on the flu increase here in our area and how to protect yourself. breaking news on a school shooting in southern california. one 16-year-old student is in critical condition at this hour after allegedly being shot by a fellow classmate right in the middle of the classroom. this unfolded this morning at taft union high school in a roethlisberger to rural town -- they werible to talk that accused shooter down at which point officers took him into custody. police are just revealing that new information in a new conference a moment ago. >> you know, if it weren't for the teacher and the quick response, we don't know what might have happened. maybe as many as 20 rounds of shotgun in his pocket, and so we don't know what might have happened. this is a tragedy, but not as bad as we think it might have been. >> two other students are also

in the hospital this afternoon, one who is suffering hearing problems from a gunshot fired near her head. another who suffered injuries while trying to dive out of the way, the suspect is only identified right now as a 16-year-old student at this point. police say the suspect engaged in conversation with the victim, who was shot before opening fire. we'll bring you more information as it comes into our newsroom. vice president joe biden is meeting with groups that have a big stake in the renewed debate over guns, including the national rifle association. he says today tha consense is emerging on ways to curb gun violence, and he plans to give his recommendations to the white house by tuesday. steve handelsman joins us live from capitol hill with more on the panel discussions today. steve? >> recommendations that the nra is almost certain to oppose, maybe in their entirety. it's still a very powerful organization here on capitol hill. the question is, has it lost any

power or influence or maybe gained it in the way of the massacres in all erroro, at the school in connecticut and today's shotgun killing in california that left a student wounded. another s.w.a.t. team at a school, another shooting incident. the images hit the networks as vice president said he'll send to president obama on tuesday a proposal to change u.s. gun laws. >> diminish the probability that what we've seen will okur, and diminish the probability that our children are at risk in their schools. >> reporter: the nra is expected to recommend a -- and large-capacity clips, and setting up a stronger background check system. no exceptions for gun shows and the internet market, where 40%

of guns get sold in and out without any check to stop sales to criminals or the mentally ill. a mass shooting survivor said changing that is job one. >> not removing the second amendment from everybody. that's not what we're talking about. we're talking about making sure guns don't get in the wrong hands. how do we do that? that's a background check. >> reporter: in the wake of the movie massacre in aurora, colorado. >> if assault weapons and rifles were not allowed in this country, my son would still be alive. >> we have an obligation to prevent similar tragedies. >> gun rights advocates are pushing back. >> the best response is to have a good guy with a gun there at the scene, and to do that you need more people who are good guys with guns. >> reporter: that's what the powerful national rifle association says. and the nra is claiming a gain of 100,000 new members since the

school shooting in connecticut. i'm steve handlesman, news4, capitol hill. there's a developing story out of the montgomery county this hour, where police are searching for a missing man who is considered dangerous. 27-year-old clayton mullenhoff escaped last night. police say he suffered from paranoia and he's suicidal. they also report he has a history of violence, that he carries weapons and has extensive martial arts training. after a long search by law enforcement and canine units, investigators don't believe he's still in the area. chris gordon will have the latest on the effort to find him. there are new rules in the mortgage games. they were adopted today. sdipd to protect consumers from the type of risky mortgages that cricketed to the housing market collapse. until the new rules, fees and points will be limited, loans can't be longer than 30 years. for more borrowers, there will

welcome back to "news4 at 4." i'm pat lawsing muse. a 16-yard student is -- in critical condition after being shot by a fellow student. police say a teacher and another faculty member were able to start talking to the accused shooter who eventually put down his shotgun, at which point officers took him into custody. a man described by police as dangerous escaped the mental hospital. tonight investigators are still trying to find 27-year-old clayton muttonhoff, who disappeared last night. they don't believe he's still in the area, but they believe he

a judge in colorado plans to rule by tomorrow whether accused gunman james holmes will stand trial for that movie theater shooting. right now the judge is considering all of the evidence that prosecutors presented during a preliminary hearing this week. in a surprise move, the defense

did not call any witnesses, but lawyers have told the judge that holmes suffers from a mental ilniz. 12 people were killed in the attack last summer. dozens more were injured. more than three weeks after the tragedy at sandy hook, we're hearing from two of the parents who lost their son in that shooting. despite their unimaginable grief, it's put them on a new path to do good for others. david usualry has the story. >> every night i put them to bed, lay down, and we have some pillow talk. just he wanted to stay up. he didn't want to go to bed, like every kid. it was great. it was our special time together. >> reporter: a visit to chase's room certainly tugs at the heart, but also gives the family -- lie the first visit to the jersey shore. >> that bad came from one of
