good morning, welcome to news 4 midday. i'm barbara harrison. >> i'm keith russell. it's monday, october 22nd, 2012. a renewed effort to find the person who kill a prince georges county teen. he was shot and killed last month as he walk to school. today police back at the scene of the crime. news 4 is there. he joins us live this morning with the very latest. >> reporter: here's the flyer that prince georges county police were handing out. it has the picture of markel and also the nfc for the reward in this case. it was across the street where just over a month ago marquell was gunned down.

you can see the teddy bear hanging from the telephone pole as a reminder of what happened. his mother was pleading with anybody in the community with information to please come forward. >> words cannot describe how i feel. a piece of me has been taken away. and i just find it very hard to deal with it. >> it was just over a month ago central high school student markle ross was on his way to class. he was gunned down. murdered on the very sidewalk he took to school every morning. >> it's not all about my child. it's anyone's child in the community. i'm here today about. because like i said we let the murder go, someone else will be killed and it will be another mother standing here grievingward agrieve ining. >> reporter: with no leads, they took to the streets this morning, passing out this picture, advertising the reward with tips that lead to an arrest

in this senseless murder. >> we want to keep this crime in peep's mind. we want to still solicit further information. >> reporter: it was another person they hope to reach out to this morning, another victim. a person detectives believe was robbed just minutes before markle's life was taken in this same area. a person who may hold the most crucial information in this case now. >> it is important for us to get closure for this family. they're hurting right now. this whole community is hurting. the entire school at central high school is hurting. it's an important case. >> reporter: for elizabeth ross, there is no closure. hoping to find out who is responsible for killing her son and, most of all, why. >> if you know something, anything, just please come out. i know everyone is afraid. so -- but just, you know, give a tip or something to let us move forward. i can't move forward if i don't find out who killed my son. >> reporter: keith and barbara, prince georges county police department wants to stress that anybody with information can

remain anonymous. they can either call crime stopperses or call the prince georges county police department. we're live in capital heights. tony tall, news 4. new today, d.c. mayor vincent gray honored the security guard shot and injured in the line of duty at the family research council in downtown washington. this morning, the mayor presented leo johnson with the medal of honor. johnson is credited with disarming a gunman who opened fire in the lobby of the conservative group's office in august. the gunman shot johnson in the arm. johnson was able to restrain him before he got any further into the building. turning to the weather now. nice out there. chilly start though. looks like it's warming up out there now. >> yes, it does. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kieran with the first forecast. >> well, the autumn color is really coming on strong. we'll show you some beautiful photos sent in by some of our viewers here coming up shortly. right now, under this clear sky, looking at the view from space,

big area of high pressure over our region giving us this gorgeous day. up and down the atlantic seaboard from new england to florida, just beautiful. they're getting a few sprinkles in central kentucky. that little disturbance passing just to our north. right now, around the region, just past the 11:00, reagan national now at 61. and it has climbed now into the upper 50s to near 60 throughout most of maryland and most of virginia. right near the eastern shore, most locations there into the low and mid-60s. out of the mountains now, it is in the 50s. low 50s where they had a freeze this morning. a look at the rest of the week and the weekend. a warm-up on the way. details in just a few moments. >> this morn, soing some metro riders had an easier time getting to the train. back open with three new

escalators. megan mcgrath reports. >> reporter: after years of dealing with broken down escalators, customers have a new ride. some riders cheered. >> love it. >> reporter: after an 8 1/2 month overhaul, the south entrance of the dupont circle metro has reopened. three brand-new escalators now transport riders up to 19th street. >> much more convenienconvenien. brighter, cleaner. i'm glad it's convenient for me to get to work on time. >> reporter: the old escalators were notorious for breaking down. often forcing commuters to walk the more than 100 steps to street level. >> i've counted before. it was better when i didn't count actually. >> reporter: metro officials say the new ones are different, a more sturdy design that should hold up better. >> these are brand-new industrial grade or transit

grade. it's a new classification for escalators that are more rugged. we know that they will provide more reliable service. >> reporter: to do the work, the south entrance was completely shut down for months. it was tough on businesses who saw a drop in foot traffic. so at krispy kreme, they were celebrating the reopening this morning. >> it was a little difficult. you miss your regulars. you miss a lot people who come in regularly. so that's why we're super excited. almost like a grand opening all over again. >> reporter: this work is part of a larger escalator overhaul that's happening in the system. next up is the pentagon station. then comes work at the north entrance of dupont circle. then in 2014, bethesda is on tap for an overhaul. >> prince georges county will pay about $3.6 million to ten people who were either falsely arrested or injured by police after a maryland duke basketball game. $2 million will go to john

mckenna. he was seen on video being beaten by police. a student celebrated the maryland win back in march of 2010. the rest of the cash will go to the other nine plaintiffs. one of the officers was acquitted. the other, james harrison, was convicted of second degree assault. harrison will be sentenced in december. he faces up to ten years behind bars. the redskins came close but they could not make it two in a row yesterday. they faced the defending super bowl champion new york giants on the road. the skins took the lead with less than two minutes to play but eli manning did what he does best. >> on a third down and two. as manning looks to cruz. and he will race to the end zone. >> manning and victor cruz, we've heard that before. but how did cruz get that wide open so late in the game? redskins lose, they fall two games behind the giants. a giant loss in more ways than

tonight's debate may be the candidate's last chance in a race that appears to be far from decided. president obama and mitt romney are tied nationally. in the latest poll, the president held a slim three percent lead in that poll before the first two debates. help leads his republican rival by five points among all registered voters at this time. both candidates running mates will be campaigning today in battleground states. republican paul ryan will spend today in colorado. he arrived there yesterday and spoke to about 1,000 supporters in colorado springs. vice president biden will be in ohio for the next three days. he'll visit canton and lorraine, ohio, today, before heading to toledo for the evening. >> both candidates in the virginia senate race will try to win over jewish voters this week. republican george allen spent this morning at the juish community center in fairfax. like the race for president, virginia senate race is extremely close.

that race is getting tight. >> we are all winners today with the weather out there the way it is. it's warming up too. started off kind of cold. >> some locations were at freezing this morning, right around dawn. but it has warmed up dramatically. we are on pace to have peak autumn color in washington this coming weekend. that's pretty much right on schedule. look at the trees there. a few individual streets along the potomac river. right along the jefferson memorial and the washington monument. showing some nice color. right now, reagan national with the bright sunshine is at 61 degrees. we've got a very light southeasterly breeze now. it is comfortably dry. we have some gorgeous autumn color around the region. this photo taken by one of our viewers along georgetown pike in fairfax county. this was taken yesterday by ur who was traveling along there.

gorgeous canopy there. in west virginia, there's some gorgeous color though it is past peak, higher elevation. send your photos to weath weather@nbcwashington.com. there is beautiful fall autumn color there. northern montgomery county. temperatures around the region hovering around the upper 50s. right around the metro area, right around the check piece bay in the mid-60s. farther west where we did have the freeze, central shenandoah valley into the mountains. many of those locations were right near 30 degrees. generally in the 40s to low 50s there. here's the wider view. all these areas in the light green are in the 50s. and farther west there, where you see the dark green still in the 50s, and that includes much of western maryland and the

right now, police and family members back in action trying to figure out who killed a prince georges county teenager. he was shot and killed as he walked to school last month in capital heights. investigators hope to find more clues today from the scene as well as from potential witnesses. police are offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest. president obama and mitt romney are getting their final preparations in right now for their third and final debate. it will take place in boca raton, florida, and will focus on foreign policy. the candidates are tied among likely voters. cycling's biggest star for more than a decade.

seven titles now gone. cycle's governing body has agreed to strip him of his titles. the announcement was made just a few hours ago. >> just the last few weeks, lance armstrong has lost endorsements,tepped down from his live strong charity, and now he's been stripped of his seven tour de france titles that made him a legend. the international cycling union has accepted the report on armstrong, which bans the cyclist from the tour for life. they say his vacated titles should not be given to other riders. the agency's 200-page report says there's overwhelming evidence of widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs. armstrong decided to stop fighting the allegations in august.

two weeks ago. investigators say 45-year-old radcliffe hauton's wyche had a restraining order against him. three women were killed, four others hurt. one of those victims is in critical condition. witnesses say they heard gunshots and saw smoke. shortly after hauton walked in the building. >> we saw all the cops pulling out their guns. >> i seen a girl in her 20s holding a towel to her neck because she was bleeding from her neck. >> police spent hours searching for him. they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. today jury selection begins for former fbi agent on trial for the deathf killed in a drunk driving crash. prosecutors say adrian johnson's blood alcohol level was three

times the legal limit when his car collided with another killing 18-year-old lawrence conner jr. johnson faces nine charges including vehicular manslaughter. if convicted, he could face up to 13 years in prison. after the crash, he lost his job with the fbi. searching for the person who attacked a woman jogging in bethesda. on the capital trail near brookway drive. police say the 20-year-old woman was knocked unconscious and dragged into the woods. police are not releasing any details about the attacker. the pharmacy at the center of a nationwide meningitis outbreak is facing a wave of lawsuits. at least 12 people who received steroid injections made by the center have filed complaints. health experts believe more lawsuits will be filed.

age of 90. today, former cuban leader fidel castro criticizing media reports that said he was on his death bed. the 86-year-old wrote an article saying he doesn't remember what a headache feels like. the article also included new pictures of castro taken friday. just yesterday, venezuela's former vice president released a picture of castro. he said the two met for five hours over the weekend at a hotel in cuba. this week, the defense is expected to call actor george clooney to the stand in the sex trial against former italian prime minister silvio berlusconi. the 76-year-old claims the movie star can help prove his case that he did not have sex with an underage show girl. the accuser said she saw clooney at a party thrown by berlusconi. clooney says that's not true. berlusconi is accused of paying a 17-year-old girl for sex and abusing his power in an attempt to cover it up. we have ara

liveability factor here. that's always good stuff. turning to the major averages. we've got them struggling to stay in positive territory. after heavy equipmentmaker caterpillar says it is weaker than expected. the nasdaq is up 3. the s&p down 3. cat pill, the world's largest construction and mining equipmentmaker, cut its forecast for full-year revenue and income worldwide. 2012 profit, about $9.25 a share on revenue of $66 billion. earlier estimates had profits this year at about $9.41 a share. ougautomaker nissan recalling nearly 14,000 of its top selling ultima sedans. the issue bolts that may not have been tightened. they could fall off, according to government safety regulators. made between may 10th and july

scientists confirm the rock was part of the meteor shower that streaked across the try above the san francisco bay area just last week. scientists are now searching the area for other space rocks. what's it like to sky dive from 24 miles above earth's surface? the only man who has done that is describing his experience. felix baumgartner opened up about his record setting jump this morning on the "today" show. he said he had to use his year of experience sky diving to gain control after beginning to spin out of control. baumgartner spent five years training for this jump. amazingly, he said he didn't enjoy it till it was over. >> i was standing on top of the world. you realize everything around is hostile and i thought, i have the privilege to stand where nobody else will stand before. you step off along the way. >> did you enjoy it at all? >> honestly, no. this is work, you know.

a delightful day. overnight tonight, mostly clear this evening. few clouds around tomorrow, around 50 degrees. tuesday, partly cloudy and warmer. the upper 70s tomorrow afternoon. on wednesday, even warmer. a little touch of summer in the air. wednesday afternoon, around 80. the record is 84 set on that day back in 2001 for that date. that's the record for the date. and it's going to be near there. and then on thursday and friday, the delightful pattern continues into the weekend. >> all right, tom, thank you. >> i'll take all of it. we end with a story about a bomb sniffing dog named hatch. the 6-year-old dog worked with marines in afghanistan. at one point in his career, he was even injured in the line of duty. now he has a new job in the nation's capital. >> he is on his first day in the metro system. he's fully trained. we're performing acclamations. i think coming from repelling

out of helicopters and being in afghanistan, i think he thinks the metro system is pretty easy. these dogs walked foot patrol after foot patrol. from the stories we heard, they slept in the sleeping bags with their handlers in afghanistan. they were military working dogs. but they slept with their handlers, lived with their handlers. we found when we brought them back here, they're great with our families. my kids go outside and play fetch with him. and they have an incredible drive. when they come to work, it's work. he starts in the morning till he goes at night. he's going 100 miles an hour. the public love him. the good thing is, people are not afraid of labradors particularly. they obviously know he's a working dog. he is great with people. great with children. >> hatch injured his two front paws when a bomb exploded last year in afghanistan. he's recovered from those injuries. he surfed four years in
