what doctors are now saying about his surgery and next season for the redskins. stroke of good luck at a local goodwill store. we begin with the highway worker and father of 15 children killed on the job. >> it happened north of baltimore when a car veered off the road and through a work zone. two men we killed including victor jackson of northeast d.c. shomari stone live now with reaction from the victim any mother. shomari. >> reporter: good evening, jim, doreen. the victim any mother tells me she is heartbroken. her son was replacing barrels like this one here on the side of the road. suddenly a car hit and killed him. >> hurt. very hurt. >> reporter: mitzi jackson is filled with sadness mourning the loss of her only son, 41-year-old victor jackson. a father of 15 kids. >> he was about his children -- all of them.

he knew all of the kids and that's would be the hardest part. >> he had a hard dangerous job replacing barrels on u.s. 40 to manage traffic north of baltimore this morning. suddenly police say a man in the car, veered into the clearly marked construction zone. >> he was in the right lane. for unknown reasons he veered into the left lane after passing into the work zone area. >> he hit and killed victor jackson from northeast d.c. and another man from maryland. both work for the construction company. >> if it is posted work area, slow down. >> reporter: maryland state highway administration says drivers need to slow down and pay attention near construction work zones. statewide three people were killed, 688 were injured in work zone related crashes in 2011. in virginia, there were 11 deaths and more than 1,800 injuries. >> it's not going to hurt if

anything it is going to help. >> reporter: police are questioning the driver and will decide whether to press charges. live in chevy chase, maryland, shomari stone, news 4. >> crumpled park police cruiser the result of a joint operation in the district. d.c. police tell us they were assisting park police in a robbery case in the petworth area. when the accident with the cruiser and a car happened near 14th and upshore streets. nobody was hurt. both are back open. >> the 19-year-old bay care employee facing abuse charges tonight. a witness captured an incident on video. police say jonathan cumming admitted to kicking a toddler. the day care was being run out of a home in upper marlboro. it was not licensed and since shut down. >> a security camera shows a thief in the act. police say the guy didn't have any trouble getting into the deep because the doors were unlocked. the car was parked outside a home in village park, plaza, chevy chase over the new year's holiday. no word on what the robber got

away with. so far nobody has been arrested. rg3 resting after he had knee surgery in florida. doctors say the surgery was a success. >> dan hellie, the procedure and how long it could be before the franchise quarterback gets on the football field? >> a big variance in the timetable for his return. that's what we are finding out, six to 12 months before robert griffin iii its ready for action. statement released by his surgeon, dr. james andrews says they repaired his acl and reconstructed his acl and they hope and believe rg 3 will be ready for the 2013 season because of his high motivation. motivation is great. but you can't be sure the redskins aren't taking any chances with griffin this time around. he will stay in florida to start rehab and won't put any weight on the right leg for the first six weeks after the surgery. first two months of rehab, most

kus of cue of a dog in distress. firefighters used a long rope to get to the dog and pull him out once he was back on solid ground he seemed fine getting right on his feet and shaking off the cold water. capin and the crew of a ferry that crashed into a dock in new york city. will talk with investigators from the national transportation safety bureau tomorrow. that ferry was arriving in lower manhattan from new jersey when it slammed into the dock. the collision threw passengers to the ground. down stairs, against walls, seats, windows. more than 70 of the nearly 330 people on board were injured. tonight, a call from d.c.'s department of transportation to repair the deteriorating south capital street bridge. channel 4 got a rare look at the 63-year-old structure today. rust, cracks, holes, all visit bill underneath the bridge.

70 to 80,000 cars drive over the bridge every day. officials say the bridge is safe, but d-dot proposing a $6640 million budget to renovate it. goodwill calls it one of the most valuable donations it has ever received. somebody dropped off a rare late 19th century painting. the person who turned it in probably had no idea what it was worth. richard jordan in manassas to show us how an eye for art is going to bring in big bucks. >> we receive different things. this is a very nice piece. >> maria rivera can peck out a diamond in the rough. rivera has been sorting charitable donations for years. but has never seen anything like the old oil painting of a woman drinking tea now valued at $12,000. >> it is a real deal. >> the goodwill of greater washington received the pricey painting two months ago. the donation was dropped off at manassas store and denation center. the woman in the painting is no

mona lisa, but rivera knew there was something special about her. >> i said let me take this one out. >> rivera set the picture aside and sure enough, the hunch proved right. >> we decided it was in our best interest at that point to get it appraised, authenticated. which we did only to learn it is an authentic painting worth $12,000. >> good will hopes the donation was an act of good will. but maybe not the charity fully expects at least some one, maybe, two, three people will come forward to say they are the ones that made the contribution. but there is no way to verify it. it goes back to the old rule on the playground. finder's keepers. >> the painting will not be for sale like donations collected. it will go to the highest bidder on goodwill's website. the proceed then will be used for job training. rivera had a feeling the painting would pay off. >> i didn't know how much at that time. but i said, we have some money here. >> in manassas, richard jordan,

news 4. case of creative grooming caused quite a stir in a neighborhood in hampton roads, virginia. people called 911 after they saw what they thought was a lion on the loose. >> i'd lake to report a lion siting across from the zoo. >> i'm driving down granby street right before the zoo and there's a lie yn that ran across the street. a baby lion. >> don't you know it wasn't a lie yn at all. it was a dog. his name is charles. a 4-year-old labradoodle, groomed to look like the mascot at old dominion university. charles is already well known on the campus. such a celebrity there he has his own facebook and his own twitter account. >> of course he does. >> a friendly looking lion. >> how about that? >> pretty cool. >> yeah. >> weird, weird weather tonight. >> some really weird weather.

really all across the area. frederick earlier at 43. we saw fredericksburg at 63. 20-degree temperature difference. right now some areas really chilly. others quite warm. let's take a look and show you how the day ended across our region. toward the airport. saw a high temperature of 50 degrees. that came late in the day. much of the day at the airport on the cool side. once the wind begin to shift. we actually did see the warm-up to 50. after a low this morning of 34. started off quite cool. yeah, what a difference. all depend on where you are. and this is what i am talking about. take a look at high temperatures around the region. 43 in frederick. west virginia, petersberg, coming in at 65 degrees. so we had the warm air around the region. but didn't make it all the way toward the north. right now, how about those numbers. how about still at 43 in frederick. yeah, move there. down toward fredericksburg. 56. look, 30 miles away. culpeper, coming in at 36 degrees. it is 34 in manassas.

dulles airport has the had a temperature rise of nearly 10 degrees over the last hour. all because of the wind. when we have seen the wind come. temperatures have been allowed to cool down. where we have seen a northwesterly wind we have seen the temperatures stay up. 52 in leesburg. at 11:00 at night. middle of january. huh, something is going on. that something is some milder air that continues to move in. the radar, nothing to show you as far as rain is concerned. once again we need to see some rain if we are going to stay on the dry side. we saw a little in the way of sprinkles earlier today. from the frontal boundary. not going to see much in the way of rain over a couple days. a chance friday. that's it. right now looking at a few cloud. that continue to move in. that frontal boundary that moved through. will continue to move on out into the atlantic. behind it. high pressure will move in. most of tom wiorrow will be sun. cool. mild for this time of year. temperatures, 50. wind shift out of the northeast.

then on friday. high pressure moves out. we will be fairly cool. a warm front moves our way. slight chance of a shower on friday. right before we see some amazingly warm weather come across the entire area. most of us will be in the low to mid 60s, coming up. this is why. huge dif in the jet strep in th. denver, high temperature, saturday. 18 degrees. 18 in denver, saturday. 63 in washington. very warm air. and i think it will be here the entire weekend into early next week. but not going to last. i think later in january. we are going to see cool stuff. it may happen late next week. temperatures only in the thi30sd 40s. cool, not cold. temperatures, 34-42. move through the day. high temperature of 50 degrees. 52 friday. with a 40% chance of showers. saturday at 63 degrees. 68 on sun diet. thi -- 68 on sunday.
