claimed it was self-defense and the jury agreed. >> reporter: this tragic case was first reported as one roommate stabbing another because the music from her ipod was too loud. but after three days of testimony, we learned that this situation was much deeper than that. these were two young girls who did not like each other, and it all came to a head last home chomg weekend. and the jury decided that the way it ended was not murder. alexis simpson refused comment after being cleared of seven charges including first-degree murder in the death of her roommate dominique frasier. the juries were escorted out of the courthouse by sheff's deputies and also refused comment. of but simpson's attorneys did speak on her behalf. >> this is a self-defense case. alexis, in my mind, no doubt acted in self-defense. >> reporter: dominique's

frasier's throat was split by simpson in the dorm they shared during homecoming of last year. the state painted simpson as the aggressor. the defense said she acted in self-defense. they say the strongest part of their case was simpson taking the stand in her own defense. >> her emotion was very genuine, and she is tremendously remorseful for this incident. it has affected her emotionally and in ways that you can only imagine. >> is there anything that you would change about the way the case was presented? >> no. we did the very best we knew how to do. we presented the evidence as it was. and the jury gave us their verdict. >> you can see simpson's family hugging and thanking the attorneys from outside of the courthouse. but for the frasier family, there is no celebration. >> dominique frasier's mother lost her own daughter. only a couple of days before her daughter's birthday. and so certainly she's grieving.

>> reporter: now, it took the jury just a few hours to come up with this decision. prince george's state attorney says there are no winners in this tragic case. reporting live in upper marlborough, tracy wilkins, news4. breaking news in the middle east with israel on the brink of war against palestinian militants. fighting is the heaviest it's been in four years. hamas has fired more than 200 rockets into israel, killing at least three people there. in the meantime, israel's air strikes to stop the rocket fire from gaza hit dozens of hamas-related targets, including a military chief. another hamas leader is promising revenge for that death. israel is planning to increase its operations on the ground. as that violence in the middle east escalates, is it also striking a chord with many p people in our area. >> tonight opposing groups gather in the white house with protests. shomari stone has more on the

10 critically. investigators say the crossing gate and lights on the train tracks were working. there's new video tonight to shows the moment that superstorm sandy hit the new york city subway. the port authority released this video of the subways flooding at the height of the storm. city officials say lights are back on now in nearly 400 housing complexes but dozens of people there still don't have heat or hot water. president obama visited new york's hardest hit areas today. he met with parents of two boys carried away by the floodwaters in staten island. now to a hard lesson in economics. budget cuts are forcing d.c. to shut down 20 public schools but parents are fighting back to try to keep the plan from moving forward. erika gonzalez has both sides of the debate. >> reporter: if you ask dc chancellor kai ya henderson the reason to shut down schools, it's a number game.

>> there's a boat load of more money coming in from somewhere. i have to use the resources i currently have differently. >> reporter: too few students in too many schools. enrollment has been on decline in the district with over 40 years with only a recent slight uptick. some parents and critics of the proposed consolidation say it targets students with predominantly minority cities. >> are you all right? are you okay? somebody call 911. okay? i'm going to help. this child is in ward 2 and 3 west of the park. i'm doing cpr. these children are in wards 7 and 8. they're going to sit there. >> reporter: could the district save money in all of this? as it pertains to personnel only, councilman david ka tain ya seems to think so. in excess of $71 million in savings. >> reporter: and the buildings, possibly rent them says the chancellor, until they can be used by dcps again.

as council member david ka tain ya put it, this is very tough medicine for a very sick patient. another hearing next monday and then the final decision will be made in january. >> the principal at culler high school remains behind bars on an assault charge. her name is thelma jarrett. she and two other school employees, police say, attacked a woman during a high school football game. the victim is not talking about it, but her husband says she's devastated. >> my wife was attacked, you know, by three women, and i just want justice. it's outrage. >> reporter: jarrett is due in court tomorrow. she remains on administrative leave from coolidge high school as this investigation continues. police just released a picture of a man who assaulted a student in a public library. the 17-year-old victim says the man was stalking her inside the jefferson library in falls church last week. she fried to get away by running

into the bathroom but claims he followed her abd assaulted her there. concern over several armed robberies prompted some officers to meet with community members tonight. people live in an apartment complex across from the morgan boulevard station are concerned about their safety. there have been two armed robberies in that area in the past week. one woman tells news4 her boyfriend was robbed a month ago. >> he was outside smoking a cigarette and two teenagers came up to him and asked him for his phone. he said no. he they said, we're going to take it from you. he ended up running and going through another door and eshting the home. >> reporter: metro says the crimes all happened off their property. up next, millions of tax dollars spent on an empty field. now years later it remains untouched. tonight the i-team investigates. celebrity chef roasted by the "new york times." some people wonder whether the review crossed the line. how about our weather, doug?

comes to field space. which is why a battle is brewing off field over one of the last undeveloped patches of land in mcclain. in 2005, fair fox county bought an easement for this property. the price tag? $16 million. the most expensive land purchase in county historhistory. >> stated by the county executive this deal would not happen unless there were athletic fields in the arrange. >> reporter: a copy of the deed details 10 of the 41 acres in the easement could be used for recreation purposes, including two natural turf rectangular fields, a playground, picnic area with shelter and public trails. but seven years later, the land remains untouched and the county says the owner has now changed his mind. >> we didn't do the deal to sell it for athletic feel fields. we did it for a conservation ease. i think we've gotten the easement. >> reporter: dan duval says he

could have made millions more by offering it to developments. instead, he offered it to the county as an easement. >> we really wanted to preserve this resource for current and future generations. it is it a unique property. >> we have been asking the county for space to build fields for deck i'ds. >> reporter: joel stillman was mcclain youth athletic says there's a desperate need for fields at sa loan na. >> it encompasses less than 10% of the property, over 90% is left for educational and historical purposes. >> reporter: so on one side you have stillman, who's gathered 2500 signatures from residents supporting his plan. the opposing plan nearby neighbors who tell iteam dan duvall is rallying opposition to the fields, something he denies. >> we didn't go around in back doors and try and defeat anything. >> reporter: with so much disagreement, county supervisor john foust created a task force

to find out what the community really wants. >> we're not going to rush into doing something that we regret. >> reporter: that task force, including duval and stillman, will make a recommendation to the park authority next year, which has final say over what happens. but any development could be years away. >> perhaps if it we're not going to put fields there, the price ought to be renoeshted. >> reporter: a historic $16 million piece of land skill with an uncertain future. what do you think this place will look like in five years? >> i suspect it's going to look a lot like it does now. >> the park authority says historical and wetland surveys still need to be completed and they could limit the number of fields at sa loan na. duval says if the community ends up wanting the fields there in the end, he will accept it. he says so far his family has received about $6 million of the $16 million for the easement. it's cold out there tonight.
