"early today" right now. >> announcer: this is "early today" for friday, january 25th, 2013. good morning. i'm mara schiavocampo. bitterly cold arctic care is gripping parts of the nation this morning for a third straight day. as eye can see single digit temperatures are causing rivers to freeze in the boston area. and in massachusetts, amazing pictures show the thicket rivers fall frozen solid. here in new york, you can see the famous fountain in bryant park is covered in ice. and later on our bill karins will have much more on the deep freeze. that's coming right up. in the after math of the shootings in newtown, connecticut a new bill to propose the bill for assault weapons it be proposed. dianne feinstein names a bill that includes 150 firearms and rifles and pistols and it would

ban am mission clips holding more than ten rounds but would exempt more than 200 hunting weapons. the nra responded to the bill saying they are confident congress will reject it and finestein herself said the bill faces an uphill battle to win approval. the senate has approved moderate changes to its rules on filibuster. the procedural delays used to kill some bills in nomination. senate majority leader harry reid worked out a deal with republicans that will allow bills to be brought up your quickly. and not require senators to stay on the floor talking as some senators wants. manti te'o speaks in his first on-camera interview since the girlfriend hoax story broke. thursday, te'o told katie couric he was not in on the prank. and he admitted to stick stog

the story after the fact. te'o as showed couric a twitter message where the man who allegedly perpetrated that hoax apologized to him. and he addressed questions about his sexuality. >> one of the theory, many theories, manti, making the rounds is somehow you created this whole scenario to cover up your sexual orientation. are you gay? >> no. far from it. far from it. >> all right then. we'll be looking at stories develops later this morning. vice president biden and cabinet settings and members of congress traveled to virginia for a roundtable discussion on reducing gun violence. and there's a new strain of a nasty stomach bug being called the ferrari of viruses. health officials say it's sweeping the globe and taking over the u.s. and caused by the new sydney strain of norovirus and is highly contagious. in washington, hundreds of

thousands of anti-abortion activists are expected on national hall for the march for life. nbc's tracie potts is live. tracie, this marks the supreme court's roe v. wade that legalized abortion. are the protests expected to be larger because of that? >> reporter: they are. the second time this week we've seen that on the national mall. it came because of the anniversary, but because of that, organizers moved this protest to friday so as not to conflict. but today, we do expect to see this pro-life march, this huge march, on the national mall. a lot of things have changed, though, in the last 40 years, especially in the last couple of years. there have been more than 150 new laws by states and local legislatures in just the past two years. 19 different states acting just last year to restrict abortion rights. it's one of the reasons why this

group says it wants to speak up and try to push for the overturning of roe versus wade. but a brand-new nbc poll shows 7 out of 10 want roe versus wade to stay. we will see lawmakers at that event later today. tracie potts in washington. thanks so much for that. well, we have new video of a dramatic swift water rescue that happened in northeast australia today. a 14-year-old is caught by raging waters you can see him clinging to a tree before rescuers are able to pull him to safety. 27 rescues have been reported in the past two days after remnants of the tropical cyclone dumped huge amounts of rain on the region. bill karins. good morning. good morning, widespread snow is going to spread from the great lakes all the way to the east coast. the air mass is plenty cold enough. this is going to be one of those light fluffy snow events, you

know when you get an inch on the ground and you stomp your foot and it blows. that's the kind of snow. still chilly always every. but when is you have a storm coming it chills just about everybody. all of northern ohio, kentucky, west virginia, almost all of north carolina. then we'll deal with icy problems. freezing rain. atlanta north, especially north georgia, mountains are going to get it good. and watch out there, north of memphis, nashville, too, depending on how warm your temperatures get now it's just beginning and you can see how widespread it is. the white is the snow. again, a lot of light snow. heading for chicago during the morning rush hour. could pick up an inch or two of fluffy snow. there's that ice and the pink shading is where we're getting freezing rain over kentucky. again, very light now but more intense throughout the day. how much snow? this is not a blockbuster event. in most cases, no shoveling or plowing will be needed.

for the most part, one or two inches, the higher totals, some of the areas of west virginia, we may get enhancement from richmond to norfolk, to virginia beach. looks like mostly a miss for all of new england, from d.c., to the south, one or two inches later today. again, that's later today. for the daylight hours, chicago all way through the ohio valley. the forecast again, travel concerns, chicago, green bay, milwaukee, the wohl southern half of the country, along the gulf, you're looking great as always. that's a look at the national forecast. now, here's a look at weather outside your window. today in philadelphia, the chance of snow is late today, mostly in the afternoon rush hour to the evening hours i think you'll be able to get to school and work and get home just the same. areas like phoenix, arizona also some weather for you out west. up next, medical scientist as real life "star trek" tracker

about 600 jobs through buyouts. net to netflix, shares jumped 42%. with strong quarterly earnings. after peaking in the $37 range, apple is down 36%. the question everyone is asking, how low will they go. next to new home sales which some estimate to be at 400,000 for december. if that number is accurate, it would be a very good sign for the economy. and i'm sure you've seen the frenzy over subway's one-inch short controversy. sandwich lovers are happy. and some filed class lawsuits. suitcase customers are opened a refund for the portion of the sandwich that they've not been receiving. subway as declined to comment on the lawsuit. a spokesman said the restaurant chain has redoubled the levels to ensure consistency in every sandwich we have.

welcome back to "early today." the big weather story today is this very weak storm that's going to be widespread from the great lakes this morning all the way down to the deep south. we do have the potential for some freezing rain and ice later today from atlanta, to north georgia to many areas of tennessee too. then just areas of light, fluffy snow throughout much of the ohio valley today. including this morning around chicago, late today towards tonight it will move through washington, d.c. and areas of north carolina. that's what we'll be watching. it's a little warmer out there, not quite as cold. also some rainy weather from southern california to arizona.

as we go throughout your weekend, notice we're snow-free, maybe a few flurries around the great lakes. temperatures moderate. notice 17 around minneapolis. the problem is as we get warmer air heading northwards it's going to give way to clouds and rain. freezing rain could be a problem on sunday for iowa and central illinois. keep in minds are any travel plans through the midwest, a little freezing rain but the moderation begins this weekend. >> really sad i'm looking forward to 38 degrees. if you're looking for entertainment, you might want to skip the movies this weekend. there are three new releases and none screened by critics. bill buzz and little market will go amount to a small take at the box office. hansel and gretel witch hunters turned out to be a real movie not just a practical movie. ensuring it will finish in first

intersection of 5th and -- >> good morning eun. the police still here on o the scene collecting evidence, trying to piece together what happened. the search still on for the gunman responsible. the call came in around 4:00 this morning. when police arrived on the scene near the intersection of fifth and nicholson. they found an adult woman suffering frn apparent gunshot wound to the head. she's described as unresponsive. not a lot of information is known at this point. very early in the investigation. this call came in less than an hour ago. certainly an active investigation as you can see from all of the police vehicles on the scene. they are searching for the gunman responsible. no updates in terms of the condition in this. all we know, she is an adult female. anyone with information is asked to call metropolitan police. megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you. >> megan, thank yo
