customers without power. dominion reports about 2500 customers in the dark. meteorologist tom kierein is here. tom, what can we expect now that the snow missed us? >> it tracked 50 miles south and drew in drier air. the snow fell across central, southern virginia and around ocean city. it's ended there now. we're getting a few scattered flurries north and west of washington. right now in northern prince george's, southeastern howard county getting a few flurries as it carroll and frederick and parts of washington county. they're tending to dry out. these are the snow totals from last evening and yesterday afternoon. a dusting to an inch to near charlottesville. the amounts ramped up farther south and east. 2 to 6 inches there. the heaviest amounts were southwest of virginia into western north carolina. 8 to 14 inches of heavy wet snow there. right now, temperatures are above freezing much of the region we're in the mid 30s. winds are gusting around 20 miles an hour. hour by hour through the day

made no later than the end of the year. mgm resorts will likely submit a proposal to build the casino. penn national has not decided whether it will go after the license. it is going to be a long couple of days for crews getting the national mall ready for monday's inauguration. they're about to start laying a plastic cover on the mall's newly planted grass. that plastic will protect the grass from the hundreds of thousands of people who will watch president obama take the oath of office. the park service spent $16 million to replace mall's battered grass. crews will spend today and tomorrow laying down that plastic covering. driving downtown will nearly be impossible on monday. most streets near the parade route and the mall will be closed for much of the day. that includes independence avenue from 14th street to second street in northeast and constitution avenue from 17th street northwest to second street northeast. make nbc4 your home for

i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. this is just in. the militants in algeria holding hostages inside that natural gas plant are promising to carry out more operations, this is according to a local news agency. a short time ago a u.s. plane

landed at an airport near there to evacuate some americans. many hostages are still unaccounted for. kidnappers stormed the facility taking dozens of hostages. some have escaped since then, others still unaccounted for as i mentioned. at least six were killed when algerian troops attempted to rescue the hostages on tuesday. the foreign secretary said this remains and fluid investigation. we'll keep an eye on it for you at the live desk. melissa mollet, news 4. 5:16 now. a developing story out of seattle, washington. the fbi is investigating after receiving a call that a man aboard a flight from hawaii to seattle was a potential hijacker. f-15 jets from the oregon air national guard scrambled to escort that flight to seattle tacoma international. as soon as it landed, officers came aboard and took the unidentified man off the plane. people on board say that despite everything, the flight was uneventful. >> the only thing i saw was when the police came on the arron

airplane and asked the lady to get up and took him outside. officers questioned the man for hours but say they do not expect to arrest him. it's not clear if the call was legit ma or a hoax. federal investigators in japan to look at one of the boeing 787s forced to make an emergency landing. investigators from the faa and ntsb arrived in western japan early this morning. nearly all of the 787s in use around the world have been grounded because of safety concerns. there have been several incidents including a battery fire, a wiring problem and an issue with a brake computer. boeing is proposing safety measures to address the problems. >> the body of a poisoned lottery winner will be exhumed. urooj khan died in july as he was about to collect $400,000 in lottery winnings. his death was initially ruled natural causes. further toxicology exams,

though, led to the conclusion that the former dry cleaning businessman was poisoned. cyanide was found in his system. police are hoping an autopsy today will produce more evidence. investigators looking into one of hollywood's infamous deaths, the natalie wood drowning. police have not been able to get ahold of robert wagner, woods' husband at the time of her death. police interviewed 100 people since reopening the investigation in 2011 but wagner has refused to speak. his lawyers say he's cooperated for 30 years and has nothing more to say. woods' death was recently changed from an accidental drowning to drowning caused by undetermined factors. the colorado movie theater where a gunman opened fire last summer is open again. victims and their families attended a private ceremony last night at the denver area theater where 12 people were killed and dozens of others wounded. police and other first responders were also there last night. colorado's governor called last night's ceremony one step on the path to healing. several victims' families, though, boycotted the event.

they called it akal us p.r. ploy by the theater's owners. are the president's kids more important than yours? why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools? >> new jersey governor chris christie is blasting the nra foor this controversial ad. the republican governor says it's reprehensible to bring president obama's daughters into the gun control debate. christy says all public figure's children should be left out of political attacks. a controversial proposal to put guns in virginia schools now sits with school safety task forces. a committee deferred the bill to that panel. the legislation would authorize one person in every school to carry a concealed weapon. the school safety task force expected to make recommendations before the general assembly adjourns next month. one delegate says the state should move quickly to approve the bill. >> the more we delay, every day

we expose children to this circumstance of being slaughtered -- >> those against the bill say firearms in schools, especially with small children could set up a dangerous scenario. >> one lawmaker's dramatic prop sparked a new debate over guns in richmond. richmond area democrat joe morrissey brought an ak-47 into the house chamber. a picture of him with the weapon is making the round on twitter this morning. morrissey was trying to urge other lawmakers to vote in favor of banning sales of assault rifles. a panel ended up voting that down. other lawmakers scolded morrissey for improperly handling the weapon. he assured his colleagues the weapon was not loaded. maryland's governor is slated to propose a bill today to make it easier to cast a vote in maryland. according to the washington post, governor martin o'malley will push for a bill to expand early voting and to allow maryland residents to register to vote and vote on the same

secretary of state. lawmakers in maryland have come up with a compromise in legislation over who is responsible for injuries from dangerous dogs. it would impress the impact of last year's court ruling that pit bulls are inherently dangerous. that decision made pet owners and landlords liable for dog attacks. new law clarifies responsibility and would apply to all breed, not just pit bulls and landlords would only be liable if they know or should have known that a dangerous dog was being housed on their property. the original author of the dear abby advice column has died. funeral services were held yesterday for abigail vanburen. she died wednesday after a long battle with alzheimer's disease. she was 94. giving good advice runs in the family. for decades her column competed with the advice of ann landers, written by her twin sister esther. esther died in 2002ment they were on good terms. the dear abby column has been

washington yesterday when she noticed a man across the street. she says he was staring at her and started following. he asked for her name, started touching himself and forcefully started touching her. that's when she decided to tight back. >> like i started screaming and kicking. he just like ran because he knew like i wasn't going to let him do anything. i felt kind of helpless. >> the girl was not seriously hurt. if you know anything about the attack, police want o hear from you. guilty, that is the verdict a jury handed down for a former police officer convicted of murder. 40-year-old richmond phillips was found guilty of killing his mistress and leaving their baby to die in a hot car. it took the jury 90 minutes to reach a verdict. 20-year-old wynetta wright and 11-month-old jaylin died. he lured wright and her baby to the hillcrest heights rec center and killed her to avoid a

paternity and child support hearings. wright's family is overjoyed by the verdict. >> i am so happy that he was found guilty on every count. because he's i liar and a killer. >> god is good. i'm so glad he's found -- i'm so glad they found him guilty. >> phillips now faces life in prison. opening statements expected today in the misconduct trial of anne arundel county executive leopold. he's accused of using police detail for personal and political purposes, including ferrying him to sexual encounters with a mistress in parking lots. he maintains his innocence. he faces up to five years in prison if convicted. the fbi is hoping their move to the suburbs won't cost them a dime. according to the washington examiner, the agency wants to swap the j. edgar hoover building with a property in northern virginia. they say it's prime retail space

on pennsylvania avenue. prince george's and fairfax counties are frontrunners to house the new headquarters. we're learning more this morning about the plan to build a new casino in prince yornl's county. the baltimore sun reporting the maryland commission in charge of awarding a casino license will call for proposals the end of the month. the proposals could be due in may and the commission could make a decision no later than the end of the year. mgm resorts will likely submit a proposal to build a casino near national harbor. penn national which owns road cross raceway has not decided whether it will go after the license. let's take a live picture in north carolina. this is canton, north carolina, which is about two years west of charlotte. there's snow on president ground. snow-covered cars. so this storm came very close to hitting us. and we kind of missed out on the snow. i'm not disappointed. but i know there are snow lovers, including my children who are waiting for the snow to come. >> including tom kierein and most meteorologists like to have variety in their winter, right? >> yeah.

you know the storms are maddening to try to predict. they're one. most difficult things in all of the science to predict, winter storm. no matter all the sophisticated computer models. the best educated meteorologist, still mother nature has a mind much her own. it tracked about 50 miles farther south than what we were thinking. capitol hill under a clearing sky. 38 at reagan national. a northwest wind at 12 to 15 miles an hour. occasionally gusting to 20 miles per hour. yeah, it feels like winter. there's the storm. it rolled across western north carolina all across southern virginia and central virginia. look at the snow amounts. anywhere from a dusting to an inch in far southern maryland and down toward the northern neck of virginia. and then farther west of there, couple of inches south of charlottesville. but up to 6 inches near richmond and south of there. southeast of there and up to as much as 14 inches in parts of northern -- western part of north carolina and southwestern virginia as much as 8 to 10 to 12 inches fell there.

it was a close call. just tracked about 50 miles farther south. since then, we've had our sky clear out. a few scattered flurries rolled through from the north and west. we're clearing and we're cold now. temperatures all around the rei don't know are just in the 30s. we're going to stay in the 30s for the rest of the day. cold air way to the south. hour by hour throughout the day, not much of a warmup. at 9:00, maybe mid-30s. by noontime, holding steady between then and 3:00, it may be hovering in the upper 30s. the winds gusting to 30 miles an hour. lots of sun. by 6:00 p.m., back down to the low 30s. then the 20s by dawn on saturday. sunny tomorrow into the mid 40s. not as much wind. a bit of a blustery wind on sunday. sunny in the morning. afternoon highs upper 40s. increasing clouds. looks like late sunday afternoon into sunday night, inauguration day looking mostly cloudy. might get a passing snow shower or flurries. but cold. only in the 30s.

parents are fired up about a plan to move some students to another high school. they're building another oxon hill high school. 500 students could end up at nearby potomac high school next year. the financial crisis and high enrollment at oxon hill forced them to consider moving students. many parents blame poor planning. >> we've got to do a better job of -- to get the pa silts we need. incoming freshman and ninth graders would most likely be transferred to potomac. the school board says it can review other options. a final decision on boundary changes won't happen until february 21st. 5:55 now. this morning, president obama's outgoing money man has a message to the american people. cheer up. cnbc's chashartia brantley has t story and more. >> timothy geithner says americans are too -- he says the

economy is in the final quarter of recovery from the financial crisis. geithner tells the wall street journal the u.s. was well ahead of other countries in balancing debts, income and cutting leverage and the financial system. geithner says the u.s. has more diversity of strength from high tech to energy and the public should find comfort and optimism in that. here's a reason to be optimistic. mortgage rates are falling back toward record lows. freddie mac says the average rate dipped to 3.38% from 3.4% last week. the 30-year average of 3.6% in 2012 was the lowest annual average in 65 years. guys, cheaper mortgages are a major reason the housing market has been bouncing back. many economists believe the recovery was strengthened throughout the year. >> shartia brantley. thank you. now to a house that, it had a mortgage, the monthly payment
