good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 midday. i'm barbara harrison. >> i'm keith russell. thousands of people across the district, maryland and virginia took part in the first ever earthquake drill this morning. news 4's tony tull is live at the middle school where they were part of a great shakeout of 2012. what did you personally learn? >> i have to tell you, when ever an earthquake happens, my

instinct is run out of the building screaming, unprepared. today, i learned exactly what to do in case of an earthquake. >> drop! cover! hold! drop! >> we just performed an earthquake drill. the idea behind it is to get the kids ready, in case of an emergency to have them prepare and not panic, to have them quietly following instructions and most of all to be safe. >> reporter: at 10:18, they are shaking out. an emergency preparedness group. this morning, they join thousands of other schools and organizations around the country participating in the great shakeout of 2012. >> we can't predict the future totally 100%. we have to be ready. >> reporter: a little over a

ar ago, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck virginia. this video captured the moment it started causing such severe damage some buildings remain closed. >> in mineral, they could damage buildings. we have two school that is are damaged so badly, we had to tear them down. >> reporter: it may have been unexpected, they want to make sure everyone is overprepared, not underprepared should another earthquake happen. >> i don't think you can ever be overpr overprepared. they can happen. we proved that a year ago. when it happens, there are things you can do to protect yourself. >> reporter: if you are interested in becoming part of other shake out drills, you can. i was impressed on how well the kids were prepared and executed

happening. we had the strong storms in the midwest and south. now, they are, as they advance east, they have broken up a lot. scattered showers in ohio. there's a developing line that may have thunder shower activity. then, coming toward the metro area, perhaps around sunset this evening. i'll have details on that. we'll look at friday and the weekend and into next week, too. just a couple minutes. barbara and keith? >> thank you, tom. >> right now, clean up is under way after a kitchen fire at a popular resort. the 44,000 block of leesburg. the flash fire injured three people. two females taken to the hospital with minor injuries. a man flown to a local burn center for serious injuries. time for a check on the midday traffic now. >> let's soo what danella sealock has to show us.

good morning. >> good morning. good to see you both. let's head to the roadways. 66 westbound, washington boulevard, a multivehicle crash. it was in the left lane, now the shoulder lane. police are on the scene. let's head to the american legion bridge. usual road work is taking place. if you are on the outer loop, two left lanes are blocked. the cones are up. you are slow over the american legion bridge because of the road work in this area. back to you both. >> thank you. arlington rush hour includes major congestion. this morning, police launched a campaign to end the battle that develops between drivers and pedestrians. they are trying to get cars to stop blocking the box. >> reporter: lynne street around 8:30 in the morning, the traffic can stack up. making it worse, when drivers try to squeak through the intersection and the light changes and they get caught in the middle.

arlington county police are trying to stop that. they are manning intersections, educating drivers. they call it blocking the box. someone pulls into the intersection on a green light, but doesn't make it all the way through. when the light changes, they are just sitting there, clogging the intersection. >> i have seen several people doing it. several people trying to get around. it's impossible to get around. >> we have to wait until they move. i have seen people hit their cars, too, like get out of the way. >> reporter: on lynn streed and rosalind, it's a big problem. police are trying to educate drivers. officers are manning the intersection of lynne and wilson boulevard. when the light is about to change, they prevent drivers from getting in the intersection and instruct them behind the white line and out of the crosswalk. >> stop athe white line until you have full access to stop. that includes the crosswalk. >> officers can write tickets

for blocking the intersection, it's not the goal of this program. educating drivers, they hope to stop people from blocking the box in the first place. in rosalind, megan mcgrath, news 4. new this morning, firefighters are trying to determine what sparked a deadly fire in northwest washington that started around 3: this morning on newton place in the pet worth area. rescuers took an elderly man to the hospital where he later passed away. it's possible an oxygen tank contributed to the fire. no one else was injured. richmond highway is back open after a deadly pedestrian accident. it happened around 3:00. the victim was taken to the hospital but did not survive. police are not releasing details about the victim or the circumstances of that accident. we are told the driver stayed on the scene. so far, no charges have been filed. another pedestrian accident sends a woman to the hospital.

this happened on baltimore avenue in college park about 9:30 last night. the truck was going south when it hit the woman. she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. the driver did stay on the scene. no charges have been filed. baltimore avenue was closed for five hours for police to gather evidence. it is open now. police are searching for the driver responsible for a five-car pile up in silver springs. chopper 4 above the crash around 9:00 last night. a pedestrian was hit in this one, too. she's in critical condition at a hospital. a second person was hurt, but should be okay. police are looking for a newer model black pick-up truck with damage to the front passenger side. police are searching for a man in northeast d.c. the shooting happened around 12:30. the victim was taken to the hospital with a life threatening injury. police are not releasing details or a motive in this case.

trail but in the same room at the same time. stay with us. new today, a drone strike killed at least seven al qaeda militants in southern yemen. security officials target the gathering on a farm outside of town that was once an al qaeda stronghold. the official said it was likely an american drone that fired rockets at the group. this was the second drone attack this month. the first killed five suspected al qaeda gunmen. we are learning more about a

foiled terror plot from the family of a man arrested. he is now in jail accused of trying to blow up the federal reserve building. the father of the 21-year-old is a bank manager. his family said he never showed radical ten dtendencies. news of the arrest came as a shock to some who were nearby. >> i'm glad they caught him. if it failed this time, there's a chance he could do it again. >> i work in the building next to the treasury and -- >> reporter: it's unsettling? >> it is unsettling. otherwise, i wouldn't have known. >> federal agents say he targeted the new york stock change. that was the first plan. he decided last month to go after the bank instead.

today, george allen and tim kaine will square off in their third and final debate. it will take place in blacksburg. political analysts do not expect fireworks. neither candidate will take much of a risk because the race is so close. recent polls show kaine a democrat over allen. newsweek is ending their print publication after 80 years. you will be able to read the paper online. the final print edition is scheduled for december 31st. newsweek's editor says job cuts are on the way, but won't say how many. >> that is sad. >> i remember reading it as a kid. >> i like to hold something in my hand when i read it. >> books. >> books, too. it's all going digital. >> today, we are going autumnal as we have a lot of color showing up quickly. sometimes you go to bed and the

the afternoon. right now, throughout much of the region, right near 60 degrees. most of maryland, most of virginia and west virginia, most low kcations are in the 60s. most locations climbing into the 60s. here is a view from space. the cloud cover is rolling in from the west. that is ahead of a front that is moving our way. that front has been triggering severe weather. this morning, it's dissipated. one line of showers now redeveloping. that may be swinging our way here perhaps after sunset. behind the front, there's cold temperatures. chicago, 50. some of the chilly air is going to arrive here on the weekend. now going forward over the next couple days, this is the line of showers coming into the mountains around 5:00. it will be into west virginia, western maryland. after that, maybe some of these rolling through the metro area and heading north for the

evening hours. by dawn on friday, 6:00 or 7:00, a lingering sprinkle. after that, sunshine on friday afternoon. during the day saturday, a few clouds coming and going. a pleasant weekend to follow. for the rest of the afternoon, clouds coming through. sun in and out. light breezes. low 70s by the afternoon. upper 60s by late afternoon. then the clouds thicken and lower a bit for the evening hours. it's after sunset we might get a passing shower and lightning. i think chances of severe weather are greatly diminished. a slight risk of wind damage from the latest storm. it's between 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. after that, a lingering shower on friday morning. sun back friday afternoon and a mild afternoon. the colder air moves in on saturday morning down to the upper 40s and saturday afternoon partly cloudy into the mid-60s. great weather for all the outdoor activities for high school and college football games.

looked at 15,000 men over the age of 50. the men who took centrum silver had an 8% reduced risk of several varieties of cancer. they didn't find harmful side effects from the multivitamins. october is breast cancer awareness month according to the american cancer society. a woman in the united states is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes with early detection and treatment. more women are living with cancer. many survivors use exercise to overcome this challenge. steve hayes is here to share one woman's journey, but you have two lovely ladies with you. yes. >> get the introductions in. >> linda and julia. >> how did you overcome cancer? >> nothing prepares you for the word you have breast cancer. you feel like you have lost control of your body and you

long for something that is -- that is good. exercise and specifically pilates was treatment for you. >> that is the course that you teach. what did you notice so special about julia that would help her persevere? >> she had a determination that she was going to beat this from the beginning. even on the days when she didn't feel good from treatments, she was still always there. she would hang in there no matter what. she has a positive attitude. that's the key, the attitude. >> positivity goes a long way. we are positive we are all going to take something out of this lesson today. you are going to demonstrate. let's look at video of pilates and how beneficial it is. >> steve, you want to jump in here? >> i'd love to. exercising releases endor fins into the brain.

blood circulates into the muscles. it's a healing process. not only are you physically healing yourself, but mentally, too. here is a great exercise here. remember this, these are great exercises. this is a great abexercise. it's an intense one that really keeps you moving. >> right now, while we are all moving, what can you show us in studio right now that we can all take away from today's lesson? >> we are going to go through a couple exercises from the pink ribbon program developed for women in recovery from breast cancer. it's pilates exercise program. you can do it on a chair at home. sit on the box here. >> that's what i like, no excuses. >> you are going to sit nice and tall, bring your palms together.

start with an inner peace stretch, inhale, press the fingertips up, keep the shoulders relaxed. exhale, palms down. >> great core exercise. everything emanates from the core. it's the center part of the anything you do. if you are strong here, everything else comes into place. >> it seems like it's ultimately relaxing. >> it is. breathing is the key to that. let's move into another one. we are going hold the bands. simple, inexpensive. there's a little bit of tension on it. we are beginning to engage the shoulders. we are going to inhale. lift the arms overhead and exhale. press down. we call this touchdown. >> touchdown! >> yeah. >> you know, the band with the touch down. >> got it. >> one more of those. >> linda, you can get these bands anywhere? >> just about any place. online and a lot of department stores.

one of my colleagues called you to tell you you had to talk to me about this? >> i better keep my mouth quiet. >> a little bird told you. it doesn't matter how big your purse is. you brought purses you stole from your wife's closet. she likes a big purse, too. >> a lot of women do. the larger the bag, the more things they can put in there. it's where the health concern is. >> how much weight should be? a purse? >> 10% of your body weight across your shoulders. keep in mind, most people carry their bags on one side so cut it in half. the average about of weight in your bag is five to seven pounds. >> cut it in half. say you weigh 130 pounds, 13 pounds is 10% and half of that. >> six or seven pounds, absolutely. >> what are the health concerns?

>> i am seeing more and more of this, neck pain, shoulder pain, disk problems that produce neurological systems. >> can you see it in x-rays? >> you can see it through the physical exam and then when you do a diagnostic exam or mri, yes, you can see that disk compression and nerve irritation. >> what is the proper way to carry a handbag? >> the best thing for you to do is mix things up. carry them in your hand, switch shoulders. ideal way is messenger style. take the bag with a long strap and carry it over your shoulder, like this. >> you are getting weight off your shoulder. >> and you are distributing the weight evenly. it's what you want to do when you carry a bag that is too heavy. >> very few of us are like the queen of england with a bag over our wrist like this, there's probably nothing in it.

>> if the weight is excessive in a bag and you are carrying that bag, you can develop things like tendinitis or carpal tunnel if the bag is too heavy. >> you challenged me to bring my purse. >> sure did. >> i brought it. >> i brought the scale that never lies. we are going calibrate it. >> i can tell you right now, it's probably not going pass the test. we are going to set it on the scale to see where it's at. i'm going to turn it around so we can look. you are around ten pounds. >> it's not so bad, huh in. >> if you took out some of the things you have in here, secret weight like electronic book reader, water bottles, you are going to remove three or four pounds. i would have guessed it's more than ten pounds. >> i hear you bring a roller to work. >> you did get the scoop. i carry this one like this but

sometimes i carry it on a roller bag. >> the best thing for you is to alternate shoulders. if you have to have those things in your bag, alternate your shoulders. >> you have tips to ease purse pain. >> lighten the load. take things out that you don't need in there. consider wider straps to ease the stress on nerves and shoulder muscles. switch things up. hand shoulder, messenger style. throughout the day, stretch your shoulder muscles. >> have you gotten your wife trying to buy smaller bags than this? >> i'm working on it. i have a problem called the holidays around the corner. i'm working on it. >> we buy what's in style and the big bags are in style. >> they are. >> maybe you should work on the designe designers. make smaller bags for us. it's always great to see you. thanks for coming. keith?

applications for unemployment benefits jumped to the highest level last month. let's check in with hampton pearson. >> hey, keith. shouldering other wighty matters, we have stocks in negative to mixed territory breaking a four-day winning streak after disappointing news on jobs. the dow is up six points. the nasdaq is down seven. the s&p is up a fraction of a point. the labor department says applications for unemployment jumped to the highest level in four months, jobless claims jumping to 388,000. it's higher than what economists forecast. on the flip side, a closely watched gauge of future economic activity rebounded. it's leading economic indicators rose. it's the biggest gain in seven

a mother is praising a pepco crew for saving her son when her house caught on fire. they were upgrading electricity at her home. a pepco lineman noticed smoke. the 19-year-old ran inside and woke up the 3-year-old boy sleeping upstairs. the other workers ran to alert the homeowner. she was walking the other two children down the drive way to the school bus. she's thankful they moved fast. >> i ran, i'm assuming. i couldn't see anything. this area was full of smoke. >> they are a god send. i don't know what would have happened. >> firefighters are still trying to figure out exactly how the fire started. the mother says she may have left a stove on trying to get the other children ready for school. >> let's take a look at the stories we are following on news 4. pat lawson muse is in the news room with a preview of things to come. hi, pat. >> hi.
