fashions. it's cold here, matt. i think maybe turtleneck sweater gowns could be all the rage on sunday. >> we look forward to it. important information for the millions of americans who take popular sleep medications, including ambien. why doctors are now telling women, in particular, to cut their doses in half. we'll explain that, savannah. all right. and then a family in ohio, dealing with a rather bizarre problem. take a look at what happens when fire gets near the faucet. the water literally explodes into flames. and, as it turns out, this is not an isolated problem. we'll tell you what's behind it. but we will begin this morning with the winter storm taking aim at people here on the west coast to the great lakes. al has the forecast details. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. we've got a big storm system. let's go to the video, show you what people have been dealing with out west from utah on into parts of nevada. anywhere from 6 to 12" of snow. travel has been hazardous, at best. and it's just going to get worse. we've added to that a lot of

strong wind activity. let's look at the radar. right now it doesn't look that impressive. it doesn't get through the mountains there. but if you get underneath this, we are seeing snowfall rates of about six inches or so coming up in the next, i would say, six hours. ice storm warnings. we've got winter storm warnings and watches and snow advisories from oregon all the way to minnesota and parts of wisconsin. here is the storm, getting itself together, making its way to the north and bringing -- dragging behind it very cold air, gusty winds and a lot of snow. snowfall amounts, here is what we look for in the next 48 to 24 hours. heaviest snow stretching from the dakotas all the way on up into northern minnesota, from six to nine inches to up to a foot of snow from rapid city all the way to grand forks. and as that system moves to the east, cold air is going to move in to the eastern part of the u.s. as well. matt? >> al, get down here, we'll

check your local forecast in a couple of minutes. meanwhile, vice president biden is holding more talks today as he wraps up his task force to curb gun violence. his meeting with the national rifle association on thursday is getting a lot of attention this morning. we'll talk to that group's president in a couple of minutes. first, nbc's white house correspondent kristin welker has the latest. >> reporter: vice president biden will meet with representatives of the video game industry later on today. a source close to the talk says the vice president believes there is strong support for stiffer gun legislation but a meeting here at the white house thursday with the nation's most powerful gun lobby underscored the deep divisions that remain. as vice president biden prepares to unveil his gun safety recommendations next week, today he wraps up a series of meetings, which thursday included clash with the national rifle association at the white house. >> it was two sides stating their positions and then

leaving. >> reporter: white house officials would not comment on the meeting, part of biden's gun safety task force. the president of the nra is speaking out, accusing the obama administration of attacking the second amendment. >> they made it very clear that the president's position on firearms and the so-called assault weapons ban and the like had been the same position that he has taken for many years and that they're going to stick with that. >> reporter: sharp words came after the vice president earlier in the day previewed his upcoming report. >> there's an emerging set of recommendations. i'm going to focus on the ones that relate primarily to gun ownership, what type of weapons can be owned. and one is there is a surprising -- so far, a surprising recurrence of suggestions that we have universal background checks. >> reporter: meanwhile the president is coming under scrutiny this week after naming jack lew as treasury secretary,

the fourth white male mr. obama has chosen in the last month to fill top cabinet positions. this photo, surrounded by all male advisers, though top aide valerie jarrett is hidden behind one of the men. e.p.a. administrator lisa jackson is quitting and so is labor secretary hilda solis. perhaps the most high-profile woman in the cabinet, secretary of state hillary clinton is also on her way out. >> the white house is probably going to be careful with the next announcement to have some women, maybe some minorities to be part of it, to offset this self-inflicted error. >> now white house officials are pushing back against that criticism, noting that there are many women in subcabinet level positions. as for the vice president, he says he will issue his recommendations to the president next tuesday. matt? >> kristin welker at the white

house this morning. as always, thank you. the president of the national rifle association joins us live. mr. keane, thank you for your time. appreciate it. >> my pleasure. >> is this the immoveable object when it comes to the nra and the administration over this? is there simply no area for compromise? if not where does it leave the american people? >> i think, matt, what we've got is our very different views about what needs to be done to prevent the kind of tragedy that took place in newtown. we focused on school security. we're very concerned about the mental health system in this country. we think those who have been adjudicated to be potentially violently mentally ill should be on the databases that are checked when they try to buy firearms. the vice president and his folks are focusing primarily on firearms ownership and what we consider second amendment rights of the american people. >> why shouldn't the american

people ask both sides to compromise? you want security in the schools, you want gaming industry to come down. you want to deal with the mentally ill. if we say yes to that or the president says yes to that, why doesn't he have a right to say to you give a little on things like background checks? >> you know, if you're looking at the problem, which is to prevent this sort of thing, what you want to do is do those things that will actually make a difference. we have a profound disagreement with this administration, first of all, on what would make a difference. we don't think that a ban on so-called assault weapons, which hasn't worked in the past, is going to work this time. we think many of those proposals are basically feel-good proposals and what we really need to do is get to the question of why this is happening and what can be done about it. i don't think there's any lack of concern about dealing with the problem. i think there's a very different view as to what the problem is and how to solve it. >> the president says he wants no single piece of legislation,

he wants a broad approach. are you willing to go out on a limb and predict there -- do you have the support in congress to block any federal ban on assault weapons in the coming year? >> i do not think that there is going to be a ban on so-called assault weapons passed by the congress. >> how close do you think congress can get on that? people talk about the power of the nra. they look at it almost in monumental terms. do you think in the wake of these shootings that power has been eroded at all, mr. keene? >> i don't know that the nra is that powerful. i do think that those americans who believe strongly in the second amendment and their right to own privately and use firearms for legitimate purposes is a huge number of people who really care about these issues. we try to provide leadership to those folks. we try to represent them before the congress and elsewhere. but it's not the power of the nra, matt. what it is is the strength of

belief among many americans in the constitution to have the right to own firearms. >> this will be a debate that will continue to grow intense in the next coming months and years. i hope you will continue to be part of it. thank you. lower the dosage of drugs for women after study show these drugs do not leave your system as quickly as thought for women. tom costello is here with more details. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. women will take 13 million more sleeping pills than six years ago. the fda says they do such a good job, some people are too drowsiy to drive the next morning. those ambien commercials promise a good sleep. >> it's the only sleep aid with two layers to help treat both types of sleep problems. >> reporter: but for some it may be too good. after getting reports of

hundreds of driving-related incidents and accidents involving sleeping aids like ambien, the fda has ordered the makers of ambien and other medication that contain the drug to cut the dose in half for women from 10 to 5 milligrams and cut the extended release formulas. the problem, the drug can remain in the blood stream longer than previously thought, especially in women, making many people too drowsiy to concentrate or drive the next morning. bobby kennedy's daughter, kerry, says she took ambien by mistake and then side swiped a truck. >> i remember getting on the highway and then i have no memory. >> reporter: dr. daniel eis eisenberg. women have this problem more than men? >> it appears they have the drug in their systems longer because they're smaller and the metaboli metabolism, breakdown of the

drug is slower then. >> it's just as bad as drinking and driving. >> reporter: some of the best research is done at the sleep disorder center in cleveland where wkyc reporter monica robins took ambien and over several hours tried driving in a simulator. >> one hour after taking the ambien, i'm clearly disoriented. >> reporter: after three hours, she crashed. >> i don't remember seeing a speed limit. this is a very serious crash. you went into the concrete barrier. >> reporter: the label warns users not to take ambien unless they can sleep a full night. the maker of ambien, sanofi, says these medicines should knob used if individuals are unable to get the recommended seven to eight hours to sleep. but experts say for some people seven to eight hours may not be enough. everyone metropolitan abseaboli drugs differently but many women still have that drug in their

thursday during those oscar nominations when 9-year-old quvenzhane wallis earned best actress nomination for her role in "beefs of the southern wild"? she is the youngest actress to ever be nominated. the duchess of cambridge, her first portrait unveiled. a complete wrap-up of the golden globes. we also have a rare interview with justice sonia sotomayor. she is the first latino woman to serve on the supreme court. tap water setting fire. jeff rossen has the story. >> can you imagine turning on

your faucet in the bathroom and the water suddenly ignites, creating a fireball right in your house? it can happen thanks to a chemical in some drinking water. one family outside cleveland is living this nightmare right now. it's a starting sight. yes, that's tap water, catching fire. jason and debbie klein couldn't believe their eyes. fearing for their young children. >> i was so scared. it just was a huge explosion. the entire sink, up to the ceiling. >> reporter: it started just weeks ago, when they noticed their water was fizzing. then when debbie lit a candle near the sink, the water lit up. >> we're putting our kids in the bathtub every night of this explodable water. >> turns out there's highly flammable methane gas in their well water. it's invisible and naturally occurring in the ground. it can seep into wells.

that seepage even worse if the ground is disturbed. anything from earthquakes to drilling. and near the klein's house, it just so happens a natural gas company was drilling. before they started, the company paid to test the family's water. methane levels were nine, just within safe limits. but months into the drilling, tests show the methane levels had sky rocketed, reaching 22, more than twice the acceptable level. >> this family in ohio is not alone. there have been methane found in drinking water across the country. >> there's even a film about the issue, anti-drilling documentary "gas land." >> whoa! >> critics of drilling say laws need to be tougher to protect homeowners. >> oil and gas companies have been granted special exemptions from some of our most important environmental laws and we need really tough enforcement, which we don't have now.

>> reporter: for the klein family in ohio, the cause of their flaming water is still unclear. the gas company told nbc news they support the state investigation. and there are many natural variables that can cause the levels of methane to change. but in the meantime, the kleins say buying a methane filtering system would cost $8,000, money they don't have. forced to drink bottled water instead. and they're still bathing, ewing the tap. >> we don't know the consequences of sitting in gas water. we just don't have a choice. >> overnight a gas industry group told nbc news when current laws are followed, drilling is safe. officials in ohio say they are taking this case very seriously and investigate all claims. and now washington is paying attention, too. congress has asked the epa to study the potential affects of drilling on drinking water.

to encourage women to more closely monitor how much they're drinking. the cdc indicates almost 14 million u.s. women or one out of eight are binge drinking three times a month, consuming an average of six alcoholic beverages at a time. >> the problem with binge drinking, it seems harmless. it's something we deal with all the time, a glass of wine or three or four. binge drinking leads to problems with your body and your brain and really self harming behaviors that can lead to addictive behavior. >> reporter: the drinking mirror can be a valuable tool, these women, enjoying an adult beverage in ft. lauderdale weren't sold on it. >> i don't take it seriously. it doesn't take so many things into affect. your genes, other things that you do in life. how much you work out, how much you don't work out. >> reporter: the potential medical effects of alcohol use, such as diabetes, liver and heart disease.

the p-51 mustang, critical to american success in the closing days of the war. this one happens to have a red tail. the the muskeghee airmen flew that. this is a great tribute to all those who were in the war. i can't tell you what it's like to be in that submarine and see it on an actual mission and then see what happened to it. >> the primary goal and focus of the museum is education. do you get a sense that there is a great thirst for knowledge about the second world war among the younger people who visit that museum? >> reporter: i do, matt. my own personal experience is that the baby boomers who came along after the war, it was not part of their memory. but all the books that have been written about that time and they realize what their parents went

we're back at 8:39. this morning on new year new you, we're looking at inspiring weight loss stories. a group of students who, through their school lost more than 750 pounds. kerry sanders has their story. good morning, kerry. >> reporter: good morning, willie. in classrooms like this across america, kids learn reading, writing, arithmetic. but rarely do they learn, eat this, not that. but one school district decided that could change. >> the heaviest i've been, i heard somebody say you can't sit there. you're too big for that seat. that was hurtful. i went home that night and

cried. >> my heaviest was 830 pounds. if you're big, uh-uh usually get teased. oh, you're a fatty. it really brings you down. >> i was 275. i wouldn't want to look in the mirror. i hid it from my mom because, you know, i wanted her to be happy. and i wanted to be happy. but it was hard to make friends. >> 257. i would be like 500, 700 pounds or something like that. >> reporter: last september, chelsea, jason, sarah and cameron, along with eight other students from independence, missouri, left their family and headed to mindstream academy, a boarding program in bluffton, south carolina, on a mission to lose weight. the trip paid for by their own school district. >> we as a school district can take advantage of an opportunity for students and their families

to change the course of their life, that's what we're going to do. >> reporter: mindstream academy and parents helped foot the bill. and for the next three months, they exercised, were counseled and learned about healthy eating. in december, they returned to missouri after losing a combined 756 pounds. an emotional homecoming. >> he has changed so much. he is so skinny. >> reporter: not only did they lose weight, but they gained confidence. >> the before picture and you see the girls, the hair was all up in ponytails, baggy clothes. and after picture, it was, look at me now. i got makeup on, hair down, hand on the hip, pride. >> that pride shared by all. >> i lost 100 pounds. my self esteem was just through the roof. >> i'm very proud of you, jason. i think it's an amazing thing. >> i lost 55 pounds.

i'm smiling a lot more. i think i just have more optimism. >> extremely proud. i mean, she's always made me proud, but i'm just even prouder. >> no one recognizes me. i grew four inches and i lost 65 pounds. >> i think as parents of these children from mind stream, that we just feel really blessed. >> when i got down to about 250 pound pounds i said, wow! she still tells me every day she's happy i'm home. >> one of the things i told her, i said, i have always told you that you're beautiful. i hope you see it now. >> i do. >> the independence, missouri, district, is going to be sending sarah, jason, cameron and chelsea back to the landmark academy next week to continue their weight loss program and increasingly across america schools are beginning to

back now at 8:45 with a woman living with aids who became the face of the disease by challenging people to erase the stigma associated with it. jenna bush hager is here with the story. good morning. >> good morning. mary fisher took america by storm in 1992, faced a fearful nation with a message of compassion. >> i want your attention, not your applause. i would never have asked to be hiv positive.

>> mary fisher's historic speech at the 1992 republican national convention is known as one of the greatest speeches of the 20th century. it's called "a whisper of aids" yet her words were anything but quiet. her speech resonated with a nation still learning about the death sentence called aids. >> i am one with the lonely gay man sheltering a flickering candle from the cold wind of his family's rejection. >> reporter: a mother of two and daughter of a wealthy republican politician, working in the ford white house in 1974, this was not the typical face of aids. but when mary fisher was asked to break her silence, she stood up strongly. what was your main message? what did you want to get across? >> i didn't want my children to feel the shame. so speaking out, for me, was a lot about them. i knew there was tremendous stigma against the gay community. and my message was if it can happen to me, it can happen to you.

and we need to be compassionate. >> reporter: after learning she contracted the virus from her ex-husband, who later died from the disease, she found a new mission in life. mary wrote books and gave speeches. at the same time she prepared for death. and for her young children's future when she would be gone. >> i was organizing how it would be for them. who would be taking care of them. how would they be living. because i don't think anyone can love their children as much as a mother can. i wanted them to know how i felt. each night i rehearsed for the day when i must give you over. that is why, as i reach for the day's last kiss and hug, you always hear me say the same four words. sleep with the angels. >> reporter: but with the help of great medical advances, it turns out that memboir was not her last book. >> i can't help but think about the title, "the messenger." in some ways, is that what you see yourself as, as a messenger?

>> i think, yes, in some respects, that we can all be messengers, that we all have the opportunity to make a difference in other people's lives. and when i first gave my speech in '92, i said that i didn't want my children to think of me as a victim, but i wanted them to think of me as a messenger. >> a message that her sons, 20 years later, have never forgotten. >> she taught me that integrity is everything, that you need to stand up for what you believe in and that no voice is too small, i think, is the biggest thing. >> reporter: yet just as she was learning to live, she faced another unexpected blow last year. breast cancer. >> being diagnosed with cancer is so different than being diagnosed with hiv. people come out of the woodwork. they want to tell you their story. they want to help you. they want to give you advice. when i was diagnosed with hiv, it is so the opposite. >> reporter: so this is your happy place? >> this is my studio, place that i love. >> reporter: her cancer is now in remission and her life in

sedona, arizona, is filled with art, advocacy and helping people live with hiv in africa. and a very special dance she never dreamed she would live to experience. >> it was the most amazing moment, i think, of my life, to watch my son get married and to be alive to see this. i was just -- yeah. i was overwhelmed with joy. >> fisher really defied all odds and now is one of the millions of americans living with aids. but she did say that 20 years after her famous speech, sadly, the stigma still exists and it's what she works for every day. >> absolutely. >> to make sure that people can live without that stigma. >> she has a powerful voice and so many people are listening. it's a great piece, jenna. thank you. her new book is called "messenger." we're back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc. ♪

i have a 13-year-old. >> do you know your child's age? >> i'm allowed to get names wrong, dates wrong. she has personally asked me. >> how did she ask you? >> literally asked me, when can i date? i think we're pushing kids -- of course, the question is what is dating, but i think we're pushing especially our girls too quickly out of girlhood. i know her. she's a middle schooler. she's not ready to date. >> you flat out said no? >> i've seen -- >> you have to be careful. >> you know she's not ready. in our family we have just a number. and the number is 16. and the reason we -- we want them to date in high school, if they're going to do that, just so they can explore the emotional things that happen when you date. >> is that your professional number or as a doctor or as a mom? >> each parent has to make their own decision. >> you ultimately have to decide what dating is. >> versus holding hands or -- >> no, no, dating at 14 is not the same at 19. at 14, they can't drive.

they're sort of hostage to the place where you are. your home. which means you can also supervise and should. >> okay. >> i have a number in my household. >> what? >> 30. i feel i'm safe who have other women around who have been through it. >> what are you really worried about with the dating? it's not the location, whether they're driving. it's whether it might turn into -- >> you want to prepare them for what can come up in dating. at 13, even if you give them -- you think you're giving them the skills, can they really execute those skills? i think 16, you can talk a little more frankly and they can handle a difficult situation. >> you have to lay out some parameters. is your 13-year-old daughter going to be comfortable with a 17-year-old boy? >> you just opened up a whole other -- >> that's the point. you have to label things out ahead of time. >> would you allow your kid to quit a sport or activity? >> this is interesting.

i had the pleasure of interviewing michelle obama last summer. she was talking about this and it really stayed with me. she said malia wanted to quit tennis, but she was just getting good at it so she didn't want to let her quit until she was good enough at this about made that decision. now she loves it, trying out for the high school team. my girls are still young, but i think you have to watch your kids but there are times when you might want to keep pushing them a little bit so they can make that decision later on. >> i want to transition because this is in the news. expose your child to violent video games. when is it okay? >> a lot of research has been done in pediatrics. it actually leads to aggressive behaviors and aggressive thoughts and we don't want our children walking around with a lot of aggression inside them. the video game industry has a ratings system and parents should pay attention to that. the video games look very realistic. children may not realize that what they're playing isn't really real. there's that weird thing when you're very young. we recommend to the american

what's wrong with mommy? but when your kids are older, there's no problem with showing them that, you know what? i hurt a little bit. i'm going to be okay. but this is how i'm feeling. you don't want them to have a weird thing about emotions. >> exactly. also you want kids to know that you can cry in good things and bad. i was sick in december it and couldn't travel with my family to israel. i'm saying good by ining good- i'm crying and my 6 is it-year-old is saying why are you crying? i said i'm sad i'm not with you but i'm so excited for you. >> i think it depends. if it's a big marital spat, that's scary for a kid. you can draw them into conversations that they're not ready for. i remember walking into a bathroom and my expensive night cream was being smeared all over. i burst into tears and she said why are you crying? i just said, mom my's tired. >> and you just wasted $300 of that cream.

>> i'm with parents in very heavy moments. it is very frightening when parents cry at the moment you deliver very serious news because then the child goes, whoa, this must be really, really bad. parents, what usually happens in my practice, parents take a private moment and they cry without the child there. and we can remove the child, separate them. because then the children get very frightened when that happens. >> last up on our list, ladies, when is it okay to share intimate details of your relationship? ie, marriage with your child. >> do you want the right answer or -- the right answer is never. intimate details? i don't think you mean that kind of intimate, but problems you're having. >> is it ever appropriate to talk about? >> no. >> no. >> i don't think so. >> i'm an adult child and sometimes my mom has overshared. and i don't want to -- you know, we want to be our parents' child not their marriage counselor. >> right. >> maybe the kids don't want to

this morning in "today's" kitchen, we're excited about this one. shepherd's pie for dinner. want to easily make a hearty meal, this is probably the perfect choice. charlie palmer is chef and owner of the charlie palmer restaurant. nice to see you. >> great to be here. >> i can't aye love this dish. >> it's like a winter classic. >> exactly. some people do lamb but you do beef. >> shepherd's pie, obviously, la lamb, shepherd in the field. it was originally called cottage pie. we're going to do it with beef today. it's very versatile. today we'll use a little beef chuck to start with here. we're searing it in a pan, almost making like a stew. throw those in there. we'll get it started. get all those veggies in there. we'll cook that down just like a stew. onions, carrots, what else? >> celery, little bit of garlic, red wine in there. >> we say a little. >> yeah, but throw it all in.

>> that's what i thought. >> how long does this part of the process last? >> about an hour and a half to cook down. cover it, throw it in the oven. it's simple once you've grouned your beef. >> smells very good. >> you have your braised beef, all your vegetables are cooked down. you kind of tear that apart. nice, tender beef like that. >> falls off. now you're okay with using frozen corn and peas? >> there's not a lot of great stuff out there this time of year, root vegetables, stuff like this. but for a little color and ode to springtime, peas and corn. we have broken up our meat and have it in a pan like this. a roast that's leftover, chicken. it could be any kind of meat. >> that's sort of half the deal? >> right. then you take your mashed potatoes, yukon gold, incorporated butter and egg yolks in there. we're going to take that, spoon

started. that's what we're doing. >> the positive thinking thing is so important. i think a lot of people -- once they fall off the rails a little bit, they start the downward spiral, but you say -- >> the condemnation thing. >> it's a big -- i talk to a lot of people, and i have deputy with it too myself where you go down that wrong road and you say i'm not worth it to even keep trying. that's kind of what i preach that you do have to keep get back on that horse. >> can we ask you, ben, what trirged it for you? was it the life event? was it just the boredom? what happened? >> the excitement wears off. i thinknd. you start a new job, you start a new school year. you get excited at first. >> marriage. not mine, of course, but i hear that an awful lot. >> i'm actually getting married in may. >> congratulations. >> good for you. >> pretty excited about that. >> a lot of times people say things, say they're going to do something and work out, they're going to diet, but you talk about actions, and i think that that's a problem a lot of us have. we have great intentions, but we
