yes. tom kierein is here this morning. what do you have for us, tom? >> not as chilly, but still pretty cold this morning as we start off. right now there is a look at our temperatures around region. it's right around 50 degrees. reagan national now at z at 55. in the rural areas, we do have a little bit of patchy fog. watch out for that and watch out for the deer. this is the time of the year they listen to springsteen "dancing in the dark." they are out there. i had a near hit a couple days ago. a line of diminishing showers near the central mississippi valley, but later today there is a chance of damaging winds around our region as this front does get closer to us between maybe late this afternoon into early this evening. hour by hour today, we'll have a nice morning. it's going to be chilly, though. by 6:00 a.m., still around 50. by noontime, upper 60s.

searching for the person who shot a man around bening road. the victim was taken to the hospital with a life threatening injury. threat are not releasing details or a motive in this case. good morning. a drone strike in southern yemen has killed at least seven al qaeda suspects. we understand the strike happened at dawn. the drone was likely american and fired several rockets at the group. this is the second drone attack this month. this morning, the man accused of trying to blow up the federal reserve building in new york is in a jail cell. an fbi sting operation led to the arrest of this man. the fbi and police started surveillance after he met an informant in new york's central park. then yesterday morning, federal agents say he parked a van with

explosives outside the bank, tried to set it off with a cell phone he thought was a detonator. police say that plot proves new yorkers cannot let their guard down. >> still very much a coveted target by terrorists. new york is at the top of the terrorist target list in this country. i think this just reaffirms that. >> the federal agents say he first targeted the new york stock exchange, but setted on the bank because of lighter security. tim kaine and george allen will square off tonight in their final debate before election day. it takes place at 7:00 on the virginia tech campus. tim kaine holds a slight lead over allen in recent polls. both hope to replace jim webb. bob mcdonnell will join allen on the campaign trail next week. both men will visit northern virginia on tuesday and hampton roads the following thursday. this will be the first time mcdonnell has campaigned for allen since june.

the governor has hosted fundraisers for the senate candidate since then. with just 19 days to go before the election, president obama and mitt romney are spending time courting voters in critical battleground states. today the president heads to new hampshire. tomorrow, he will be in northern virginia. here you can see he visited ohio yesterday, talking to a crowd of about 14,000 college students at ohio university. the president brought up mitt romney's binder of women comments from tuesday's debate. it referred to romney's remarks of finding women to fill cabinet spots in massachusetts. >> see, we don't have to order up some binders to find qualified, talented, driven young women to learn and teach and thrive and start businesses. >> the president's stop at george mason university tomorrow will be his second in as many weeks. fresh off the debarkt mitt romney also spending some time in virginia. he spoke to a crowd of more than 8,000 last night in leesburg.

romney also referred to key moments from the debate. he focused as well on the issue of defense. >> unlike cutting the military, as this president would do by a trillion dollars, i would instead maintain our military strikes because america's military must be second to none, and so strong, no one would ever test us. >> both romney and president obama will speak in new york city tonight at the alfred e. smith dinner. it's a fundraising event for needy children. the two will meet again on monday night for their third and final debate. george mcgovern's health has taken a turn for the worse. his family said the 90-year-old is no longer responsive in hospice care and his daughter says it appears her father is nearing the end. mcgovern was the democratic presidential nominee in 1962. new developments in the national meningitis outbreak. health officials say three more people have died. that raises the death toll now

we begin with breaking news. police are on the seen of a pedestrian accident in the huntington text of fairfax county, at the intersection of richmond highway and huntington avenue. megan mcgrath is there with more. >> reporter: investigators are still here on the scene. they're taking some measurements documenting the scene. we're told that they should be wrapping up here in the next 15 minutes or so. this is a deadly pedestrian accident. the person who was struck was pronounced dead at the hospital. if you take a look behind me, you can see the traffic impact that we're seeing here this morning, they have one lane getting by to the left on richmond highway. we've been told that they should be wrapping up their

vote for question seven. the suspected mastermind of the 9/11 attacks is accusing the u.s. government of killing millions of people. khalid sheikh mohammed made the assertion yesterday when he appeared in a military courtroom in guantanamo bay. he claims the government uses national security as a reason to kill and torture. he was in court for hearings that will set the ground rules for his trial. he and four other men are charged with terrorism and murder. they could be sentenced to death. their trial won't likely begin for more than a year. we may know who was behind last month's deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. "the new york times" is reporting that libyan authorities blame ahmed katallah for that attack. he is the leader of a militant

islamist group, that group is not affiliated with al qaeda, but it does share some of the same believes. they have denied having any part of the attack. a high school hockey coach whose name appeared on the list of paying an instructor list for sex has stepped down. police say alexis wright ran the operation out of her zumba studio. she's accused of videotaping her encounters with more than 150 men. she's pled not guilty. earlier this week, the first 21 names of alleged clients were released. the next batch of names is expected to be made public next friday. lawyers for the two prince george's county police officers on trial for beating a university of maryland student will continue to present their defense today. a judge tossed out the most serious charges against officers reginald baker and james harrison. the judge says there is no proof that they meant to inflict

permanent injuries. the incident happened in 2010 in college park. baker testified he felt threatened when he saw a large male yelling and running at police horses with clenched firsts. >> the judge did dismiss the most serious charge. >> what do you make of it? >> no further comment. we're still in trial. >> the victim suffered a concussion. the officers still face second-degree assault and police misconduct charges. this morning, police are stepping up patrols in southeast washington after thieves robbed two teenagers at gunpoint for their nike tim duncan shoes. the shoes are valued at more than $200. that robbery happened outside a convenience store in the 2000 block of alabama avenue. police sources tell news4 one of the robbers misfired and hit one of the teens in the arm. the victim was taken to the hospital. those robbers ran away with the shoes. resource officers in one maryland county will have a new tool to keep schools safe. baltimore county's police chief authorized the use of hand held

metal detecting wands for officers assigned to county high schools and middle schools. the officers have been all trained and must have reasonable explainable suspicion this a student or visitor has a weapon to use the wand. a 19-year-old pepco employee is being called a hero for saving a little boy from a fire. ryan callahan was working with a crew, upgrading electricity at a rural home in upper marl borrow. he noticed some smoke and ran inside to wake up the 4-year-old boy who was working upstairs. the other pepco owner was walking her two other children down the long driveway to the school bus. she is thankful those pepco workers move sod fast. >> i sat the fire extinguisher down. i couldn't see anything. this whole area was full of smoke. >> they're really a god send because i don't know what would have happened. >> firefighters are still trying

to figure out exactly how that fire started, but the mother says she may have left the stove on while trying to get the kids off to school. this morning, a fredericksburg, virginia, man is facing charges for allegedly firing a bullet into a neighbor's apartment. it's a story you'll see only on news4. police say alexander ferguson shot a gun into greg gibson's master bedroom early yesterday morning. no one was hurt. gibson said he did not even notice it until his 5-year-old son found the bullet hole in the wall. the bullet was lodged into the side of a dresser. police ended up searching ferguson's apartment. >> there were clear totes that came out. >> police seized four firearms from ferguson's apartment. he was arrested and charged. it's not clear what ferguson was doing when the gun went off. deputies trying to learn more about a man hit and killed by an amtrak train. he was on the tracks near mine road. that accident stopped trains headed south during much of the

evening rush. no word yet on why that man was on the tracks. today the national institute of health and walter reed national military center plan to add nearly 4,000 employees over the next 20 years, since the county cannot regulate the expansions, it plans to recommend suggestions to federal planners. the hope is to prevent traffic congestion in bethesda. suggestions include urging people to walk to work and use mass transit. this morning, two virginia hikers are waking up at home after they got lost in the wilderness for a week or so. neil and jason left for a hiking trip in montana's glacier national park and they got lost. their families called authorities when the men didn't return on time. the men tell news4 that they used a blanket and put out an sos used burned logs so rescuers could find them. they were rescued late monday. they say they were worried about

you're watching news4 today. >> welcome back. more american families are spending money on high definition tvs. the nielsen company reports more than three quarters of american homes now have an hgtv and nearly 40% have more than one set in their home. in 2007, only 11% of americans had hgtv in their home. >> i still don't know how to use mine. the average student loan debt for recent college graduates is up, apparently. a new report found the class of 2011 finished school with the average debt of $26,600, that is up 5% from the class before. the unemployment rate for recent grads is 8.8% right now, and that is still lower than those without a degree. the unemployment rate for those with only a high school diploma is 19.1%. on a much happier note, it is still fall, but a lot of people may want to start thinking about christmas. >> that's because today you'll have a chance to win free tickets to the national
