right now, the presidential candidates are trying to squeeze out every last minute before the election. making multiple stops in critical states while trying to gain an advantage in the polls. now, a closer look at the final hours of the campaign from the news 4 superscreen. >> we are less than 24 hours away from the polls opening in decision 2012 and the race for president is in a statistical dead heat. this is the latest nbc

news/"wall street journal" poll showing the president with just a 1% lead over mitt romney among likely voters nationwide. 48% to 47%. that is well within the margin of error of 2.5%. the candidates crisscrossing the country again today looking for an edge in swing states. president obama made stops in ohio, as well as wisconsin and iowa. all this before heading to chicago where he plans to spend election day. mitt romney just wrapped up a rally down in florida and emphasized the importance of the battleground state. >> your work is making a difference. the people of the world are watching. we can begin a better tomorrow tomorrow. with the help of the people in florida, that's exactly what's going to happen. >> ultimately, it's up to you. you have the power. you will be shaping the decisions for this country for

decades to come right now. >> ohio and new hampshire will also play host to romney today, as will virginia, including a rally at george mason this afternoon. the commonwealth with mitt romney trailing the president with just 1%. >> how hot is this election? d.c. residents have turned out in record numbers to votes. the board of elections estimates 52,000 residents voted early. more than double the number of people who voted early in 2010 when early voting started in d.c. it was worth the wait for a lot of voters. some had to wait in line at least two hours to cast their ballot. >> and with less than 24 hours to go before marylanders hit the polls, today governor martin o'malley will hit three separate rally. first, the rally supporting the gaming referendum. it will start at 10:15 at

baltimore's inner harbor. governor o'malley will then attend two rallies for marriage equality. the first rally will take place right at the federal hill. the second rally will be held at 3:00 this afternoon at the university of maryland. and those are just two of the ballot initiatives marylanders will be voting on in this election. news 4 megan mcgrath breaks down some of the contentious issues and the impact results could have on the state. >> tomorrow of course is election day. a big voter turnout is expected. we're here at the prince georges county board of elections. you can see a number of people have com to fill out absentee ballots today. many more though will be going to their traditional polling places beginning at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. because of the long lines that are expected, election officials are asking voters to do some research. a flurry of activity at the county board of elections as voters turn in their absentee ballots looking to avoid the crowds tomorrow.

when marylanders held to the polls on tuesday, they will not only cast their votes in the presidential race, they will also have their say on a number of ballot questions. there's a lot of information and voters are asked to be familiar with those questions before they arrive. >> the sample ballots were mailed to each household in prince georges county and i encourage voters to take a look at those sample ballots. and maybe mark them up. so when they get to the polls, they're prepared to know how they're going to vote. >> reporter: question seven deals with gambling and has been the subject of many political ads. it would allow the building of a six the casino in prince georges county. also on the ballot, question six, the civil marriage protection act. which would allow gay and lesbian couples to get married in the state of maryland. question three was born out of the scandal involving prince georges cncil woman lesley johnson. johnson pleaded guilty to charges in connection to a corruption probe that netted her husband, former county executive

jack johnson. but a loophole in the law did not force her to step down after the guilty plea and she continued to collect a salary. a vote for a constitutional amendment on question three would change that. meaning a politician would be removed at the time of a guilty plea or in the case of a trial would be suspended upon conviction and then removed after sentencing. question four allows immigrants who are in this country illegally to qualify for in state tuition rates at maryland colleges. students must meet certain requirements including graduation from a state high school, proof that income taxes have been paid and show intent to apply for permanent residency. also on the ballot, question five, which chance the boundaries of maryland's eighth congressional district which is currently held by chris van holland and is mainly in montgomery county. and questions one and two which would require judges of the orphans court for prince georges county and baltimore county to be licensed to practice law in maryland and be members in good

new jersey experienced a minor earthquake around 1:00 this morning. the quake hit the northern part of the state which is still dealing with power outages. poay so far they've received no reports any damages or injuries from that earthquake. a week after sandy devastated the east coast, some things are starting to get back to normal.

later today, president obama will meet with fema to discuss the disaster relief effort. sandy has claimed 106 lives. utility companies are still working to restore power to more than 1 million people. gas lines are still long but new york governor andrew cuomo and new jersey governor christie have promised an end to the shortage this week. >> the gas shortage won't help the rush to get back to work and school this morning. it's the first day of class for students in new york city since sandy. this morning, new york city subway system is running at about 80% of its normal service. new jersey's transit agency tried to run emergency bus services but had to shut down because of overcrowding. the agency says it's several weeks away from full restoration. if you're heading north, amtrak service will be limited today between washington, new york and boston. that's because crews are still repairing the damage caused by sandy. amtrak is telling passengers to make reservations by phone or online to avoid soldout trains

and long lines at ticket counters. >> hurricane sandy is making it extremely difficult on the new york state board of elections. they're shipping generators out to polling locations that are still without power. the board is expecting a low turnout. less than 25% rejgistered voter. the news comes as new jersey's board of elections announced it will allow residents to e-mail their votes in if they cannot get to a polling station. right now, montgomery county council president roger better lander is discussing pepco's response to hurricane sandy. he's meeting with members of the media at the council office building in rockville. thousands lost electricity in the county as trees knocked over power lines following the storm. but pepco is receiving mostly high praise for their response. restoring power to everyone only a few days after that dynamic storm. jersey just can't catch a break. they had an earthquake today, huh. >> it was very minor thankfully.

the next thing for them is this coastal storm that could be threatening that area by thursday for them. for us, may be affecting us by wednesday. the only difference now is we're going to have one hour earlier sun rises and one hour earlier sne sun sets. this is 4:30 in the afternoon. the sun was about to set. it's going to take time getting used to. it sure is nice having that extra hour of sleep. >> loved it. >> i think we should turn the clocks back one hour every weekend. >> every weekend. >> might get a little thrown off after a while but i'm loving that extra hour of sleep. there's that gorgeous sky over washington. what a difference from just a couple hours ago. it was all cloudy. right now, reagan national, 46. very dry. dew point at 26. the wind coming out of the north at 10, 15 miles an hour. occasionally we'll have some gusts a little higher than that.

you can see all the cloudiness is now pretty much disappeared. just a few clouds lingering over the mountains. temperatures all around the regions now in the 40s. in the 30s, upper 20s in a few locations. where they still have snow on the ground from last week. >> as we go forward here, we're keeping an eye on what's going on out here in the midwest. this is a disturbance over the midlevels of the atmosphere. during the day on tuesday, forming another developing area of low pressure off of the carolina coast. and then depending on how it tracks, does look like the latest track is going to keep it right along our coast, close enough for us to get some wind and rain from it, and drawing in some cold air from the north as it goes by. changing the rain to snow around our region.

right now, the candidates are crossing the country on their last full day campaigning. president obama will be speaking in madison, wisconsin, a few minutes from now. madison, wisconsin. right now, you're looking at bruce springsteen live. he just took the stage. around 18,000 people in attendance to see the boss. springsteen also took the stage in a concert friday on nbc for victims sandy. and once again, the boss on stage, putting his support behind president obama in madison, wisconsin, where the president will be speaking minutes from now. president obama will also visit columbus, ohio, and des moines, iowa, today. the president will spend tonight in chicago where he'll await the results of the election. >> mitt romney will visit four battleground states today. he's in virginia right now and

will appear at george mason university this afternoon. the republican presidential nominee will also head to ohio, new hampshire and florida, all today. police are calling it a horrific accident. the pittsburgh zoo remains closed the day after a 2-year-old boy fell into a wild dog exhibit and was mauled to death. police say the boy's mother tried to give him a better view by putting him up on top of the railing of the viewing deck but the 2-year-old fell 11 feet into the pit. they say a pack of african painted dogs attacked him immediately. zookeepers say they did everything they could to save the little boy but it was too late. >> they responded immediately and were able to get several of the dogs into the backup building. the veterinarians arrived and tried to scare the dogs away from the young child with darts. and were unsuccessful in doing that. >> police did manage to get all but one the dogs away from the young boy. they had to shoot that one and

kill him. the zoo's president says it is still not clear if the boy actually died from the attack or whether it was from the fall. an army staff sergeant accused of killing 16 villages will appear in a military court today. staff sergeant robert bails is accused of walking off an afghan base in march in the middle of the night and killing mostly women and children in a drunken rampage. today is the beginning of a two-week preliminary hearing to determine if there's enough evidence for a court-martial. part of the hearing will be held at night so villagers and soldiers can testify live from afghanistan. if convicted, bails could face the death penalty. former mobster james whitey bulger remains in the hospital today after complaining of chest pains. the 83-year-old bulger was in prison when he told guards he was having problems. he's accused of playing a role

in 19 murders. he was on the run for close to 40 years until police caught him last year in california. accused of helping the former butler steel secret documents. the man was work as a computer technician for the vatican when he allegedly helped the butler steal the documents. last month, the butler received an 18-month prison sentence. the computer technician is facing charges of aiding and abetting the crimes. >> nasa says all systems are go for a rocket launch this week. the ten-foot tall rocket is set to launch between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. wednesday from the flight facility in virginia. if you live near that facility, you may be able to see it. if the launch is delayed because of weather, nasa will try again thursday. the international space station has had an astronaut on board every single day for the past 12 years. what an accomplishment. to celebrate, nasa has launched a new app to help you keep tabbs on it. it's called spot the station.

mohammed sharif yasdani. he suffers from dementia. he was last seen near his home. he is about 5'6" tall and was wearing a gray sweat suit when he disappeared. if you know anything about his whereabouts, call police immediately. when a baby is crying, most parents will do just about anything, and i mean anything, to calm that baby down. but how clean is a pacifier really? new research from oklahoma state university finds that used pacifiers, even those that look clean have loads of bacteria. scientists took a closer look at pacifie pacifiers. they found all kinds bacteria including mold and staph. >> a potential reservoir for germs that will make you sick. may look solid in your hand but when you look at it under the scanning electron microscope, it looks like a sponge. >> now, this was a relatively

tossup between president obama and republican candidate mitt romney, the crowd here at george mason university is here to see mitt. >> very excited. i think he's just what we need for our country at this point in history. >> oh, i've come to see my guy mitt romney. i'm just thrilled and excited. >> reporter: the commonwealth's 13 electoral votes will prove to be a crucial part of this election. as will florida, new hampshire, wisconsin, as well as colorado. both romneys will make a hard last-minute push through many of these states. governor romney is set to speak in virginia around 2:45. lots were here early braving the cold temps. >> i was probably one of my first people to get my ticket because i was very excited. >> reporter: romney's first visit to gmu after obama made two stops here already. a prime location for the candidate to hold a large rally and it targets the youngest voter. >> they're going off what other people are saying rather than educating themselves on the facts and going in on partisan websites and dine of like seeing

meanwhile continues in the new york/new jersey area. over the weekend some key distrip wugs terminals where tanker trucks fill up came back online along with the buckeye and colonial pipelines which are big feeders. no time line on when the massive phillips 66 refinery in lyndon, new jersey, nicknamed the gasoline machine, still no word on when it will be powered up. we expect to hear more later today. gasoline prices continue to fall nationally. at the pump, aaa says the average price for gasoline is now 3.47 a gal be on average. that's down 35 cents from a month ago. the average price in new york is still about 3.96. folks aren't gounling ging if te open. in the district, $3.67 a gallon. huge difference from a month ago. >> yeah, very true, but still too high. i wish they'd go down a little more. >> it will, little by little here. >> thanks, have a great day. >> you too.

one of the greatest ways that yoga poses release stress is by twisting the spine, by lengthening the spine, by releasing the back. so kelly's going to sit down in chair pose. this is -- you could even -- she can come to the front of the chair. i mean this is -- i thought a lot about what pose to bring here today because this is something anybody can do. at their desk. like before dinner. after putting the kids to bed. anything. she's going to twist to the right first. her left hand goes to her right knee. her right hand goes to the back of her chair. the most important thing that's happening is she's not just sort of randomly sitting. she's sitting and feeling grounding through her pelvis and through her legs into the floor and lifting the spine. she's rooting her body to rise and twist. she'll go to the other side. >> she needs to make the tangible -- whoever does this pose needs to make the tangible decision sit up tall. >> it's such an interesting point. because you sit up tall by releasing down. we usually when we hold stress we hold ourselves up.

americans may be preparing to head to the polls tomorrow. people around the world are keeping a close eye on this election. nbc's michelle kozinski has more on the global fascination with our political races.

approaching the noon hour. we have lots of sunshine though and a blustery wind coming out of the north and northwest. gusting to around 15, 20 miles an hour. even with that sun, it still feels quite chilly. temperatures right now, reagan national is at 49. it's only going to get up to around 51 or so for the high today. the rest of the region, still in the mid-40s much of the area after we started out with near freezing temperatures this four forecast will have delightful afternoon if you enjoy brisk autumn weather. highs only around 50. average high this time of year 62. a cold start tomorrow morning. you'll need a coat to vote tomorrow morning early. it will be down around the low 30s much of the region starting off early tomorrow morning. then into the 40s tomorrow afternoon with increasing clouds. but great weather for election day tomorrow. should be dry. then on wednesday, this storm we've been talking about for the last week still looking now more likely that we will get some rain changing to snow, maybe some accumulating snow on
