down. >> tisha thompson is live in the studio now with just what happened. tisha? >> jim and pat, i have to tell you, this was one of the more dramatic chases we've seen in a long time, with dozens of police vehicles all over the region trying to chase down a silver crown victoria. police sources tell us maryland state police were patrolling for stolen vehicles when the crown vic flew by them on 495. that's when u.s. park police say they got involved. >> today at approximately 11:30 this morning, there was a vehicle traveling south bound on the baltimore washington parkway. it was checked and confirmed to be a stolen vehicle. u.s. park police officers started a pursuit. >> most of the chase circled through a five-block section of ward 8 near alabama avenue, before the vehicle crashed at the intersection of mississippi and south capitol in the southeast. witnesses say a police dog actually took the suspect down about a half a block away from the crash.

we'll show you more of the chase and give you the latest developments on it tonight on news4 at 5:00. pat? >> all right. thanks, tisha. it was a terrible morning for hundreds of drivers. a truck accident brought the interloop of the beltway to a screeching halt for hours. the whole ordeal started around 4:30 this morning. traffic didn't start moving there again until almost 8:00. news4's megan mcgrath has details. >> reporter: oh, the frustration. hundreds of cars and trucks stuck on the interloop for more than three hours this morning. casey maddox missed his early-morning flight. >> i was supposed to be on a flight at 6:55. total standstill. occasionally you'll see cars move a little bit, but i think that's -- i'm not even sure anyone is moving at all. >> reporter: a tractor-trailer accident was the cause of this morning's disastrous commute. work crews not only had to clear the trucks, they also had a fuel spill on their hands. all lanes of the interloop were

closed at 3:55. those who didn't exit at old georgetown road, well, they got stuck. the wait was so long, that some drivers got out of their cars to pass the time. charles was among those caught up in the mess. >> i was coming up upon old georgetown, and i seen the lights. i knew there was an issue, but i didn't realize everybody was stopped. i sort of got caught in it. we were just parked for a couple hours. >> reporter: to add insult to injury, his car then broke down in the backup, so when the lanes started to move, he was stuck on the shoulder. >> i'm waiting on a tow truck right now. >> reporter: a little before 8:00 they were able to open some of the lanes and free some of those trapped drivers. but needless to say, it was a frustrating morning for many. from the interloop, megan mcgrath, news4. coming up on news4 at 5:00, transportation reporter adam tuss will tell us why some people say this is a dangerous

stretch of the beltway. the rain has rolled out. what does that mean for our weekend? >> that's what we want to know. doug kammerer has the answer. doug? >> take a look at those shots there. just simply gorgeous out there once again. we saw a lot of cloud cover early this morning, even a little bit of light rain in some locations. but now we're seeing sunshine. and the temperatures are responding. 73 degrees with the winds out of the south at about 13 miles per hour. we're looking at a very nice afternoon right now. take a look at the numbers around the region. 72 in manassas. 76 in la plata. 78 down towards freds rickburg. to the north, a little bit cooler. hagerstown, 64. more clouds back to the north and west. nothing on the radar picture right now. notice this, here's the rain we saw last night. and here's the big storm back to the west. it still has not come through our area. so what is that going to mean for your saturday? you're going to want to stick around for this forecast.

the man accused of throwing a molotov cocktail inside ballston common mall has been charged now with arson. 29-year-old leon trail appeared in an arlington court, and alexandria's federal court today. he's accused of trying to use a firebomb to inflict harm. the incident closed ballston common mall for five hours yesterday. trail was arrested three hours after that incident. coming up at 5:00 tonight, derrick ward will have more on the search for a motive. new details about the car crash that led to the death of prince george's county police officer kevin bowden. we have information from today's press conference. >> first, officer kevin bowden was not wearing a seat belt at the time of that deadly crash. the woman driving the suv that hit his police car will be charged. the woman is 61 years old. she remains in prince george's hospital center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

prince george's county police chief mark magaw said she was in the left turn lane and at some point crossed several lanes of traffic. and her actions caused the crash. the investigation also shows officer bowden, off duty at the time, was likely driving faster than the speed limit. but not wearing a seat belt is what stands out most. >> in law enforcement, there's so many things that you cannot control. you just can't control them. we have to control the things we can. how we operate our motor vehicles and wearing a seat belt are decisions. and that's something that we're pushing down to every officer, including the command staff, rank and file, it applies to everyone on this police department. >> less than two months ago, prince george's county police officer adrian morris was killed during a car chase on i-95 in beltsville. he, too, was not wearing a seat belt at the time. we'll bring you the latest information on this story on news4, and nbcwashington.com. live in the newsroom, keith

russell, news4. thanks, keith. we are waiting a verdict in the trial of two police officers accused of beating a former university of maryland student. closing arguments wrapped up about an hour ago. prince george's county officers reginald baker and james harrison are accused of using unnecessary force against jack mckenna. this was after a raucous maryland/duke basketball game back in 2010. the defense said the use of force was justified because mckenna appeared to be acting aggressively in the middle of a riot. now that the jury has the case, news4's chris gordon will have the latest on deliberations coming up at 5:00. lawyers for george zimmerman are asking for access to trayvon martin's school records and social media posts. zimmerman's attorneys made that request today in a florida courtroom. martin's family held a simultaneous press conference. they say if the records are released, zimmerman's medical records should also be released. zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder of the

teenager. he's pleaded not guilty and is free on bail. now to the presidential race. two and a half weeks to go until the general election, and the race is tighter than ever. president obama visited george mason university in fairfax today. he unleashed a new attack on mitt romney with some stand-up comedy. news4's steve handelsman is live on capitol hill with the latest from the campaign trail. hey, steve. >> reporter: hi, pat. thanks, good evening. you've got to believe behind closed doors, neither of these presidential candidates is doing a lot of laughing. the race is so close, it's agonizing. but george mason, the president was cracking up. in northern virginia, president obama joked his opponent has a condition. >> i think it's called romnesia. >> reporter: accusing mitt romney of swerving to the middle to trick women. >> if you say you're for equal pay for equal work, but you keep

fairfax county, tyson's corner, american legion bridge, and then down to the south a heavier shower. wouldn't be surprised to see a rumble of thunder, a bolt of lightning out of this. nothing strong. just to the west of i-95, west of quantityco. you may want to take the umbrella with you tonight. most of us should remain on the dry side. these are along the i-95 corridor. if you're in and around town, you may need the umbrella, too. we've been talking how big this storm is. look at this. tons of cloud cover in the middle part of the country. chicago, cool, cloudy, rainy and damp. our rain, off to the east right now. and look where we are. we're in the dry slot here. and that dry slot allowed us to get sunshine, and that's why we're on the warmer side of things today. tomorrow, that cool cloudy conditions, that's what's going to be coming in during the day tomorrow. nice and warm today under partly cloudy skies. a few light showers this evening. tomorrow, mild, under mostly cloudy skies. i think we'll see that area of

halloween is fast approaching, and we have some spooky questions for "ask liz" tonight. can you safely wear decorative contact lenses? how do you make carved pumpkins last longer? and how do you keep squirrels from eating your jack-o'-lanterns? >> if you're going to spend money and time carving those pumpkins, you should know the answers. >> our first is about decorative contact lenses that you see people wear with their halloween costumes. some of our viewers are considering using those types of lenses. is there any risk involved when you wear them? >> there is. we checked with the fda for this question. they say you can safely wear decorative lenses as long as you follow a few simple steps. first, though, you have to get an eye exam from a licensed eye doctor, even if you think your vision is perfect. ask for a prescription that includes your lens measurement. then shop for the lenses, but only at places that require you to provide a prescription so you can make sure that the lens fits properly in your eyes.

and never buy decorative lenses from a street vendor, or a beauty supply shop or halloween store, according to the fda. see your doctor right away if you experience any eye pain, redness or have trouble with your vision. they do have some horror stories of folks who put in these lenses and damaged their corneas. >> consult the experts. >> yeah. >> okay. the next one is from colleen. she wants to know, what to do to make her carved pumpkins last a little longer. >> colleen, with the cherry hill farm in clinton, they answered this question. you can do several things to restore that moisture. try soaking the carved pumpkin in water overnight. you can also coat all of those cut surfaces of the pumpkin with petroleum jelly after carving them. the jelly seals in the moisture. other tricks like keeping the pumpkin out of direct sunlight and putting it in the refrigerator overnight, that also helps the pumpkin last

welcome back to news4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. it's got a population smaller than the district of columbia. but it's a big weekend for the tiny european country of luxembourg. >> its crown prince has just tied a knot in a civil ceremony. as duncan shows us, that's just the start of a lavish two-day royal wedding. >> reporter: for a small country, luxembourg is planning big celebrations for its royal wedding. two days starting with a civil ceremony, and including fiveworks, concerts and a gala dinner. royals from across europe will

be in attendance. it's a rare moment in the spotlight for a country smaller than rhode island with a population of just over half a million people. >> they could have all the crown princes and princesses and queens, and many people coming. it's very honorific. >> reporter: his bride is from neighboring country belgium. she will renounce her citizenship so she can eventually become leks em bourg's grand duchess. she's also learning the country's language. among other royal romances, they have so far avoided scandal and controversy. back to you. >> as for the british royalty in attendance, it won't be fellow newlyweds william and kate, but prince edward, queen elizabeth's young esht child and his wife sophie are in luxembourg for the celebration. we have storms popping up around the area. doug kammerer is in the storm center with the latest. >> most of us are done with the

rain. but we'll show you the radar picture. you can see where the storms are popping up. just about everybody is going to be dry to the west, and down to southern maryland, but look right here, right along i-95 in the beltway. we've got showers developing, and very heavy downpours right now over the american legion bridge, over to the bethesda area, potomac area, right along river road, and 495. you can see that right here. right across the potomac river. over towards tyson's corner, around mclean, langley, all seeing very heavy rain. as you move to the south, another area of rain. once again, this is fairly heavy rain along 234, just to the west of mount clair and lorton. there is some rain falling along i-95. we'll continue to watch these storms as they make their way off toward the north and east. you can see this one coming close to bethesda. most of this is going to slow traffic down. hey, on the beltway, just in time for rush hour. how about that. i'll let you know where these storms are going and what to expect over the weekend in just a few minutes. a texas icon destroyed by

fire. big tex, a 52-foot cowboy that welcomes visitors to the annual state fair, was burned in a fire this morning. all that's left of big tex is a scorched metal frame and part of the hands and sleeves. firefighters blame the blaze on an electrical problem. big tex has been part of the state fair since 1952. fair administrators say they will rebuild the icon for next year. a day off from school took a frightening turn for a young oklahoma girl. she shot an intruder after he allegedly broke into her house. kendra st. clair was home alone wednesday when she heard someone pounding on the front door. she peeked through the blinds, saw the man of the she got scared and called her mom. her mother told her to get the gun and get in the closet and call 911. >> i was sitting in the closet, really scared, holding the gun, not knowing what was going to happen. when he turned the door handle,

i shot toward him with mom's gun and it hit him right here in the arm. i was shaking. i didn't know what to do. i was kind of hesitant about the whole thing. the whole time i was scared. and sad. and i was crying. i couldn't believe it was happening. >> she set a good example. i don't know of many women or men, or young girls who would have been able to do what she did today. >> the intruder ran out of the house. police arrested a suspect a block away. he was treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound. then charged with burglary. check out this video of a store clerk in maine. in the run of her life. security video from a tobacco store in portland shows the clerk flipping over a partition as she runs away from a masked gunman, who is in hot pursuit. the woman did escape. police aren't sure if the gunman planned to rob the store or commit some other crime. the federal trade commission is going to try a new strategy to try to stop robocalls.

so the agency's looking for new ideas. and it's offering $50,000 for the best idea. nbc's danielle lee explains what's behind the ftc challenge. >> reporter: a ringing phone, often at dinnertime, and on the other end one of the last people you want to hear from. rachel is part of an infamous prerecorded targeting call with often deceptive information. without a caller's permission, these robocalls are illegal. but the perpetrators have largely eluded the ftc, often ignoring the national do-not-call list. >> it doesn't matter how often you ask them to stop calling you. >> reporter: she can't seem to silence her phone. nearly 4 million people filed complaints with the ftc, nearly twice as many as two years ago. >> technology over the past few years has made it extremely

we're heading into the weekend. and we're hoping, got our fingers crossed. >> the weekend's looking good. what's not looking good -- >> right now you've got the -- >> right now the drive home if you're thinking about going around the beltway right now, slow down. and if you're not going to slow down yourself, mother nature just may slow you down. this is looking right over towards the beltway down there, right on the potomac river. you can see a rather large area of showers. this is heavy rain that's right now falling. i have not seen any lightning or detected any with our radar. we're still seeing a chance for stronger storms trying to develop right now. this is going to be a line from, the first one towards baltimore county, right on down through our area, right along i-95, and the beltway. this is around bethesda, the rock until area and down to the south.

this cat had a bird's-eye view for about two days. but then had a neighborhood worried when it refused to come back down to earth. the stray cat climbed a telephone paul in las vegas earlier this week, and then just sat there. not even food could entice the cat to come down. the local utility and local fire department said, no, we're not coming to the rescue. finally a good samaritan, a man happened to be at the right place at the right time. he happened to have a pair of pole climbing boots, he put them on and rescued the cat which is now resting in the care of a neighbor who called the cat lucky. >> wow, pretty precarious. >> we would call that cat lucky, too. a high school kicker might be ready for the nfl now.
