body found, the police confirm the body of a 23-year-old missing man was discovered in a ventilation shaft. what the investigators think happened to him after a new year's celebration. good morning and welcome to "news4 midday." i'm barbara harrison. >> and i'm keith russell. it's thursday, january 3rd, 2013. the police identified the body at 23-year-old michael powe. his body was found in an apartment building on built more street in nort the police are trying to figure out how he died. megan mcgrath is live with more of what happened. >> reporter: you can see the flyers on the windshields of

these cars. this was a part of the effort to locate michael powe who went missing after ringing the new year in with friends at an adams morgan bar. the took a tragic turn when investigators discovered powe's body at the bottom of a ventilation shaft at a apartment building here and they believe he fell to his death through an opening in the roof. a sad close to a missing person case. the police confirm the body of a man found in a ventilation shaft on built more street is that of 23-year-old michael powe. powe has been missing since new year's eve when he parted ways with his friends at shenanigans bar. friends say at around 2:45 a.m. new year's day poe powe called a friend and said he was celebrating on a rooftop which they thought he meant he wassen a rooftop bar. that was the last they heard from him. a 911 call from a resident brought investigators to this building late wednesday night located a block from the bar

where powe had been with friends. what he was doing on the roof and how he fell down the shaft is still under investigation. and you're looking at the roof of the haddington, the building where it happened. a resident described the shat as being three foot by two feet and says thrice a lightweight grate that goes across the top, something to keep out squirrels but nothing that would be able to sustain a lot of weight. exactly what michael powe was doing up on the roof on that new year's evening is still part of the investigation. reporting live in adams more dpan, megan mcgrath, news4. >> thanks, megan. a major traffic alert in chevy chase. a water main break could cause big delays on wisconsin avenue, blocks from the friendship heights metro station. tony is live with the situation. tony? >> reporter: barbara, good morning. crews putting the finishing touches on the water main break

you see behind me. they say it will be fixed in the next few minutes but that's just the beginning to get this road back opened. you can still see they have two southbound lanes closed on west avenue and traffic is getting by. this morning it was a very different story. it started last night around 6:00 p.m. a water main break along wisconsin avenue at dorset avenue. by 8:45 the cut off but they were waiting on repairs so they could dig which led to a horrendous morning commute and a massive backup. >> i was surprised they're doing this work during most of the condensed time of the day. >> reporter: once crews were able to dig through the unusual amount of concrete, they began to remove the old pipe but by 7:20, the backup stretched for miles at one point, many passengers ditching transportation and opted to walk. >> massive traffic is backing up pretty much past the bethesda

side of it so i got off the bus to walk. much quicker. >> reporter: not everyone was feeling the pain. some folks didn't have to travel that far. >> not too bad. just a quarter mile to go. >> reporter: with large amounts of water throwing down the street and freezing temperatures it wasn't long before ice formed and for these drivers, it add add stress woes to an already long morning. >> this ice patch i did a 180 and my car endnd up here. the initial salt came from this guy and he almost got killed after my accident. he was leaning behind his truck and his truck hit. >> by 9:15 if new pipe was on its way in but not in time for many commuters. >> very frustrated. i'm just trying to get to where i'm trying to get to. >> reporter: and barbara, once these crews finish, that truck with the gravel will dump it into this hole and they'll have the paving company come through and pavin the road. but that will not happen until later on this evening so the two lanes here on wisconsin avenue are set to be closed for quite some time.

that i the latest, barbara, we'll toss it back to you. >> what a mess with these freezing temperatures. hopefully, it will start to warm up and the ice will melt. thank you very much. and turning to our weather, very cold start to this morning. storm team4 meterologist tom kierein join us with the first forecast. >> hey, barbara welcome back. we're just now beginning to get above freezing. it has been a frigid morning. much of the region has been holding steady and low and mid 20s for the last several hours and teens farther north and west. quite a bit of high cloudiness drifting through and clouds are moving off to the east but they're just thin, high clouds getting sunshine trying to shine through the high clouds. right now looking at the temperatures, they're just now struggling to get above freezing throughout much of virginia. much of maryland is a little below freezing near 30 degrees. in prince george's county and montgomery county, howard county and points north and west, only in the 20s. still, out in washington county and western maryland and garret

and allegheny counties and much of the highlands of west virginia it was in the teens earlier and right now 20 degrees there and shenandoah valley near freezing. south, into the mid 30s and pred risk burg up to 36 and through central virginia and southern maryland, our viewers to the south may have highs reach near 40. elsewhere we'll stay in the 30s. how much longer will this cold pattn last? we'll look at that and the seven-day forecast in just a couple of minutes. >> we'll see you in here then. thank you. sand hook elementary school students and staff return to class this morning. this is their first time back since last month's deadly shooting spree. melissa mollet is here with more on the return to the new school with the same name. >> reporter: good morning. no doubt an emotional return for students, staff and parent this is morning. classes started a few hours ago at 9:00 this morning in a revamped middle school building. we have some video of buses headed there earlier. the building has been renamed sandy hook.

dozens of volunteers have been working for weeks transforming the nearby middle school into a new school for the students. they have been cleaning and refurbishing and even moving the students desks, backpacks and jackets from their old classrooms. the new classrooms here were made over to look just like the ones at their old elementary school. >> at one point there were 80 people in the building cleaning up the building, doing the kinds of things, painting, to make it really look cheerful and happy. we'll go to our regular schedule. and do the kinds of things we know are good for kids. >> teachers, students and parents were allowed to tour the building on wednesday. some of those parents are actual hi in class for today and they are being allowed to stay with their kids, probably with what the kids need. maryland governor will use the panhandle recommendation for the new gun package. they released the report yesterday giving police authority to take weapons from

mentally ill people that make specific threats. they could also be blocked from buying a gun. the panel said mental health professionals should be required to report tret threats to law enforcement. and relatives of people killed in last summer's colorado's theater shootings rejected an invitation to attend a memorial. the theater invited family members to an evening of remembrance at the aurora theater when it re-opens. relatives of 9 of 12 victims released a statement angrily rejecting the invitation and the mother called it, quote, a disgusting offer. >> they want the public relation's ploy of having us there to support their grand reopening when none of us are interested in ever stepping foot in that theater, that killing field, ever again. >> prosecutes in prosecutors will outline their case against james holmes at a preliminary hearing next week. virginia's attorney general is trying to block the release

a new at mid day, police charged five men in the gang rape and death of a 23-year-old medical student in india. the men were charged with rape and murder. they're accused of raping the woman for hours and beating her friend while on a bus in new delhi. the woman died in a hospital from massive internal injuries. the prosecutors will likely seek the beth penalty in the case. a sixth suspect is expected to be tried in juvenile quart. pakistanian intelligence

leader say two u.s. drone strikes killed at least 13 people including a senior militant commander. the overnight attacks happened into the tribal region near the pakistani/afghanistan border. the senior taliban commander was reportedly among the nine people killed in a missile strike on a house there. he was responsible for several attacks against us troops in afghanistan. however, he had a truce with the pakistani military. it is hard to independently verify his death. the u.s. rarely comments on its secretive drone program. the measure to prevent the devastating effects of going over the fiscal cliff is now law. president obama signed the bill in hawaii where he's back on his family vacation. the legislation raises taxes on the wealthiest americans and extends long-term unemployment benefits and delays billions of dollars this spending cuts for two months. now, the deal could save you hundreds of dollars if you use pretax income to pay for your commute. included in the legislation is a provision that allows you to put

few high clouds drifting over. over the next couple of days, high pressure moving in this cold, dry air mass that will be us for today, the tonight and tomorrow and saturday looks like we'll be starting off with sunshine in the morning and clouds move move in as the front approaches from the west by saturday evening. that will sweep in on sunday. only give us a few scattered flurries on sunday but probably not interrupt the game. here's how things look for the rest of the afternoon. increasing sunshine and highs only in the 30s. most of the region, mid 30s and near 40 south of the metro area by the next couple of hours. we'll have a gentle wind and then overnight tonight, clear sunsets at 4:59. a light wind and temperatures from the mid 30s early evening to up you are 20s and near 30 by midnight and continue to drop tomorrow morning all the way down to the low mid 20s again and afternoon highs should make it to the low 40s tomorrow afternoon with lots of sunshine and then on saturday, it's looking increasingly cloudy.

the last time wesa it was in the 2003-2004 flu season which was notoriously bad. so i don't expect this one to have a lull right now. especially with the cold snap that we're seeing in the northeast. people are coming in and closing their doors so we're passing germs more readily back and forth. so i suspect that this is going to continue through the winter and into early spring. >> and dr. snyderman adds the strongest cases of the flu are in the south and eastern states. still time to try to protect yourself. doctors say everyone six months old and up should get a flu shot. we're all hoping rg3 can make the seahawks sick, very sick. robert griffin iii takes question after question every single week and now he can say he knows what it's like to be on the other side. >> coach, we just wanted to know -- good game plan together.

moms to-be, here's the reason to talk to your babies before they're born. a new study says babies begin learning the sounds of their native language before birth. researchers in washington state studied 40 infants from the u.s. and 40 infants from sweden. the newborns were tested on vowell sounds in 17 languages. when babies heard a vowell in their own language, they paused. and researchers believe that means that they recognized those sounds. today's "weekend scene" a plan for your weekend. we have highlights.
