new information on this man who police say escaped from a locked hospital ward. news4 tony tul has. following the story all morning and says there was a big breakthrough in the last hour. ♪ practice makes perfect. the preparations taking place today for the inauguration. and good morning, everyone, welcome to "news4 midday." i'm barbara harrison. on i'm keith russell, it's friday, january 11th, 2013. breaking news, the man police consider dangerous who escaped wednesday night from a maryland hospital has just been

found. they found and arrested 27-year-old clayton mulenhoff a short time ago. we're live in tacoma park to tell us how it happened. >> reporter: we were with tacoma park police when they got the phone call from rockville police that they had located clayton malenhall. this is the man police here in tacoma park and surrounding jurisdictions have been looking for the last day and a half. wednesday night around 9:00 p.m. he escaped from the washington adventist hospital. he was on a 51-50 hold, a suds watch or a self-harm prevention watch. he was in the hospital on an involuntary status to make sure he didn't harm himself. cause of that, tacoma park elementary school was open lockdown status as were some other schools in the area be keith, as you mepgsed a short time ago, the rockville police department called the tacoma park police department knowing clayton checked himself in voluntarily to a facility in

rockville and they had him in custody. detectives are on their way over there to pick him up. he posed somewhat of a danger to the public but police say no one was hurt. >> all right, tony, with the big news, thanks. one of the heads of the national institutes of health says we're in the middle of a flu epidemic. 41 states including maryland and virginia have reported widespread flu activity. many doctors offices, pharmacies and clinics say they are running out of flu shots. doctors at the children's national medical center say there aren't shots still available throughout the area and it may take a little work to find them. >> we're hearing that the vaccine is out there and it might take a little bit of searching particularly for infants but we're encouraging families to do what they can to get it for their children. >> new numbers from the cdc released new numbers. just a mine ago, actually, saying the flu continues to spread but is weakening. and turning to the weather,

grey skies out there but it's warming up. if you've been outside you'll feel it. storm four meteorologist tom kierein says don't be squared of the clouds. it's warm weather you've been talking about is coming. it is for the weekend but not yet. it still chilly and we have these clouds that have been thickening and lowering over the last couple of hours and they have been producing some scattered light sprinkles around the metro area and parts of virginia. that's all the you're moving color that. that's all rain that is from ohio into the mountains and then east of there, across virginia, maryland, the district of columbia and close up few of storm team 4 radar and farther to the north, into northern adirondel county and eastern howard county getting some sprinkles and getting a few sprinkles in the shenandoah valley and western maryland and more somewhat moderate rain south of fredericksburg and that's going to move to southern maryland.

right now, charles county is getting a few sprinkles as well. temperatures are chilly all throughout the areas in light blue and it's in the mid 40s around the metro area and probably will warm up about another five degrees or so by later this afternoon but look at the mild air pushing to west virginia and ohio valley near 60 degrees. as the mild air comes in after the rain comes in overnight, that is probably going to create some dense fog. that will be coming in later tonight. we'll talk about that and the big warm joup for the weekend and a look into next week in a few minutes. >> tom, thanks. let's check your mid day traffic with mike cremedas in for danella seabrook. how we look something. >> not too bad on the beltway but a few fender-benders to worry about. traffic is getting by to the right. some activity northbound add 395 at 14th street bridge. live to camera and you can see traffic is getting by and causing a delay at the scene and on 395 itself, a 12-minute ride from the beltway to the scene and 55 miles an hour. back to you in the studio. >> thanks, mike.

right now, president obama is meeting with afghanistan president hamid karzai at the white house and they are discussing several topics include what can the role of the u.s. will be in the country of afghanistan. what afghanistan will be when the war ends next year. this is the first time the two leaders have met face-to-face since president obama was re-elected. a news conference is scheduled for 1:15 this afternoon. you can watch it live right here on news4. we'll also stream it live on nbcwashington.com. and the pentagon is bracing for another budget battle on capitol hill taking steps to prepare to deal with billions of dollars in cuts. defense secretary leon panetta is asking his department to brace for those cuts if congress fails to reach an agreement on a final spending plan. the defense department will start freezing civilian hiring and it plans to delay awarding some contracts. and hold off on some maintenance as well. the pentagon is facing nearly a half trillion in cuts over a decade.

>> and inauguration day is now just over a week away. this morning, a big change in plans. the pastor who was supposed to give the ben diction at the swearing in will no longer do so because of anti-gay comments he made 15 years ago. the reverend removed himself from the service after getting criticized for a sermon where he preached that therapy could turn gay people straight. the inauguration committee said it did not know about the sermon at the time of his selection. meantime things are taking shape for the big day. it's estimated 40,000 people will pack two inaugural balls the night of the inauguration. the inauguration collectibles will soob be available and the official inauguration store opens today at noon at f and 11th streets northwest. and parade marchers will hold a practice parade this sunday through the streets of washington. today the u.s. air force band is getting ready for the big parade. news4 megan mcgrath got on inside look at the preps. >> reporter: the inauguration is just a little more than a week away. and all kinds of preparations are under way. you can see behind me, the u.s.

air force band held their formal dress rehearsal this morning. they'll be performing during the parade. they sounded absolutely fantastic and they say they are ready. ♪ they are train professionals who regularly play before dig terri okita dignitaries. but being part of the inaugural parade is something special. >> i wanted to be ap conductor and here i am, i'm 29 year old old and i'm turning 30 but i never thought i would do this on this kind of scale. >> this is peter's first inaugural performance. and it's also the first time for colonel bill knight. >> i took an oath to the constitution and what better way to re-enforce that oath than to get us to participate in the presidential inauguration. >> the u.s. air force band and honor guard held a dress rehearsal in a hangar at giant base andrews this morning. from the look of it, they're

ready for the big day. everything has been meticulously planned and rehearsed. there's just one unknown out there. the weather. we may be experiencing spring-like temperatures this week, but four years ago, the bands marched in below-freezing temperatures. >> colder it gets the harder it is to play the instrument in tune. harder to play at all, for that matter so we hope it did you want get to that point. we want to, at least, moderately warm and sunny. >> be well prepared. we have over garments and ear muffs and gloves and things and we'll be find. we're an all-weather air force and we'll be an all-weather air force on inauguration. >> and for some, there's another challenge. >> one of the hardest things is we're not supposed to smile. it's part of military bearing and i got to tell you the more i do this the harder it is to retain that and keep it within but inside i'm just going to be glowing. >> it's overwhelming. the thousands and thousands of people and sometimes chachbting

"usa, usa" the patriotism is huge and to help spur that on is a great feeling. it makes you stand taller and march prouder. >> and, the parade will go along constitution avenue to pennsylvania there in front of the white house. the u.s. air force band is towards the end of the parade. they're going to perform for the president around 5:00. from andrews joint base, megan mcgrath news4. and we have some breaking news for you. change coming to the stands at fedex field. it could be a sad day for some redskins fans. one of the team's biggest traditions is no more. the famous redskins hoggettes are breaking up. we just talked with head hog yooet michael tolbert and he confirms that they are disbanding. he says that it is just a different era now. once again, you won't be seeing hoggettes at redskins' games anymore. >> man, we just had mikey t on the show and i gave him a chest bump and everything.

show, matt lauer asked the vice president why they aren't closer to a compromise where the white house. >> we have a profound disagreement with this administration, first of all, on what would make a difference. we don't think that a bannen so-called assault weapons which hadn't worked in the past will work this time. we think many of those proposals are basically, feel-good proposals and what we really need to do is get to the question of why this is happening and what can be done about it. so, i don't think there's any lack of concern about dealing with the problem. i think there's a very different view as to what the problem is and how to solve it. >> vice president biden says he will present hid recommendations to president obama on tuesday. today, speak of of the house, john boehner, invited president obama to deliver the state of the union on february 12th. now, on to that story about the wales we told you about. some good news, the whales were trapped underneath ice in canada and they're out of harm's way at least for now, the ice

has shifted and the waters have opened up. scientists say shifting winds may have pushed the ice out of the way. the whales aren't out of the woods yet. the ice couldn'ts to so they could get trapped elsewhere. >> could that mean a warmup in that area? tom is getting on me for saying it's feeling warmer here already. it's just a suggestion. but i'm jumping the gun, not until tomorrow? snow lovers and snow haters are crying. both of them. and some of them are crying tears of. . some of them are crying hot tears of despair. we haven't really had any snow to speak of so far this winter and it doesn't look like much on the way either. but it is snowing hard in eastern canada and they're hit with a major blizzard in st. john's new finland and we've had a beautiful sunrise this case you missed it this is what it looked like. this was the dawn sky over the potomac river from our news4 hd city camera.

off north and east to southern maryland and the northern neck over the next half hour or so. farther north and west, a few sprinkles in northern shenandoah valley and temperatures are in the mid 40s. we're in the low to mid 40s in montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's county and much more mild care coming in to the mountains as we have this big storm system bringing in milder air into the midwest and that will continue to sweep off to the east and come our way overnight. when it comes in it will likely trigger quite a bit of fog. as we go forward with the feature weather a lot of heavier rains passing to our north but not much, probably less than a quarter of inch of rain around the metro area. a lot of cloudiness tonight and patchy, dense fog, saturday morning around 11:00 a.m. still, fog around and during the afternoon. maybe some thin spots in the cloud cover and still, mild weather moving in. and then as we get to sunday, there's going to be another weather system getting close in the mountains but ahead of that, lots of cloudiness and mild still. rain moves in on monday. for this friday afternoon, expect when you're coming back

from work or school or back home later in the day, we'll have temperatures near 50 with rain likely moving through. and overnight tonight, that fog coming in after the rain ends early evening down to the mid 40s by midnight and then by dawn tomorrow, maybe some lingering fog and then over the weekend, we'll have that soaring temperature and then it plummeted by the end of next week. it will be feeling like january again. here are the detauls. we'll have the temperatures 60s tomorrow near 70 on sunday. and then, back down to the 40s, generally, on tuesday, wednesday, thursday and after some early-week rain. that's the way it looks. >> thanks, tom. and we're going to check on your mid day traffic. >> mike cremedas what's the latest? >> keith looking good on the beltway with no serious problems on the inner or outer loop and good news on northbound 39 on the 14th street bridge. there were doing sign work and it's out of the way. here we are at duke street. no serious backups. further north at the bridge, throws delays are cleared up and it's 13-minute ride on

a man is in custody two days after escaping from a hospital ward in tacoma park. the 27-year-old turned himself into police this morning many rockville and he escaped wednesday from washington adventist hospital and police were on heightened alert because he's considered dangerous.

the faa is look closely at boeing's newest and most hi-tech jetliners and they are reviewing key systems on the 787 known as the dreamliner. the plane's electrical system the phone focus. m melissa mollet has more with the investigation. >> two more problems were reported today bringing the total number of incidents to five this week alone. a review like this one is unusual and was initiated after problem with the plane's electrical panel. that inclouds a better fire on monday on a parked dream liner and a problem with the flight's electrical panel the month before and other incidents that stretch back about two years. now, as part of the review the faa will look at the electrical system design, boeing supplier and manufacturing but boeing insists issues like these are fairly common for new planes. >> a lot of these issues are typical issues that come across on every airplane that's in service today. >> i believe this plane is safe

and i would have absolutely no reservation of boarding one of these planes and taking a flight. these planes are safe. >> now, there are 50 dream liners worldwide built to be the plane of the future, so to speak. they're made of carbon fiber, lighter and yourself electronics instead of hydraulics and are more fuel efficient. the faa will keep the planes in service while the review is under way and they don't know how long that might be. back to you. thanks, melissa. the arraignment that was set for today for the man accused of killing 12 people inside a colorado movie theater has been postponed. the judge yesterday ruled that james holmes can stand trial for last summer's mass shootings, saying the prosecutors have established probably cause open more than 160 felony counts. it comes after four days of graphic testimony about the shooting. holmes' attorneys asked for today's arraignment to be delayed and the judge granted a continuance. the arraignment is now set for march 12th.

today is the first anniversary of one of the worst cruise ship disasters in recent memory. the costa concordia capsized a year ago today after hitting rocks near an island in tuscany. 32 people died. the captain that abandoned the ship is now accused of manslaughter and other charges. as for the costa concordia itself it remains exactly where it has been for the last year, on its side on a rocky shelf. let's check in again with tom kierein for the latest on our forecast. he's outside on the storm team 4 weather deck. cloudy skies and there's been just a few light sprinkles falling around the metro area off and on since about 10:00 this morning. but right now, no rain here northwest. and don't have any in the district either. just some low, grey clouds, live view from the news4 camera. just past 11:30, the moving color is all light rain sprinkles coming through the areas you see in the darker green and the yellows near fredericksburg and may be coming

down a little bit harder and not heavy rain at all, advancing to the north and east. we'll have a few sprinkles off and on into the afternoon and maybe a passing shower from time to time. and chilly. we're still in the 40s. most of virginia and maryland, but milder air pushing into the mountains. 45 at reagan national and the high may make it up to around 50. nearby suburbs low to mid 40s with, maybe, a sprinkle or two here for the next couple of hours and then a passing shower possible this afternoon and ending early this evening and then after that could get some patchy, dense fog late tonight and early saturday how long and sun may break out saturday afternoon in the mid 60s and high near 70 on sunday. a lot of clouds and could get more rain starting off the first part of next week and then turning colder midweek and toward the end of next week. keith? >> tom, i'm looking at sunday and i'm like, can't wait! >> expect some delays on metro this weekend. here's track work on three lines, buses will replace trains on the blue line between pent

agency is ordering the maker of ambien to cut the recommended dosage in hatch for women because their bodies retain the drug longer than men. >> i remember getting on the highway and then i have no memory. >> i have seen everything from them nodding off while their they're talking to me to them talking like in tongue. >> the maker of ambien says the sleep aid should not be taken at all unless the person taking it gets the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep. nearly a year after receiving the most extensive full-face transplant ever completed, 37-year-old richard lee norris is regaining the ability to speak and show expression. the university of maryland has recently released detailtion on hus amazing progress and doctor steven hopping joins us now to explain why this is, perhaps, the biggest medical story of 2012 and welcome. we talked about this before. in fact we talked about several of these full-face transplants but this is amazing, isn't it? >> this is the seventh and the

most extensive transplant right in our backyard. university of maryland, shock trauma unit and it's been a remarkable success, barbara. >> would you have ever expected it to be this successful? he had the everything, the tongue, cheeks, everything, transplant snootd i remember when the first entrance plant that was done and i think it was you that interviewed me. i thought, this is going to be a fad. this is for real and this has a future and it's a fantastic result. yes, with therapy he's speaking, eating, talking, smiling, he looks normal. you can pass him in the street and not stare at him. >> and here he is before and this is after the injury. it was a gun accidentsal gun injury that shot off his tongue, jaws, nose, face. this is replaced by a donor so it doesn't look like the way he looked before. he looks a little bit like himself and a little bit like the donor. >> what call does this? they have to reconnect all kinds of things, right?

nerves and muscles and -- >> the major thing is the arteries so it has a blood supply and it lives and then they have to connect the nerves, major cranial nerves that the tongue and face and these take a long time to recover. his -- the speed of his recovery is why is astounding, really. but it may take some further surgeries. richard is doing incredible and it bodes well for the future of the surgery. >> how much are the nerves and the face connected to the brain. how much do you have to use your brain to smile. >> these were peripheral nerves. they were able to connect his nerves to peripheral nerves. really nothing to do with his brain. his bin wasn't injured. it's a peripheral thing. >> he's going through an awful lot of occupational and speech therapy at this time, right? >> it takes a lot of energy and courage to recover from this extort of surgery. >> what are the implications of this? where are we going next? >> u think at love oz these are

being funded by the military and these severe facial injuries and i think military people will be able to benefit from this extreme burn patients that we've not been able to reconstruct with traditional surgeries will be beneficial from this accident -- gunshot injuries to the face. there's a whole host of people who, i think, have a great future having into future before with this surgery. >> here's the kind of frightening thought. what about someone that decides i want to get a full-face transplant because i don't like my face or because my face is getting older so i want somebody to do naet their face to me. >> right. well, we start to run into a few moral issues where this surgery, that's true. >> that happens a lot when you're -- >> there's a thin line between science and science fiction. >> you can probably imagine there would be some people like that. >> absolutely. >> and then the whole idea of growing a clone to be able to replace your face. >> the possibilities are endless, barbara, you're right.

borestin. stocks are hovering around the flat line. the dow has been bouncing in and out of positive territory and the nasdaq and s&p are both just fracktionly low lower right now and this comes after the s&p 500 hit a five-year closing high yesterday afternoon. and economic news, import prices slipped a tenth of a percent last month and in november, the trade deficit unexpectedly increased by 16%. looking at some of the stocks making headlines today. best buy shares are soars as much as 12% earlier. this after -- and they're leading the s&p 500. this after the company posted flat same-store sales during the holiday season. the positive is because investors expected same-store sales to decline. now all eyes are on boeing. the faa will launch a safety review of its 787 dream liner after a series of issues in the past week. including a cracked cockpit
