touching on fedex field today as fans get ready for game day. good afternoon, everybody. >> first this year's flu is stronger and hitting earlier this season. the centers for disease control and prevention is reporting cases have taken a huge jump just in the last week. 41 states reporting major outbreaks and hospitals say they are overflowing with patients now. erica edwards explains why doctors are now saying this year's flu season could be as bad as the h1n1 outbreak of 2009. >> reporter: doctors' offices are inundated. >> people have really high fever, severe body aches, nasal congestion, cough. >> reporter: the centers for disease control and prevention now reports 41 states shown here in brown have wide-spread flu activity. >> it has been a crazy flu season. we're out of our tamiflu right now. >> influenza is the viral

infection every winter that can put even a healthy person into the intensive care unit in 48 hours. >> reporter: max died from complications of the flu the day after christmas. athletic and seemingly the picture of health, this picture was taken just 24 hours before he was admitted to the hospital. >> it started out as a flu, turned into pneumonia, with a staph infection on top of that. those three things dom bind took over quickly. >> reporter: his family says he did not get a flu shot this year. no one knows if it would have saved his live, but experts say the vaccine is a good match to the circulating virus, either preventing it altogether or taking some of the sting out of the illness. >> it can prevent you getting pneumonia, even though you may have a tough of the flu. >> reporter: most hospitals strongly encourage all their employees get the flu shot. duke university health system reacted to the growing outbreak last week. >> we've limited visitations to

yellow police tape closes the 500 block of kenyon street northwest. behind the line, investigators bag up evidence. residents say it was a disturbing sight. a man in the road yelling for help. >> he was hollering for help, and nobody would stop. the cars go right past him. he just stood in the middle of the street, cars around him, he took off the jacket and i saw the blood. i thought, wow, he must have stabbed or shot. finally i heard somebody must have come out and helped him. >> reporter: police say the victim is a taxicab driver. he was attacked by a man with a knife. the suspect stabbed him and then made off with his black pearl taxi. for fellow cabbies, the crime is a reminder of how dangerous their job can be. >> every night, you know, i don't feel safe driving a cab. it can happen anywhere. >> it's just very sad, but then,

we have to do what we have to do to make a living. >> reporter: your worst fear? >> worst fear, being, you know carjacked, you know, robbed, yeah. >> reporter: the suspect took off in that stolen cab, and police are still looking for him. anyone with information, you're asked to call metropolitan police. in northwest, megan mcgrath, news4. >> the stolen taxi is a black 2007 chevy impala, with d.c. plates that read 0139h. again if you see it you're urged to call police. people lined the streets of woodbridge to say good-bye to one of prince william county's finest. the procession for chris young passed by two police stations. it followed a funeral attended by hundreds of law enforcement. young died monday after responding to a call, you'll recall. his motorcycle was hit by a minivan. some at today's service never

met officer young, but they say they were touched by hearing the impact he had on so many people. >> an amazing officer, person, father and amazing man listens to the stories from his two brothers, the officers who knew him, it was almost as if i knew him. seth lemmon reports on the charity that officer young was involved with that is now returning hess generosity. republican senator michael crapo will lose his driver's license for a year after he pleds guilty to drunk driving today. the lawmakers from idaho was arrested in the early morning hours of december 23rd after he ran a red light in alexandria and failed feel sobriety tests. after the arrest he immediately apologized to his colleagues, and today he did it again. >> i have on occasion had alcoholic drinks in my apartment in washington, d.c.

it was a poor choice to use alcohol to relieve stress, and went at odds with my personally held religious beliefs. >> senator crapo has said in the past he avoids alcohol because he is a mormon. he is married with five children. in addition to losing his license for a year, he will be required to pay a fine and complete an alcohol safety program. on capitol hill, the first major order of business for the new congress, relief for the victims of superstorm sandy. today the house approved nearly $10 billion in aid to pay for flood insurance claims. jennifer johnson is on the hill where lawmakers have been outraged, baas the bill's passening has been delayed. >> that's right. the new congress began with often emotional, angry testimony from lawmakers demanding more aid for victims of superstorm sandy. lawmakers from the northeast were leaving nothing to chance, furious that money for flood insurance claims have been held

up for victims of superstorm sandy. >> they've been suffering. they have suffered long enough. they need to hear from their government. >> this is a total, total disaster in helping those people. >> reporter: the vote was delayed earlier this week by how speaker john boehner unleashing a string of protests, now some republicans claim that the program was out of money, adding to the debt. >> the national flood insurance program is broke. it is beyond broke. it is now taxpayer bailout broke. >> the yays are 354, the nays 67. >> reporter: the bill easily passed but 67 house republicans voted no. another bill will be voted on january 15th, an angry start for the 113th congress with more to come. lawmakers have two months to tacks massive government spending cuts.

can't forget about the ravens. we do have a clear sky, some clouds to our west, those trying to push in, they won't make it too far to the east. look at this 24 hour temperature change. yesterday we had highs in the upper 30s across the areas. we're some eight degrees higher here. look at that, the push up with the temperatures over a good chunk of the mid-atlantic and down toward the society. 37 degrees, still in cincinnati, 32 in pittsburgh, tomorrow with more of a westerly wind, we'll cool down just a bit. instead of 45, low 40s not bad at all. it's back up again with the mercury on sunday. currently with a westerly wind. your temperature at 45 degrees. again throughout the area, with a bit of wind, it feels like we're in the 30s, and that's where we're going to be for the evening, dropping down to the low 30s. our windchill readings at 9:00 we're at 36 for the actual air

we all get it, i guess. this is the one i really didn't know. fireplace safety, liz, as many of us like to use our fireplace it is, what is the best way to dispose of ashes? >> this is important. the montgomery county division of solid waste services and fire and rescue service gave us this answer. both say that fireplace and wood stove ashes retain enough heat to ignite for several days after the fire goes out. the ashes can safely cool by simply remaining in the fireplace, or you can put them in a metal ash bucket. remember, never put your ashes in a paper bag, a plastic bag, cardboard box, plastic bucket. store them in the metal ash bucket and keep it away from your deck and other combustible materials. people do not realize how long they stay hot. finally. the last question from marsha through e-mail. she's doing a lot of holiday baking. what's the difference, liz,

between baking powder and baking soda? >> yeah, we turn to the chemistry page on about.com for this answer. it says both baking powder and soda are leavening agents. baking soda is pure sodium bicarb gnat, four times stronger than baking powder, usually added when recipes contain an akiddic ingredient and reacts as soon as it's mixed. baking powder, on the other hand contains sodium bicarb gnat and other ingredients. it reaction as soon as it's mixed, and then reacts again when it's heated. so there is a difference. don't mix them up. if you have a question, send it to us. connect with me on twitter, and on facebook.

windchills will be in the teens north and west. then your high tomorrow, we get the sunshine in here, the hrp moving in, that could allow our wind to settle down by the afternoon. so the high anywhere from 40 to 43 degrees on saturday. now take a look at sunday. sunday we bump it up to 45 to 47 degrees. sure some early morning clouds, but by the afternoon the clouds are out of here, full sunshine across the area. if you go to the game, it's all about layers. back to you. this sunday's showdown will likely come down to the performance of two rookie quarterbacks who have both lit up the league this your. our rg3 and russell wilson have both had record seasons the put them up side by side. wilson had a great year tied peyton manning's rookies record with 26 touchdowns. he had just ten interceptions.

police down in center florida believe three women were counsel founding clerks at a walmart. they helped themselves for merchandise and saw cash refriends for items they never bought. >> el with knew how busy the stores were. cops believe the chaos may have helped. a woman with a shopping cart. when the first cart is full, the woman with the cart number two steps up and the clerk keeps ringing things up. two carts, but one order. the first woman pushes her cart out of the store, implying her friend would pay for all of it.

>> the first woman says i'll bring it to the car, and just rolled it out. >> cops say woman number two said her first was in the first cart and she needed to get it. guess what? both women split. >> never allow that person to leave with a whole basket of items without playing. >> reporter: flash forward to the next day. a third woman comes in with a computer. it turns out the serial number says that computer was part of this receipt from the say before. woman or suspect number three wanted a refund for a stolen computer, so walmart staffer filled her in. >> he was explaining that this was a stolen item, and at that point she exited the store. >> reporter: she also vanished. cops believe all three were somehow in on the whole thing. now police are looking for the suspects and released this video, hoping someone recognizes them. when "news4 at 4" returns, a fight over a handicapped sign that lands an elderly man behind bars after police say he

glue this winter i didn't get a lot of complaints about the cold. it's been okay, but through next week, we keep the mild around. as i said, you don't want to give up on our chance to see snow. we keep getting the calls, e-mails, tweets. well, there's some indication that around mid-january we're going to get back to cold. so, of course today we had, you on the other side of 40 degrees. the weekend, you can see it there in the middle. most of next week, gentlemen it will be mild, but then a big drop around mid january, where it does get cold. lasting frigid air. all we need are the storms to meet up with the cold air, and we could have an increased chance of snow. mid-january we could be looking at that.

as far as the temperatures go during the overnight period, again cold. then tomorrow with sunshine, not bad, we're at 40 degrees in gaithersburg, 41 in leesburg, 42 in manassas, sunshine throughout the area expected tomorrow. again a little breezy, too, during the daytime hours, and the wind will be back, too, at the begin of the week on monday, but right now sunday is looking like calm winds around the area. it's the mountains that could see some accumulation. some of those ski resource, and even up into pennsylvania. so great weekend to go skiing. clear skies, breezy early. by tomorrow morning, 21 to 30. tomorrow afternoon sunshine early. it gets chili. here's a look at your four-day
