families of fallen officer. >> it's very humbling to learn of an officer of his caliber who died in the line of duty brings everything to light about why we do things. >> reporter: when young's brother spoke, he remembered a man of honor saying upwas sometimes reluctant to write a ticket, because he didn't want to ruin their day. but his tremendous influence was evident, through the family members he inspired to become police officers, or through the thousands who gathered to pay their respected. >> so it doesn't matter whether i knew him one day or a year, he was a man, he wore a badge, and he was my brother. >> donations in honor of his memory can be sent to the prince william county headquarters, and all the proceeds will go to law enforcement united to help the families of fallen officers. thank you. a guilty plea in a notorious case from a maryland jail. a corrections worker admitted he did not seek medical attention for an inmate found hanging by a

sheet. ronny white died in 2008, less than two days after being charged with killing a police officer. today jail employees anthony mcintosh pleaded guilty to falsification of records in a federal investigation. he was released on probation. ahead tonight on "news4 at 6," tracee wilkins has the latest from the courthouse on what the officer says happened that day. now to some breaking news out of fairfax county. the chopper 4 over the scene of a car that slammed into a building. police have the area shut down for a gas leak this afternoon. just moments ago officers told us that the leak has been capped but it could take a while before traffic gets back to normal. still ahead a pilot accused of trying to fly a plane while drunk. what tipped off the police.

gerald christian son was taken into custody around 6:00 this morning at the mind miss airport. tsa agent said they smelled alcohol on the pilot. officers confronted him while doing preflight checks. he was arrested for failing a breathalyzer -- american airlines released a statement saying the safety of our customers and employees comes first. coughing, sneezing, fever, aches and pains, it's flu season. and it's upon us. >> flu cases are rising sharply, and that includes in the washington area. doreen has more on what doctors are saying. >> instead last year pretty wild. this week looks like a whole different story.

doctors tell us that waiting room around here are full of patients z patients suffering from the flu. the latest information from the centers for disease control shows that flu is now widespread in virginia and maryland. those states are shown here in red. d.c. did not provide enough data for analysis. d.c. doctors say cases that started started to spike here this week and the virus they've seen circulating seems to be really severe. >> people are getting very sick from this strain. people are getting hospitalized. they're getting pneumonias, they're getting sent to intensive care. so those people who need to get the flu shots should, and that includes everyone. >> it is definitely not too late to get a flu shot if you haven't gotten one yet. that's your best preventionful the cdc is recommending everyone other the age of six months get a flu shot. this vaccine has shown to be a

good match, too, against the particular viruses circulating this year. so that's one more reason to get your flu shot. we've had problems with vaccine shortages in the past, but this year there's plenty available. if you do get sick, please stay home, don't go to work or to school. you don't want to be spreading the flu to those around you. also, we want to remind everyone, hand washing is so important. the flu germs can live on surfaces for up to eight hours. that is also the smartest thing you can do to prevent getting the flu. wash your hands often. >> it's not too late to get a flu shot. no, it is not. go. >> thanks, doreen. stloo redskins fans are showing their spirit, they're capturing it in photos. check out the evidence and to get in on the fun, send us the pictures of whatever ufr covered with burgundy and gold.

side. take a look at the number, cooler to the north, 37 at frederick, 39 in cull pitcher, 4959 fredericksburg, but once again the windchill will be the keep here, winds gusting to 20 to 30 miles an hour, so windchilling are in the 20s. that's where they're going to stay this evening. if you're going out and about, it will be a cool evening. nothing to show you on the radar picture. i don't expect to see anything until possibly tomorrow night. could be a few flurries tomorrow night into early on sunday. not going to amount to much, but you may see a flurry or two. right now a little storm system moving through, that's what's providing us with a bit of that cloud cover. now all eyes on the game. i've got this really cool graphic. lots of sunshine, chilly today, chilly tomorrow, sunshine tomorrow, but it is chilly. another system moves by. we should soo flurries tomorrow night, but most of sunday looking great, including as we head down to fedex field.

we have breaking news. out of maryland's highest court with two people fighting over a seat in the house of delegates, the court of appeals has ruled that neither one is entitled to it any ofly allston was ousted s the prince george's county democratic central committee nominated gregory hall, but withdrew, after learning he had a criminal record from 20 years ago. they both sued, arguing they each had a right to the position. now that this court has denied

their claims, they would have to appeal all the way to the federal level. this is a story that riveted our area. late this afternoon there was a plea deal for the man accused of killing his estranged wife and her young son. prosecutors say curtis lopez beat them to death in montgomery county in october of last year. news4's derrick ward has more on what happens now. he concedes there's enough to find him gidget. >> reporter: they say about an hour after the surveyian footening was taken, he got this base babb from mcwane's storage

the search for william began immediately, but he was already dead, his body found in clarks burg, his skill crushed with this baseball bat. jane had reservations about leaving william alone with him. >> all we know is what she told other people. when williams would come home, he went downstairs to other neighbors instead of being alone with the defendant at that time. when lopez was arrested in north carolina, he had dna evidence and property from the victims on them. there was a video surveyian trail. still this case may not have qualified for the death penalty. there's a moratorium, in any ways in maryland, but prosecutors say they will seek life without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on april 17th. former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords is in newtown, connecticut this evening, meeting privately with families of victims in last month's

shooting at sand hook elementary. adam lanza killed 20 students and 6 adults before taking his own life. giffords heself survived a shooting merely two years ago now. it left her critically wounded and killed six others. giffords resigned from congress last year. ahead in the second term and second inauguration, president obama is making a big push for public service now. this year's public ceremony falls on martin luther king day. in keeping with tradition, the president and vice president senior encouraging voters to take part in a day of service. that saturday, that's 919th, you can even register for the official inaugural website until the national day of service section. metro is telling they will one 17 consecutive hours of rush hour service starting at 4:00 in the morning, ending at 9:00, and expect to pay peak fees.

tobily accurate. she added it was freezing cold. they had been waiting a long time. so there you go. a new york man will be allowed to sue the police department because he was arrested after he game a police officer the finger. a federal appeals court today ruled the gesture is an ancient gesture of insult, not the basis for a reasonable suspicion of a crime. this case dates all the way back to 2006 when a married couple noticed a police officer pointing a radar device at their car. the husband extended his middle finger outside the car. he was arrested. a lower court tossed out his lawsuit after police insisted they stop the couple, because the gesture made them concerned for the wife's safety. still ahead if big brother is watching, he's also cashing in. and speed cameras, and why it has one lawmakers so upset. i'm liz crenshaw.
