don't go here but are praying for him. >> neighbors say they saw the driver of the mack truck jump out to help but say it was too late. preliminary investigations indicate sinclair pulled out collect directly in front of the truck. in ellicott city, erica gonzalez, news 4. >> what might have been thought of as a trip to paradise ended, in fact, in tragedy for two women in prince george's county. they were killed in a crash on jamaica's northern coast yesterday. the car they were riding in collided with a minibus. two of the victims, 53-year-old claudette grant and 34-year-old vanessa brown were from upper marlboro, maryland. a third woman who died lived in new york. the driver of a car and a male passenger both survived. >> a former death row inmate in virginia will spend another few weeks in prison after an appeals court sftepped in at the 11th hour to stop his release this evening. his 2002 murder

conviction was overturned in 2011 because of allegations of misconduct by the prosecution. yesterday, a judge ordered wolf to be released today. a federal appeals court in richmond decided this afternoon to hear the case later this month. tonight, a bus kicked off a crime crackdown operation in prince george's county. police plan to go from neighborhood to neighborhood to catch up with criminals. jackie benson is in district heights with more on the mission for the new year. hi, jackie. >> reporter: this means 125 exfra cops on the street in the mond month of january. they didn't have to look far. even before the news conference began, two men were stopped after an officer thought he smelled mj comarijuana coming fm his car. crimes continued to infuriate citizens in what are being called transforming

neighborhoods, mostly insigh the beltway. crimes like car theft on mason street in district heights, a stolen car sits with the doors left open. that's wait the two two alleall suspects left it when they ran. minutes later a few blocks away, they take two suspects into custody, a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old suspected of break into the car owner's house, taking his keys and his car. >> the arrests that we're generate aepg tting are from ci we're contacting. the wave team special assignment team. >> a still photo of the weapons seized so far is a chilling reminder of the type of deadly force officers have taken off the streets. >> we'll also be doing follow-up on the guns to determine where those guns came from and how they came into pot --

possessions arrests during this initiative. >> officers are also focusing on the very serious, very complained about problem of burglaries. reporting live in district heights, jackie benson, news 4. >> thanks. officials at an element toir school have rescinded the suspension of a first grader who pointed his finger at another student and reportedly said pow. that information according to the family's lawyer tonight. the 6-year-old child was disciplined last month at the roscoe nicks elementary school in montgomery county. the boy's lawyer said the family received support from all of the country. a traffic headache for drivers tonight in arlington, virginia. crews are working on a water main break. the westbound lanes of the boulevard are closed.

they'll be back open at least temporarily after a water main break last night. crews plan to finish repairs to the road after the rush hour tomorrow morning. >> it's another cold night out there. doug is here with a look at the temperatures that continue to fall. and we could be looking at even more water main breaks. >> yeah. anytime you get below freezing, that water is going to expand in those mains. that's why we have seen a couple of those break bps we are at the freezing mark. look at the winds, right now out of the south at 6 miles an hour. starting to gusts, especially near our northern zones. that puts our wind capitol hill down to 26. 23 in gaithersburg, 22 in hagerstown, winds gusting to the north, upwards of 20 to 25 miles an hour. it's going to be a rather windy day tomorrow. take a look at manassas and culpepper coming in at 21 degrees. it's going to be a very cold morning tomorrow. how long is this cold air going to stick around? the complete forecast coming up in a minute. >> thanks, doug. the 113th congress is officially

in session tonight following today's swearing in ceremonies. joan boehner was easily re-elected as speaker of the house, despite recent criticism from his colleagues over fiscal cliff negotiations. and a cancellation of aid for victims of super storm sandy. tim cain reported for his first day on the job, saying congress needs to do a better job. ben carden also sworn in today for his second term. you could get $50,000 to help the government stop illegal robocalls. the federal trade commission is asking for the public's help. they need new ideas to block those automated calls to cell phone and land lines. the person who smits the winning entry will get a money and a trip here to d.c. to present the solution. january 17 is is the last day to submit an idea. we invite you to nbc washington.com and search for robocalls to find out how to enter. seattle fans may be planning

a trip to the east coast for the playoff showdown against the redskins on sunday. >> quite a showdown it will be, too. two rookie quarterbacks, pretty good guys, even though one is a short little thing. >> i don't think anybody out in seattle is too disappointed with russell wilson as their quarterback. they love him out there. it is really the year of the rookie quarterback in the nfl. and two of the top three face off at fedex field on sunday. it's just the second time ever the two rookie quarterbacks have gone head to head in a playoff game. robert griffin iii has helped resurrect the redskins. and russell wilson, no longer a secret in seattle. on sunday, wilson tied peyton manning's rookie record with his 26th touchdown pass of the season. wilson's 115 passer rating in december, the highest of any quarterback in the nfl. like his rookie counterpart, rg3, wilson can run as well. for the season, griffin is the

nfl's third-ranked quarterback. while will sob is right behind him at number four. >> i definitely think we have very similar qualities. you know, i think he does a great job of throwing the football and running the football. you know, both strengths of our game. i think the biggest thing is, you know, i'm trying to focus on what i can do to help our football team win. that's my focus this whole entire week. >> i did get to meet him a couple of times and talk to him. you know, great guy. but, you know, like i said, i don't play against quarterbacks. it's not my job to compare. you guys will do that for the next week. it's just good to see him being so successful. but at the same time, you know, i want our defense to go out and shut them down. >> so robert griffin iii has been slowed down by that knee and having to wear the knee brace. russell wilson has had 16 touchdown passes and two interceptions in his last eight games. i think robert has been hearing this all week long. he's going to explode on sunday. >> without a question of a

young. the motorcycle officer was killed in an accident on monday while responding to a call in bristow. young's funeral is tomorrow morning. he is survived by his wife and three children. >> former congresswoman gabrielle giffords will be in newtown, connecticut, tomorrow. giffords survived a mass shooting in arizona a couple of yes ago. she'll attend an event at a private home. in the meantime, students at sandy hook elementary and their teachers went back to a school for the first time today since that massacre last month. there was heightened security at the school. it's at a new location now in a neighboring town of monroe. police were there as more than 400 students arrived for their first day back. there's outrage tonight over a gun show ad that ran next to a news story today about the sandy hook students returning to class. the newspaper -- the stamford advocate is in a town about 40 miles from newtown. the publisher of the paper

called the ad placement insensitive. he apologized. two other out of state newspapers also have apologized for making the same mistake. the house of representatives is expected to vote on a partial bill for $9 billion in aid for hurricane sandy victims. that vote is scheduled for tomorrow. house speaker john boehner originally withdrew the legislation but changed his mind after officials in new york and new jersey voiced their outrage. the senate will be in session tomorrow in anticipation of the house vote. the bill is part of a $60 billion package that will be considered later this month. does hollywood know more about the hunt for osama bin laden than congress? that is the question tonight from some senior senators as the new movie "zero dark thirty" is about to premier. the issue is over a scene in which a detainee is water boarded then gives information on osama bin laden's courier. the cia has told congress that the best information on the courier came before any enhanced interrogation techniques were

used. there's also a senatorial review under way to see if filmmakers got access to classified documents. >> two homeless men being hailed as heroes tonight after they saved a man from an attempted robbery. it happened this week in cincinnati, ohio. the attack was caught on surveillance video. police say the man had just taken money out of an atm. video shows a suspect came up behind the man and tried to grab the money. the victim was knocked to the ground. that's when the first homeless man jumped in to help. >> i was screaming for help. and at that time, you know, naturally instincts, you know, help somebody. >> police arrested the suspect a short time later. one of the men that went to rescue said his only hope is that somebody would do the same thing for him. freezing water pipes and freezing people out there tonight. >> and it's -- i wouldn't -- it's almost about time. we've been waiting for winter. we haven't seen a whole lot of

it. we have snowmageddon 2009-2010. that was a winter. mother nature trying to make its presence felt just a little bit across the area tonight. up towards northern montgomery county. a little earlier today. some of the lakes frozen over today. 38 degrees, low at 30. many areas, though, in the teens early this morning. today was the coldest day since february 12 of last year. a very cold air mas making its way in right now as we continue to cool off. winds out of the south at 6 miles an hour. puts our wind chill at 26. so a very chilly night. and take a look at the number, already down into the teens. 19 in manassas, 21 in culpepper. still 32 in leesburg. notice the normally colder areas around martinsburg, 35. that's. >> the warmest temperature. that's normally one of the coldest spots. we have wind up towards the north and that's going to create a bigger wind chill, but also

going to keep temperatures from dropping all that much. the coldest temperatures will be in northern virginia and portions of southern maryland. radar, nothing to show you across our region. even when we widen out, there's not going to be a whole lot going on over our region. clear skies right now. a little storm system will pass off towards the north. as far as snowfall is concerned, how about 67% of the country now in snowfall. we are looking at some snowfall. that doesn't include our area, but look up towards portions of wisconsin. you want to see green bay, wisconsin? how about bam low field, yeah, that i ear clearing out lambeau today. as green bay takes on minnesota. guess what? that came right here on nbc 4 coming up on saturday night at 8:00. that's going to be a good one. aaron rodgers against, you know, that running back guy, adrian peterson. now, as far as our weather is concerned. how about our snowfall in nothing around the i-95 corridor, but back to the west, even through western montgomery

county and western loudoun. we'll see a good chance of rain by the end of the seven-day period. chilly conditions today will lead to a rather chilly day tomorrow. lots of sunshine, though. i think the winds are going to pick up. that's going to put wind chills into the mid 30s all day tomorrow. saturday, still quite cool. temperatures are going to rebound, though, back into the 40ed. tomorrow morning, mostly clear and cold. temperatures 18 to 28 degrees. temperatures are not going to warm up a whole lot tomorrow. but it will be a little bit warmer. 43 on your friday. 45 on saturday. 47 on sunday. temperatures at 44 degrees on monday. and right now, next week, look at those numbers. all that snow, melting quickly. 48 tuesday and into the mid 50s on wednesday and thursday. so we've got some warmer air coming in after tonight. >> a short, brief advise it from winter. >> very brief. >> pnc bank has e-mailed customers tonight to tell them
