the public in locating it. if you look down the street here, though, you can see that we still have police activity. we are on tarc win avenue, a neighborhood off old branch avenue. police are looking for one, possibly two suspects that are involved in a breaking and entering situation in charles county. a situation that happened earlier this morning. now, police got that call in charles countiment again, a break inat a liquor store. there was a police pursuit that then occurred down branch avenue. there was a situation where the suspects bailed out of the vehicle. it's unclear whether they crashed or just pulled over and bailed to get away from officers on foot. but they stopped the car on branch avenue. branch avenue was closed in both directions for a time. has reopened. now, a canine dog was released after those suspects fled on foot. the canine, after being led off the leash, apparently disappeared for a while. we saw officers throughout the

recovery funding. the money would pay flood insurance claims for more than 100,000 throughout the northeast. it's part of a larger $60 billion package the senate has already approved, but the house did not vote on before adjourning for the new session which began yesterday. even with anger over the delay of aid for sandy victims, the house voted to give john boehner a second term as speaker. >> i present the people's gavel to the speaker of the house, john boehner. may god bless you. [ applause ] >> boehner got the house's top job, even despite several conservatives voting for someone else. it was a symbolic protest of boehner's decision to hold off on voting for sandy aid. after the vote, boehner said the federal deficit is still a problem that lawmakers must address. we'll get a look at the december jobs report. the economy added 146,000 jobs in november. analysts expect between 150 thuz to 200,000 jobs were added last month. economists warn that increase

could be short-lived and say the increase could be related to the aftereffects of hurricane sandy. also this morning, idaho senator michael crepea will be in court to face dui charges. the republican was arrested just after midnight on december 23rd in alexandria. he was pulled over after running a red light. he failed several sobriety tests and was found to have a blood alcohol level of .11. he's mormon and he's apologized for what he calls a mistake and won't fight the charges. he's due in court at account this morning. news 4's melissa mollet is at the live desk with breaking news. >> good morning. we have new video to show you that just made its way into the newsroom. the 14-year-old pakistani girl shot by the taliban over her campaign for girls education has just been released from the hospital. she's leaving the hospital in the uk. she was recovering for the past two months. she's heading home now but will have to come back latian, early

february for -- melissa mollet, news 4. a former jail guard in prince george's county expected to plead guilty in connection with a death of an inmate. >> he's accused of ignoring the inmate and letting him die. a medical examiner initially ruled white's death a homicide but later said white may have strangled himself. mcintosh was charged with lying to law enforcement. supposed to go to trial next week. funeral services set for a police officer killed in a crash. last night fellow police honored officer chris young with a line of motorcycles outside a chapel. young was a motorcycle officer killed in an accident monday while responding to a call in bristow. a private ceremony is set to begin at 10:00 this morning. classmates are praying for a howard county teen involved in a crash who is now in critical condition. 18-year-old jeffrey sinclair had

four other teens in the car with him when he tried to leave the parking lot at his high school. his civic pulled out into route 99 into the path of a mack truck. classmates say the intersection is known for problem spots for student drivers. >> it's al hilly type area much it's a hard drop to see. >> rescuers took the four other passengers in sinclair's car to the hospital with minor injuries. the truck driver was also not seriously hurt. six minutes after 5:00 now. a little more than 48 hours until the redskins return to the playoffs. this time they have home field advantage. but they're also facing a hot young team that has sent washington packing before. the redskins come into sunday's match wrup with the seahawks having one seven straight. seahawks have won seven straight. but the seahawks -- over the last four games, their defense allowed less than 11 points per

happening today former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords will be in newtown, connecticut. she'll attend a private event for the victims of the sandy hook elementary school shooting. last month a gunman forced his way into that school and killed 20 student and six staff members. giffords was shot in the head two years ago at a campaign event in tucson, arizona. six others died including a 9-year-old girl. the gunman there, jarod lee loughner was sentenced to life in prison in november. 5:16 now. a newspaper publisher is apologizing for putting an ad next to an article about the tragedy at sandy hook. the media group runs the newspaper based about 40 miles from newtown. the ad publicized an antique gun show that starts tomorrow. the publisher called it insensitive and said it would take steps to make sure it didn't happen again. two other out of state newspapers also apologized for the same mistake. the man accused of committing a deadly shooting inside a colorado movie theater will be allowed to bring two

people to testify in his defense at a hearing next week. a judge ruled yesterday that two witnesses can testify in defense of james holmes at a preliminary hearing on monday. holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injured dozens more in a mass shooting last july. it's not clear who the witnesses will be. 17 after 5:00 now. the u.s. navy wants its sailors to stay away from the synthetic drug known as bath salts. to show that they're serious about their zero tolerance policy, they've released a psa of sorts getting a lot of attention. >> what's wrong with you? this video shows a sailor using the bath salts, which then sends him on a violent hallucinogenic fit and lands him in the hospital. he ends it with the message that it's not a fad, it's a nightmare. some called the video over the top. the navy and doctors have said it's an accurate depiction of the dangers of this synthetic drug. a developing story now.

pnc bank is warning customers about unusually high volume of traffic online. the bank says the uptick in online traffic is consistent with threatened cyber attacks. pnc says it's taken steps to block the trafb. the bank says this is an access issue, not an issue of account security. as a result the bank says some customers may not be able to log into their online banking accounts. is that what i think it is? >> when was the last time you saw bin laden in. >> three senators want the cia to prove it did not mislead makers of the movie zero dark thirty. it depict the 201 raid that killed osama bin laden. a senate investigation revealed no useful intelligence came from harsh interrogation methods like waterboarding. acting cia director said the techniques led to tips in the hunt for bin laden. the senators want more rell to back up his claim and share information -- hillary clinton will return

to work next week. clinton fainted and had a concussion last month and a doctor found a blood clot in her head. she spent nearly four days in the hospital. aides say clinton plans to speak about the deadly attack on the us consulate in benghazi, libya. she's working with congressional committees to set a date to testify. parking lot showdown between a school board member and high school student is caught on camera in georgia. now the school board member resigned over it. watch the teenager in the black pants in this video. she was trying to save a parking spot for a friend who had recently given birth. that's when the driver of that white van as you can see pug up struck her and then pulled into the spot. the girl had scuff marks on her jeans but was not hurt. it turns out that the driver was the vice chair of the county school board where the teen tends classes. she resigned from that position yesterday. she's also charged with reckless conduct. it has been more than a decade since the redskins last home playoff game and if you want to see the post-season

attacked is recovering well thanks in part to two good samaritans who happen to be homeless. a surveillance camera captured the beating one homeless man got between the attacker and the victim. a second homeless man ran over to help. both fought off the attacker. police caught up with him in an alley. >> hopefully this story shows us that the stereotypes are wrong. that people are people and folks jump in when needed. homeless or not homeless. >> the homeless men didn't know if the attacker had a weapon. but they're being praised this morning for doing what they could to intervene. this morning, we're getting a look at new pictures of mars from nasa's curiosity rover. take a look. this photograph was taken on december 19th. two artists pieced the black and white images together and added color to show what it might look like if you were standing on mars. another picture is generating some buzz online. this photo focuses in on a bright crumpled object on the ground. you see it right there. it's being dubbed marsharctian

police say she was last seen wearing black and pink pants and a black sweatshirt. has no cash or credit cards with her. anyone with information is asked to call police. this morning, a former death row inmate in virginia is still in jail after a new legal challenge. yesterday an appeals court stepped in just before wolfe was to be set free. wolfe was convicted of murder in 2002 but that conviction was overturned because of allegations of misconduct by the prosecution. a federal appeals court in richmond will hear the case later this month. a local elementary school changing its mind when it comes to disciplining a first grader suspended for pointing his finger at another student and reportedly saying pow. administrators at roscoe nix elementary in silver spring rescinded his suspension. this incident happened last month. the boy and his family received support from across the country. people in prince george's county may notice more police.

each night this month an extra 125 officers will be on the streets. they'll patrol areas considered transforming neighborhoods in prince george's county. it started with a number of arrests in district heights last night. police say their goal is to not just cut down on crime but get guns off the streets as well. >> we'll be doing follow-up on the guns to determine where the guns came from and how they came into the possession of the individuals who were arrested during this initiative. >> the department is getting the extra officers from divisions including narcotics, gangs and traffic enforcement units. federal civilian workers could soon see a bump in pay in the next few weeks. president obama's executive order for a federal pay freeze expires on march 27th. earlier language in the fiscal cliff deal tried to hold current salaries through this year. but the senate never voted on that version. the new congress could once again freeze pay as they negotiate a debt limit and spending cuts in the coming weeks. new teachers could soon be coming to virginia.

governor bob mcdonnell wants the state to take advantage of a national program called teach for america. that program is known for being like the peace corps where young teachers work in struggling and underachieving schools for a few years. the governor will ask them to bring the program to the commonwealth this fall saying it will close the achievement gap between students of different backgrounds. a new report says the overall total of water main breaks of 2012 was the lowest in six years according to the washington post. 2211 pipes broke or leaked in d.c. fairfax, montgomery and prince george's countys last year. that's 20 fewer than in 2011. nearly 900 fewer than 2007. there was a small spike in breaks in december because of the cold snap. one break happened in arlington, virginia. crews spent the night working along washington boulevard. the westbound lanes were closed between kirkwood road and north lincoln street for a few hours as a precaution. they have since reopened. when seattle comes to town

this weekend, they will see a familiar face on the redskins side of the ball. corner back josh wilson was drafted by the seahawks in 2007. spent three seasons there. in that time, he led the team in interceptions. but a trade to the redskins means a return home for wilson who played high school there and was a star for the terps in college. that makes sunday's game all that much sweeter. >> it's huge being from here. growing up here. i still remember in '91 we on the super bowl. i had my ripken jersey on. i was rooting for my favorite kicker. chip low miller. i'm excited as a player to be in this division but even more as a fan of the redskins. >> football is in wilson's blood. his father tim wilson played eight seasons with the houston oilers. >> a lot on the line for josh. that's awesome. >> of course, it's at lot on the line for every single player on the team. the showdown comes between two

they believe it's a team effort. >> that's why they both had success. go 'skins. sick calls left d.c. emergency crews shortha-handed one of the busiest nights of year. according to the washington post, nearly one-third of firefighters and ambulance staff scheduled to work on new year's eve called out sick. typically, 20 to 30 firefighters call in sick. but monday night, 97 workers were sick and in one case a stabbing victim went to the hospital on the back of a fire truck. the number wasn't unusual and might included employees on extended sick or injury leave. he blamed the district for inadequate staffing on a busy holiday. tragedy for two women from prince george's county. they were killed in a crash on the northern coast east of montego bay. the car they were in collided with a min you bus. 53-year-old claudette grant and 34-year-old vanessa brown were from maryland. a third woman who died lived in new york.

the driver of the car and another passenger survived. doctors are doing what they can to saved save a howard county teen. 18-year-old jeffrey sinclair had four other teens in the car with him. his honda civic pulled out on to route 99 into the past of a mack truck. the four other passengers are out of the hospital. classmates are now praying for sinclair who is in critical condition. >> people who don't go here are praying for us. >> right after the crash, neighbors say the truck driver jumped out to help. this morning, three teens were arlington are behind bars accused of firing at more than 200 cars. rayno so and chase -- they're charged with using bb guns to shoot at cars in arlington and fairfax counties and possibly as far away as virginia. some of the damaged cars belonged to police officers. in one case, the suspects took

something from a car according to police. officers say they plan man to make more arrests. the anything you might need store bruce variety in bethesda is preparing to close its doors. >> i know, tom. shop owners say they're no longer able to afford the lease for their downtown location. it's been a place to find crafts, school supplies, costumes and everything else you might need since 1953. the owners aren't exactly sure of the exact date of closing. they're currently working with brokers to find other location. too bad. another big box store could be coming to d.c. lowe's home improvement will hope open a store near the costco in northeast. it will be the first one in the district. construction on the store, which would be at 33rd street and south dakota could start as early as this summer. some georgetown residents are hoping a potentially noisy development plan winds up in the gutter. the old georgetown park mall is being gutted and renovated.

about a seven-minute ride from 301 on westbound 50 to the beltway at 64 miles an hour. looking great on metro. marc trains and the virginia railway express. aaron? >> thank you, mike. metro riders who use the red and orange lines can expect delays this weekend. on the red line, trains will single track between shady grove and twin brook as well as between judiciary square and rhode island avenue. buses replace orange line trains between east falls church and vienna. all work set to start at 10:00 tonight. should be wrapped up just in time for the monday morning commute. some more bike lanes could be coming to the district and even though the city is considered one of the most bike friendly cities in the country, many are worried about having more cyclists on the road. illinois avenue in northwest could be the latest spot in the city to see new bike lanes. our cameras caught several cyclists running red lights and narrowly missing cars and breaking other traffic rules. people are concerned that more bike lanes means more danger for cyclists and drivers unless

something is done. >> as someone who is 5:00 i have in the bicycle community, i recognize this. i try to tell people approximate it. >> it's important that folks act predictably. follow the traffic laws is the easiest way. >> d-dot wants to offer free bike safety classes and many bike share cycles have stickers with bike safety tips. 5:55 now. walmart claims to be the low price leader. but their latest round of boasting is not sitting well with competitors. shartia brantley has that and more. >> good morning, aaron. walmart is going on the defensive against charges by its rivals that its low prices ads are misleading. the wall street journal reports other competitors, including best buy and toys-r-us are complained to attorneys in more than a half dozen states that the ads make inaccurate comparisons to their prices. they also claim walmart is promoting products it doesn't have an ample supply in stores.
