cardinal drive. a vehicle fire. the good news is the police are on the scenement looks like the fire is out and smoldering. might take a while to get it out of the way. the good news is things are moving by pretty quickly. ten-minute ride on northbound 95 from the occoquan to the beltway. the trains are all on time. a traffic alert in fairfax county. westbound lanes of leesburg pike near the dulles toll road should be open again. they started construction on the pedestrian bridge which connects the spring hill metro station with businesses and homes on leesburg pike. work resumes next week. today, president obama and afghan president hamid karzai will meet for the first time since president obama was re-elected. the leaders will discuss what the u.s.'s role in afghanistan will be when the war ends there next year. karzai had dinner last night

with secretary of state hillary clinton. the meal came after the two had a private meeting. they also discussed the future afghanistan, including preparations for that country's elections next year. funerals are being held today for some of the victims of yesterday's bombings in pakistan. at least 120 people died in the blast. it was the deadliest day in that country in years. more than half of the victims died in attacks on a billiards hall in southwest pakistan. a sunni militant group with ties to the pakistani taliban is claiming responsibility for the bombings. new this morning, an apparent hostage situation inside a los angeles mall that's still going on. l.a. police say two armed men somehow got into a mall at lax about two hours after closing last night. they believe they may be holding a woman hostage inside a nordstrom rack store. overnight workers were evacuated there. the situation closed part of the 405 freeway for a time. it's reopened. during a week of talks aimed

at ending gun violence, gunfire rings out at another school. a student shot one classmate and tried to shoot another in taft, california. police say the boy had been targeted students who bullied him. a teacher prevented more bloodshed by talking the student into putting the gun down. the injured student is in critical but stable condition. >> today's gun control talks will focus on the video game industry. the entertainment software association which represents several major video game makers has confirmed it will attend. vice president joe biden wants to know if violent video games like call of duty: black ops ii played a role in mass shootings. various studies debunked the thee tla it leads to real life violence. task force is being slammed for what the nra is calling a "agenda to attack the second amendment." . biden spent most of their

meeting yesterday focusing on restrictions that would impact lawful gun owners. the vice president says those ideas include a universal background check and limiting the size of high capacity magazines. the nra says it will now work with congress to focus on what it calls better options. >> first, school security. that's essential to protecting our children. secondly, reform of the ways had which we deal with the mentally ill and including the violently or potentially violently mentally ill on the list of people not allowed to buy firearms. >> the nra is also pushing for a program to put armed guards in every school in the nation. biden says he will present his recommendations to president obama on tuesday. right now, police in two counties and the district are searching for a dangerous man who broke out of a locked hospital ward. 27-year-old clayton mollenhoff broke down a door to escape washington adventist hospital in at thtacoma park, maryland.

mollenhoff has a history of violence and suffers from paranoia. this is not the first time he's escaped. >> he has escaped in the past several times. he apparently has a lot of extensive training in martial arts. so keeping him restrained has been a bit of a challenge. >> police say if you see mollenhoff, stay away from him and call police as soon as possible. five minutes after the hour now. another twist in the chandra levy murder. new evidence could jeopardize the conviction of the man who killed her. evidence could taint the testimony of a key witness from the trial of ingmar guandique. he's convicted in 2010 of killing levy in 2001. her body was found a year later. prosecutors have presented the judge new evidence but that is about all we know at this point. today we'll learn more about a safety review of boeing's newest airplane. transportation secretary ray lahood will join the faa today as they address safety concerns about boeing's new 787. just this week, two dreamliners have run into safety issues at

welcome back at 5:09. a virginia goodwill store is getting ready to cash in. we checked a minute ago. bidding for this painting is now at $3800. the rare one of a kind piece of art has been bid on by eight people so far. it will be on the store's website for six more days. the painting is valued at $12,000. proceeds from the sale will go toward goodwill's job training. beautiful painting, too. >> it is. nice to know the money goes towards a good cause. that's nice. let's check our forecast this morning. we're dealing with a few clouds out there. a little chill as well. we can be happy about what's to come. >> tom kierein now here with the forecast. tom, good morning. >> good morning. it's calm and cold. over the last 12 hours, we've

domestic dispute. a neighbor captured the fire on video as firefighters arrived at the building in the soho neighborhood in new york. the man ho set the fire was trying to fight off firefighters from entering the building. one person was found dead inside. neighbors say they could hear screams for help coming from inside the building. >> screams for help. over and over again. >> do you know what floor he was on? >> i think the third floor. i was going to help him, but luckily i didn't because i would have been another casualty probably. >> it took about 200 firefighters to get the fire under control. police have a man in custody this morning. they say the person who died was not involved in the dispute with the suspect. 15 after the hour now. a judge says the man responsible for that deadly movie theater shooting in colorado last year can stand trial. arraignment is set for today for james holmes. that's after four days of graphic testimony of the night holmes allegedly shot and killed 12 people and injured more than 70 in a theater.

a judge ruled there is enough evidence to take this case to trial. holmes though may not be entering a plea today. his attorneys asked for today's arraignment to be delayed. new details are emerging about the prostitution scandal that tarnished the secret service. nbc news learned that two drug enforcement agents are implic e implicat implicated. they set up a meeting between a secret service agent and a prostitute in colombia. the justice department report says that the dea agents shouldn't face criminal charges. two dozen secret service employees and military service members have been implicated in that scandal. we're following a developing story now. the cdc will announce today that the flu continues to spread across the country. 41 states, including maryland and virginia, have reported widespread flu activity. lot of doctors' offices, pardon me sis and clinics are running t of flu shots. there are still shots out there, but it may take a little work it

find them. >> we're hearing that the vaccines out there, might take searching, particularly for infants, but we're encouraging families to do what they can to get it for their children. >> the archdiocese of washington asking anyone who feels sick to avoid shaking hands who taking communion. individual pastors will decide this weekend whether to suspend communion. we have a warning for women who take ambien to sleep. you may want to cut back on dosage. the fda is ordering the maker of the sleep aid to cut the dosages in half for women. their bodies process the drug more slowly than men. ambien can still cause drowsiness after a full night's sleep. that could leave drivers impaired and more accidents. they may recommend a different dosage for men. a scary ride in arizona for a man when his horse and buggy crashed into akah nall. fire officials say a car spooked the horse and when a wheel on the buggy clipped edge of the canal and they all went down.

it took 25 firefighters to pull the man, horse and buggy to safety. the man and the horse are both going to be fine. a south carolina teacher could lose his job for trying to make a point with his students. the high school english teacher stomped on the american flag in class in an effort to fuel discussion. attorneys for the man say he wanted to use a symbol with which the students were familiar. the school will decide whether to fire the teacher. for now eshs on paid leave. after almost 20 years, an indiana boy taken during a custody dispute has been found. 5-year-old richard landers jr. went missing in 1994. his paternal grandparents were charged. he's been now found in a small minnesota town living under a different name but with the same social security number. he's now maried and expects his first child. the family is trying to set up a reunion. families in louisiana are picking up the pieces after three tornadoes hit ground in the last 24 hours.

you're looking at video caught by a security camera in plaquemines parish, louisiana. the state has seen a series of strong thunderstorms this week, forcing governor bobby jindal to declare a state of emergency. flash flood warnings have been in effect for days there now. another storm system is expected there this weekend. efforts continue this morning after an avalanche leaves villagers stranded in turkey. dozens of people are trapped in their homes. people from surrounding towns are trying to dig out the village with one road in and out of town. rescuers have been able to dig out a few of the injured. but even ambulances were getting stuck in mountains of snow. the whales trapped under ice in canada are out of harm's way. at least for now. the ice that trapped them has shifted and the waters opened up around them a bit. scientists say shifting winds may be to thank for pushing that isiah way. the whales are not necessarily out of the woods just yet. that ice does continue to move. so those whales could get

trapped again. >> glad they're okay. hope that they're shifting with the ice or something. >> they have ice ships headed in that direction. hopefully they can cut a path for them. >> all right. it's now time to check the forecast. >> that's right. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is taking a look outside. tom? >> you notice how polite they were taking turns. that's great. we all immediate to take a lesson. >> i like that, tom. >> there's the jefferson memorial and the washington monument under a mostly cloudy sky on this friday morning. good morning, happy friday. right now, the cloud cover extends across most of virginia, maryland and into west virginia. and there are a few thin breaks in the cloud cover over northern virginia now, parts of maryland and we're cold under this cloud cover. temperatures are down near or below freezing. much of northern virginia and southern maryland as well as just to the north. montgomery county near freezing, so is prince george's county and arlington and fairfax. it's a bit milder, though, in the shenandoah valley and out in

the mountains. in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. some of that mild air coming in on a southerly and southwesterly breeze. they have a week disturbance passing over us later today. as it does, it will likely trigger needed rain. we have been abnormally dry the last few weeks. afternoon highs reaching the low 50s. after that rain ends by early this evening, we'll have patchy dense fog forming. that will be late tonight and perhaps into early saturday morning. then some sun back on saturday afternoon and a touch of april in january over the weekend. it's going to be into the low and mid 60s tomorrow afternoon the way it's looking now. maybe even soaring to near 70 on sunday afternoon. a lot of cloudiness, though, on sunday. but a dream i, mild day. back to work and school on monday. 50s in the morning, afternoon highs near 60. more rain likely moving in. turning much chillier, though, on tuesday. still lingering rain showers coming through. highs only in the 40s.

>> days of our lives is marking a huge milestone today. the soap opera will air its 12,000th episode. nbc announced it will extend the soap opera for an additional year. get this. this is "days of our lives" 47th year on the air. they received 215 daytime emmy nominations and 32 wins. you can watch it every weekday right here on nbc4 at 1:00 in the afternoon. despite -- despite a surprise oscar snub, ben affleck has a lot to celebrate this morning. his film was named best picture and he won best director at the critics choice awards last night. argo was nominated for seven oscars yesterday, including best picture. affleck was left out of the best director category. he accepted the critics choice award and he jokes that he "would like to thank the academy." >> you really believe this

story, osama bin laden? >> yeah. >> the story of the greatest man hunts in history finally hit theaters today. zero dark thirty, the story behind the search for osama bin laden moves to a wide release the day after being nominated for five academy awards, including one for best picture. some are criticizing the movie for its portrayal of torture used during the hunt. this weekend, the worlds of television and film come together for the 70th annual golden globe awards. this year will be different than years past. for the past three years, ricky gervais hosted the show. this year a comedic duo taking the stage. tina fey and amy poehler. >> a very kind of sloppy loud party. that seemed like our kind of thing. >> beautiful people of film rub shoulders discussing people of television. that's always nice to see. >> the duo will not only host the show but both are nominated for best actress in a tv comedy or musical. front and center will be films

for us. he has your forecast. good morning. >> that's a view of national harbor on this friday morning. starting off with a lot of cloudiness. it's producing a few sprinkles. may be trying to reach the ground north of richmond. but it's southwest of the metro area. ahead of that, breaks in the clouds. but the real rain activity this morning right now is this southwestern west virginia. southwestern virginia into the carolinas and much farther west they're getting heavier downpours in indiana and parts of ohio. ahead of that, it's a cold morning. most of the region near or below freezing in the suburbs or rural areas. 39 at reagan national. milder air pushing in. it's going to be pushing in by later this afternoon. prince george's county -- farther west, arlington, fairfax, as well as prince william and fauquier, culpeper, loudoun, all near freezing. north and west of washington,

with better thinking than the nra. the nra said they were disappointed with the white house meeting, that the white house seemed less focused on keeping kids safe and more focus on attacking the second amendment. this was a first for the nra to be invited into a meeting like this. we found afterwards from talking to various ones in these meetings with vice president joe biden's task force that gun rights groups had different inions on the tone of the meeting. >> now, moving ahead, looking at today, they'll be talking with gamers after having had a similar conversation with the entertainment industry. the entertainment industry saying they were glad to be invited to the table and one thing vice president joe biden brought up is that of all the groups they talked to so far, the one thing that he seems to see consensus on is a lot of people want to see more

regulation when it comes to buying guns, gun purchases and having universal background checks even for gun shows and private sales. eun? >> tracie potts live on capitol hill for us this morning. tracie, thank you. the pentagon is preparing for billions of dollars in cuts. defense secretary leon panetta asking his department to brace for the cuts if congress fails to reach an agreement on a final spending plan. the d.o.d. will start freezing civilian hiring as well. it plans to delay a warning -- holding off on some maintenance as well. the pentagon facing nearly a half trillion dollars in cuts over a decade. some of virginia's top lawmakers are making a strong push to bring the fbi headquarters to the commonwealth. mark warner and tim kaine and members of area board of supervisors gathered in arlington yesterday. they stopped short of endorsing a specific location but say a metro accessible warehouse owned by government in springfield is

ideal. prince george's county is pushing to bring the site to maryland. new evidence could jeopardize the conviction of the man who killed chandra levy. it could taint the -- he was convicted in 2010 of killing the 24-year-old in 2001. chandra levy's body was found a year later. that's about all we know at this point. there have reportedly been two secret meetings between the judge and prosecutors which is very rare according to some defense attorneys. >> the secrecy it's reported as a result of a judge not wanting there to be public disclosure and apparently to protect witnesses. i get that. but it's exceedingly rare. i've never seen it. >> this new evidence could lead to a new trial for guandique who was in jail when he was charged with levy's murder. it's not clear whether the evidence has to do with a fellow inmate who testified that guandique admitted to killing

levy. that testimony was crucial to the prosecution's case. president obama's second inauguration is still more than a week away. but you don't have to wait until en to get collectibles for the big event. the inaugural committee hosts the grand opening of the merchandise store later today. it opens at noon today at 1155 f street northwest, a few blocks from the white house. it includes clothing, artwork, pins, buttons and a special edition poster. the inaugural committee has to find somebody else to do the benediction. the evangelical pastor has withdrawn from the event after criticism for an anti-gay sermon he made 15 years ago. in a recording of that sermon, the pastor can be heard pushing for therapy that he says can turn gay people straight. the inaugural committee says it didn't know about that sermon and chose the pastor for his work to end human trafficking. inauguration night will be a busy one here in washington. about 40,000 are expected to

older. that's what i think i saw. first look. i don't know. i'll look at it again. >> thank you, melissa. >> look at those eyes. she looks a little older. >> if you say so. 5:45. fairfax county may be looking to hire nearly 300 new teachers and administrators. school superintendent unveiled his budget for the coming year. $2.5 billion plan reveals -- to deal with an expected jump in enrollment. the system is expecting about 2900 new students next year. he's asking the county for a 5.5% increase in funding for the coming year. he doesn't expect to receive all of the money he's requesting based on economy. the sentencing could be put on hold for the former marine convicted of shooting at the pentagon and other military targets. he's supposed to be sentenced today. a plea deal requires he serve 25 years in prison. his lawyers want a judge to review the deal because doctors recently diagnosed their client as schizophrenic.

we're about 11 days into the new year, we are 11 days into the new year and unfortunately a first for the district. city police are investigating the first homicide of the new year. police tell us the man was stabbed in the 2800 block of alabama avenue southeast. this happened around 3:30 in the afternoon. the victim was taken to the hospital where he later died. police are still looking for suspects. four people are recovering in the hospital after being hit by a car in maryland. it happened in glenburnie in the middle of the evening rush. the driver stayed and waited for paramedics to arrive. two of the victims' injuries are described as life-threatening. police have not released any names or information on charges. the work is just getting started for rg3 to get back into shape. the surgeon who performed griffin's first acl surgery in 2009 is giving his prediction for the quarterback's return. dr. adickes is a former redskins offensive lineman and is close to the griffin family.

he spoke to news 4 about when he thinks rg3 will get back on the field. >> with the revision surgery, i would expect him to recover in 6 to 8 months. i honestly think, knowing his work ethic and the kind of athlete is and thethat he's in, see him back for the opener. >> dr. adickes says the only downside to the surgery is that bone and tendon grafts had to be taken from his good knee to repair the damaged one. a son of junior seau is speaking out. tyler seau is angry that he didn't have the awareness to help his father more and now it's too late. the national institutes of health released a study that showed seau suffered from a disease known as cte. it's associated with repeated blows to head. seau shot and killed himself last may. he was one of three players found to have cte.

voting to approve a new collective bargaining agreement. it's electronic and will continue until saturday at 8:00 a.m. if a majority of the 700 players eligible to vote also approve the agreement, training camp will start this sunday with a shortened 48-game season set to start on the 19th. today transit agencies around the country, including metro, will receive funding to train the next generation for transportation jobs. transportation secretary ray lahood will make the announcement this morning at booker t washington charter school in washington. it aims to give student at technical schools employment opportunities after they graduate. your metro ride will be slower on three lines this weekend. buses will replace trains between the pentagon and rosalyn stations. the arlington station is closed. single tracking between friendship heights and van ness. trains will share tracks between

green belt and college park. work starts at 10:00 tonight and should be done by monday morning rush. coming up on 5:50. relatives of people killed in a plane crash with mexican-american singer jen i rivera are suing her company. they say she was negligent when she hired a faulty lear jet. the lawsuit says jenny rivera enterprises should have known the plane was not safe to fly. it also claims the pilots did not have enough training to safely fly that plane. right now, firefighters are trying to stop raging wildfires from destroying more homes in new he zealand. the smoke and flames forced several to evacuate homes. a wildfire charred some 370 acres of land in christ church. luckily, no one has been hurt. it killed 185 people back in 2011. just about 5:51 on this friday morning. another chilly start to the day.

american airlines came in last with 77% of flights coming in on time. instead of asking got milk, maybe it should be got wine? milk consumption is down 6% in the last decade. on the other hand, 21% more people are drinking wine. fewer people are drinking juice. that's down 18%. not surprising. bottled water drinking is up 56% in the last decade. perhaps eyes really are the window to the soul. new study says that people with brown eyes are perceived to be more trustworthy than people with blue eyes. researchers in the czech republic say it isn't the eye color that people respond to, it's the shape of a person's face with those eye colors. they say people with brown eyes were deemed more trustworthy in pictures. but when they reversed people's eye color in those pictures, the same people now with blue eyes were found to be more
