state. hockey could soon be making a comeback. the nhl made a new offer to the players association in hopes of starting the season two weeks from now. the proposal includes a full 82-game season which would start november 2nd. the league locked out the players last month when the current collective bargaining agreement expired.

>> park rangers found the men monday afternoon. the pair was well-prepared for their time in the wilderness. they rationed food, collected fire wood, used a smoky fire and an sos message made out of logs to get some attention. several maryland officials are now defendants in a lawsuit that challenges a court ruling over pitbulls. the "baltimore sun" reports that governor martin o'malley, the state's attorney general, and the court of appeals are defendants. members of baltimore county are challenging a ruling that would force them to give up their dogs if they bite someone. a gunman is on the loose after shooting two people outside a popular montgomery koipt restaurant. this happened at the golden china restaurant about 7:00 last night. police say the suspect shot two men waiting in their car outside the restaurant. the two victims drove about a mile down the road before medics caught up with them and took them to the hospital. folks picking up dinner saw the

chaotic scene outside the restaurant. >> like i didn't want to come in the store. i couldn't tell what happened actually, but i was thinking someone must have gotten shot. that was kind of scary. >> the victims had nonlife-threatening injuries and are expected to be okay. police need your help tracking down two men who robbed a 7-eleven with their guns drawn. take a look at these surveillance photos. the robbery happened at a store in woodbridge. the clerk was not hurt. if you recognize the men in these photos, contact prince william county police. prince william county officials say a new immigration policy change will not crack down on people living in the u.s. illegally. the program called 287g allowed police to investigate the immigration status of people arrested. after this year, the secure communities program will replace it. federal officials will check names of those arrested against a federal database.

new chairman cory stewart says the program only works if someone has a criminal history. >> if someone comes to the united states illegally and they're apprehended for the first time, secure communities would not have that person in the database and won't be identified as an illegal alien. under 287g, law enforcement personnel actually determine whether that person is here legally or not. >> the county says it nabbed 5,000 illegal immigrants under 287g. the board wants i.c.e. to extend the original program for three years. transforming tysons corner won't come cheap. the fairfax county board of supervisors came up with a plan to force land owners and taxpayers in tysons to pay for billions of dollars of land improvements to turn the area into a more vibrant and pedestrian friendly community. under the proposal, land owners in a new tax district will have to pay about 8% more in real estate taxes. the board will likely vote on establishing that tax district

later this year or early next year. prince george's county school board member rosalind johnson resigned from the board. she has been living out of her district since june. johnson moved out of her home to care for her dying mother. her resignation is effective immediately. a suspended gallaudet university administrator is giving her side of the story after she says she was suspended for signing a petition against gay marriage. dr. angela mccaskill discussed the issue . through an interpreter, mccaskill said the university is bullying her. >> i think the university has allowed this issue is escalate out of control, and it could have been handled much differently. they have attempted to

including an update on the opening date. that project is in the final stages of construction and expected to open later this year. when it's complete, northern virginia drivers will have another option between the springfield interchange and the dulles toll road. some lawmakers want to lower the speed camera fines. right now you can pay as much as $250 for going 11 miles over the speed limit. that same violation in maryland costs just $40. ward 3 council member mary cheh co-sponsored a bill to cap low level violations at $50. >> what we risk by having fines that are so out of line with at least the local jurisdictions is the legitimacy of the program. >> d.c. has plans to expand the program, which is expected to net $80 million this year alone. itted can be 2014 before any fine structure goes into place. you'll soon have another option on the table if you shop at best buy. cnbc's shartia brantley is live

buy.com, toysru.com and babiesrus.com between november 1st and september 13th. shoppers will deck the halls on themselves this holiday season. that's according to a survey from the national retail federation. the average shopper is planning to spend about $750 on decorations, presents, and greeting cards. that's up about $10 from what the average shopper actually spent last year. the survey also found 6 out of 10 shoppers plan to spend $140 on presents for themselves this season. a new survey shows that the most dangerous place for your smart phone might be your own home. square trade found 51% of iphone accidents happen at home. the most dangerous rooms in your house are the kitchen, living room, and bathroom. 9% of iphone users report'd dropping their phone in the toilet while 5% left it in the washing machine.
