i have learned from you. and you've made me a better president. >> four more years. president obama wins re-election and said the best is yet to come for america. even as the votes in one battleground state are still unsettled. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. we have live team coverage of this historic election in just a moment. but first we begin with the weather today, folks. right now we're tracking a strong coastal storm. >> it's making its way across the mid-atlantic at this hour and it could mean snow for some of us. let's go over to veronica johnson. >> yes, still a strong coastal storm. as i said yesterday, the storm system more off the coast and still trying to overcome a lot of dry air. so this is how our day has looked pretty much with really precipitation falling throughout. just got off the phone with a friend of mine up in essex, maryland, areas northeast baltimore, where there's been a

few drops of rain falling there. let's take me up to philadelphia, pennsylvania, where they've had flakes of snow. in fact, bigger flakes. you can see covering the camera lens. you can see the traffic down below. philadelphia, pennsylvania, from this coastal storm, one of the areas that's expecting some of the higherccumulating snowfalls. trenton, new jersey, and up around hartford, connecticut. back to what's going on here. you can see the trend, the moisture pushing throughout the morning hours. the afternoon hours from east to west, now leesburg, d.c., waldorf, leonardtown. very few reports of much of anything falling here. in new jersey, look at that white, different story here where they've had low visibility, down to a quarter mile. the bigger flakes here. that's closer to the center of the storm system. and even our wind gusts inland have been up around 20 miles per hour. i'm not expecting much at all from this storm system. maybe an inch of accumulating

snowfall. i-95, hartford, cecil county, we could see a dusting around baltimore, areas of northern howard county. generally light rain here with our best opportunity coming between 8:00 p.m. and about 11:00 p.m. very short window, where we could see anything squeezed out of the atmosphere. we'll talk more about the winter weather advisories and the next big thing coming our way in weather in a couple of minutes. president obama on his way back to whington right now. he won re-election last night with a tremendous turnout. and a near clean sweep this the battleground states. on this day after, nbc news is still waiting to make an official call for florida. but the president hit 270 electoral votes without it. nbc steve handelsman is live in chicago with how the president got there. steve? >> reporter: jim, thanks. good evening. so president obama gets four more years.

but what else does it mean. how about all the problems up on capitol hill. well, from here in chicago today, president obama telephoned congressional leaders, urging more bipartisan cooperation. hoping yesterday's vote was the kind of jolt needed to get things done. reelected, with more than 300 electoral votes and the majority of the popular vote. president obama headed back to the white house, hoping his victory can break washington's gridlock. putting aside florida, where the votes were still being counted, the president dominated the election map. victory across the battleground states except north carolina. obama backers celebrated his win in swing state virginia. harry reid whose senate majority got bigger, demanded republicans cut deals now on taxes and spending. >> american people want us to work together. republicans want us to work

together, democrats want us to work together. >> reporter: conceding his loss, mitt romney called for compromise. >> at a time like this, we can't risk partisan bickering and political posturing. our leaders have to reach across the aisle to do the people's work. >> reporter: how did the people of america reject romney. one reason is our population has changed. a smaller share of whites voted, down to 72% of the total. more minorities voting, more young people. changes that favor democrats, like barack obama. he reached out last night to romney backers. >> and whether i earned your vote or not, i have listened to you. i have learned from you. >> reporter: some republicans say they've learned. >> if we don't change modern conservativism, we're going to go extinct. >> reporter: in a nation that just gave barack obama four more years. bipartisanship is going to get an immediate test, the dreaded

fiscal cliff. automatic cross-the-board tax hikes, and deep spending cuts are just seven weeks away. live from chicago, i've steve handelsman, news4. a rough post-election day sell-off on wall street today. the dow was down more than 300 points. it fell below 13,000 for the first time since september. the sell-off was triggered by worries over the looming fis kl cliff here at home. there are new worries about europe's struggling economy. financial experts say the obama administration needs to resolve the fiscal cliff situation, or the u.s. could see another credit downgrade next year. democratic virginia senator-elect tim kaine said he's ready to hit the ground running when he officially takes office early next year. he said he's ready to be part of the solution to get our nation's economy back in order. kaine said the big issues he'll be focusing on are jobs and

infrastructure. as far as last night's election, he said the fact that virginia once again went for president obama, proved the commonwealth is a key battleground. >> any party looking at this american political landscape looks at virginia as a key state, like we were viewed back in the 1770s. i mean, we're viewed as one of the key states in this country politically, economically, brain powerwise, and we're doing it again. >> coming up on news4 at 5:00, julie carey will tell us why tim kaine said one of his first tasks will be finding a newly elected republican to partner with. reactions pouring in, now that table games like blackjack and roulette are coming to casinos in maryland. voters approved question 7 last night paving the way for gambling expansion and a new casino in prince george's county. nearly $90 million was spent by both sides on the measure.

it was approved 52-48% statewide even wider margins in prince george's county. >> national harbor being young and new and having been built in somewhat of a recession. it's kind of exciting to see what it could bring. >> morally, i'm not happy with it. because gambling to me, i think, is going to bring more crime into the area. >> on news4 at 5:00 tonight, tracee wilkins finds out what prince george's county leaders have to say about the new casino coming to their region. some couples are already looking to the future now. starting next year, same-sex marriage will be legal in the state. voters in maryland and maine became the first to approve gay marriage instead of having a court decide the matter. news4's megan mcgrath is telling what this means for one local family. >> reporter: for bonny and roamy, the passage of question 6, maryland's civil marriage

protection act, is a victory for their relationship of seven years. >> i burst out crying. of course, just absolutely thrilled, delighted. >> i'm proud to be a marylander. >> reporter: reverend burger and paladino have helped hundreds of other same-sex couples commit to their partners. both are ministers who have performed same-sex marriages in d.c. now they look forward to their own wedding in maryland. >> my beloved actually to get on her knee, and propose, so that's in the future. >> reporter: like many around the state, they watched the election results with keen interest. as passage became clear, reverend burger began getting calls and e-mails from couples she had married in the district who wanted to take their vows again in their home state. >> as we followed it on facebook, people were saying, reverend bonny, we got married

in d.c., but now can we get married in maryland. >> reporter: she's proud that the answer to that question is now yes in maryland. >> it opens my heart. it just says, hurray. hurray for people who went beyond their own comfort zone to realize that when somebody is not free, none of us are free. >> reporter: reverend burger said she performed the first same-sex marriage on the steps of the courthouse when it became legal. and she's going to do it again in maryland on january 1st. megan mcgrath, news4. undocumented students in maryland are also celebrating a big win today. question 4 commonly known as the dream act passed last night. it allows undocumented students to pay in-state tuition to public colleges. if they attend a maryland high school for three years and they

live pictures from philadelphia. traffic backed up there already, and the snow is just starting to fall there. we'll have the latest on our forecast on this storm in just a bit. a little more than a week after superstorm sandy, some areas along the northeast coast are already getting, as we saw, hit again. >> this coastal storm is threatening to dump several inches of snow in some areas. it could also cause more coastal flooding in areas already hard hit. nbc's jay gray is live tonight in trenton, new jersey, with more on how people are bracing for this next dose of winter weather from mother nature.

jay? >> reporter: hey there, pat, jim. what a mess. we're seeing a little bit of rain, a lot of snow. right now these conditions only going to intensify over the next day or so. the wind, it's picking up, and it's all happening at the absolute worst time, as you talk about, just over a week after sandy. the damage and difficulties still stretch for miles. >> we just got hit. everybody got hit with sandy. >> reporter: now millions along the east coast must deal with a second storm. >> it's expected to arrive with heavy winds and rains further into the day today, and tonight and into tomorrow morning. >> reporter: a harsh nor'easter is already starting to dump heavy snow in central connecticut. front loaders and piles have been moved into place. piles of salt and sand are at the ready. but there's a difficulty in trying to protect an area already ravaged by sandy. hundreds of thousands are still without power. tarps cover roofs where they can. in other places, homes and

communities have been wiped away. and this latest round of rough weather will likely set back the recovery here. >> i can see it's actually moving backwards, people losing power, losing power again. >> reporter: an overwhelming task, that the cleanup will become more difficult here. >> it will make a slow go of it. snow and ice gets mixed with this sticks that are out there, it's hard to chip it. >> reporter: the winter storm is already chipping away at travel. flights have been delayed and canceled. a situation that, like the conditions, is only expected to get worse. yeah, along with the conditions, as we talk about, getting worse for the next day or so, and then it's going to be at least this weekend before recovery efforts can really get back in earnest here and up and done the east coast. live in trenton, new jersey, jay gray, jim, pat, back to you now.

>> big flakes there, jay. thanks so much. heavy stuff. >> how much of that will we get and where in this area? >> sure. areas to the north and east, where the winter weather advisories are, harbor county, cecil county, baltimore county, those are the areas that see the best chance of accumulating snowfall. for us, what i think we'll see a few flakes that try to mix in as we get into the latter part of the evening, early part of the night. i'm not anticipating any accumulating on the roadways. this is trenton, new jersey, one of the areas we could see around four, five inches of snowfall by the time this system starts pulling away. other areas with those big wet flakes will be northward as this coastal storm heads on by midday tomorrow. around hartford, connecticut, they could have a half a foot of snow. for us, i want you to know, the temperatures during the overnight period will be dropping down to freezing. with any moisture on any

roadways, i'm not expecting any major problems tomorrow. but know there could be isolated slick spots. want to make you aware of that. we're at 45 degrees right now. reagan international airport with a north wind at 15 miles per hour. gusts to 30 miles per hour later on as the temperatures drop. dew point temperature at 29 degrees. this is a big element of our storm. all that dry air that this moisture has had to overcome. here's a look at the advisories. all the way up to boston and maine. i think the areas around hartford, connecticut, and new jersey, where they've seen the bigger snowflakes already, the low visibility is the locations that could pick up that snowfall. again, making its way more and more into our area. slow-moving storm, but still for us, because it's taken so long, the saturated air is going to be in and out. philadelphia getting some mixed conditions. look around coastal new jersey. snow there showing up for us,

again. we're going to see light showers. the little spritz of rain that we're getting, scattered right now. that will start to pick up more and more. by 7:00 p.m., light rain, maybe a few flakes that will start mixing in. same thing for 8:00, 9:00. and i think by the time we get to 11:00 p.m., midnight, our precipitation will be ending. temperatures above freezing. but with any wet roads tomorrow morning, may be looking at some slick spots. 43 leesburg. 39 winchester. plenty cold out there, again, with the wind, it's giving us lou windchill readings where it feels like it's in the 30s right now. winds for tomorrow morning as the storm system pulls away. we'll have the windchills in the 20s by tomorrow morning. breezy day with sunshine coming to us. sunshine for the end of the week on friday. let's go ahead and take a look at the forecast. start with this evening, what we're expecting. an inch around aberdeen, baltimore, west minister, maybe

a dusting. we get the light rain around here. we're cold, 34 to 38. windy, too, tomorrow morning 29 to 35. dry with no precip falling. but again, it could be slick spots on area roads. and then a major warm-up. look at sunday. i'll have more on that in a couple of minutes. jim, pat? >> thanks, veronica. a ballot full of questions, and maryland voters have answers. whur georgette green joins us next. food for thought. should genetically modified food contain a special label? issues that voters faced in this election coming up.

two of the most debated issues from the maryland ballot are the talk around town today, after massive commercial efforts on both sides, you've seen the ads, expanded gambling and same-sex marriage laws will move ahead in the state of maryland. molette green is here now with reaction to question 6 and 7. first up, did you get any sleep last night? >> not a whole lot. >> 5:00 a.m. to midnight you were. >> yeah. i stopped counting after midnight. >> exactly. a lot of hours. first up, question 6, maryland and maine the first station in the nation to pass same-sex marriage by voter referendum. what's the reaction from your

listeners? >> our listeners said they felt very conflicted walking into the voting booths yesterday. because on one shoulder they had the messages from black church leaders who came out in full force and weighed in heavily on this and said, this is about the moral compass of our community. and our future. then they had the message that they heard from civil rights groups and others who said this is about fairness and equity. there were black church leaders who supported question 6, and they said they have been working on african-american christians for a number of years, trying to change attitudes and soften their stance on this issue. and they even told their parishioners, look, you can believe in your core, that marriage is between a man and a woman, but let's talk about fairness and equity. and about the future of our society moving forward, being more progressive. the younger generation also was key here in this vote, because -- and the governor said this to me yesterday as well when i spoke to him.

he said, people are seeing things differently. these are changing times. we've got to get with the pace of where society is. and the younger folks could make a big difference. and they believed they did, too. >> okay. big difference in prince george's county as we turn to question 7 and gambling. what are your listeners saying to the expansion of national harbor? >> 59% in prince george's county came out in favor of question 7 to expand gaming. the listeners that really talked a lot about this said, look, it came down to money, and jobs. money for education, and bringing jobs to the county. and that's what they thought about when they made a decision on question 7. >> how much of an impact and influence did former county executive wayne curry and current county executive baker have in getting this measure passed? we saw the commercials with them in the 11th hour. >> a lot of energy and money went into this.

curry, his message to listeners, our listeners was brilliant. they said, look, the three words wayne curry used in his ads, don't get played. that's what resonated with people. in other words, if you don't pass this, then what do you have? what's the alternative to bringing jobs, and to getting money pumped into prince george's county schools? the additional money they promised would come from gaming. wayne curry is a prince georgian through and through. he still carries a lot of political clout. but people in the community see him as one of them. then on the alternative side, people said to us, our listeners called in and said, look, what is the opposition offering? they're saying the bill as it is written is flawed, okay, but how are we going to get the money, how are we going to get the jobs, where is the information, what are you offering me? and then they were very suspect of all that money coming in from that gaming interest in west virginia, saying vote no.

the current county executive, baker, who laid his political clout on the line, i mean, this was it for him, and he admitted, this was a huge issue. he was more nervous about this question than about getting elected. and he tried a number of times before he was elected county executive. he said, look, you can hold your nose at question 7, and not like gaming. but look at what else we're offering you. we're offering you what you've been asking for in prince george's for decades. high in shopping and high in restaurants. people in the county have money to spend, and they take it out of the county. and he's saying, look, i can give you all of what you want. you don't have to go to the casinos, just vote for question 7. and they did. >> and then there's jobs, too, the third thing that everybody was voting for. >> absolutely. >> well, two very divisive, controversial issues. but the voters' voices have been heard. >> the voters -- we'll talk about on whur.

welcome back, everybody, at 4:30. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. the first family on their way back to the white house right now, air force one will deliver them to the white house after president obama's reelection last night. they will return to the white house in about two hours. a rough post-election day sell-off on wall street today. the dow down more than 300 points. it fell below the 13,000 level for the first time since september. the nasdaq and s&p are also suffering from big losses this evening. the sell-off was triggered by worries over the looming fiscal cliff here at home. there are also new concerns about europe's struggling economy. tim kaine said it's time for folks on both sides of the aisle to fix the economy.

when he takes office, he said he'll be ready to take up america's fiscal issues including the issue of jobs. he said congress needs to act before the end of the year to avoid deep sequestration cuts. the new casino in prince george's county won't open until 2016. officials still have to choose a contractor for the development. last night, voters approved question 7, which will also bring table games to maryland's casinos. it was a $90 million advertising blitz, making it one of the most expensive questions in the state's history. now, let's get the latest on the question about the weather, and exactly what this latest coastal storm system is going to mean for the washington area. veronica? >> yeah, the coastal storm, well, it's off the coast, but it's been slow to do anything here. you look at the rather da, and you would think it's been raining already throughout the day today. you can see the clock at the top starting out at around 2:00. that was the last couple of hours with that moisture pushing inland. you can see where the snow is,

all that area in white. new jersey, up toward connecticut, massachusetts, new hampshire, vermont. but around here, all we've gotten is very scattered light rain. up north, they've gotten three to four inches of snow around areas of central connecticut. 50, 60-mile-per-hour winds, too. that's where the worst conditions will be to our north. around here, our best chance of getting any snow at all, even just a few flakes will be from 8:00 p.m. until about 11:00 p.m. we could see areas east and north of d.c., around a dusting of snow. it's possible that areas that favor that mostly will be up around hartford county, cecil county, northern baltimore county, up toward maryland. for tomorrow morning, i'm not expecting any widespread trouble on area roads, but there might be some isolated slick spots. so use caution early tomorrow morning. we'll talk about this trend, this warming trend coming up with another look at our seven-day forecast. every election cycle includes ballot measures that

some people might consider unorthodox. news4's keith russell joins us live now with results from some of the more unexpected initiatives this year. keith? >> pat, around the country, there were ballot issues affecting marijuana, adult films, even the food you eat. colorado and the state of washington are now the first to approve recreational marijuana use. colorado's governor last night issued a statement warning people not to break out the cheetos and goldfish just yet. the new laws allow anyone over 21 to have a small amount for any purpose. but keep in mind marijuana possession is still a federal offense. now let's switch to los angeles. known as the capital of the movie industry, but voters in l.a. county want certain movies to be safer. a measure has been passed requiring adult film actors to wear condoms. it will include random inspections on movie sets from the board of health. the measure is meant to help prevent the spread of hiv and aids. critics argue adult film actors

already get tested once a month. california, a hot state. voters rejected another effort that would require a label for genetically modified foods. keep in mind, up to 80% of the processed foods we buy in the u.s. comes with genetically engineered ingredients. if california had passed that last measure, it would have been the first in the country. pat and jim, those measures -- those ballot issues, one word, interesting. very interesting. news of president obama's reelection has become a global talking point today. there were many large watch parties through the night. and world leaders were quick to congratulate mr. obama on his victory. as we take a live look at the white house now, nbc's michelle kosinski has more on the global reaction to the news that mr. obama will call the white house home for four more years. >> reporter: people partied through the night watching the

results come in live. london, 4:30 in the morning, crowds of brits, not americans, british citizens were in there cheering on the results. today we're also seeing reaction come in from world leaders. israel offered congratulations. >> i want to congratulate president obama on his reelection. i think the united states of america again demonstrated why it's the greatest democracy on earth. the security relationship between the united states and israel is rock solid. >> reporter: we're even hearing from the taliban and pakistan saying, you know what, obama and romney are pretty much the same enemy, that they will continue to fight. for president obama, who just won his next term, he gets his first order of overseas business, at least courtesy of british prime minister david cameron. he was interviewed today on the border of jordan and syria. during this interview, he said, we must do more now. >> one of the first things i want to talk to barack about is

how we must do more to try and solve this crisis. >> reporter: he wants these two nations together to put more pressure on the assad regime and do more to aid the rebels. back to you. president obama's reelection wasn't front-page news in every newspaper today. here are a couple from outside the museum. the front page story in the state newspaper in south carolina, it was about gas prices this morning. not about the election. and the charleston gazette still had the race too close to call. hmm. the first lady is known for making fashion statements, and now we have details about the dress she wore during president obama's victory speech early this morning. it was a magenta number made by michael coors. mrs. obama's wardrobe has been known to make fashionistas swoon. she's been known to wear both high and low-end designers. >> all of them looked stunning last night.

who would have thought that big bird, bayonets and binders is what stood out in the race. >> angie goff was tracking all the posts and tweets on election night. busy night for you. >> you, too. you were out on u street. the numbers show, 20 million tweets election day became the most tweeted about event in u.s. political history. it's clear social media is part of this election process, and it's changed. >> president barack obama has become the fourth democrat in the last 100 years to be elected to the second term. >> reporter: within minutes of barack obama being declared the winner on tv, online, the phrase obama wins dominated social networks. his tweet of four more years with this picture became the

most retweeted picture in twitters history. all day sites were flooded with images sharing their voting experiences, along with lots of photos of their ballot, which is illegal in some states. one guy's video of a man that wouldn't let him vote for obama has more than 4 million views. and in washington, #stay in line and i voted was a top trend. big bird found a way in. and beyonce posted her picture, while the donald called the election a total sham and urging a revolution in this country. i don't know if you saw, brian williams actually said that trump's tweets were close to irresponsible. trump obviously had something to say to him. trump later deleted some of his posts. you're going to get a little bit of everything online.

jim and pat? >> all right. angie, thanks so much. quite an interesting night. and we're watching this afternoon and this evening, what's the rush hour going to look like? >> it's a big storm with a little bite. and that bite will come during the overnight, early morning hours, where we could see some isolated slick spots. but for the evening rush, folks hitting the road next couple of hours, just scattered few drops of rain here and there. it's not until i think we get to about 8:00 or so. maybe around 7:00, there might be a few little flakes that try to start mixing in. areas around northeastern montgomery county, howard county, say northern prince george's county, too. that's a look at the radar you're seeing there. storm team 4, throughout the day we've seen the moisture pushing in. but the air's so dry, not seeing much fall at all. different story of north. around new jersey, atlantic city, white and bright white, too. that's the heavy snow that is

been falling in interior sections there. we're at 45 degrees right now. again, dry air, windy, though. the winds are out of the north at 15 miles per hour. it will be picking up throughout the day today and have winds throughout the day tomorrow. we're at 42 degrees right now in montgomery county, rockville, areas around college park at 44. 44 fort belvoir. and huntingtown 43 degrees. tomorrow morning, below freezing. so any moisture on area roads, it doesn't take much to get slick conditions. the road temperatures are fine for now. but there might be a few areas way up here around gaithersburg, perhaps around howard county, columbia, where there's maybe a few slick spots in those sheltered roads, tree-shaded roads. a possibility. just take caution tomorrow morning. we'll be starting out at 35, 36. other areas, upper 20s. precip should be ending about midnight and dry conditions expected tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon.

christmas decorations going up today in naples, italy. and this year there are new additions to their nativity scenes. shop keepers selling a miniature president obama holding a sign that reads, god bless america. craftsmen have been carving the nativity scenes in naples since the 19th century. it includes figurines of famous people over the year. in kenya, two newborns named in honor of last night's election. a 20-year-old mother decided to name her twins barack obama and mitt romney. a nurse at the hospital said it's not unusual for babies to be named after famous people. in 2008, she said some mothers

after getting so close to the white house, the next question for mitt romney is, what's next. nbc's jamie takes a look at what romney's future could hold. >> reporter: in the final days of campaigning, mitt romney seemed to believe victory was within his grasp. >> when i am president -- >> reporter: he talked about a different mood, and confidence. >> exciting. you know that? >> reporter: as the results tipped toward president obama, romney had to face the reality that he had lost his second presidential campaign. >> i think he understands here, too, whenever you enter a race like this, there's a chance you're going to lose. he'll deal with it. >> reporter: no question, though, the defeat is going to be painful.

with inevitable second-guessing. was it because of his inability to connect with everyday voters? his gaffes? >> 10,000 bucks? >> i like being able to fire people. ann drives a couple of cadillacs. >> reporter: or because of this hidden video. >> 47% of americans pay no income taxes. >> mitt romney will regret that statement. that's one of the things he could have avoided. >> reporter: at 65, romney could run again. but in the past, he's dismissed that, as unlikely. and his wife, ann, recently ruled it out. >> is that the end of politics for you and your husband? >> he will not run again. >> reporter: even if they were interested, presidential historians believe the gop will move on and quickly. >> mitt romney will now, unfortunately for him, be cited by republicans as our problem in

2012. some republicans will say he wasn't conservative enough, that's why he lost. other republicans will say, he was too moderate. that's the conflict we're now going to see for the next four years. >> reporter: more speculation is that romney will return to private life, spend time with his family, perhaps go back into business. >> romney has advantages as a loser that other men don't have. he's already independently wealthy. he doesn't have to go out and find a job. >> reporter: that said, whatever romney ends up doing, most politicians admit it takes more than a little while to recover from defeat. a hurricane, now a snowstorm. when are we going to get out of this huge nor'easter. we know in our hearts, for the united states of america, the best is yet to come. >> president obama's next four years will be in the white house, and the president is already trying to mend fences between the parties.
