flooded ravine. one person in jamaica was also killed when he was struck by a boulder. a tropical storm warning now in effect for palm beach beach county florida and the treasure coast. although it is unlikely sandy will make landfall in florida, this storm will likely pass close enough to generate some unfavorable conditions for the weekend. we'll have some live reports from florida coming up later this morning. >> tom kierein closely monitoring the track of this storm and wondering how it's going to affect us in this area. >> yeah, unfortunately there is a risk that this storm -- it's probably not going to be a hurricane by the time it comes up our way, but it may affect our weather beginning sunday and into the first part of next week. i have the latest details coming up in just a couple seconds. but first, what's happening right now? right outside our door. well, no hurricanes. and no storms. no rain. beautiful morning under way. just a few clouds east of washington and around the bay. otherwise, a clear sky and temperatures right now around the region are on the cool side after yesterday's dreamy coue

of hours of summer-like weather, now back down to the 50s, most of maryland and virginia including montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's counties. it's getting chilly, though. many locations there in the mountains are in the upper 40s. here is the latest satellite view of sandy, category 2 hurricane passing over eastern cuba. winds are down a little bit. this is the very latest update. just came in a few minutes ago. throughout the day today, maybe maintain category 2 strength for another maybe 12 hours, then back down to a 1 by tomorrow as it passes over the bahamas, takes a right turn west of bermuda, then takes a turn to the north an a little bit farther to the west, coming close to us, it could track anywhere within this zone. this is 2:00 a.m. tuesday's position, so beginning sunday, the effects may be on monday and into tuesday. for today though, beautiful day. enjoy afternoon highs into the mid 70s. sunrise 7:28.

this morning. this all began around 12:30 with a car accident on massachusetts avenue. >> havina little trouble with megan's microphone there. we can tell you it started with a car crash on massachusetts avenue. the driver was pulled over, police intended to cite him for driving drunk. he apparently took off on foot, according to d.c. police, ran to the russian embassy on wisconsin avenue, jumped the fence there, and then, of course, was taken into custody by russian authorities. secret service had to step in, negotiated for 90 minutes with the russian officials, and were able to have him released into american custody. today a cease fire is expected to begin in syria to mark a muslim hollywood day. rebel forces continue their attacks. a suicide car bomb killed at least six people in damascus yesterday. rebel leaders say it was a present for president bashar

al assad. the syrian government agreed to a cease-fire. this morning, ecuador is asking britain for assurance that julian assange will not be arrested if he needs to leave the embassy property for medical treatment. he has been inside the ecuador's embassy since june. assange maintains his innocence, but he's worried that if he returns to sweden, he could be sent to the u.s. to face charges over publishing classified documents. as far as his health, britain's foreign service office says they don't know of any medical concerns, despite reports, he's lost of lot of weight. we've just learned the family of a pakistani teen activist shot in the head by the taliban is now on the way to the uk to see her for the very first time. they left pakistan this morning. they're scheduled to land in about five hours. malala's mother, father, and two

brothers are expected to make the flight. they'll be briefed on her condition, then reunited. she's been there for about a week and they haven't seen her in that time. doctors say she's stable. she was, of course, shot on her way home from school earlier this month. president obama is getting an early start to another busy day on the campaign trail. he's set to land less than two hours from now in tampa. it will be the first stop on a day that will also take in two rallies in richmond and cleveland. the president will also stop in chicago this afternoon to vote. he'll end the day back here in washington. mitt romney will focus his campaign efforts in ohio. he is spending a whole day in the buckeye state with visits to cincinnati, worthington, and defiance. the republican presidential nominee has good reason to campaign hard in ohio. no gop nominee has ever lost there and won the white house. romney's running mate will campaign today in virginia. paul ryan will speak this afternoon in bristol. he'll also stop in charlottesville this evening. romney will return to virginia

this weekend, he has events scheduled in haymarket, richmond and virginia beach on sunday. the son of virginia congressman jim moran says he doesn't want to be a distraction. patrick moran resigned from his father's campaign following accusations he tried to help commit voter fraud. undercover video from the group surfaced recently, showing what looks like moran talking to a man claiming to be a field director who is concerned about the election. he talks to patrick moran about trying to skirt virginia voter i.d. laws to cast multiple ballots. moran suggests forging utility bills to try and get around those laws. the group's leader james o'keefe says it's proof that voter fraud is a real problem in this election. >> we don't think this is a partisan issue to expose weaknesses. voter fraud is a problem. it's a problem, period. and it's not necessarily a left or right issue. it's just an issue and it's a fact that needs to be addressed. >> patrick moran released a statement following his

resignation and said that he thought the man was joking, and in hindsight, he should have walked away immediately. jim moran's campaign also released a statement saying that pat had a clear error in judgment. virginia attorney general ken cuccinelli is now stepping into a politically carjacked investigation into possible voter fraud. the state's republican controlled board elections authorized the investigation yesterday and asked cuccinelli to get involved. it senters arou ecenters around hired for the republican party who now faces criminal charge for allegedly destroying voter registration forms. the parent company is already being investigated in florida for more than 200 allegations of voter fraud. coming up, a shooting inside a megachurch in atlanta. this morning, the ties the suspected gunman has to the d.c. area. lee boyd malvo's new revelations from prison in an exclusive interview. what he has to say about his actions as a d.c. sniper and who he now wants to reach out to. and another nice day on tap

d.c. area sniper lee boyd malvo says he was sexually abused. malvo says his accomplice abused him for years until the two were arrested ten years ago. he made the revelation in an exclusive interview with nbc's matt lauer. malvo also complains that police still don't know everyone he and mohamed killed. he says he's tried to reach out to those victims' families. >> without anyone contacting me, i reached out and i did that, in five different instances in different states. but there was a point in time where psychologically, i couldn't handle it. this is reality. in here, i have no one. i have to take care of myself. >> you catch matt lauer's entire phone interview with lee boyd

malvo on "today." five family members were shot yesterday after police say a man started shooting inside their business in suburban l.a. then went to their nearby home and continued firing. police don't believe the man ever worked for the family and they don't believe he's related. this morning, that gunman is still on the loose. police believe he took off in the family's car. the colorado teen accused of murdering a 10-year-old girl will be in court today. 17-year-old austin sigg turned himself into police tuesday night after his mother called authorities. earlier this month, jessica ridgeway went missing on her way to school. her body was found five days later in a nearby field. sigg will also face charges for trying to abduct a woman back in may while she was jogging. the man who police say shot a man yesterday at a georgia megachurch was once in a maryland mental health facility. police say 51-year-old floyd palmer was charged with attempted murder, assault and handgun charges in baltimore in 2001.

he was released in 2005. yesterday police say palmer shot and killed a church volunteer outside world changers church international. that church is run by naa nationally known televangelist. the reverend jesse jackson is among at least a dozen people arrested at a factory in illinois. jackson joined a group of employees who were demanding to speak to plant management. the group was warned that they would be arrested if they came on to factory property, but the protesters linked arms and walked on anyway. the company which is owned by bane capital is in the process of closing the plant and moving those jobs to china. a police officer and e.r. doctor are being held as heroes. a 74-year-old woman collapsed in a parking lot. the officer and an e.r. doctor both saw it happening and rushed

into action. it's something the officer says he has never experienced in his ten-year career. >> before you know it, she's taking a breath, she's moving a little bit and you're just thinking to yourself, i can't believe this is actually happening. >> the woman is expected to fully recover. today, we'll get an update on the purple line. prince george's county is hosting a purple line business summit in green belt to discuss the economic impact of that proposed line. the 16-mile light rail line would extend from new carolton to bethesda in montgomery county. those in favor say more than 60,000 people ride the rail every day. it would connect to metro's red, green, and orange lines as well as to the mark trains and amtrak. a three-day-long health and fitness expo kicks off today to get the region ready for the 37th annual marine corps marathon. the expo serves as the check-in for the nearly 34,000 runners taking part, but more than 200

streng strength. it is a category 2 hurricane. it is moving rapidly north at about 20 miles an hour. and on this pace, it's going to be passing close to the bahamas later today and into tomorrow. it will be di minute iminishinga category 1 hurricane. the latest track takes it northeast for -- it does look like during the day on saturday. late on sunday and very early monday morning, it may be off of cape hat rteras, but it does sh a trend that it will be tracking farther northwest. there's a wide area of uncertainty. storm team 4 is on it. we'll be keeping you fully informed. but unfortunately, if it does track this far west, we could get a lot of rain and wind from that system, and that would begin on sunday, but between now and then, pleasant autumn weather. highs today, mid 70s.

he will eventually be laid to rest here in washington. the vice president also reaching out to breast cancer survivors. he and his wife hosted a reception last night for survivors and breast cancer advocates at their home. the vice president says there is reason to believe doctors will find a cure for that disease. there's been incredible progress made, incredible progress made. it's gone from being 34 years ago, we started talking about it, viewed as a death warrant, as something that -- i can survive this, i can survive this. >> joe biden founded the biden breast cancer initiative 20 years ago. october is breast cancer awareness month. there is reason for hope for people suffering from a different form of cancer. doctors say aspirin may help colon cancer patients with certain genetic mutations. they say patients who took aspirin regularly lived longer than those who did not. about a sixth of all colon cancer patients have the mutated

genes. patients getting chemo therapy for mistaken cancer believed that chemo could cure them completely. close to 70% of patients believe that chemo could cure them. doctors say chemo can help extend their lives, but it is rarely a cure for late stage cancer. they say that patients should still get chemo treatments, but understand what it can and cannot do. they are calling it a controlled catastrophe. one of the tallest smokestacks in poland came down yesterday. that is all it took, and then very slowly, this 490-foot-tall power station came right on down. engineers used 200 explosive charges to take out that concrete and brick structure. bam, right there. it looked like a slow motion -- it was in slow motion as that

a little fog forming. the view from space is showing a little bit of that fog under a mostly clear sky. a little area of light gray. elsewhere, we're mostly clear. the areas in the blue are in the 40s. parts of west virginia and western maryland. but closer to washington, the dark green areas, that is in the 50s. and it's roiight in the low 60s east of washington under cloud cover with the fog. latest with sandy now, it is passing over eastern cuba with a lot of rain and wind. the latest statistics on sandy is that the winds have diminished overnight but it's still a category 2 hurricane with the sustained winds. maintaining category 1 strength going north and east, and by monday, taking a turn to the west. unfortunately, it may be getting closer to our coast. as a result, here are some of the impacts for us. by sunday, we'll begin seeing the effects of the wind and the

just happened the past couple of minutes here. wikileaks has started releasing more than 100 classified files from the department of defense. the files are from the past decade. they'll be released over the next month, including information on guantanamo bay, procedures in detention camps as well as detailed interrogation manuals. we'll have more of that coming up. the trial begins today of two people accused of giving alcohol to minors killed in a crash. prosecutors say debbie franco and her son joshua gave alcohol to three teenagers before a january 28th crash in krofton. police say britney walker was driving the wrong way along route 50 when she slammed into another car. walker, zachary rose and franco's daughter brianna and the other driver died in that crash. a former university of maryland stubt who threatened to go on a campus shooting rampage will be sentenced today. alexander song was arrested in march after posting online that he was going to "kill enough

people to make it national news." in august, he pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace. song is already banned from campus and required to do 200 hours of community service. he faces three years in prison, but prosecutors plan to recommend more community service, probation, and mental health treatment. today, the two opposing protests groups head to gallaudet university to demonstrate for the same thing. both supporters and opponents of gay marriage are calling for the reinstatement of the chief diversity officer angela mccaskill. dr. mccaskill was placed on paid leave for signing a petition that forced a referendum on maryland's gay marriage law. ministers who support gay marriage have already planned a rally. the national black church initiative signed on as well. mccaskill says she signed that petition to leave the decision up to voters. prince george's county teachers have a new contract this morning and it includes plans for a pay hike. "the washington post" reports the school board unanimously

approved a three-year contract with the teachers union last night. teachers get a 2% pay raise as a result of that. that is the first raise many have gotten in three years. the new deal also addresses paid leave, teachers' rights, and working from home. the d.c. area is getting younger. new analysis of census bureau data shows that our region is drawing record numbers of young adults, and while those over 55 are moving out. in the past three years alone, the median age of the d.c. area resident has dropped by six months to just about 36 years old. washington also now has the largest population of 25 to 34-year-olds in the nation. researchers say the jobs, decent incomes, even during the recession have driven many young adults to move to this area. all right. good for us. >> absolutely. come up this morning, the moment of new beginnings ahead today after that east coast earthquake more than a year ago. how last night's game 1 of

getting into a physical altercation with another walmart who police say is his girlfriend. police are offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. this morning, police are asking for your help to find four burglary suspects. police say the men used a stolen credit card at a fast-food restaurant in silver spring. the crowd was taken from a house along richie avenue earlier this month. if you recognize any of these men, call police immediately. a cyclist remains in the hospital this morning after being hit by a school bus in montgomery county. the accident yesterday around 4:00 p.m. off of darnstown road. police say an adult male was riding that bicycle when he went into the front of the bus. it is not clear what led to the crash. none of the students onboard at the time of the crash was hurt. the cyclist was last listed in critical condition. funeral arrangements are now in place for a prince george's county police officer killed in a car crash. kevin bowden died last thursday after an suv collided with his cruiser in clinton. he was off duty at the time. the first viewing is friday night at lee's funeral home in

clinton. his funeral will be held on saturday. hip-hop and fashion mogul sean combs is reportedly okay of a car crash. combs was a passenger in an suv that was hit by another car in front of the beverly hills hotel. these pictures from "tmz" were taken moments after the accident. combs reportedly complained of pain, but said he would seek his own medical attention. no one from either vehicle went to the hospital. tom cruise is suing "in touch" and life and style magazines for $50 million. this is because of articles regarding his 6-year-old daughter suri. the lawsuit refers to two cover stories published by the magazines in july and september with the headlines "abandoned by daddy" and "abandoned by her dad." cruise and suri's mother katie holmes was divorced earlier this year. so far the magazine publishers have not commented. cruise's lawyer says if the actor wins, he'll give the money to charity. today, some alexandria residents will tell city leaders where they believe flood wall should be built to protect their

homes. they'll be at a public meeting to hear the results of a flood reduction study. the army corps of engineers conducted the study to come up with the best way to protect the bell haven water shed. hurricane isabel damaged more than 200 homes there in 2003. tonight's meeting is scheduled for 7:00 at the south county government center. 14 months after the east coast earthquake, and louisa county is moving forward with planning to build a new elementary school. teachers, students and parents will be on hand for the ground breaking ceremony at the new thomas jefferson elementary school. last august's 5.8 magnitude earthquake destroyed the school. since then, classes have been held on mobile unit. school administrators say the new elementary school should be ready to open at the beginning of the 2014 school year. time for weather and traffic. we are tracking hurricane sandy. more specifically, tom is doing that. >> yeah, that's right.
