leading news station, this is news 4 at 6:00. rg3 limping away from the beltway battle with the ravens. the redskins escaped with an overtime win, but they had to finish their comeback without robert griffin iii. good evening everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. fans got their money's worth in the battle of the beltways between the ravens and the redski redskins, but what everyone wants to know right now, how is rg3's right knee? dan hellie is live at fedexfield. a lot of farns holding their breath. at least he had a sense of humor about it tonight. >> it was really funny in his press conference, jim. it really was a tremendous overtime win. so much concern though here about the health of robert griffin iii. he said he's had an ac l before, doesn't feel like an acl.

confident he's going to be playing next week. we don't really know anything until he has an mri on that knee expected to take place tomorrow. so in his steed comes kirk cousins, another rookie quarterback who was perfect and then a couple other rookies step up and basically win the game for the redskins who improve to 7-6 on this year after four straight wins. ravens and redskins fans have been trash talking all week long. let's pick it up in the fourth quarter. ravens up by eight. rg3 taking it outside, finds some room. the big hit. griffin's he just gets hammered. he leaves the game, comes back in, but would have to exit for good. in comes backup quarterback kirk cousins. the redskins drive down the field and check out cousins here. hooked it up with pierre for the late touchdown. then he runs in the two-point conversion himself, and we're headed to overtime. after a defensive stop, a

64-yard richard crawford punt return, there is this. perfect still. a 34-yard field goal to win the game. the redskins win it 31-28. afterwards here is robert griffin iii, who is not fearing the worst. >> i'm not a doctor, but i know what acl feels like, and it doesn't feel like acl. so we won the game. you know, everybody is praying for me. you know, i feel pretty good right now about the whole situation, so, you know, i'm not too nervous bii will definitely be praying during the mri. >> robert grif yn iii feels pret good. he did have a serious limp going into his press conference. somebody had to pick up his car for him. so we're going to find out more about robert griffin iii coming up tomorrow. we will hear some player reaction on one of the biggest wins. >> do we have to look at that play again with the knee? that's tough to watch.

>> reporter: playoffs hopes and dreams live on at fedexfield. new details about a rescue operation in afghanistan. we're learning now that an american soldier was killed while rescuing a doctor who had been abducted in kabul. president obama has released a statement expressing sympathy for the soldier's family. police in lexington, kentucky, investigating an accident that killed a washington, d.c., woman. county officials identified the victim as 27-year-old lauren roady. they say she was hit by a fire truck last night at an intersection in downtown lexington. according to the nbc affiliate in lexington, mr. is have not clarified exactly how the accident happened. the county coroner described her death as accidentally. the mayor expressed a statement of sympathy. a gray, wet, and clowy day

features performances. this is the world's largest menorah. it caps the first full day of the jewish holiday that celebrates the victory of the mack beeian army and the triumph of light over darkness. in fiscal cliff negotiations, it's looking more like president obama could get his way on tax hikes for the wealthy. he met behind closed doors with house speaker john boehner at the white house this afternoon. no word yet on what came out of those talks, but an increasing number of congressional republicans are indicating they'll accept a tax -- >> we have spent all this time talking about revenue, but as we watched our government continue to spend more. this is really about spending. >> will i accept a tax increase as a part of a deal to actually solve our problems? yes. >> across the board tax hikes and spending cuts will automatically kick in if the white house and congress continueeach a deal now in 22 days.

dallas cowboys player remains behind bars tonight after a deadly crash that killed a teammate. defensive lineman josh brent is being held on half a million dollars bond. his lawyer called that excessive. police say brent was driving drunk when he crashed his car in the dallas suburb of irving yesterday. tem me teammate jerry brown died in the crash. a moment of silence was held for brown before today's game. coming up on news4 at 6:00, don't know exactly what you're looking for when you need a taxi in the district? >> you know, all these different cab, okay, holding onto the door. is this a real cab? >> a new policy could make it easier for you to hail a cab.

cancels a referendum coming up next saturday. the vote is on whether to adopt the draft constitution put together by morsi's islamists allies. morsi has not indicated any plans to cancel the referendum and plans to keep military forces in place through next week. tomorrow mayor vincent gray will offer his proposal to change the color of d.c. taxicabs. part of an effort to modernize the city's fleet. derrick ward spoke to customers about what color they think would be best for d.c. >> reporter: d.c.'s cab industry is nothing if not colorful. of course, there are the yellow cabs which look more orange and the ecofriendly green cab that's more white than green. and where is the red, white, and blue on the patriot cab? the d.c. taxicab commission is considering rather to make things less ironic by establishing a uniform color in the city. this driver thinks maybe they should opt for day glow green. >> you can see far away. the kids love it and they like

port of duluth. back here at home, there's the rain drops that are coming our way. there's a warm front just down to our south. it will ride up through here during the overnight tonight. so temperatures will climb after about 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. we should be in the low to mid-50s first thing tomorrow morning and then zoom into the 60s for a brief time tomorrow. then is chance for some steadiyer heavier showers late tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening as the front goes on by. behind it high pressure, a cooler and drier pattern, and the return of sunshine. that comes in as early as tuesday afternoon and lasts for much of the upcoming week. so overnight cloudy, chill y, light rain, drizzle, fog. tomorrow cloudy and mild, periods of rain from time to time, but breezy and much, much warmer tomorrow. well into the 60s. out ahead of the cold front which drops us back into high temperatures in the 40s for wednesday and thursday. back to around 50 by friday. so most of the upcoming week after tuesday noontime will be chilly and dry.

life-threatening injuries. this is after a double shooting near minnesota avenue and 19th street in southeast. we have a crew at the scene and we will have the latest coming up on nbcwashington.com and after the game later tonight. all right. let's turn to sports now and the redskins' comeback victory today. >> another first for the team, a win without robert at the end, right? >> yeah. >> the redskins -- >> still smiling at the end. >> he was smiling, limping off. the redskins hosting the ravens. these two go right at each other. it's a slugfest that knocks rg3 out late, but a number of other rookies come to the rescue. from the north pole it's santa at fedexfield taking in football today. redskins more nice than naughty to start the game. first drive, they have marched down the field on third and goal here. rg3 scrambling, looking, looking, and finding josh morgan for a four-yard touchdown. skins 186 yards in the first quarter. most in the nfl this season.

fast forward, ravens up 21-20 and going for more. seven-yard touchdown. he had 121 yards on the ground. baltimore up 28-20. ensuing redskins' possession, under two minutes to play, on second and 19, grif fin takes off. he's running into a couple guys and that's not good. hit hard at the end of the play. you can see on the replay his right leg just crushed. griffin would leave the game with a right knee injury. enter the other rookie, kirk cousins. now, rg3 did come back in, hurt too much, so here we go with cousins, and he comes through. hits for the 11-yard score. skins need a two-point conversion to tie. game on the line, and it's a quarterback draw. cousins runs it in himself. ties it at 28, and we are going to overtime. kirk and rg3, they hug it out on the sidelines. ravens, they win the toss. they go three and out. on the punt richard crawford,

conversion. he was cool as a cucumber and here is cousins after the game. >> i'm going to try to make something happen, try to do my best rg3, if you will, and pierre ended up coming off his route and breaking away and breaking open, and he was wide open. all i had to do was put it in his arms. >> it seemed destined for something. when you have a common goal, you really vying for that next man up type philosophy. that's when you start thinking your team is destined to do something special and we've been on a roll. >> wouldn't it be ironic if it's the other rookie quarterback who helps you get in the playoffs. >> i had faith. he did those kind of things for years at michigan state. he's waiting his time and i know he can help a lot of teams out there. he's playing against a special -- playing behind a special talent in robert, but i think if he's called upon, he will get it done and he did that today. >> i knew as soon as i got hit, as i screamed, like a man, of
