darnstown road and berryville road. chopper 4 was above the scene just a few moments ago. firefighters say the cyclist was taken to a local trauma center with serious life-threatening injuries. children were on the bus at the time of the crash. no word on whether anyone on the bus was injured. but we are following this story and we'll bring you more details just as soon as we get them. breaking news near los angeles where a gunman has opened fire at a business and a nearby home. three people have died, two others are wounded. right now investigators are still searching for that shooter. a neighbor describes the business as a family-owned fire extinguisher company. this is all happening in the city of downey, about 20 miles from los angeles. good afternoon, everybody. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. a big weather story developing right now. hurricane sandy could have a big impact on us. >> storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson is keeping a close eye on this.

>> confidence has really been increasing with each computer models, guidance we look at. the storm system sandy, as a hurricane, could move very close to the east coast in that time period of the end of the weekend. and through the early part of next week. let's talk about it here. today, of course, w50e6 had clouds moving through. storm system right now far koun down to our south. you can see some of the northernmost part of the cloud shield hitting areas of southern florida right now. the position on sandy as a hurricane has winds of 80 miles per hour. you can see right there, over jamaica. it's been producing a lot of rain and battering areas of jamaica with quite a bit of wind today as a category 1. later it will be making its way through eastern -- over eastern parts of cuba, then on to the southeastern bahamas with its track to the north, and again, very close to the coast in that time period for the early part of next week. here's what we know for today. what we're going to be seeing,

this storm sandy, hurricane getting very close to the east coast for the end of the week and early part of next week. could be a destructive storm system for some. i'll give you more details on what i think we'll get around here. today, of course, it was a warm one with our temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. 82 degrees right now in manassas. near record warmth today. i'll have more details on sandy, its track all the way up the coast and what we could see around here monday and tuesday of next week. now to a politician's controversial comments about abortion in cases of rape. the comments of some republicans including mitt romney distancing themselves for a candidate for the senate. that candidate is still standing by what he said. >> yes, he is. this is not how you meant to say it, but putt, yoyou're right, h what he said.

some are finding multiple ballots in the mailbox and whether you need to worry about voter fraud. tisha thompson is investigating the ballot problems for us. a developing story this afternoon. the tunisian government said it has arrested a man reportedly linked to the u.s. consulate attack in libya last month. a government official said the 28-year-old is in custody now. right now the u.s. state department is not commenting about the arrest. earlier this month, two other tunisian men were arrested in turkey. ambassador christopher stevens and three others died in the embassy attack september 11th. a former employee is suspected of opening fire inside a mega church. one person was killed. it happened here this morning at the world changer's church international. police are searching now for 52-year-old floyd palmer. they consider him armed and dangerous. world changer's church international is one of the largest churches in the country with 30,000 followers.

right out of your wallet. >> watch jay leno this evening right after news4 at 11:00. we have breaking news now out of fairfax county. chopper 4 is over a massive house fire right now in lorton. this blaze broke out about 3:00 in the 8400 block of sullenberger court. as you can see in the live picture, flames destroyed the roof of the house. the blaze was brought under control in less than half an hour. no word on what caused this fire. residents were not home at the time. singer bobby brown has been arrested again on suspicion of drunk driving for the second time this year. they pulled him over this morning in los angeles. he was booked and released on $25,000 bail. brown pleaded no contest to dui earlier this year. brown was married to whitney houston, who died in february from an accidental drowning. turning now to the weather. veronica is here with the latest word about our weather and

hurricane sandy. >> right. hurricane sandy as we look toward the weekend and next week, this could be a very big storm system for parts of the east coast. right now we know today, it's been pounding areas of jamaica. there's certainty on what it will do for cuba and southeastern bahamas, then on beyond that, chances are pretty high, about 60%, 70% chance that part of the east coast will be impacted with rain and wind. let's talk about what we know right now as we head over to the weather wall. as far as the confidence on sandy's track, here we go. right near the coast, the confidence is up on that track, with a lot of the computer models now coming on board and taking it in that direction, or many of them. major problems for the east coast. and again, a destructive storm, this system could be for some with some heavy rain and possible flooding. out there right now today, we've got 79 degrees. we got rid of the clouds and even the morning sprinkles, 79 degrees. plenty warm with some locations

just down to the south getting into the low and mid-80s, from warrenton, prince william county, fredericksburg, and culpepper, 81 to 85 degrees. we could easily tie the record high temperature for today. so in the short term, again, we've got areas of clearing skies, high pressure moves in, and don't have to go too far to notice this. again, the outer most edge of what is sandy, as a hurricane right now. the clouds hitting areas around key west and miami. you can see the spin there as it comes right over jamaica. so it's on to areas of cuba, and then the bahamas, with that track as a hurricane, going right to the east of florida. very close to florida. again, a lot of the guidance taking the storm system more and more toward the outer banks of north carolina, toward areas of delaware, and even coastal new jersey. so it could weaken as it makes

its way through the bahamas. then it will have chance to strengthen again. this could be a very strong storm wa high impact of wind and rain on sunday for areas through north carolina, southeastern areas of virginia, areas around norfolk and virginia beach. and then on toward rehoboth and ocean city on sunday, with rain and wind. saturday, we're okay. but then on monday, monday it looks like the day when we could be impacted the highest. monday and early tuesday, with rain and wind. we could be looking at winds as the storm system makes its way northward about 60 miles per hour for several hours on monday. we're talking a lot of rain, too, with a slow-moving system. coastal areas get hit the hardest with coastal flooding, heavy rain. and that means power outages, too, possible with that sustained wind. here we go in our forecast for the evening. a few clouds. we're very warm. 73 to 78 degrees.

from the storm team 4 weather center. >> yeah, that's right. we continue to look at the guidance again. we're talking about the potential for storm system here with a major impact. the early part of next week. the potential with some of the guidance that we have seen, and how it's been trending more toward the coast. so as far as our weather right now today, absolutely gorgeous. we've got really two more great days coming our way on thursday and friday. take a look at our shot from that camera, live atop the gaylord national resort. gorgeous there with the nice blue sky. just a few clouds. of course, we had the sprinkles and more clouds early part of the day. temperatures right now, mid 70s to low 80s. college park, green belt coming in at 83. by tomorrow morning, we're going to be starting out in the 50s. but you know what, mild. so a lot of folks getting by without even a jacket. by the afternoon, we expect to see highs back in the upper 70s tomorrow. i'll have more on sandy's track

coming up in a couple of minutes. a man has been sentenced now for leading police on a high-speed chase down a philadelphia runway. a passenger jet had to abort its landing back in march when kenneth mozak crashed through a gate and led police down the runway more than 100 miles an hour. today a judge ordered him to serve 16 months in prison and pay $92,000 in restitution. two new jersey towns are imposing curfews for trick or treaters this halloween. north of new york city are requiring anyone under 18 to be accompanied by a parent after 8:00 at night. there have been 15 reports of adults attempting to lure children in that area in the past month. barnes & noble is warning customers about a security breach at stores in night states. they said hackers tampered with the devices used to swipe debit and credit cards.

the cfpb was created as a result of the consumer protection act of 2010. if you do have a problem with your credit, you still need to try to resolve that with the credit reporting company directly before going to the cfpb for help. danielle lee, nbc news. disappointing study for women in the workplace. a new report released today shows that one year after graduating from college, women earn only 82% of what men with the same job earn. the american association of university women looked at graduates from the 2007 to 2008 school year. on average, men made nearly $43,000, while women earn just over $35,000. the health care and education fields were the only field that provided equal pay for men and women. there's a familiar name today at the top of the list of richest americans. a company called wealth x just released that list of wealthiest americans by state.

to do here in storm center4. let's see what's going on right now on radar. you can see just how dry it is here. down south, all the way south, down across the sunshine state, you can see just a few showers. even a few thunderstorms just east of miami right now. some storms already coming across cuba. again, these are some of the outer-most rain bands of hurricane sandy which is a category 1 storm right now. off to jamaica, and areas of eastern cuba, right into the southeastern bahamas. the other thing that we know for sure is the next two days are going to be pretty nice around here. we're not going to get up to 80, or 80-plus degrees, but it's still going to be plenty nice. for tomorrow, mostly sunshine across the area. and we'll be getting into the low and mid-70s. then on friday, there will be a few clouds coming back into the area. it will be a partly sunny day for us on friday. now, on saturday we're going to see clouds increase. it's going to be a partly sunny

to mostly cloudy day on saturday. there will be some showers coming into the area with a cold front. this is a complex storm system, not just sandy paralleling the coast, but it's also another system coming in from the west. and that's why our thinking is that areas north across new england could be hit the hardest with a lot of rain and especially some wind as these storm systems may try to fade. looks as though there's a potential of high impact, 80% chance of wind and rain around here with a low impact. 20% chance we'll just have light wind and no rain at all. so count on at least something right now. by the time we get into monday, some 60-mile-per-hour winds possible throughout much of the mid-atlantic area right up into pennsylvania. so that's the way it's looking right now. we will all through all of our shows continue to keep you updated. as far as the next four days, low to mid-70s. cooler for saturday. and dry.

that's when training for the driver really paid off. >> reporter: nicko is like many high school students who like to have fun at school. he's a self-admitted practical joker. but last week riding in the back of the school bus on the way home he accidently swallowed a plastic ice cube. you can see him reaching out for help. but his friends first thought he was joking. >> no, that's something you don't joke about. it's not funny. >> reporter: in fact, his airway was blocked. he couldn't breathe. >> i had blurriness, like covering my eyes. like starting to my peripheral. i couldn't see anything, but like a blink of light. >> reporter: lucky for niko he was on jim mcintier's bus. he's retired and got extensive training on safety and life saving. >> i thought, i'll never use
