and some of the nation's leading researchers in technology are telling maryland to check the accuracy of its voter database. according to "the post," researchers warn the system could be easily hacked. they say someone could exploit an online tool to change someone's address or party affiliation. election officials told "the post" they found the scenario highly unlikely. suicide bombers detonated a car bomb in eastern afghanistan. 45 people were hurt in that attack. this happened at the gate of a u.s.-afghan combat outpost in the paktiya province. the taliban is claiming responsibility for that acan at that -- attack. a drive by shooting at third street and livingston road in southeast washington. police say around 12:45 this morning, a gunman on a motorcycle fired a gun, hitting a man in the leg. the gunman then crashed his bike and took off. police are still looking for him. a second person in virginia

has died from the nationwide meningitis outbreak. that raises the death toll now to 16, more than 230 others are sick. this news comes as federal criminal investigators raided the massachusetts pharmacy linked to the infections. health officials believe steroid injections to help back pain were contaminated. on monday the food and drug administration warned other drugs from the pharmacy may be tainted. the group that launched a controversial advertising campaign on metro wants a new ad posted in stations and buses. this is the new ad from the american freedom defense initiative. it features this from the koran. "soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of unbelievers," and it has a picture of the burning twin towers on september 11th. they're still waiting for approval from the transit agency. this started when the american freedom defense niche viv released an ad calling muslim radicals as savages.

and now this is a response against the counter-campaign to the original ad. today a controversial board member of the agency behind metro's expansion to dulles will step down. dennis marteyer has been criticized for taking lavish trips at the expense of the washington metropolitan airport's authority. that agency has come under fire by officials at the federal and local level for lack of accountability, transparency, and judgnt. marteyer says he'll voice his own issues with the board during his resignation. ahead, a wicked shake. a quake that rattled nerves across new england. ♪

welcome back. at 6:15. a california film commissioner is defending a decision to shut down a major freeway to film scenes from "the hangover 3." the commissioner says the film benefits the state economically. a traffic alert in d.c. military road is about to close. it's closing right now in both directions at 42nd street because of emergency repairs. news 4's tony tull live in friendship heights with how long the repairs might last. >> reporter: good morning. good news and bad news. bad news first. the repairs that ddot was going to do to military road at 43rd street was supposed to end at 7:15. it's not going to finish until 10:00 a.m. this morning. you're going to need to find an alternate route. take a live look.

ddot just arrived on scene a few minutes ago. they're about to shut down military road between 43rd and 42nd street. sos that the good news. you'll be able to hop on reno or wisconsin to get around the road closure. you will not have to take nevada as i stated earlier. as you can see, there's plates on the ground. the road collapsed underneath. they're going to have to dig it out, pour in some cement, let that try, and then put asphalt over the top. ddot is saying they won't be done by 7:15. they'll be done about 10:00 a.m. you can hop on reno or over to wisconsin to get around the road closure. tony tull, news 4. an earthquake that hit the new england states caused no apparent damage, but it did rattle some nerves. the 4.0 magnitude quake at hollis center, maine, hit last night and sent shock waves as far as connecticut. a store employee a few miles away had no idea what was going on. >> i heard a bang, and it felt

like the building was just shaking. went off for three seconds, and then it started shaking again. >> earthquakes in new england are rare but not uncommon. maine experienced a series of quakes in 2006. the strongest quake to hit maine was an estimated 5.9 magnitude earthquake in 1904. 17 after the hour. this morning a busy u.s.-canada border crossing in washington state back open after a deadly shooting. police say a man driving a van shot and critically injured a canadian border officer. the man then shot and killed himself. he was on his way from the u.s. to canada. investigators are trying to figure out what led to that shooting. a new york taxi driver is in legal trouble after getting caught on camera throwing a passenger out of his cab. surveillance video shows him pull the man out of the backseat then shove him. the cabbie claimed the passenger was drunk and got sick in the backseat of his car. in court, a judge suspended the cabbie's license.

new york city taxi laws do not allow drivers to touch a passenger, but they can refuse service. crew overboard. a racing boat capsized in san francisco, sending all 11 members into the water. this was during practice for the america's cup. the crew says the boat was making a turn, when the nose suddenly dove into the water, and that flipped the boat end over end. nobody got hurt. the boat cost between $8 million and $10 million. so far no estimate on the degree of damage. experts say several works of arted can be held for ransom. thieves walked away with several high priced art from a museum in the netherlands. thieves stole paintings from pablo picasso, claude monet, and other artists. the museum displayed the collection as part of its 32rd anniversary celebration. investigators are now analyzing the museum's surveillance video. this morning we're getting a look at a band of well-known dollars. they call themselves the james bond game. took a look at the surveillance

video. it shows the four menusing their butts to bust down the door at a home in chatham, new jersey. the suspects avoid using their hands or feet to break open the doors and windows. that way they avoid leaving fingerprints and footprints. the thieves got away with some jewelry, but police believe this gang has hit dozens of homes in affluent communities for the last year using their butts. the capitals and the rest of the nhl could soon be hitting the ice again. the nhl recently made a new offer to the players association in the hopes of starting to season in two weeks. if the players union agreed to the deal, an 82-game season would start november 2nd. the league locked out the players last month when the current collective bargaining agreement expired. commissioners requested time to review the proposal. ♪ if you like it then you should have put a ring on it ♪ >> the nfl confirming they like beyonce too. she's going to perform at the

thankful to wake up in their own beds. they spent five days stranded in the wilderness. neal peckens and jason hiser lost their way hiking in glacier national park last week. they spent days in the woods in subfreezing temperatures. we were there when peckens arrived at his herndon home. >> overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from everyone. their families received just a ton of support. we really appreciate that. we can't express enough gratitude for everything that everyone has done on our behalf since we've been gone. >> park rangers found the men monday. the rangers say the menused a smoky fire and an sos made out of logs to get attention. officials are questioning an apology by police. one of the officers apologized for the incident caught on cell phone video. the lawyers for the officers say

they only apologized because other officers had to go into internal affairs for questioning. the beating happened after maryland's basketball team beat duke in 2010. a suspected gallaudet university professor says the school supports bullying after she was suspended for signing a petition supporting gay marriage. dr. mccaskill discussed it yesterday in annapolis. last week the school suspended her for signing a petition to put maryland's same-sex issue on the ballot. through an interpreter, mccaskill said she's allowed to sign whatever petition she wants. in this very moment, she determined that this signature meant i was anti-gay. no one has the right to decide what my signature meant. >> the university's president reached a statement about the controversy. he said, "while i expect that a resolution of this matter can be reached that will enable dr. mccaskill to continue as our

chief diversity officer, this will require that she and the gallaudet community work together to respond to the concerns that have been raised." police on the hunt for a gunman who shot two people outside a popular chinese restaurant. this happened at the golden china restaurant on columbia pike in silver spring. it was at 7:00 last night. the suspect shot two men who were waiting in their car outside the restaurant. the two victims drove a mile down the road before medics caught up with them and took them to the hospital. those are expected to be okay. family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the loss of a college professor shot and killed at her mother's house in reston, virginia. 68-year-old dr. ruth hamilton was shot and killed by her brother in front of their 91-year-old mother. police say a family feud led to the deadly shooting. police arrested the victims's brother charles hamilton. dr. hamilton taught at american university and yale university. the program called 287-g expires in december. it allowed police to investigate

position. she's been serving on the board while living outside her district since june. under maryland law, a board member who moves out of his or her district is supposed to resign. johnson moved out of her laurel home to care for her dying mother. her resignation is effective immediately. and d.c. council member jim graham may be in trouble over a land deal four years ago. the department of ethics and government accountability is launching a preliminary investigation into the matter. the panel wants to see if graham violated d.c. ethics rules with his role as a d.c. council member and metro board member. graham is facing questions about whether he improperly tried to influence metro's plans for a vacant lot near the shaw howard metro station. he says he will cooperate with the ethics board. today dennis marteyer will step down from his post as a board member on the metropolitan airport authority. he's been criticized with using the authority's money to take lavish trips. the agency which oversees the local airports and metro to

dulles airport has come under fire for lack of accountability, transparency, and judgment. marteyer says he'll voice his own issues with the board during his resignation. the group that launched a controversial advertising campaign on metro is at it again. this is the new ad from american freedom defense initiative. it features this from the koran, "soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of unbelievers," and it has a picture of the burning twin towers on september 11th. the group is still waiting for approval from the transit agency. this controversy started when the american freedom defense initiative released an ad describing muslim radicals as savages. the group says this ad is in direct response to the council on american islamic relations counter-campaign against the original ad, and that ad calls on people to support israel and defeat jihad. 6:48 right now. you find it, they'll match it. that's the offer target hopes will keep you in their stores this holiday shopping season. cnbc's jackie deangelis live with more on that.

another option. a traffic alert in a busy part of northwest washington. emergency work being done at military road and 42nd street. in just the last few minutes, a change of plans for crews working out there. news 4's tony tull is live with an update. tony good morning. >> reporter: eun, good morning. 30 minutes ago we spoke with ddot, and they said they weren't going to be able to finish the road work until 10:00 a.m. this morning. i spoke to a supervisor, and he said, we're calling an audible. going to fill the sinkhole with concrete, and cover it back up. you can see on military road between 43rd and 42nd street the road is shut down in both directions. the concrete truck is here. they're going to fill t nkle, as i said, and they're going to cover it up with a plate and come bk a later te to put the asphalt over the top of it. if you are heading out this morning, chances are not going to need to worry about nan alternate route. chances are the repairs will be done and you'll be able to
