there will be no class this morning at a rural california high school where a student opened fire on classmates. the 16-year-old boy shot one classmate with a shotgun and ride to shoot another but missed. this happened in taft, california. police say the boy had been planning the attack and targeted students who had bullied him. if a teacher had not been able to convince the student to put down the gun, police say the situation could have been worse. >> you know, if it weren't for this teacher and a quick response, we don't know what might have happened. had as many as 12 rounds in his pocket. we don't know what might have happened and this is a tragedy but not as bad as we think it might have been. >> the injured student is in critical, but stable condition. also in california, developing story this morning. police and swat teams swarm a los angeles mall overnight because of a break-in and possible standoff situation. l.a. police say two armed men got into the mall near lax about two hours after closing last

night. they believe they may be holding a woman hostage inside a nordstrom rack store. it closed traffic for a while but since reopened. the president will sit down with afghan president karzai. they will discuss what the u.s.'s role will be when the war ends there. >> president karzai had dinner with secretary of state hillary clinton last night. this was after a meeting between he and hillary clinton. the pentagon bracing for another budget battle on capitol hill. it's taking steps to prepare the deal with billions of dollars in cuts. defense secretary leon panetta asking his department to brace for those cuts if congress fails to reach an agreement on a final spending plan. the defense department will start freezing civilian hiring. it also plans to delay awarding some contracts and to hold off

on some maintenance as well. the pentagon is facing nearly a half trillion dollars in cuts over a decade. >> 6:03 now. a sudden change to inauguration plans. the evangelical pastor who was supposed to give the benediction at the swearing in is out because of anti-gay comments made years ago. he has withdrawn from the event after getting criticism for a sermon in which he pushed for therapy that could turn gay people straight. they picked him for his work in human trafficking. the second inauguration is a little more than a week away. an estimated 40,000 people will pack two inaugural balls on the evening of the inauguration. meantime, you don't have to wait to get the collectibles. the official inauguration store opens today at noon at f and 11th streets northwest and

parade marchers will hold a practice parade this sunday. one of the heads of national institutes of health says we're in the middle of a flu epidemic. 41 states including maryland and virginia reported widespread activity. doctors, pharmacies, clinics, they're running out of flu shots. doctors at the children's national medical center say there are still shots out there. might take work to find them, though. >> we're hearing that the vaccines out there might take a little bit of searching for infants but we're encourage canning families to do what they can to get it for their children. >> the cdc will provide an update on the spread of the flu later today. right now, a multicounty hunt for a dangerous man who broke out of a locked hospital ward. 27-year-old clayton mollenhoff broke down a door to escape washington adventist hospital in maryland last night. d.c., montgomery and prince george's county police are all on the lookout. he has a history of violence and suffers from paranoia.

this weekend will be one year since the largest cruise ship disaster in history. the costa concordia off the coast. the ship is still there and hasn't moved in a year. michelle kosinski is there and has more on how it's being remembered. michelle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. sunday will be one year since the costa concordia disaster. people have been arriving on the

island for the memorial. you know, it always amazes people to see it, that it is yes, still here in that same position. ha has changed is you can see the enormous structures, the salvage crews have built around it. they have been working 24 hours a day, seven days a week preparing to finally roll it upright and then float it out of here, probably not until the fall. we talked to the survivors today and for them, the emotional side of this is just as present, just as large. there are a lot of terrifying memories there. still anger toward the company that this happened at all and they say for the way they were treated immediately after the wreck. on sunday a service will be held for the 32 people who did not make it off that ship safely. among them an american couple, a little girl, a couple on their honeymoon. part of the service, there will be a moment of silence, a mass and crews will take the boulder that the ship struck causing that enormous gash and put it

welcome back at 6:15. a manhattan apartment building goes up in flames after a domestic dispute killing one person. people say they could hear screaming from the building in the soho neighborhood. police arrested a 45-year-old resident. witnesses say he set fire to a hallway after a fight with the mother of his child. they got out safely but one did not. one was taken to the hospital because he allegedly tried to fight with first responders as they arrived on the scene. a police officer is being treated for a broken hand. an arraignment set for today for the man accused of killing

12 people inside a colorado movie theater. a judge ruled that james holmes can stand trial for last summer's mass shooting saying prosecutors have established probable cause on more than 160 felony counts. this comes after four days of graphic testimony about the shooting. holmes' attorneys asked for today's arraignment to be delayed. new details emerging about the prostitution scandal that tarnished the secret service. two drug enforcement agents are implicated here. the justice department says the dea agents set up a meeting between an agent and prostitute in colombia. the agents were there ahead of president obama's visit last april. the justice department report says the dea agents shouldn't face criminal charges. two dozen secret service employees and military service members have been implicated in the scandal. some american parents will be able to complete their adoptions of russian children. only the adoptions already

approved by a court will be allowed to go through. a court order often comes late in the process which means many families will likely lose their chances to bring a russian child home. they banned adoptions to the u.s. in retaliation for american sanctions for human rights abuses. 6:17 now. a cold case is solved after an indiana boy is found almost 20 years after he disappeared. 5-year-old richard landers was taken during a custody battle between his parent and paternal grandparent. charges against the grandparents were dismissed after the case went cold. it turns out he was living under a different name but the same social security number in a small minnesota town. he is now married and expecting his first child. the family is trying to set up a reunion. no word on whether the grandparents will face new charges. promising news in the effort to save about a dozen whales trapped under ice in canada. it now appears the whales are freed. the ice that trapped them has shifted and the waters have opened up around them.

scientists say shifting wind may be to thank for pushing the isiah way. the whales aren't necessarily out of the woods yet. the ice continues to move so they could become trapped elsewhere. a warning now. if you took ambien to help you sleep last night, you might want to wait a while before getting behind the wheel today. the fda says it received more than 700 reports of accidents caused by drivers still drowsy because they took a sleep aid. the problem is so serious, the agency is ordering the maker of ambien to cut the recommended dosage in half for women. that's because women process the drug much slower than men. >> i remember getting on the highway and then i have no memory -- >> i've seen everything from them nodding off while talking to me to them talking like in tongues. >> the maker of ambien said the sleep aid should not be taken unless the person can get the recommended 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

6:25 now. we're preparing for a spring flashback. other parts of the country dealing with a crippling winter storm. weather channel meteorologist paul goodloe live in park city, utah. paul, how are things there? >> things here are really cold. in fact, yesterday temperatures were in the low, mid-30s. today they're around the mid teens right now. this is one. calling cards of the latest winter storm to come through the area. behind me, see some of what utah is trademarked for. a fine white powdery snow. 45 minutes way, hour and a half with the snow, they picked up about 7 inches of snow. still seeing snow there. we have snow showers here. the mountains, legendary skiing and snowboarding, picked up twice that much. waiting to hear the official word. still early. about 4:25 in the morning out

the duchess gave to him before starting the painting. good morning, welcome back to "news4 today." i'm aaron gilchrist. i'm eun yang. right now a chill in the air but it doesn't feel like a january morning. warmer weather is on the way as well. >> of course, rain is on the way. meteorologist tom kierein on the torm steam 4 weather deck to tell us about it. >> the first faint light of dawn there from the city camera. you can see venus a little bit above the clouds. we have a few breaks in the clouds. a few stars trying to shine through. we have a calm wind now as well. as we take a look at what has been happening over the last 12 hou hours, we've had quite a bit of cloudiness. a look at that on the left. all the areas in yellow, green, orange, that's all rain. that's advancing east. where it's raining, it's mild in the 50s. some of the warm air will be arriving here over the weekend. closer to washington, though, it is at or a little below freezing.

direction there. eun? 6:32 now. as police searched for vanessa familiar's killer, giulio blanco garcia said he monitored the probe by using the internet and tracking information by the media. the warrant says where blanco garcia got the murder weapon. one he took from franklin american mortgage after the killing. she was found stabbed to death in fairfax that june. new evidence could o -- could taint the testimony of a key witness from the trial of ingmar guandique. he was convicted in 2010 of killing the 24-year-old in 2001. levy's body was found a year later. prosecutors have presented the judge new evidence but that's about all we know at this point. there have been reportedly two secret meetings between the judge and prosecutors which is very rare according to some

defense attorneys. >> the secrecy it's reported as a result of a judge not wanting there to be public di disclosure and to protect witnesses. i get that. but it's exceedingly rare. i've never seen it. >> the attorney says this new evidence could lead to a new trial for guandique who was already in jail when he was charged with levy's murder. it isn't clear whether the evidence has to do with a fellow inmate that testified that guandique admitted to killing levy. that testimony was crucial to the prosecution's case. in maryland, four people are waking up in the hospital after being hit by a car. the crash happened in glenburnie in the middle of the evening rush. two are teens and the other adults. the driver waited for paramedics to arrive. two of the victims' injuries are described as life-threatening. there are no names release and no information has been released whether charges will be filed. funerals rb being held for victims of yesterday's bombings in pakistan. at least 120 people died in the

blasts. it was the deadliest day in that country in years. more than half the victims died in attacks on a billiards hall on southwestern pakistan. a sunni militant group with ties to the pakistani taliban claiming responsibility for the bombings. today we'll learn much more about recent safety problems involving boeing's newest 787 dreamliner. transportation secretary ray lahood and the faa will announce a safety review of the plane. just this week, an electrical fire broke out on one of the planes owned by japan airlines as it arrived in boston. then a fuel leak grounded another plane operated by j.a.l. the same planes fly in and out of dulles every day. fairfax teachers may soon get a raise. school superintendent jack dale unveiled the budget. the plan includes a modest 1% raise for teachers. $63 million would go toward hiring nearly 300 teachers and administrators to deal with an expected jump in enrollment.

the school system is expected 2900 new students. dale is asking the county for a 5.5% increase in funding for the coming year. he doesn't expect to receive all money requested based on the economy. 6:35 now. your metro ride will be a little slower on three lines this weekend. the station along the blue line will be closed for track work. planning to do repairs along the red and green lines. that start at 10:00 and should be done by the monday morning rush hour. >> this is one of the biggest weekends of the year for beauty pageant contestants. miss america will be crowned tomorrow night in las vegas. she will be in for some trying weeks in the months once the weekend is over. she's undergoing a double mastectomy to prevent her chances of developing breast cancer. the disease has already killed her mother, grandmother and great aunt. doctors say it is rare for someone in her 20s to undergo the drastic procedure.

half trillion dollars in cuts over a decade. 6:46 right now. today for the first time, the fallout from that fiscal cliff deal will start to show up in your paychecks. cnbc's courtney reagan live with that story. courtney, good morning. >> good morning to you. that's right. we're all probably going to feel it today. it's payday for many americans. but not as much money heading into our pockets as last pay period. this is the first round of paychecks under the american taxpayer relief act. under the fiscal cliff deal reached by congress, the tax holiday which is a source of reduction wasn't extended. social security taxes will now be 6.2% up from 4.2%. it's estimated to affect 77% of the workforce. got milk? it seems fewer americans do these days. according to market watch, milk consumption is down 6% in the past decade. 18% fewer people drinking juice. what's quenching americans'

thirst. more people are drinking bottled war than before. the other winner, wine. the adult grape juice, 21% jump in consumption since 2001. back to you. >> all right. courtney reagan at cnbc. thank you. >> hanks. the cdc will announce today that the flu continues to spread across the country. 41 states including maryland and virginia reported widespread flu activity. many doctors offices, pardon me sis and clinics are running out of flu shots. there are still shot out there but it may take work to find them. >> we're hearing that the vaccines out there might take a little bit of searching, particularly for infants. we're urging families o do ha they can to get it for their children. >> the archdiocese of washington is asking anyone who feels sick to avoid shaking hands or taking communion. individual pastors will decide this weekend whether to suspend communion. it has been months since the massive 911 outage hit the

washington area and six other states. federal regulators say they're still not confident that the phone company, verizon, has done everything it can do to make sure the issue never happens again. >> a report in the washington post says verizon lied about passing a generator inspection. the fcc hopes to strengthen 911 systems nationwide. millions of people were affected back in june, most in northern virginia. a hearing has been scheduled to look into the sinking of the hms bounty. that ship sank during hurricane sandy. one person was killed on the ship and the captain went missing and is presumed dead. the coast guard says the hearing will begin early next month in portsmouth, virginia. earlier, we mentioned how miss america will be crowned in las vegas. we mentioned how allen rose will help the district of columbia in the pageant. we aired the wrong video. >> here is the correct video. rose is making headlines.

so here's how we're looking for today. here's our temperature graph. we'll have it gradually warming to near 50. low 50s early afternoon. we'll have that rain moving in after that into the metro area. that ending by early this evening. then that fog around late tonight into saturday morning. here's the four-day forecast. a little sun back tomorrow afternoon. but into the mid 60s. it will feel like april in january. near 70 on sunday. and then here we go. back down again, temperatures all the way down into the 40s again after chilly rain on monday and tuesday, wednesday, thursday, back down to the 40s to near 50 for highs. colder the following weekend is the way it looks right now. mike cremedas, how is traffic? >> we had the right lane shut down on georgia avenue. still have a five-mile backup. about a 21-minute ride from 95 to 270, under 30 miles an hour. the left lane is still shut down at collington.
