clinton. we can see the cruiser wrapped around a pole. another vehicle is involved. a white vehicle. we don't know how many people were injured in the crash. but police say the officer was critically injured. branch avenue is closed right now in both directions. this is the second serious crash involving a prince george's county police officer in recent months. officer adrian morris was killed in a crash on i-95 in august. stay with news4 for updates on this crash as they come in. good afternoon. i'm pat muse. >> i'm gin handly. we're also following a developing story at this hour in arlington. police are investigating reports of a man throwing a molotov cocktail inside the ballston mall in the food court during the lunch rush. witnesses say they saw a man light a bottle and dropped it from the third floor. the bottle shattered but it did not ignite. the mall is closed right now.

police have not made any arrests so far. derrick ward spoke to witnesses inside the mall when it happened. he'll have their reaction and also what else police found in the mall at 5:00. after a long and hated court battle, thousands of confidential files from the boy scots of america were made public today. >> the documents detail years of child sex abuse by some scout leaders. as jay gray reports, this could lead to new criminal charges. >> reporter: these documents have been hidden from the public for decades, just like so many of the horrific crimes outlined in the nearly 15,000 pages here. but today, they're being revealed. >> these are files that documents the history of allegations of abuse in scouting, and how the boy scouts responded to those allegations. >> reporter: the boy scouts of america fought to keep the files private saying a confidential

list shouldn't be released. a scoutmaster in the state was convicted of abuse. >> you do n get to keep secrets about hidden dangers to children. period, end of conversation. that's what they did. it was wrong. and that's why a jury was infuriated. >> reporter: attorneys who have reviewed the documents say they show a pattern of molestation. >> for us, it represents the pain and the anguish of thousands of untold scouts. >> reporter: often carried out by single men in their 30s and 40s who spent a lot of one-on-one time with potential victims. many of the scout leaders considered some of the best in their regions. >> in the past, we didn't do the job we should have, and we're sorry for that, profoundly sorry. >> reporter: boy scout officials acknowledge there have been problems but are quick to point out that the times and focus on safety have changed dramatically. >> we try to remind people where we are today.

how we've been leaders in this protection. >> reporter: for many, the concern continues to be what could be gng on in their own backyard. jay gray, nbc news. >> the files made public today deal with cases from 1965 through 1985. lawyers are pushing to have all of the documents released. breaking news this afternoon in the trial of two police officers accused of beating a former university of maryland student. closing arguments are now delayed after a question about the ability of judge beverly woodard to be fair. news4 has learned from the state's attorney's office that judge woodard was formerly married to a prince george's county police officer who was convicted of using excessive force. after a closed-door meeting this afternoon with the prosecution and the defense, judge woodard said she felt comfortable with the trial continuing. just yesterday the most serious charges against the two police officers accused in the beating

of then student jack mckenna were dismissed. chris gordon will have much more coming up at 5:00 tonight. new details in the foiled terrorist plot in new york. 21-year-old quazi nafis is accused of trying to blow up the federal reserve building there. how new york officials are responding to the plot. keith? >> hey, pat. even though authorities say nafis did not achieve his mission to blow up the federal reserve building, the question becomes, how do you prevent others from thinking they can pull off an act of terrorism in this country. the 21-year-old nafis came to the united states from bangladesh on a student visa. he attended southeast missouri state for one semester and gave no reason for putting in a transfer in july. today, new york senator chuck shumer said southeast missouri state did nothing wrong. the country needs to get tougher on the visa regulations or this problem will never go away.

>> we do know that the student visa program in the hands of a few wrongdoers, so-called sham universities around the country, are serving as a back door for foreign nationals to enter our country improperly. and it's very easy for a would-be terrorist to figure out how to get a student visa from one of these sham universities. >> reporter: nafis is being held at a detention center in book lynn. he faces life in prison. his attorney so far has no comment. under cover, federal agents were able to save the day this time. we can only hope there is no next time. in the newsroom, keith russell, news4. drop! >> there it is, the great shakeout, a worldwide earthquake drill practiced for the first time this year in maryland, virginia and the district. langston hughes middle school in reston was one of thousands of schools in our area to

participate this morning. fema representatives were there to help. they say the biggest danger in earthquakes is falling objects. after last year's 5.8 magnitude quake centered in virginia, today was all about making sure kids are ready, calm and know what to do if it happens again. >> we can't predict the future totally 100%. we have to be ready. and most of all, we have to not only keep our kids safe, but we have to put them in a position where they're so used to doing these things, they don't panic. >> this is the fourth year for the great shakeout, and about 14 million people took part all over the world. let's talk now about the weather. here's a live look out there. but we could be in for a round of strong storms. storm team 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is monitoring our conditions this afternoon. >> right now, this afternoon, looking very, very nice. temperatures of 70 degrees currently. the winds gusting at times upwards of 15 to 25 miles an hour. the airport only about 8 miles

an hour, the winds out of the south. we are also seeing plenty of cloud cover, but also peaks and pokes of sunshine, too. take a look at the numbers around the region. most everybody into the 70s to the east. 60s back to the west. 65 in hagerstown, 64 in winchester, 71 in la plata. 74 degrees towards fredericksburg. no rain around our region right now. but over the next couple of hours we'll see an area down to the south, a few showers could turn into a few thunderstorms as it moves farther to the north. this would get to our area in the next two to three hours. here's the frontal boundary back to the west. it has strong to potentially severe storms with it. this will continue to move our way. it will be making its way through this area in the late evening and overnight hours. i'll tell you when it will arrive coming up in my forecast.

at least for mid-october. windy gusting to 18 miles an hour. some locations over 20. a bit of a breezy afternoon. temperatures in the 60s back to the north and west. 70s down to the south and east for the most part. 72 in culpepper. 71 in washington. 67 down towards pax river. 69 right now in annapolis. the radar showing things all clear, at least right around our area. as you widen out, there's two areas of rain. one down to the south right in here. that is starting to expand just a little bit. i do expect this to make its way up across the area along i-95 and into portions of southern maryland. this will be here in the next two to three hours. then we get into this. this is where the strong to severe thunderstorms are right now. you can see the severe thunderstorm warnings for extreme northeastern portions of tennessee. these storms will make their way our way fairly slowly. these will come in duringhe late evening, into the overnight

hours. once again, we could be in for damaging winds. but this is not going to be a widespread severe weather event, so don't worry too much about it. i want you to take a look at this storm, because once again, this is a massive storm. it goes from canada all the way down towards the gulf of mexico, and just look at that swirl in the atmosphere. if this was the middle of winter, we'd be talking about a major snowstorm. but that's not what's happening. rain everywhere, and very gusty winds. winds still gusting upwards of 50, 60 miles an hour behind this storm. eventually, it will bring us some cooler air. but it's not going to happen until probably the weekend. that cooler air is not nearly as cold as it has been so far this year. your weather forecast, here we go. as far as the future weather goes, warm ahead of this frontal boundary with a few showers and storms ahead of it. tonight, this area of low pressure right along the front, that will bring in ample moisture, and 3:00 a.m., most of this activity will be overnight. but it will allow us to see a pretty good amount of rain in some locations.

could be rain early tomorrow morning, and by tomorrow afternoon it clears out of here. i think tomorrow should be a pretty nice day. especially after around the 11:00, 12:00 hour. by saturday, more cloud cover, and still mild. temperatures will be about average for this time of year. but it will be cooler with highs in the mid-60s. evening forecast, mostly cloudy, breezy and warm. late showers and maybe a storm. 64 to about 69 degrees. tomorrow morning, waking up to some rain out there. especially areas of showers and slick roads. not just from the rain, but from the leaves that are now falling on those roads. once the leaves get wet, they become a little on the slick side. temperatures 52 to about 60 degrees. here's your next couple of days showing a high of 75 tomorrow. a pair of 67s on saturday and sunday. sunday probably the better day. either one of those looking pretty good. look at next week. oh, yeah. hello. we're going back a month, with temperatures in the mid-70s. so not bad at all there. the forecast really looking nice. we've just got to watch out for

the marine corps marathon is right around the corner. in its 36th year, this race has attracted nearly 30,000 runners who come from all over the globe to run here in our nation's capital. tonight we have the story of one of these runners who is beating the odds. >> yeah, she has a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta. its hallmark symptom is brittle bones. imagine trying to exercise with oi, let alone run a marathon. doreen gentzler has the story. >> i broke my first bone that was documented when i was about 10 months old, trying to teach myself how to walk. >> reporter: since then, 39-year-old jacqueline has broken 50 more, 50 bones, the result of falls, mishaps or even

simple everyday tasks. >> my lungs are half as thick as they're supposed to be. it's harder for me to heal when i get a cut. i bruise easier. i have gotten scoliosis because of that, so i have osteoarthritis. i'm in pain. >> reporter: it's not because she's accident prone or clumsy, she has something called osteogenesis imperfecta, a disease that causes brittle bones. so why is she running? and training for the marine corps marathon? well, she's running for her life. or rather, to prove that oi patients can have some trol over their lives. >> you have to get over that fear of do i want to live my life in fear, or just live my life. >> reporter: exercising can be intimidating for a lot of oi patients, but she said it's important to exercise.

she said running works best for her because as a mother of two, it's easier to fit into her busy schedule. >> and i just decided, nope, why not me. why not try. because if i can do that and show people that, just to have a disability does not keep you down. >> reporter: jacqueline said she needs to be careful when she runs. she keeps a slow pace and avoids training if it's raining out. but she said no matter how her final time comes out, completing the marathon is her biggest achievement of all. >> i always thought it was such a big deal, a big accomplishment, only the best of the best could do something like that. how cool would that be to say, you know, i ran a marathon once in my life. >> reporter: doreen gentzler, news4. >> the marine corps marathon takes place next sunday, october 28th. nbc 4 is one of this year's sponsors and we'll be bringing that to you live.

sadie again. but someone had dropped sadie off at a pet shelter earlier this week. the shelter was able to scan sadie's microchip. and identified brownel as the owner. >> i'm a huge proponent now more than ever of microchipping your pets. if sadie hadn't been microchipped, this would never have happened. >> the good samaritan found sadie roaming around at night near a busy intersection. she was in bad shape and had lost a lot of weight. but the good news is she's expected to recover. a literal fall trip by australia's prime minister. julia gillard was touring the gandhi memorial yesterday. take a look. her heel got stuck in some soft grass. the prime minister tripped and fell. officials helped her back to her feet and she continued on. later joking to reporters about the incident. that's going to live on. >> those heels are no joking

>> both of them on the yes side. i think we'll see showers, and yeah, maybe a couple of storms, too. some of the storms could be on the strong side. we'll, of course, watch out for those. take a look outside. national harbor, great shot from our camera down there. you can see a mixture of clouds. you can also see blue skies from time to time. you also notice the potomac, at least right there, nice and calm across the area. as far as the temperatures are concerned, over at the airport, we're currently sitting at a number of 70 degrees out there, with mostly cloudy skies. winds out of the south at 8 miles an hour, gusting to about 18 miles an hour. we're still seeing rather breezy conditions, helping to produce these temperatures that are close to that 70-degree mark. 69 in reston. 70 in rockville. 66 in gaithersburg. 67 degrees down towards huntingtown. as far as the rain is concerned right now, nothing very close.

in our immediate area. we're not seeing any rain. down to the south starting to see the rain move in from the richmond area. this is going to go right through i-95, follow right through i-95 over toward mount vernon, washington, prince george's county, portions of southern maryland will see this, fredericksburg. in the next one to two hours for you folks. we have to watch out for this. this is the line of strong to severe storms back to the west. it will move through very slowly. and by the time it gets here, most of the instability in the atmosphere will be gone. what that means is, we're not going to see a widespread severe outbreak. that's good news. still rumbles of thunder, but not all that much. here comes few showers around 6:00, 7:00 tonight. but then the heavier showers move in late tonight and into early tomorrow morning. this is 5:15 in the morning. so tomorrow morning's rush hour could be problematic. make sure you give yourself a little bit of extra time, especially if you're leaving between 5:00 and 6:00. 75 on your friday. cooling, but still nice for the

baker: please vote for question seven. leggett: vote for question seven. arizona corrections officers are out of a job. they were fired after this video surfaced of them in a street fight outside a bar in tucson. police say the men attacked four people, including a teenager. one man was kicked and punched in the head repeatedly. no word of a motive, but police describe the incident as an unprovoked attack. the corrections officers were all charged with assault. two other jail workers were also at the scene that night. they face charges for trying to cover up the whole thing. a very expensive phone bill is on the way for a telemarketers who call 911 centers. the federal communications commission voted unanimously wednesday to fine them $100,000 per call. the s.e.c. is creating a

new york city cab driver his license revoked for what surveillance caught him doing on a city street. >> the driver threw the passenger out of his cab. and when the passenger tried to get back into the cab, the driver took off with the door still open. gus rosendale tells us how all of this started. >> reporter: the passenger was allegedly drunk, vomited in the back of the cab, and wanted to go to queens. it seemed to push the 20-year cabby over the edge. he grabbed the rider, pulled him from the back seat and then flung him into the street. surveillance video shows the passenger trying to get back in the cab and get pushed away again. eventually he does manage to get back in, and the cab drives away. the back door still open. >> whoa! >> what do you think about that? >> that is really intense. >> some throw.

>> what do you think? >> i think you've got to watch out what you say to certain people. >> reporter: he said he eventually jumped out of the cab as it drove off. the wild ride began outside this japanese restaurant on an april morning around 3:00 a.m. the legal journey ended today when they took the license away from the cabby. >> even if the passenger is being very difficult, the driver needs to call the police, let the police deal with the difficult passenger. the driver cannot take matters into his own hands. >> reporter: news4 learned he had previous run-ins with taxi regulations. he once locked a passenger in the back of his cab. another time they say he pushed an inspector while getting a ticket. >> if you got in trouble, you just call the cops? >> yeah. >> the best thing to do. >> we've got a phone number. >> if you had trouble, would you call cops? you wouldn't take it in your own hands? >> in the last year, i've had no

trouble. >> you're a lucky guy. >> yes, i have no trouble. >> reporter: the tlc said a cabby can refuse a ride if a passenger is drunk, but cannot refuse a ride based on destination. news4 new york. we begin at 5:00 with breaking news in prince george's county. a police officer crashed his cruiser into a pole on branch avenue at surratts road in clinton. >> we're joined by phone now with the latest on this crash. what have you learned about how this all happened, darcy? >> let me tell you, we're not quite at the scene yet, we're on the way. but traffic is very bad in this area, as you can imagine. this is the rush hour period. and some of the roads in the area have been closed off. this happened around 3:00 this afternoon. if you can see from the video, this was a very serious crash here at surratts road and branch avenue, where the cruiser came into contact with a utility

pole. it appears at least one other vehicle was involved. it looked like a white suv. now, prince george's county police are confirming that a prince george's county police officer was seriously injured in this crash, has been transported to a local hospital. and other person believed to be in the other vehicle was also transported to the hospital. we have not been given any update in terms of condition of either person who was transported. at this point police are not giving many details about the circumstances surrounding this crash. obviously this is a time for the police department, they're dealing with a very incident involving one of their own so they're trying to get more detailed information before they release that. we don't know at this point whether he was responding to a call, or what exactly was happening at the time. but we do know a prince george's county police officer has been involved in a very serious incident. and prince george's county police are going to be holding a news conference maybe in about an hour. at that point we h
