vote for friday and a second vote on january 15th. and the speaker has just responded to that criticism through a spokesman this evening. nbc news correspondent mike viqueira is nbc's washington bureau right now. mike, how much support does the speaker have right now to stay in that position? >> you know, jim, that's a great question. there's been a lot of speculation over the last couple days. after all that turmoil yesterday, where there was a back and forth, a question whether house republicans would go along with the overwhelming bipartisan vote, there were republicans very angry about that vote, they didn't think it had enough spending cuts in it to match enough tax hikes, and they hesitated. in the end, speaker john boehner had to put it on the floor that angered a lot of republicans. newscast his number two, eric cantor, the majority leader voted no, and john boehner voted yes on final passage. now, jim, tomorrow is the

formally election of the speaker. he's already been nominated. usually a formality. we have no reason to believe otherwise. but you've got to believe that somewhere down the line, he may be weak end here. that's why he's already looking forward to another fiscal clive. >> let's go back to the sandy spending bills. how did something like this happen? a lot of people are shaking their heads. did time just get away from it? >> that's part of t congress has a bad habit putting off the tough decisions until the last minute. they debated and voted on a p k package thought was vitally important. the problem was there were no offsets. it wasn't paid for. just emergency spending, and it would have added onto the debt. the senate passed it very late

all right. two days into resolutions, and a new study suggests being a little overweight, not a lot, may help you live longer. federal health scientists compared body mass index on nearly 3 million adults. bmi is a mesh ur789s of weight in relation to your height. the scientists found people with a little extra weight had a 6% lowers risk of premature death. it's important to note that people heavy enough to be classified as obead were found to have triple the risk of dies early. study results are published in

the latest issue of quarters the journal of the american medical association." it's the fourth day in the hospital for the secretary of state hillary clinton. she was being treated for a blood close. doctors say the close formed after she felt and suffered a concussion. more on how the diagnosis are treated and released. >> hillary clinton's blood clot is not a typical complication of a concussion. in fact this kind of colimpcation is very rare, but at the same time this kind of blood clot needs to be treated as soon as possible, because it can be very dangerous. left untreated it could cause a stroke. it's located behind her ear. it carries blood to the heart and lungs if if the close should get bigger, doctors fear it could cause blood to back up into the brain and the pressure could lead to a stroke. once the clod was discovered, clinton would have been treated with an iv drip to administer a

blood thinner to slowly discovered that close. doctors would pay close attention to a situation like this to monitor the patient carefully to make sure she's stable and not developing any new symptoms. of course, this raises a lot of questions for a lot of people. concussions are not all that unxlon. anyone who sufferings a concussion or strong blow to the head should see the doctor immediately. that's especially true if they're experiencing headache, weakness or numbness in the limits, vomiting or nausea, or particularly slurred speech. doctors say that hillary clinton is expected to make a full recovery from this, and there's no evidence of any neurological damage, so that's a good indication that the clot was caught in time. jim and pat, no indication at this point how long mrs. clinton will be in the hospital. all right. doreen, thank you. turning to the bert now, we are getting the big chill.

relatives of some of the victims of last year's shooting in the theater are -- in a her, families from nine of the 12 victims called the invite to the theater disgusting, also criticizing the company's timing. the invitations went out just two days after christmas. the aurora theater is slated to open later this month. meanwhile, the suspected gunman in the case will have a preliminary court hearing monday morning. a main route had to be shut down. authorities brought in a robot to remove the explosionive. they discovered it was a real grenade, but its internal component had been removed, so it was never a danger. things are back to normal in that area now. if you live or work in

downtown bethesda, brace yourself, the earth will soon be moves. since early december, construction crews have been setting over explosion to blast through layers of bedrock to help make wake for a mixed-use develop on bethesda row. the plast took a vacation over the holidays, but they're expected to resume this month. the project will include condos, apartments, retail space and lots of parking. until then, it has part of woodmont avenue closed and more than 300 parking spaces blocked off. there's trouble in the air over parts of leesburg. vulture, by some estimates up to 200, are roosting in a neighborhood around mayfair drive and plaza streets in the northeast parts of the town. the birds are important for the environment, but they cause trouble when they make their homes in residential areas. they tend to damage roofs by picking at them, and their waste causes health concerns, so every
